Machine learning (ML) is an important component for enabling automation in Radio Access Networks (RANs). The work on applying ML for RAN has been under development for many years and is now also drawing attention in 3GPP and Open-RAN standardization fora. A key component of multiple features, also highlighted in the recent 3GPP specification work, is the use of mobility, traffic and radio channel prediction. These types of predictions form the intelligence enablers to leverage the potentials for ML for RAN, both for current and future wireless networks. This paper provides an overview with evaluation results of current applications that utilize such intelligence enablers, we then discuss how those enablers likely will be a cornerstone for emerging 6G use cases such as wireless energy transmission.
Two major factors affecting mobile network performance are mobility and traffic patterns. Simulations and analytical-based performance evaluations rely on models to approximate factors affecting the network. Hence, the understanding of mobility and traffic is imperative to the effective evaluation and efficient design of future mobile networks. Current models target either mobility or traffic, but do not capture their interplay. Many trace-based mobility models have largely used pre-smartphone datasets (e.g., AP-logs), or much coarser granularity (e.g., cell-towers) traces. This raises questio…
In TCEs (Temporary Crowded Events), for example, music festivals, users are faced with problems accessing the Internet. TCEs are limited time events with a high concentration of people moving within the event enclosure while accessing the Internet. Unlike other events where the user locations are constant and known at the start (e.g. stadiums), the traffic generation and the user movement in TCEs is variable and influenced by the dynamics of the event. The movement of users can lead to overloads in APs (Access Point) in case they are fixed. In order to minimize this phenomenon, new techniques …
We present procedures that exploit mobility prediction and prefetching to enhance offloading of traffic from mobile networks to WiFi hotspots, for both delay tolerant and delay sensitive traffic. We evaluate the procedures in terms of the percentage of offloaded traffic, the data transfer delay, and the cache size used for prefetching. The evaluation considers empirical measurements and shows how various parameters influence the performance of the procedures, and their robustness to time and throughput estimation errors.

This collaborative work was completed under and for the utility of ETSU's Vehicular Networking Lab. It can serve as a basis for further development in the field of connected and autonomous vehicle…
The adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in businesses is increasing and thus enterprise IoT (EIoT) is seemingly shifting from hype to reality. However, the actual use of EIoT over significant timescales has not been empirically analyzed. In other words, the reality remains unexplored. Furthermore, despite the variety of EIoT verticals, the use of IoT across vertical industries has not been compared. This paper uses a two-year EIoT dataset from a major Finnish mobile network operator to investigate device use across industries, cellular traffic patterns, and mobility patterns. We …
Mobility and network traffic have been traditionally studied separately. Their interaction is vital for generations of future mobile services and effective caching, but has not been studied in depth with real-world big data. In this paper, we characterize mobility encounters and study the correlation between encounters and web traffic profiles using large-scale datasets (30TB in size) of WiFi and NetFlow traces. The analysis quantifies these correlations for the first time, across spatio-temporal dimensions, for device types grouped into on-the-go Flutes and sit-to-use Cellos. The results cons…

An ad hoc network of vehicles (VANET) consists of vehicles that exchange information via radio in order to improve road safety, traffic management and do better distribution of traffic load in time and space. Along with this it allows Internet access for passengers and users of vehicles. A significant characteristic while studying VANETs is the requirement of having a mobility model that gives aspects of real vehicular traffic. These scenarios play an important role in performance of VANETs. In our paper we have demonstration and description of generating realistic mobility model using various…
Scalability of the network layer mobility management solution is one of the most important requirements for the mobility control plane. Mobility Label Based Network (MLBN) is a new approach to the network layer mobility management problem that relies solely on MPLS to provide both macro- and micro-mobility for IPv4 and IPv6 mobile hosts and routers. This new approach does not rely on the existing IP mobility management protocols such as Mobile IP and is based on the combination of Multi- Protocol BGP (MP-BGP) and MPLS. In the context of the MLBN the scalable control plane should be capable of …
A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a group of mobile nodes that can be set up randomly and formed without the need of any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. In this network the mobile devices are dependent on battery power, it is important to minimize their energy consumption. Also storage capacity and power are severely limited. In situations such as emergency rescue, military actions, and scientific field missions, energy conservation plays an even more important role which is critical to the success of the tasks performed by the network. Therefore, energy conserv…

With the increasing capacity requirements and requirements for quality of experience, mobility prediction has been widely applied to mobile communication and has becoming one of the key enablers that utilizes historical traffic information to predict future locations of traffic users, Since accurate mobility prediction can help enable efficient radio resource management, assist route planning, guide vehicle dispatching, or mitigate traffic congestion. However, mobility prediction is a challenging problem due to the…
Hierarchical Mobility Label Based Network (HMLBN) is a new approach to the network layer mobility management problem that relies on MPLS-aware control plane and MPLS-based forwarding plane to provide IP mobility support for IPv4 and IPv6 mobile hosts and routers while being able to ensure optimal traffic delivery between the communicating devices. The hierarchical system is capable of both macro- and micro-mobility support without the use of Mobile IP and its derivatives thus eliminating the user and network facing performance penalties associated with triangular routing and bi-directional tun…

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are self-organized, distributed communication networks built up from moving vehicles where each node is characterized by variable speed, strict limits of freedom in movement patterns and a variety of traffic dynamics. In the last few years vehicular traffic is attracting a growing attention from both industry and research, due to the importance of the related applications, ranging from traffic control to road safety. However, less attention has been paid to the modeling of realistic user mobility through real empirical data that would allow to develop much mor…
We study a model of wireless networks where users move at speed s, which has the original feature of being defined through a fixed-point equation. Namely, we start from a two-class Processor-Sharing queue to model one representative cell of this network: class 1 users are not impatient (non-moving) and class 2 users are impatient (moving). This model has five parameters, and we study the case where one of these parameters is set as a function of the other four through a fixed-point equation. This fixed-point equation captures the fact that the considered cell is in balance with the rest of the…
Offloading traffic through opportunistic communications has been recently proposed as a way to relieve the current overload of cellular networks. Opportunistic communication can occur when mobile device users are (temporarily) in each other's proximity, such that the devices can establish a local peer-to-peer connection (e.g., via Bluetooth). Since opportunistic communication is based on the spontaneous mobility of the participants, it is inherently unreliable. This poses a serious challenge to the design of any cellular offloading solutions, that must meet the applications' requirements. In t…
Small-cell networks have been proposed to meet the demand of ever growing mobile data traffic. One of the prominent challenges faced by small-cell networks is the lack of sufficient backhaul capacity to connect small-cell base stations (small-BSs) to the core network. We exploit the effective application layer semantics of both spatial and temporal locality to reduce the backhaul traffic. Specifically, small-BSs are equipped with storage facility to cache contents requested by users. As the {\em cache hit ratio} increases, most of the users' requests can be satisfied locally without incurring …
In recent years several wireless communication standards have been developed and more are expected, each with different scope in terms of spatial coverage, radio access capabilities, and mobility support. Heterogeneous networks combine multiple of these radio interfaces both in network infrastructure and in user equipment which requires a new multi-radio framework, enabling mobility and handover management for multiple RATs. The use of heterogeneous networks can capitalize on the overlapping coverage and allow user devices to take advantage of the fact that there are multiple radio interfaces.…

On the other hand, the combination of various wireless access technologies, known as Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) has been introduced to provide continuous connection to mobile devices in any time and location. Cognitive radio networks as a part of NGWNs aroused to overcome spectrum inefficiency and spectrum scarcity issues. We review the research literature investigating systems in which mobile entities can carry data while they move. These entities can be either mobile by nature (e.g., human beings and animals) or mobile by design (e.g., trains, airplanes, and cars). The movements of such entities equipped with storage capabilities create a communication channel which can help overcome the limitations or the lack of conventional data networks. Common limitations include the mismatch between the capacity offered by these networks and the traffic demand or their limited deployment owing to environmental factors. A…
In part I of this paper, a distributed and a centralized architecture for an optimal radio resource allocation aware of the traffic delay-tolerance nature, user subscription type, and application usage variations were developed. In the current article, a transmission overhead analysis of the aforementioned distributed and a centralized architectures is investigated and it is proved that the centralized scheme endures a significantly lower transmission overhead than does the distributed approach. Furthermore, the lower bounds of the transmission overhead for both the centralized and the distrib…

Dramatic mobile data traffic growth has spurred a dense deployment of small cell base stations (SCBSs). Small cells enhance the spectrum efficiency and thus enlarge the capacity of mobile networks. Although SCBSs consume much less power than macro BSs (MBSs) do, the overall power consumption of a large number of SCBSs is phenomenal. As the energy harvesting technology advances, base stations (BSs) can be powered by green energy to alleviate the on-grid power consumption. For mobile networks with high BS density, traffic load balancing is critical in order to exploit the capacity of SCBSs. To f…
Efficient mobility management techniques are critical in providing seamless connectivity and session continuity between a mobile node and the network during its movement. Current mobility management solutions generally require a central entity in the network core, tracking IP address movement and anchoring traffic from source to destination through point-to-point tunnels. Intuitively, this approach suffers from scalability limitations as it creates bottlenecks in the network, due to sub-optimal routing via the anchor point. Meanwhile, alternative anchorless, solutions are not feasible due to t…

Network softwarization triggered a new wave of innovation in modern network design. The next generation of mobile networks embraces this trend. Mobile-edge computing (MEC) is a key part of emerging mobile networks that enables ultra-low latency mission-critical application such as vehicle-to vehicle communication. MEC aims at bringing delay-sensitive applications closer to the radio access network to enable ultra-low latency for users and decrease the back-haul pressure on mobile service providers. However, there are no practical solutions to enable mobility at MEC where connections are no lon…

These figures indicate the rapid rise of industrial cities and the urgent need to move from traditional cities to smart cities. This article provides a survey of different approaches and technologies such as intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that lever…
Understanding and predicting real-time vehicle mobility patterns on highways are essential to address traffic congestion and respond to the emergency. However, almost all existing works (e.g., based on cellphones, onboard devices, or traffic cameras) suffer from high costs, low penetration rates, or only aggregate results. To address these drawbacks, we utilize Electric Toll Collection systems (ETC) as a large-scale sensor network and design a system called VeMo to transparently model and predict vehicle mobility at the individual level with a full penetration rate. Our novelty is how we addre…
The recent adaption of virtualization technologies in the next generation mobile network enables 5G base station to be segregated into a Radio Unit (RU), a Distributed Unit (DU), and a Central Unit (CU) to support Cloud based Radio Access Networks (C-RAN). RU and DU are connected through a fronthaul link. In contrast, CU and DU are connected through a midhaul link. Although virtualization of CU gives benefits of centralization to the operators, there are other issues to be solved such as optimization of midhaul bandwidth and computing resources at edge cloud and central cloud where the DUs and…
Wireless mesh networks have been presented as a robust, scalable and low cost solution to provide connectivity in long distance areas. However, given its nature, routing strategies must support seamless mobility of nodes while enabling operation with a good performance and fast self-recovery from links fault. The routing approaches that meet these requirements are based on protocols usually used in ad-hoc networks (e.g. OLSR and B.A.T.M.A.N.) and, more recently, in the SDN paradigm (e.g. OpenWiMesh), each one of them having its own pros and cons. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the bene…
We investigate sequence machine learning techniques on raw radio signal time-series data. By applying deep recurrent neural networks we learn to discriminate between several application layer traffic types on top of a constant envelope modulation without using an expert demodulation algorithm. We show that complex protocol sequences can be learned and used for both classification and generation tasks using this approach.
Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) is subclass of mobile ad-hoc network which is vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication environment, where nodes involve themselves as servers and/or clients to exchange and share information. VANET have some unique characteristics like high dynamic topology, frequent disconnections, restricted topology etc, so it need special class of routing protocol. To simulate the VANET scenarios we require two types of simulators, traffic simulator for generating traffic and network simulator. In this project I created a sample scenario of VANET for A…

Blind spots are one of the causes of road accidents in the hilly and flat areas. These blind spot accidents can be decreased by establishing an Internet of Vehicles (IoV) using Vehicle-2-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-2-Infrastrtructure (V2I) communication systems. But the problem with these IoV is that most of them are using DSRC or single Radio Access Technology (RAT) as a wireless technology, which has been proven to be failed for efficient communication between vehicles. Recently, Cognitive Radio (CR) based IoV have to be proven best wireless communication systems for vehicular networks. Howeve…

Cognitive radio technology would enable a set of secondary users (SU) to opportunistically use the spectrum licensed to a primary user (PU). In this paper, we propose and analyze the performance of virtual reservation in collaborative cognitive networks. Virtual reservation is a novel link maintenance strategy that aims to maximize the throughput of t…
Network slicing is a critical driver for guaranteeing the diverse service level agreements (SLA) in 5G and future networks. Inter-slice radio resource allocation (IS-RRA) in the radio access network (RAN) is very important. However, user mobility brings new challenges for optimal IS-RRA. This paper first proposes a soft and hard hybrid slicing framework where a common slice is introduced to realize a trade-off between isolation and spectrum efficiency (SE). To address the challenges posed by user mobility, we propose a two-step deep learning-based algorithm: joint long short-term memory (LSTM)…
