We present the Versatile Grasp Quality Convolutional Neural Network (VGQ-CNN), a grasp quality prediction network for 6-DOF grasps. VGQ-CNN can be used when evaluating grasps for objects seen from a wide range of camera poses or mobile robots without the need to retrain the network. By defining the grasp orientation explicitly as an input to the network, VGQ-CNN can evaluate 6-DOF grasp poses, moving beyond the 4-DOF grasps used in most image-based grasp evaluation methods like GQ-CNN. To train VGQ-CNN, we generate the new Versatile Grasp dataset (VG-dset) containing 6-DOF grasps observed from a wide range of camera poses. VGQ-CNN achieves a balanced accuracy of 82.1% on our test-split while generalising to a variety of camera poses. Meanwhile, it achieves competitive performance for overhead cameras and top-grasps with a balanced accuracy of 74.2% compared to GQ-CNN's 76.6%. We also propose a modified network architecture, FAST-VGQ-CNN, that speeds up inference using a shared encoder architecture and can make 128 grasp quality predictions in 12ms on a CPU. In this work, we provide a solution for posturing the anthropomorphic Robonaut-2 hand and arm for grasping based on visual information. A mapping from visual features extracted from a convolutional neural network (CNN) to grasp points is learned. We demonstrate that a CNN pre-trained for image classification can be applied to a grasping task based on a small set of grasping examples. Our approach takes advantage of the hierarchical nature of the CNN by identifying features that capture the hierarchical support relations between filters in different CNN layers and locating their 3D positions by…

In this paper we investigate how to effectively deploy deep learning in practical industrial settings, such as robotic grasping applications. When a deep-learning based solution is proposed, usually lacks of any simple method to generate the training data. In the industrial field, where automation is the main goal, not bridging this gap is one of the main reasons why deep learning is not as widespread as it is in the academic world. For this reason, in this work we developed a system composed by a 3-DoF Pose Estimator based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and an effective procedure to …
Recently, deep learning has been successfully applied to robotic grasp detection. Based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), there have been lots of end-to-end detection approaches. But end-to-end approaches have strict requirements for the dataset used for training the neural network models and it's hard to achieve in practical use. Therefore, we proposed a two-stage approach using particle swarm optimizer (PSO) candidate estimator and CNN to detect the most likely grasp. Our approach achieved an accuracy of 92.8% on the Cornell Grasp Dataset, which leaped into the front ranks of the exis…
The ability to grasp ordinary and potentially never-seen objects is an important feature in both domestic and industrial robotics. For a system to accomplish this, it must autonomously identify grasping locations by using information from various sensors, such as Microsoft Kinect 3D camera. Despite numerous progress, significant work still remains to be done in this field. To this effect, we propose a dictionary learning and sparse representation (DLSR) framework for representing RGBD images from 3D sensors in the context of determining such good grasping locations. In contrast to previously p…

Recent developments in the field of robot grasping have shown great improvements in the grasp success rates when dealing with unknown objects. In this work we improve on one of the most promising approaches, the Grasp Quality Convolutional Neural Network (GQ-CNN) trained on the DexNet 2.0 dataset. We propose a new architecture for the GQ-CNN and describe practical improvements that increase the model validation accuracy from 92.2% to 95.8% and from 85.9% to 88.0% on respectively image-wise and object-wise training and validation splits.

This paper presents a real-time, object-independent grasp synthesis method which can be used for closed-loop grasping. Our proposed Generative Grasping Convolutional Neural Network (GG-CNN) predicts the quality and pose of grasps at every pixel. This one-to-one mapping from a depth image overcomes limitations of current deep-learning grasping techniques by avoiding discrete sampling of grasp candidates and long computation times. Additionally, our GG-CNN is orders of magnitude smaller while detecting stable grasps with equivalent performance to current state-of-the-art techniques. The light-we…
In this work, we introduce a novel, end-to-end trainable CNN-based architecture to deliver high quality results for grasp detection suitable for a parallel-plate gripper, and semantic segmentation. Utilizing this, we propose a novel refinement module that takes advantage of previously calculated grasp detection and semantic segmentation and further increases grasp detection accuracy. Our proposed network delivers state-of-the-art accuracy on two popular grasp dataset, namely Cornell and Jacquard. As additional contribution, we provide a novel dataset extension for the OCID dataset, making it p…
Grasping and releasing objects would cause oscillations to delivery drones in the warehouse. To reduce such undesired oscillations, this paper treats the to-be-delivered object as an unknown external disturbance and presents an image-based disturbance observer (DOB) to estimate and reject such disturbance. Different from the existing DOB technique that can only compensate for the disturbance after the oscillations happen, the proposed image-based one incorporates image-based disturbance prediction into the control loop to further improve the performance of the DOB. The proposed image-based DOB…
This paper focuses on a robotic picking tasks in cluttered scenario. Because of the diversity of objects and clutter by placing, it is much difficult to recognize and estimate their pose before grasping. Here, we use U-net, a special Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), to combine RGB images and depth information to predict picking region without recognition and pose estimation. The efficiency of diverse visual input of the network were compared, including RGB, RGB-D and RGB-Points. And we found the RGB-Points input could get a precision of 95.74%.
Current end-to-end grasp planning methods propose grasps in the order of seconds that attain high grasp success rates on a diverse set of objects, but often by constraining the workspace to top-grasps. In this work, we present a method that allows end-to-end top-grasp planning methods to generate full six-degree-of-freedom grasps using a single RGB-D view as input. This is achieved by estimating the complete shape of the object to be grasped, then simulating different viewpoints of the object, passing the simulated viewpoints to an end-to-end grasp generation method, and finally executing the …

The teleoperation of robotic systems in medical applications requires stable and convenient visual feedback for the operator. The most accessible approach to delivering visual information from the remote area is using cameras to transmit a video stream from the environment. However, such systems are sensitive to the camera resolution, limited viewpoints, and cluttered environment bringing additional mental demands to the human operator. The paper proposes a novel system of teleoperation based on an augmented virtual environment (VE). The region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) is app…
Motivated by the stringent requirements of unstructured real-world where a plethora of unknown objects reside in arbitrary locations of the surface, we propose a voxel-based deep 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D CNN) that generates feasible 6-DoF grasp poses in unrestricted workspace with reachability awareness. Unlike the majority of works that predict if a proposed grasp pose within the restricted workspace will be successful solely based on grasp pose stability, our approach further learns a reachability predictor that evaluates if the grasp pose is reachable or not from robot's own expe…
This work provides an architecture to enable robotic grasp planning via shape completion. Shape completion is accomplished through the use of a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). The network is trained on our own new open source dataset of over 440,000 3D exemplars captured from varying viewpoints. At runtime, a 2.5D pointcloud captured from a single point of view is fed into the CNN, which fills in the occluded regions of the scene, allowing grasps to be planned and executed on the completed object. Runtime shape completion is very rapid because most of the computational costs of shape co…
This paper proposes a new deep learning approach to antipodal grasp detection, named Double-Dot Network (DD-Net). It follows the recent anchor-free object detection framework, which does not depend on empirically pre-set anchors and thus allows more generalized and flexible prediction on unseen objects. Specifically, unlike the widely used 5-dimensional rectangle, the gripper configuration is defined as a pair of fingertips. An effective CNN architecture is introduced to localize such fingertips, and with the help of auxiliary centers for refinement, it accurately and robustly infers grasp can…
Although, in the task of grasping via a data-driven method, closed-loop feedback and predicting 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) grasp rather than conventionally used 4DoF top-down grasp are demonstrated to improve performance individually, few systems have both. Moreover, the sequential property of that task is hardly dealt with, while the approaching motion necessarily generates a series of observations. Therefore, this paper synthesizes three approaches and suggests a closed-loop framework that can predict the 6DoF grasp in a heavily cluttered environment from continuously received vision observa…

In this paper, we introduce a Grasp Manifold Estimator (GraspME) to detect grasp affordances for objects directly in 2D camera images. To perform manipulation tasks autonomously it is crucial for robots to have such graspability models of the surrounding objects. Grasp manifolds have the advantage of providing continuously infinitely many grasps, which is not the case when using other grasp representations such as predefined grasp points. For instance, this property can be leveraged in motion optimization to define goal sets as implicit surface constraints in the robot configuration space. In …

In robotics, knowing the object states and recognizing the desired states are very important. Objects at different states would require different grasping. To achieve different states, different manipulations would be required, as well as different grasping. To analyze the objects at different states, a dataset of cooking objects was created. Cooking consists of various cutting techniques needed for different dishes (e.g. diced, julienne etc.). Identifying each of this state of cooking objects by the human can be difficult sometimes too. In this paper, we have analyzed seven different cooking …

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end grasp evaluation model to address the challenging problem of localizing robot grasp configurations directly from the point cloud. Compared to recent grasp evaluation metrics that are based on handcrafted depth features and a convolutional neural network (CNN), our proposed PointNetGPD is lightweight and can directly process the 3D point cloud that locates within the gripper for grasp evaluation. Taking the raw point cloud as input, our proposed grasp evaluation network can capture the complex geometric structure of the contact area between the gripper an…

In this paper we study grasp problem in dense cluster, a challenging task in warehouse logistics scenario. By introducing a two-step robust suction affordance detection method, we focus on using vacuum suction pad to clear up a box filled with seen and unseen objects. Two CNN based neural networks are proposed. A Fast Region Estimation Network (FRE-Net) predicts which region contains pickable objects, and a Suction Grasp Point Affordance network (SGPA-Net) determines which point in that region is pickable. So as to enable such two networks, we design a self-supervised learning pipeline to accu…

In developing such prostheses, the precise detection of brain motor actions is imperative for the Grasp-and-Lift (GAL) tasks. Because of the low-cost and non-invasive essence of Electroencephalography (EEG), it is widely preferred for detecting motor actions during the controls of prosthetic tools. This article has automated the hand movement activity viz GAL detection method from the 32-channel EEG signals. The proposed pipeline essentially combines preprocessing and end-to-end detection …

Machine vision cameras consist of a camera and a processing unit capable of on-board deep learning inference. The inference in these low-power hardware are done near the data …
An industrial connector insertion task requires submillimeter positioning and grasp pose compensation for a plug. Thus, highly accurate estimation of the relative pose between a plug and socket is fundamental for achieving the task. World models are promising technologies for visuomotor control because they obtain appropriate state representation to jointly optimize feature extraction and latent dynamics model. Recent studies show that the NewtonianVAE, a type of the world model, acquires latent space equivalent to mapping from images to physical coordinates. Proportional control can be achiev…
In the robotic industry, specular and textureless metallic components are ubiquitous. The 6D pose estimation of such objects with only a monocular RGB camera is difficult because of the absence of rich texture features. Furthermore, the appearance of specularity heavily depends on the camera viewpoint and environmental light conditions making traditional methods, like template matching, fail. In the last 30 years, pose estimation of the specular object has been a consistent challenge, and most related works require massive knowledge modeling effort for light setups, environment, or the object …
The conventional pose estimation of a 3D object usually requires the knowledge of the 3D model of the object. Even with the recent development in convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a 3D model is often necessary in the final estimation. In this paper, we propose a two-stage pipeline that takes in raw colored point cloud data and estimates an object's translation and rotation by running 3D convolutions on voxels. The pipeline is simple yet highly accurate: translation error is reduced to the voxel resolution (around 1 cm) and rotation error is around 5 degrees. The pipeline is also put to act…
