The standard alpha-disc model predicts an anti-correlation between the density of the inner accretion disc and the black hole mass times square of the accretion rate, as seen in higher mass ($M_{\rm BH}>10^{6} M_{\odot}$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this work, we test the predictions of the alpha-disc model and study the properties of the inner accretion flow for the low-mass end ($M_{\rm BH}\approx 10^{5-6}M_{\odot}$) of AGNs. We utilize a new high-density disc reflection model where the density parameter varies from $n_{\rm e}=10^{15}$ to $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and apply it to the broadband X-ray (0.3-10 keV) spectra of the low-mass AGN sample. The sources span a wide range of Eddington fractions and are consistent with being sub-Eddington or near-Eddington. The X-ray spectra reveal a soft X-ray excess below $\sim 1.5$ keV which is well modeled by high-density reflection from an ionized accretion disc of density $n_{\rm e}\sim 10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ on average. The results suggest a radiation pressure-dominated disc with an average of 70% fraction of the disc power transferred to the corona, consistent with that observed in higher mass AGNs. We show that the disc density higher than $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$ can result from the radiation pressure compression when the disc surface does not hold a strong magnetic pressure gradient. We find tentative evidence for a drop in black hole spin at low-mass regimes.
The cosmic X-ray background (XRB) spectrum and active galaxy number counts encode essential information about the spectral evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and have been successfully modeled by XRB synthesis models for many years. Recent measurements of the $8$--$24$ keV AGN number counts by NuSTAR and Swift-BAT are unable to be simultaneously described by existing XRB synthesis models, indicating a fundamental breakdown in our understanding of AGN evolution. Here we show that the $8$--$24$ keV AGN number counts can be successfully modeled with an XRB synthesis model in which the ref…
The X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) often exhibit an excess of emission above the primary power-law at energies <~ $2$ keV. Two models for the origin of this `soft excess' are ionized relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disc and Comptonization of thermal emission in a warm corona. Here, we introduce reXcor, a new AGN X-ray ($0.3$-$100$ keV) spectral fitting model that self-consistently combines the effects of both ionized relativistic reflection and the emission from a warm corona. In this model, the accretion energy liberated in the inner disc is distributed betwee…
Several X-ray spectral models for tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are available to constrain the properties of tori; however, the accuracy of these models has not been verified. We recently construct a code for the torus using Geant4, which can easily handle different geometries (Liu & Li 2014). Thus, we adopt the same assumptions as Murphy & Yaqoob (2009, hereafter MY09) and Brightman & Nandra (2011, hereafter BN11) and try to reproduce their spectra. As a result, we can reproduce well the reflection spectra and the strength of the Fe K$α$ line of MY09, for both $\NH=10^{24}$ and $10^{2…
We use the publicly available XMM-Newton archive to select a sample of 20 active galactic nuclei (AGN) known to exhibit reverberation signatures caused by the reflection of X-rays from the corona off the accretion disc that feeds the central black hole engine. Inverse Compton scattering by energetic electrons, coupled with accretion disc fluctuations give rise to the highly variable observed X-ray spectrum, the behaviour of which is still not fully understood. We use 121 observations in 3 - 4 distinct spectral states for each source and calculate the time lags as a function of frequency. We fi…
X-ray spectroscopy offers an opportunity to study the complex mixture of emitting and absorbing components in the circumnuclear regions of active galactic nuclei, and to learn about the accretion process that fuels AGN and the feedback of material to their host galaxies. We describe the spectral signatures that may be studied and review the X-ray spectra and spectral variability of active galaxies, concentrating on progress from recent Chandra, XMM-Newton and Suzaku data for local type 1 AGN. We describe the evidence for absorption covering a wide range of column densities, ionization and dyna…
We have analyzed spectra for all active galactic nuclei in the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) archive. We present long-term average values of absorption, Fe line equivalent width, Compton reflection and photon index, as well as calculating fluxes and luminosities in the 2-10 keV band for 100 AGN with sufficient brightness and overall observation time to yield high quality spectral results. We compare these parameters across the different classifications of Seyferts and blazars. Our distributions of photon indices for Seyfert 1's and 2's are consistent with the idea that Seyferts share a co…
X-ray reflection features observed from the innermost regions of accretion disks in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) allow important tests of accretion theory. In recent years it has been possible to use the Fe K line and reflection continuum to parametrize the ionization state of the irradiated inner accretion disk. Here, we collect 10 measurements of xi, the disk ionization parameter, from 8 AGNs with strong evidence for reflection from the inner accretion disk and good black hole mass estimates. We find strong statistical evidence (98.56% confidence) for a nearly linear correlation between xi …
Angular momentum, or spin, is a fundamental property of black holes (BHs), yet it is much more difficult to estimate than mass or accretion rate (for actively accreting systems). In recent years, high-quality X-ray observations have allowed for detailed measurements of the Fe K$α$ emission line, where relativistic line broadening allows constraints on the spin parameter (the X-ray reflection method). Another technique uses accretion disk models to fit the AGN continuum emission (the continuum-fitting, or CF, method). Although each technique has model-dependent uncertainties, these are the best…
Obscured AGNs provide an opportunity to study the material surrounding the central engine. Geometric and physical constraints on the absorber can be deduced from the reprocessed AGN emission. In particular, the obscuring gas may reprocess the nuclear X-ray emission producing a narrow Fe K$α$ line and a Compton reflection hump. In recent years, models of the X-ray reflection from an obscuring torus have been computed; however, although the reflecting gas may be dusty, the models do not yet take into account the effects of dust on the predicted spectrum. We study this problem by analyzing two se…
Reprocessed X-ray radiation carries important information about the structure and physical characteristics of the material surrounding the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). We report here on a newly developed simulation platform, RefleX, which allows to reproduce absorption and reflection by quasi-arbitrary geometries. We show here the reliability of our approach by comparing the results of our simulations with existing spectral models such as pexrav, MYTorus and BNTorus. RefleX implements both Compton scattering on free electrons and Rayleigh scattering and Compt…
We study the origin of the soft X-ray excess seen in the 'simple' Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy PG1244+026 using all available spectral-timing information. This object shows the standard switch between soft leading the hard band on long timescales, to the opposite behaviour on short timescales. This is interpreted as a combination of intrinsic fluctuations propagating down through the accretion flow giving the soft lead, together with reflection of the hard X-rays giving the soft lag. We build a full model of the spectral and time variability including both propagation and reflection, and compa…
Observationally, it is found that there is a strong correlation between the hard X-ray photon index $Γ$ and the Compton reflection scaling factor $\Re$ in active galactic nuclei. In this paper, we propose that the $Γ-\Re$ correlation can be explained within the framework of the condensation of the hot corona onto the cold accretion disc around a supermassive black hole. In the model, it is presumed that, initially, a vertically extended hot gas (corona) is supplied to the central supermassive black hole by capturing the interstellar medium and stellar wind. In this scenario, when the initial m…
We construct an X-ray spectral model for the clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN) using Geant4, which includes the physical processes of the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, Rayleigh scattering, $γ$ conversion, fluorescence line, and Auger process. Since the electrons in the torus are expected to be bounded instead of free, the deviation of the scattering cross section from the Klein-Nishina cross section has also been included, which changes the X-ray spectra by up to 25% below $10$ keV. We have investigated the effect of the clumpiness parameters on the reflection spectr…
We use the 4Ms CDF-S survey to place direct X-ray constraints on the ubiquity of z~2 heavily obscured AGNs in K<22 BzK galaxies. Forty seven of the 222 BzK galaxies in the central region of the CDF-S are detected at X-ray energies, 11 of which have hard X-ray spectral slopes (Gamma<1) indicating the presence of heavily obscured AGN activity. The other 36 X-ray detected BzK galaxies appear to be relatively unobscured AGNs and starburst galaxies; we use X-ray variability analyses over a rest-frame baseline of ~3 years to further confirm the presence of AGN activity in many of these systems. The …
We report the detection of relativistically broadened iron K alpha emission in the X-ray spectra of AGN detected in the 4Ms CDF-S. Using the Bayesian X-ray analysis (BXA) package, we fit 199 hard band (2-7 keV) selected sources in the redshift range z=0.5--4 with three models: (i) an absorbed power-law, (ii) the first model plus a narrow reflection component, and (iii) the second model with an additional relativistic broadened reflection. The Bayesian evidence for the full sample of sources selects the model with the additional broad component as being 10^5 times more probable to describe the …
The paper is a brief overview of the works by Iosif S. Shklovsky (1916--1985), carried out over almost 30 years (1955--1985), on the nature of activity (primarily in the radio frequency range) in nuclei of some galaxies. Worthy of note is Shklovsky's pioneering work of 1962, in which he made an attempt to consider possible evolutionary tracks of extragalactic radio sources by constructing an analog of the Herzsprung--Russel diagram for stars (radio luminosity at 160 MHz was taken instead of optical luminosity; total radio size at the same frequency, as the other parameter). Later works by othe…
We present the first study of an Iwasawa-Taniguchi/X-ray Baldwin effect for Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGN). We report a statistically significant anti-correlation between the rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of the narrow core of the neutral Fe K$α$ fluorescence emission line, ubiquitously observed in the reflection spectra of obscured AGN, and the mid-infrared 12$\,μ$m continuum luminosity (taken as a proxy for the bolometric AGN luminosity). Our sample consists of 72 Compton-thick AGN selected from pointed and deep-field observations covering a redshift range of $z\sim0.0014-3.7$…
We present the broadband (0.5-100 keV) spectra of three heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), NGC 1106, UGC 03752, and NGC 2788A, observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The targets are selected from the Swift/BAT 70-month catalog on the basis of high hardness ratio between above and below 10 keV, and their X-ray spectra are reported here for the first time. We apply three models, a conventional model utilizing an analytic reflection code and two Monte-Carlo based torus models with a doughnut-like geometry (MYTorus) and with a nearly spherical geometry (Ikeda toru…
In a previous paper, one of us calculated iron K$α$ line profiles emitted from possible accretion disks around traversable wormholes as a first step to use X-ray reflection spectroscopy to search for astrophysical wormholes in active galactic nuclei. In the present paper, we extend that work and construct an XSPEC model for the whole relativistic reflection spectrum. We apply our model to XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the supermassive object in MCG-6-30-15 and we check whether these observations prefer the hypothesis that the central body is a Kerr black hole or a traversable wormhole.…
We present a X-ray spectral analysis of a large sample of 25 'bare' active galactic nuclei, sources with little or no complicating intrinsic absorption, observed with Suzaku. Our work focuses on studying the potential contribution from relativistic disc reflection, and examining the implications of this interpretation for the intrinsic spectral complexities frequently displayed by AGN in the X-ray bandpass. During the analysis, we take the unique approach of attempting to simultaneously undertake a systematic analysis of the whole sample, as well as a detailed treatment of each individual sour…
We report the results of Suzaku broad band X-ray observations of the two narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRGs), 3C 403 and IC 5063. Combined with the Swift/BAT spectra averaged for 58 months, we are able to accurately constrain their spectral properties over the 0.5--200 keV band. The spectra of both nuclei are well represented with an absorbed cut-off power law, an absorbed reflection component from cold matter with an iron-K emission line, and an unabsorbed soft component, which gives a firm upper limit for the scattered emission. The reflection strength normalized to the averaged BAT flux is R…
The hard X-ray emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN), and in particular, the reflection component, is shaped by the innermost and outer regions of the galactic nucleus. Our main goal is to investigate the variation of the Compton hump amongst a population of sources and correlate it with other spectral properties to constrain the source geometry. We studied the NuSTAR hard X-ray spectra of a sample of 83 AGN and performed a detailed spectral analysis of each of them. Based on their spectral shape, we divided the sample into five categories and also studied their stacked spectra. We found a …
The broadband X-ray spectra of AGNs contains information about the nuclear environment from Schwarzschild radii scales to distances of ~1 pc. In addition, the average shape of the X-ray spectrum is an important input into X-ray background synthesis models. Here, local (z \approx 0) AGN luminosity functions (LFs) in five energy bands are used as a low-resolution, luminosity-dependent X-ray spectrometer in order to constrain the average AGN X-ray spectrum between 0.5 and 200 keV. The 15-55 keV LF measured by Swift-BAT is assumed to be the best determination of the local LF, and then a spectral m…
We report the first broad band X-ray spectra of the low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) NGC 1566 (type 1.5) and NGC 4941 (type 2) observed with Suzaku and Swift/BAT covering the 0.5-195 keV band. Both targets have hard X-ray luminosities of ~ 10^{41-42} ergs/s in the 15-55 keV band. The spectra of the nucleus are well reproduced by a sum of partially or fully covered transmitted emission and its reflection from the accretion disk, reprocessed emission from the torus accompanied by a strong narrow iron-Kαline, and a scattered component (for NGC 4941). We do not significantly detect a …
We collate active galactic nuclei (AGN) with reported detections of both relativistic reflection and ultra-fast outflows. By comparing the inclination of the inner disc from reflection with the line-of-sight velocity of the outflow, we show that it is possible to meaningfully constrain the geometry of the absorbing material. We find a clear relation between the velocity and inclination, and demonstrate that it can potentially be explained either by simple wind geometries or by absorption from the disc surface. Due to systematic errors and a shortage of high- quality simultaneous measurements o…
We have calculated the relativistic reflection component of the X-ray spectra of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our calculations have shown that the spectra can be significantly modified by the motion of the accretion flow and the gravity and rotation of the central black hole. The absorption edges in the spectra suffer severe energy shifts and smearing, and the degree of distortion depends on the system parameters, in particular, the inner radius of the accretion disk and the disk viewing inclination angles. The effects are significant. Fluorescent X-ray emission lines from …

We present a broadband X-ray analysis of a new homogeneous sample of 95 active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the 22-month Swift/BAT all-sky survey. For this sample we treated jointly the X-ray spectra observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL missions for the total spectral range of 0.5-250 keV. Photon index Γ, relative reflection R, equivalent width of Fe $K_α$ line (EW Fe $K_α$), hydrogen column density $N_{H}$, exponential cut-off energy $E_{c}$ and intrinsic luminosity $L_{corr}$ are determined for all objects of the sample. We investigated correlations Γ- R, EW Fe $K_α$ - $L_{corr}$, Γ- $E_{c}$, E…
Using long-term monitoring data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we have selected 23 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with sufficient brightness and overall observation time to derive broadband X-ray spectra from 3 to >100 keV. Our sample includes mainly radio-quiet Seyferts, as well as seven radio-loud sources. Given the longevity of the RXTE mission, the greater part of our data is spread out over more than a decade, providing truly long-term average spectra and eliminating inconsistencies arising from variability. We present long-term average values of absorption, Fe line parameters…
We show that X-ray reverberation mapping can be used to measure the distance to type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This is because X-ray photons originally emitted from the `corona' close to the black hole irradiate the accretion disc and are re-emitted with a characteristic `reflection' spectrum that includes a prominent $\sim 6.4$ keV iron emission line. The shape of the reflection spectrum depends on the irradiating flux, and the light-crossing delay between continuum photons observed directly from the corona and the reflected photons constrains the size of the disc. Simultaneously model…
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) selected Compton-thick ($\log N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2} \geq 24$) Active Galactic Nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of 3 objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra with models utilizing an analytic reflection code and those utilizing the Monte Carlo based model from an AGN torus by Ikeda et al. 2009. The main results are as follows. (1) The estimated intrinsic luminosity of a CTAGN strongly depends on the model; applyin…
X-ray reflection off the accretion disc surrounding a black hole, together with the associated broad iron K$α$ line, has been widely used to constrain the innermost accretion-flow geometry and black hole spin. Some recent measurements have revealed steep reflection emissivity profiles in a number of active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries. We explore the physically motivated conditions that give rise to the observed steep disc-reflection emissivity profiles. We perform a set of simulations based on the configuration of a possible future high-resolution X-ray mission. Computations are carried…
We have compared the 2001 XMM-Newton spectra of the stellar mass black hole binary XTE J1650-500 and the active galaxy MGC-6-30-15, focusing on the broad, excess emission features at ~4--7 keV displayed by both sources. Such features are frequently observed in both low mass X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. For the former case it is generally accepted that the excess arises due to iron emission, but there is some controversy over whether their width is partially enhanced by instrumental processes, and hence also over the intrinsic broadening mechanism. Meanwhile, in the latter case, t…
The reflection hump is a prominent feature in the hard X-ray spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Its exact shape and its correlation to other quantities provide valuable information about the inner and outer regions of an AGN. Our main goal is to study the reflection hump in a large sample of nearby AGN. We aim to investigate the evolution of reflection with absorption and its correlation with the spectral index. We analysed archived NuSTAR observations of the 70-month BAT catalogue AGN. By performing a detailed spectral analysis, we were able to constrain the spectral parameters and to …
We report the analysis of simultaneous XMM-Newton+NuSTAR observations of two low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGN), NGC 3998 and NGC 4579. We do not detect any significant variability in either source over the ~3 day length of the NuSTAR observations. The broad-band 0.5-60 keV spectrum of NGC 3998 is best fit with a cutoff power-law, while the one for NGC 4579 is best fit with a combination of a hot thermal plasma model, a power-law, and a blend of Gaussians to fit an Fe complex observed between 6 and 7 keV. Our main spectral results are the following: (1) neither source shows any refl…
The X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) unveil properties of matter around the super massive black hole (SMBH). We investigate the X-ray spectra of AGN focusing on Compton reflection and fluorescence, important processes of interaction between primary radiation and circum-nuclear material. Unresolved emission lines (most notably the Fe line) in the X-ray spectra of AGN indicate that this material is located far away from the SMBH. Contributions from the inner accretion disk, affected by relativistic effects, have also been detected in several cases. We studied the average X-ray spect…
The relativistic jets created by some active galactic nuclei are important agents of AGN feedback. In spite of this, our understanding of what produces these jets is still incomplete. X-ray observations, which can probe the processes operating in the central regions in immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole, the presumed jet launching point, are potentially particularly valuable in illuminating the jet formation process. Here, we present the hard X-ray NuSTAR observations of the radio-loud quasar 4C 74.26 in a joint analysis with quasi-simultaneous, soft X-ray Swift observations. Ou…
We systematically analyze the broadband (0.5--200 keV) X-ray spectra of hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected local low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) observed with {\it Suzaku} and {\it Swift}/BAT. The sample consists of ten LLAGNs detected with {\it Swift}/BAT with intrinsic 14--195 keV luminosities smaller than $10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ available in the {\it Suzaku} archive, covering a wide range of the Eddington ratio from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-2}$. The overall spectra can be reproduced with an absorbed cut-off power law, often accompanied by reflection components from distant cold matter,…
X-rays illuminating the accretion disc in active galactic nuclei give rise to an iron K line and its associated reflection spectrum which are lagged behind the continuum variability by the light-travel time from the source to the disc. The measured lag timescales in the iron band can be as short as $\sim R_g/c$, where $R_g$ is the gravitational radius, which is often interpreted as evidence for a very small continuum source close to the event horizon of a rapidly spinning black hole. However, the short lags can also be produced by reflection from more distant material, because the primary phot…
One distinctive feature of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) is the relatively weak reflection features they may display in the X-ray spectrum, which can result from the disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. Some material, however, must surround the active nucleus, i.e., the accretion flow itself and, possibly, a flattened-out or thinned torus. In this work, we study whether reflection is indeed absent or undetectable due to its intrinsically weak features together with the low statistics inherent to LLAGN. Here we focus on NGC 3718 ($L/L_{\rm Edd}\sim10^{-5}$…
I review the current status of X-ray reflection (a.k.a. broad iron line) based black hole spin measurements. This is a powerful technique that allows us to measure robust black hole spins across the mass range, from the stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries to the supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. After describing the basic assumptions of this approach, I lay out the detailed methodology focusing on "best practices" that have been found necessary to obtain robust results. Reflecting my own biases, this review is slanted towards a discussion of supermassive black hole (SM…
We present X-ray spectral analyses for three Seyfert 2 active galactic nuclei, NGC 424, NGC 1320, and IC 2560, observed by NuSTAR in the 3-79 keV band. The high quality hard X-ray spectra allow detailed modeling of the Compton reflection component for the first time in these sources. Using quasi-simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift/XRT data, as well as archival XMM-Newton data, we find that all three nuclei are obscured by Compton-thick material with column densities in excess of ~5 x $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, and that their X-ray spectra above 3 keV are dominated by reflection of the intrinsic continuum …
Over the last few years several models have been proposed to interpret the widespread soft excess observed in the X-ray spectra of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN). In particular, reflection from the photoionized accretion disc blurred by relativistic effects has proven to be successful in reproducing both the spectral shape and the variability pattern of many sources. As a further test to this scenario we present the analysis of a recent ~100 ks long Suzaku observation of Arakelian 120, a prototypical 'bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy in which no complex absorption system is expected to mimic a soft…
We present the study of a sample of seven "bare" active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed with Suzaku. We interpret the spectrum of these sources with a relativistic reflection component and we employ our model RELXILL_NK to test the Kerr nature of their supermassive black holes. We constrain the Johannsen deformation parameters $α_{13}$ and $α_{22}$, in which the Kerr metric is recovered when $α_{13} = α_{22} = 0$. All our measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the spacetime geometry around these supermassive objects is described by the Kerr solution. For some sources, we obtain qu…
We explore a disc origin for the highly-blueshifted, variable absorption lines seen in the X-ray spectrum of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13224-3809. The blueshift corresponds to a velocity of about 0.25c. Such features in other Active Galactic Nuclei are often interpreted as UltraFast Outflows (UFOs). The velocity is of course present in the orbital motions of the inner disk. The absorption lines in IRAS13224-3809 are best seen when the flux is low and the reflection component of the disk is strong relative to the power-law continuum. The spectra are consistent with a model in which t…
A common model invoked to describe the X-ray spectra of active galaxies includes a relativistically blurred reflection component, which in some cases can be the dominant contributor to the received flux. Alternative interpretations are often based around complex absorption, and to date it has proven difficult to determine between these two viable models. Recent works on SUZAKU observations of the active nuclei in NGC 1365, 1H 0419-577 and PDS 456 have found the presence of strong X-ray emission at high (~10-50 keV) energies, referred to as 'hard excesses', and it has been claimed this emission…
The UV to X-ray continuum of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is important for maintaining the ionisation and thermal balance of the warm absorbers (WAs). However, the spectra in the sensitive energy range $\sim \,13.6 -300 \ev$ are unobservable due to Galactic extinction. Moreover, many AGN show soft X-ray excess emission of varying strength in the $0.1-2\kev$ band whose origin is still highly debated. This soft-excess connects to the UV bump in the unobserved region of $13.6 -300 \ev$. Here we investigate the effect of the assumed physical model for the soft-excess on the flux of the unobserved …
An interesting feature in active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at low rate is the weakness of the reflection features in their X-ray spectra, which can result from the gradual disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. It has been suggested that low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) would have a different reflector configuration compared with high luminosity AGN, either covering a smaller fraction of the sky or simply having less material. Additionally, we note that the determination of the spectral index ($Γ$) and the cut-off energy of the primary power-law emission is affected by the…
To constrain the origin of the soft X-ray excess phenomenon seen in many active galactic nuclei, the intensity-correlated spectral analysis, developed by Noda et al. (2011b) for Markarian 509, was applied to wide-band (0.5-45 keV) Suzaku data of five representative objects with relatively weak reflection signature. They are the typical bare-nucleus type 1 Seyfert Fairall 9, the bright and typical type 1.5 Seyfert MCG-2-58-22, 3C382 which is one of the X-ray brightest broad line radio galaxies, the typical Seyfert-like radio loud quasar 4C+74.26, and the X-ray brightest radio quiet quasar MR225…
We present the results from broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT, two of the most luminous unobscured and obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei with hard X-ray luminosities of 10^{45.5} erg s^{-1} and 10^{44.9} erg s^{-1} (14--195 keV), respectively. Based on the radio core luminosity, we estimate that the X-ray spectrum of 3C 206 contains a significant (~ 60% in the 14--195 keV band) contribution from the jet, while it is negligible in PKS 0707-35. We can successfully model the spectra with the jet component (for 3C 206), the transmitted …
X-ray observations provide a powerful tool to probe the central engines of active galactic nuclei (AGN). A hard X-ray continuum is produced from deep within the accretion flow onto the supermassive black hole, and all optically thick structures in the AGN (the dusty torus of AGN unification schemes, broad emission line clouds, and the black hole accretion disk) "light up" in response to irradiation by this continuum. This White Paper describes the prospects for probing AGN physics using observations of these X-ray reflection signatures. High-resolution SXS spectroscopy of the resulting fluores…
The fuelling of active galactic nuclei (AGN) - via material propagated through the galactic disc or via minor mergers - is expected to leave an imprint on the alignment of the sub-pc disc relative to the host galaxy's stellar disc. Determining the inclination of the inner disc usually relies on the launching angle of the jet; here instead we use the inclination derived from reflection fits to a sample of AGN. We determine the distorting effect of unmodeled Fe XXV/XXVI features and, via extensive simulations, determine the difference in disc inclination resulting from the use of relxill compare…
Warm coronae, thick ($τ_{\mathrm{T}}\approx 10$-$20$, where $τ_{\mathrm{T}}$ is the Thomson depth) Comptonizing regions with temperatures of $\sim 1$ keV, are proposed to exist at the surfaces of accretion discs in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). By combining with the reflection spectrum, warm coronae may be responsible for producing the smooth soft excess seen in AGN X-ray spectra. This paper studies how a warm corona must adjust in order to sustain the soft excess through large changes in the AGN flux. Spectra from one-dimensional constant density and hydrostatic warm coronae models are calcu…
In intermediate polars (IPs), the intrinsic thermal emissions from white dwarfs (WDs) have typically been studied. Few reports have analyzed X-ray reflections from WDs. We recently developed an elaborate IP-reflection spectral model. Herein, we report the first application of a reflection model with an IP thermal model to the spectra of the brightest typical IP V1223 Sagittarii observed by the Suzaku and NuSTAR satellites. The model reasonably reproduces the spectra within the range of 5-78 keV and estimates the WD mass as 0.92$\pm$0.02 $M_\odot$. The WD mass estimated by the proposed model is…
We analyzed the spectral shape of the Compton shoulder around the neutral Fe-K$_α$ line of the Compton-thick type II Seyfert nucleus of the Circinus galaxy. The characteristics of this Compton shoulder with respect to the reflected continuum and Fe-K$_α$ line core intensity are a powerful diagnostics tool for analyzing the structure of the molecular tori, which obscure the central engine. We applied our Monte-Carlo-based X-ray reflection spectral model to the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating data and successfully constrained the various spectral parameters independently, using only the…
