We investigate the features arising from hydrodynamic effects in graphene and phosphorene devices with finite heat sources, using ab initio calculations to go beyond Callaway's model and inform a full linearized scattering operator, and solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation through energy-based deviational Monte Carlo methods. We explain the mechanisms that create those hydrodynamic features, showing that boundary scattering and the relation of sample dimensions to the nonlocal length are the determinant factors, regardless of the relative importance of normal versus resistive scattering. From this point of view, the nonlocal length reflects the ability of scattering to randomize the heat flux, and we show that approximations made on the scattering operator may have, through the value of nonlocal length, qualitative consequences on the signatures of hydrodynamic behavior.
We report on the observation of the ratchet effect -- generation of direct electric current in response to external terahertz (THz) radiation -- in bilayer graphene, where inversion symmetry is broken by an asymmetric dual-grating gate potential. As a central result, we demonstrate that at high temperature, $T = 150~\textrm{K}$, the ratchet current decreases at high frequencies as $ \propto 1/ω^2$, while at low temperature, $T = 4.2~\textrm{K}$, the frequency dependence becomes much stronger $\propto 1/ω^6$. The developed theory shows that the frequency dependence of the ratchet current is ver…

We present an ab initio modeling framework to simulate Majorana transport in 2D semiconducting materials, paving the way for topological qubits based on 2D nanoribbons. By combining density-functional-theory and quantum transport calculations, we show that the signature of Majorana bound states (MBSs) can be found in 2D material systems as zero-energy modes with peaks in the local density-of-states. The influence of spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic fields on Majorana transport is studied for two relevant 2D materials, WSe2 and PbI2. To illustrate the capabilities of the proposed ab in…
One of the most striking signatures of Weyl fermions is their surface Fermi arcs. Less known is that Fermi arcs can also be localized at internal twin boundaries where two Weyl materials of opposite chirality meet. In this work, we derive constraints on the topology and connectivity of these "internal Fermi arcs." We show that internal Fermi arcs can exhibit transport signatures and propose two probes: quantum oscillations and a quantized chiral magnetic current. We propose merohedrally twinned B20 materials as candidates to host internal Fermi arcs, verified through both model and ab initio c…
In the presence of interactions, electrons in condensed-matter systems can behave hydrodynamically, exhibiting phenomena associated with classical fluids, such as vortices and Poiseuille flow. In most conductors, electron-electron interactions are minimized by screening effects, hindering the search for hydrodynamic materials; however, recently, a class of semimetals has been reported to exhibit prominent interactions. Here we study the current flow in the layered semimetal tungsten ditelluride by imaging the local magnetic field using a nitrogen-vacancy defect in a diamond. We image the spati…
