We explore a disc origin for the highly-blueshifted, variable absorption lines seen in the X-ray spectrum of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13224-3809. The blueshift corresponds to a velocity of about 0.25c. Such features in other Active Galactic Nuclei are often interpreted as UltraFast Outflows (UFOs). The velocity is of course present in the orbital motions of the inner disk. The absorption lines in IRAS13224-3809 are best seen when the flux is low and the reflection component of the disk is strong relative to the power-law continuum. The spectra are consistent with a model in which the reflection component passes through a thin, highly-ionized absorbing layer at the surface of the inner disc, the blue-shifted side of which dominates the flux due to relativistic aberration (the disc inclination is about 70 deg). No fast outflow need occur beyond the disc.
The discovery of an ultrafast outflow has been reported in the z=0.0658 narrow line Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 (Parker et al. 2017a). The ultrafast outflow was first inferred through the detection of highly blueshifted absorption lines (Parker et al. 2017a) and then confirmed with a principal component analysis (PCA) (Parker et al. 2017b). Two of the reported properties of this outflow differed from those typically detected in other AGN with ultrafast outflows. First, the outflow velocity was found not to vary with v=0.236c +/- 0.006c. Second, the equivalent width of the highly blueshifted…
We present a spectral analysis of the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1h galaxy/ULIRG IRAS 05189-2524 taken in 2013. We find evidence for relativistic disk reflection in the broadband X-ray spectrum: a highly asymmetric broad Fe K$α$ emission line extending down to 3 keV and a Compton scattering component above 10 keV. Physical modeling with a self-consistent disk reflection model suggests the accretion disk is viewed at an intermediate angle with a super-solar iron abundance, and a mild constraint can be put on the high-energy cutoff of the power-law continuum. We test the d…
We present joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the bright, variable quasar IRAS 13349+2438. This combined dataset shows two clear iron absorption lines at 8 and 9 keV, which are most likely associated with two layers of mildly relativistic blueshifted absorption, with velocities of 0.14c and 0.27c. We also find strong evidence for a series of Ly$α$ absorption lines at intermediate energies in a stacked XMM-Newton EPIC-pn spectrum, at the same blueshift as the lower velocity iron feature. This is consistent with a scenario where an outflowing wind is radially stratified, so faster, high…
We present results from a deep, coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 00521-7054. The $NuSTAR$ data provide the first detection of this source in high-energy X-rays ($E > 10$ keV), and the broadband data show this to be a highly complex source which exhibits relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disc, further reprocessing by more distant material, neutral absorption, and evidence for ionised absorption in an extreme, ultrafast outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 0.4c$). Based on lamppost disc reflection models, we find evidence that the central superma…
We present a spectral variability study of the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of one of the most extreme Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, IRAS13224-3809. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by two main peculiar features, i) a strong soft excess with a steep rise below about 1.3 keV and ii) a deep drop in flux above 8.2 keV. We focus here on a reflection-based interpretation which interprets both features, as well as the large soft excess, in terms of partially ionized reflection off the inner accretion disc. We show that the two peculiar spectral features mentioned above can be reproduced b…
Previously, we modelled the X-ray spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224$-$3809 using a disc reflection model with a fixed electron density of $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$. An additional blackbody component was required to fit the soft X-ray excess below 2 keV. In this work, we analyse simultaneously five flux-resolved XMM-Newton spectra of this source comprising data collected over 2 Ms. A disc reflection model with an electron density of $n_{\rm e}\approx10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and an iron abundance of $Z_{\rm Fe}=3.2\pm0.5Z_{\odot}$ is used to fit the broad-band spectra of this source. No…
The extreme NLS1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 shows significant variability, frequency depended time lags, and strong Fe K line and Fe L features in the long 2011 XMM-Newton observation. In this work we study the spectral properties of IRAS 13224-3809 in detail, and carry out a series of analyses to probe the nature of the source, focusing in particular on the spectral variability exhibited. The RGS spectrum shows no obvious signatures of absorption by partially ionised material (warm absorbers). We fit the 0.3-10.0 keV spectra with a model that includes relativistic reflection from the inner accret…
We analyze the \textit{Chandra} High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation of the Seyfert $2$ AGN IRAS\,18325-5926. We detect a $v=-360^{+41}_{-66}$~km~s$^{-1}$ blueshifted ionized absorber in the X-ray spectrum, with photoionization parameter $\logξ=2.0^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ and hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H}=1.55^{+0.75}_{-0.38}\times10^{21}$~cm$^{-2}$. The absorber may be a photoionized wind originating in the obscuring torus/global covering around the black hole or outer edge of the accretion disk. The estimated mass outflow rate suggests that the supermassive black hol…
We present the first long \emph{Suzaku} observation of the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 09104+4109 which is dominated by a Type 2 AGN. The infrared to X-ray SED indicates that the source is an obscured quasar with a Compton-thin absorber. However, the 3$σ$ hard X-ray detection of the source with the \emph{BeppoSAX} PDS suggested a reflection-dominated, Compton-thick view. The high-energy detection was later found to be possibly contaminated by another Type 2 AGN, NGC 2785, which is only 17 arcmin away. Our new \emph{Suzaku} observation offers simultaneous soft and hard X-ray coverage and…
Using new XMM-Newton observations we detect hard X-ray time lags in the rapid variability of the Compton-thin Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 18325-5926. The higher-energy X-ray variations lag behind correlated lower-energy variations by up to ~3ks and the magnitude of the lag increases clearly with energy separation between the energy bands. We find that the lag-energy spectrum has a relatively simple log(E) shape. This is quite different in both shape and magnitude from the lags predicted by simple reflection models, but very similar to the hard X-ray lags often seen in black hole X-ray binaries. We a…
We report on the discovery of a UV absorption counterpart of a low-ionization X-ray ultra-fast outflow (UFO) in the Narrow-Line Seyfert-1 galaxy IRAS 17020+4544. This UV signature of the UFO is seen as a narrow and blueshifted Lyman-alpha absorption feature in the far-UV spectrum, taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The Lyman-alpha feature is found to be outflowing with a velocity of -23430 km/s (0.078 c). We carry out high-resolution UV spectroscopy and photoionization modeling to study the UFO that is seen in the HTS/COS spectrum. The results…
We present new XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the galaxy merger IRAS F05189-2524 which is classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) and optical Seyfert 2 at $z$ = 0.0426. We test a variety of spectral models which yields a best-fit consisting of an absorbed power law with emission and absorption features in the Fe K band. Remarkably, we find evidence for a blueshifted Fe K absorption feature at $E$ = 7.8 keV (rest-frame) which implies an ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with $v_{\mathrm{out}} = 0.11\ \pm\ 0.01c$. We calculate that the UFO in IRAS F05189-2524 has a mass outflow rat…
We present results of temporal and spectral analyses on four XMM-Newton EPIC pn observations of IRAS 17020+4544, a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with evidence of a radio jet. Analysis of the light curves reveals that this radio-loud source does not behave like the bulk population of its radio-quiet counterparts. A trend of spectral hardening with increased flux is found. Variability is found to increase with energy, though it decreases as the spectrum hardens. The first 40 ks of the most recent observation behave uniquely among the epochs, exhibiting a softer spectral state than at any other ti…
We present an analysis of the long-term X-ray variability of the extreme narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 using principal component analysis (PCA) and fractional excess variability (Fvar) spectra to identify model-independent spectral components. We identify a series of variability peaks in both the first PCA component and Fvar spectrum which correspond to the strongest predicted absorption lines from the ultra-fast outflow (UFO) discovered by Parker et al. (2017). We also find higher order PCA components, which correspond to variability of the soft excess and reflection fea…
The narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) IRAS 13224-3809 is the most X-ray variable active galactic nucleus (AGN), exhibiting 0.3-10 keV flux changes of over an order of magnitude within an hour. We report on the results of the 1.5 Ms 2016 XMM-Newton/NuSTAR observing campaign, which revealed the presence of a 0.24c ultra-fast outflow in addition to the well-known strong relativistic reflection. We also summarise other key results of the campaign, such as the first detection of a non-linear RMS-flux relation in an accreting source, correlations between outflow absorption strength/velocity and source fl…
We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising t…
Results are presented from a 500ks long XMM-Newton observation of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13224-3809. The source is rapidly variable on timescales down to a few 100s. The spectrum shows strong broad Fe-K and L emission features which are interpreted as arising from reflection from the inner parts of an accretion disc around a rapidly spinning black hole. Assuming a power-law emissivity for the reflected flux and that the innermost radius corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit, the black hole spin is measured to be 0.988 with a statistical precision better than one per …
IRAS 00521$-$7054 is the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of an extremely large Fe K$α$ line has been claimed. We report here on the analysis of a 100 ks Suzaku observation of the source. We confirm the existence of a very strong excess over the power-law X-ray continuum at $E\sim6$ keV ($EW\simeq 800$ eV), extending down to $\sim 4.5$ keV, and found that the X-ray spectrum of the source can be explained by two different models. i) An absorption scenario, in which the X-ray source is obscured by two fully-covering ionized absorbers, with a strong reflection component from neutral material…
We present new broadband X-ray observations of the type-I Seyfert galaxy IRAS 09149-6206, taken in 2018 with $XMM$-$Newton$, $NuSTAR$ and $Swift$. The source is highly complex, showing a classic 'warm' X-ray absorber, additional absorption from highly ionised iron, strong relativistic reflection from the innermost accretion disc and further reprocessing by more distant material. By combining X-ray timing and spectroscopy, we have been able to fully characterise the supermassive black hole in this system, constraining both its mass and - for the first time - its spin. The mass is primarily dete…
IRAS 18325-5926 is an X-ray bright, Compton-thin, type-2 Seyfert galaxy and it was the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of a broad Fe K-alpha emission line was claimed. However, although the structure of the Fe line appears broad, there is tentative evidence that it may comprise multiple lines. Nevertheless, previous analyses have only consisted of fitting standalone broad components to the Fe K band. Here, we have analyzed all available X-ray CCD data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton and ASCA to fully investigate the nature of the emission complex by testing broad-band physical models and alterna…
We present a detailed spectral analysis of the recent 1.5\,Ms XMM-Newton observing campaign on the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS~13224$-$3809, taken simultaneously with 500\,ks of NuSTAR data. The X-ray lightcurve shows three flux peaks, registering at about 100 times the minimum flux seen during the campaign, and rapid variability with a time scale of kiloseconds. The spectra are well fit with a primary powerlaw continuum, two relativistic-blurred reflection components from the inner accretion disk with very high iron abundance, and a simple blackbody-shaped model for the remaining soft e…
We present XMM-Newton spectra of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy IRAS 00521-7054. A strong feature at ~6 keV (observer's frame) can be formally fitted with a strong (EW=1.3+-0.3 keV in the rest frame) and broad Fe Ka line, extending down to 3 keV. The underlying X-ray continuum could be fitted with an absorbed powerlaw (with Gamma = 1.8+-0.2 and N_H = 5.9 x 10^22 cm^-2) plus a soft component. If due to relativistically smeared reflection by an X-ray illuminated accretion disk, the spin of the supermassive black hole is constrained to be 0.97^+0.03_-0.13 (errors at 90% confidence level for one interesting…
We present a spectral-variability analysis of the low-redshift quasar PDS 456 using principal component analysis. In the XMM-Newton data, we find a strong peak in the first principal component at the energy of the Fe absorption line from the highly blueshifted outflow. This indicates that the absorption feature is more variable than the continuum, and that it is responding to the continuum. We find qualitatively different behaviour in the Suzaku data, which is dominated by changes in the column density of neutral absorption. In this case, we find no evidence of the absorption produced by the h…
We report on strong X-ray variability and the Fe K band spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy IRAS 18325-5926 obtained from the 2001 XMM-Newton EPIC pn observation of a 120 ks duration. While the X-ray source is highly variable, the 8-10 keV band shows larger variability than that of the lower energies. Amplified 8-10 keV flux variations are associated with two prominent flares of the X-ray source during the observation. The Fe K emission is peaked at 6.6 keV with moderate broadening. It is likely to originate from a highly ionized disc with the ionization parameter of log xi ~3. The Fe K line flux r…
We present the results from an X-ray variability study of IRAS 13224-3809. This is probably the best source for X-ray reverberation studies since it is X-ray bright, extremely variable, and it has been extensively observed with XMM-Newton. We used all the archival XMM-Newton data from the three EPIC cameras (to increase the signal-to-noise) and, given the many observations of the source, we were able to compute the time-lags spectra in three different flux levels/periods. We fitted the time-lags and energy spectra, simultaneously, using a new X-ray reverberation code which computes the time de…
We performed time resolved spectroscopy of 1H0707-495 and IRAS 13224-3809 using long XMM-Newton observations. These are strongly variable narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies and show broad features around 1 keV that has been interpreted as relativistically broad Fe L$α$ lines. Such features are not clearly observed in other AGN despite sometimes having high iron abundance required by the best fitted blurred reflection models. Given the importance of these lines, we explore the possibility if rapid variability of spectral parameters may introduce broad bumps/dips artificially in the time averaged sp…
We present results from a coordinated IR-to-X-ray spectral campaign of the QSO IRAS 13349+2438. Optical spectra reveal extreme Eigenvector-1 characteristics, but the H-beta line width argues against a NLS1 classification; we refine z=0.10853 based on [O III]. We estimate a BH mass=10^9 Msun using 2 independent methods (H-beta line width & SED fits). Blue-shifted absorption (-950km/s & -75km/s) is seen for the 1st time in STIS UV spectra from Ly-alpha, NV, & CIV. The higher velocity UV lines are coincident with the lower-ionisation (xi~1.6) X-ray warm absorber lines. A dusty multiple ionization…
We use the publicly available XMM-Newton archive to select a sample of 20 active galactic nuclei (AGN) known to exhibit reverberation signatures caused by the reflection of X-rays from the corona off the accretion disc that feeds the central black hole engine. Inverse Compton scattering by energetic electrons, coupled with accretion disc fluctuations give rise to the highly variable observed X-ray spectrum, the behaviour of which is still not fully understood. We use 121 observations in 3 - 4 distinct spectral states for each source and calculate the time lags as a function of frequency. We fi…
The physical properties of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma, in supermassive black holes accreting at extreme Eddington rates, are still very unclear. Here we present the analysis of simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the hyper-Eddington Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 04416+1215, carried out in 2020. The main goal of these observations is to investigate the properties of the X-ray corona, as well as the structure of the accretion flow and of the circumnuclear environment, in this regime of extreme accretion. IRAS 04416+1215 has one of the highest Eddington ratio ($λ_{…
We present results from the optical, ultraviolet and X-ray monitoring of the NLS1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 taken with Swift and XMM-Newton during 2016. IRAS 13224-3809 is the most variable bright AGN in the X-ray sky and shows strong X-ray reflection, implying that the X-rays strongly illuminate the inner disc. Therefore, it is a good candidate to study the relationship between coronal X-ray and disc UV emission. However, we find no correlation between the X-ray and UV flux over the available ~40 day monitoring, despite the presence of strong X-ray variability and the variable part of the UV spe…
We present results from X-ray observations of the gravitationally lensed z = 1.51 AGN HS 0810+2554 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and XMM-Newton. Blueshifted absorption lines are detected in both observations at rest-frame energies ranging between ~1-12 keV at > 99% confidence. The inferred velocities of the outflowing components range between ~0.1c and ~0.4c. A strong emission line at ~6.8 keV accompanied by a significant absorption line at ~7.8 keV is also detected in the Chandra observation. The presence of these lines is a characteristic feature of a P-Cygni profile supportin…
The UV to X-ray continuum of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is important for maintaining the ionisation and thermal balance of the warm absorbers (WAs). However, the spectra in the sensitive energy range $\sim \,13.6 -300 \ev$ are unobservable due to Galactic extinction. Moreover, many AGN show soft X-ray excess emission of varying strength in the $0.1-2\kev$ band whose origin is still highly debated. This soft-excess connects to the UV bump in the unobserved region of $13.6 -300 \ev$. Here we investigate the effect of the assumed physical model for the soft-excess on the flux of the unobserved …

1H 0707-495 is the most convincing example of a supermassive black hole with an X-ray spectrum being dominated by extremely smeared, relativistic reflection, with the additional requirement of strongly supersoler iron abundance. However, here we show that the iron features in its 2--10 keV spectrum are rather similar to the archetypal wind dominated source, PDS 456. We fit all the 2--10 keV spectra from 1H 0707-495 using the same wind model as used for PDS 456, but viewed at higher inclination so that the iron absorption line is broader but not so blueshifted. This gives a good overall fit to …
We present the first high-resolution X-ray study of emission line variability with superorbital phase in the neutron star binary LMC X-4. Our analysis provides new evidence from X-ray spectroscopy confirming accretion disk precession as the origin of the superorbital period. The spectra, obtained with the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS), contain a number of emission features, including lines from hydrogen-like and helium-like species of N, O, Ne, and Fe, a narrow O VII RRC, and fluorescent emission from cold…
We use a 380 ks XMM-Newton high-resolution RGS spectrum to look for narrow spectral features from the nuclear environment of 1H0707-495. We do not find any evidence of a line-of-sight ionized wind (warm absorber). We do, however, detect broad emission lines, of width ~5000 km s^-1, consistent with O VIII Ly-alpha, N VII Ly-alpha, C VI Ly-alpha and a Fe XIX/Fe XX/Ne IX He-alpha blend. Intriguingly, these lines have both blueshifted and redshifted components, whose velocity shifts are consistent with an origin in an accretion disc at ~1600 R_g from the black hole. The features can be interpreted…
Accretion and ejection of matter in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are tightly connected phenomena and represent fundamental mechanisms regulating the growth of the central supermassive black hole and the evolution of the host galaxy. However, the exact physical processes involved are not yet fully understood. We present a high-resolution spectral analysis of a simultaneous \xmm\ and \nustar\ observation of the narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) AGN 1H 1934-063, during which the X-ray flux dropped by a factor of $\sim6$ and subsequently recovered within 140 kiloseconds. By means of the time-resolved a…
We present the first systematic broad-band X-ray study of super-Eddington accretion onto SMBHs with simultaneous {\it NuSTAR} and {\it XMM-Newton} or {\it Swift}/XRT observations of a sample of 8 super-Eddington accreting AGN with Eddington ratio $1<λ_{\rm Edd}<426$. We find that the SEAMBHs show a steep primary continuum slope as expected for sources accreting in the super Eddington regime, mostly dominated by relativistic reflection. The Iron K$α$ emission lines of the sources of our sample show relativistic broadening. In addition the equivalent widths of the narrow components of the Iron K…
We study reflected X-ray emission that returns to the accretion disc in the strong gravitational fields around black holes using General Relativistic ray tracing and radiative transfer calculations. Reflected X-rays that are produced when the inner regions of the disc are illuminated by the corona are subject to strong gravitational light bending, causing up to 47 per cent of the reflected emission to be returned to the disc around a rapidly spinning black hole, depending upon the scale height of the corona. The iron K line is enhanced relative to the continuum by 25 per cent, and the Compton …
We present briefly the first results obtained by the application of the KYNREFREV-reverberation model, which is ready for its use in XSPEC. This model computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law radiation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black-hole accretion disc. The assumptions of the model are: central Kerr black hole, surrounded by a Keplerian, geometrically thin, optically thick, ionised disc with the possibility of defining the radial density profile and a stationary hot point-like patch of plasma located o…

Using the unprecedented spectral resolution of the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton, we reveal dynamics of X-ray--emitting ejecta in the oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A. The RGS spectrum shows prominent K-shell lines, including O VII He_alpha forbidden and resonance, O VIII Ly_alpha, O VIII Ly_beta, and Ne IX He_alpha resonance, from an ejecta knot positionally coincident with an optical oxygen-rich filament (the so-called Omega filament in the northeast of the remnant). We find that the line centroids are blueshifted by 1480+/-140+/-60 km/s (the first and second…
Relativistically blueshifted absorption features of highly ionised ions, the so-called ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), have been detected in the X-ray spectra of a number of accreting supermassive black holes. If these features truly originate from accretion disc winds accelerated to more than 10 per cent of the speed of light, their energy budget is very significant and they can contribute to or even drive galaxy-scale feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, the UFO spectral features are often weak due to high ionisation of the outflowing material, and the inference of the wind physi…
X-ray reverberation has proven to be a powerful tool capable of probing the innermost region of accretion disks around compact objects. Current theoretical effort generally assumes that the disk is geometrically thin, optically thick and orbiting with Keplerian speed. Thus, these models cannot be applied to systems where super-Eddington accretion happens because the thin disk approximation fails in this accretion regime. Furthermore, state-of-the-art numerical simulations show that optically thick winds are launched from the super-Eddington accretion disks, and thereby changing the reflection …
