Automatic differentiation has become an important tool for optimization problems in computational science, and it has been applied to the Hartree-Fock method. Although the reverse-mode automatic differentiation is more efficient than the forward-mode, eigenvalue calculation in the self-consistent field method has impeded the use of the reverse-mode automatic differentiation. Here, we propose a method to directly minimize Hartree-Fock energy under the orthonormality constraint of the molecular orbitals using reverse-mode automatic differentiation by avoiding eigenvalue calculation. According to our validation, the proposed method was more stable than the conventional self-consistent field method and achieved comparable accuracy.
We present a density matrix approach for computing global solutions of restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock theory, based on semidefinite programming (SDP), that gives upper and lower bounds on the Hartree-Fock energy of quantum systems. While wave function approaches to Hartree-Fock theory yield an upper bound to the Hartree-Fock energy, we derive a semidefinite relaxation of Hartree-Fock theory that yields a rigorous lower bound on the Hartree-Fock energy. We also develop an upper-bound algorithm in which Hartree-Fock theory is cast as a SDP with a nonconvex constraint on the rank of the matri…
Hartree--Fock theory is one of the most ancient methods of computational chemistry, but up to the present day quantum chemical calculations on Hartree--Fock level or with hybrid density functional theory can be excessively time consuming. We compare three currently available techniques to reduce the computational demands of such calculations in terms of timing and accuracy.
We investigate the Hartree-Fock solutions to H2 in a minimal basis. We note the properties of the solutions and their disappearance with geometry and propose a new method, Holomorphic Hartree-Fock theory, where we modify the SCF equations to avoid disappearance of the solutions. We use these solutions as a basis for a non-orthogonal Configuration Interaction to produce a smooth binding curve over a complete range of geometries.
We investigate the existence of holomorphic Hartree-Fock solutions using a revised SCF algorithm. We use this algorithm to study the Hartree-Fock solutions for H$_{2}$ and H$_{4}^{2+}$ and report the emergence of holomorphic solutions at points of symmetry breaking. Finally, we find these holomorphic solutions for H$_{4}$ and use them as a basis for Non-Orthogonal Configuration Interaction at a range of rectangular geometries and show them to produce energies in good agreement with Full Configuration Interaction.
We have developed a couple of optimal damping algorithms (ODAs) for unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) calculations of open-shell molecular systems. A series of equations were derived for both concurrent and alternate constructions of alpha- and beta-Fock matrices in the integral-direct self-consistent-field (SCF) procedure. Several test calculations were performed to check the convergence behaviors. It was shown that the concurrent algorithm provides better performance than does the alternate one.
Automatic Differentiation (AD) is a powerful tool that allows calculating derivatives of implemented algorithms with respect to all of their parameters up to machine precision, without the need to explicitly add any additional functions. Thus, AD has great potential in quantum chemistry, where gradients are omnipresent but also difficult to obtain, and researchers typically spend a considerable amount of time finding suitable analytical forms when implementing derivatives. Here, we demonstrate that automatic differentiation can be used to compute gradients with respect to any parameter through…
The past several years have seen renewed interest in the use of symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock for the description of strong correlations. Unfortunately, these symmetry-projected mean-field methods do not adequately account for dynamic correlation. Presumably, this shortcoming could be addressed if one could combine symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock with a many-body method such as coupled cluster theory, but this is by no means straightforward because the two techniques are formulated in very different ways. However, we have recently shown that the singlet $S^2$-projected unrestricted Hartree-F…
Rayleigh Schrödinger perturbation theory corrections are developed for an algebraic Bethe ansatz of individual electrons. Numerical results are ambiguous and would need either an orbital optimization or a configuration interaction singles solution to be satisfactory. Two different expressions are computed to be certain that results are correct.
Fractional-spin errors are inherent in all current approximate density functionals, including Hartree-Fock theory, and their origin has been related to strong static correlation effects. The conventional way to encode fractional-spin calculations is to construct an ensemble density that scales between the high-spin and low-spin densities. In this article, we explore the variation of the Hartree-Fock fractional-spin (or ghost-interaction) error in one-electron systems using restricted and unrestricted ensemble densities, and the exact generalized Hartree-Fock representation. By considering the …
In this paper, we introduce a new representation of many body electron wave function and a few calculation results of the ground state energies of many body systems using that representation, which is systematically better than the Hartree-Fock approximation.
Analytical Hartree-Fock gradients with respect to the cell parameter have been implemented in the electronic structure code CRYSTAL, for the case of one and two-dimensional periodicity. As in most molecular codes, Gaussian type orbitals are used to express the wavefunction. Examples demonstrate that the gradients have a good accuracy.
The Hartree-Fock problem provides the conceptual and mathematical underpinning of a large portion of quantum chemistry. As efforts in quantum technology aim to enhance computational chemistry algorithms, the fundamental Hartree-Fock problem is a natural target. While quantum computers and quantum simulation offer many prospects for the future of modern chemistry, the Hartree-Fock problem is not a likely candidate. We highlight this fact from a number of perspectives including computational complexity, practical examples, and the full characterization of the energy landscapes for simple systems…
We report smooth relativistic Hartree-Fock pseudopotentials (also known as averaged relativistic effective potentials or AREPs) and spin-orbit operators for the atoms H to Ba and Lu to Hg. We remove the unphysical extremely non-local behaviour resulting from the exchange interaction in a controlled manner, and represent the resulting pseudopotentials in an analytic form suitable for use within standard quantum chemistry codes. These pseudopotentials are suitable for use within Hartree-Fock and correlated wave function methods, including diffusion quantum Monte Carlo calculations.
Simplified Hartree-Fock computations are carried out on the atoms He through Ne, using orthonormalized basis functions for the 1s, 2s and 2p orbitals dependent on three parameters. Using Mathematica with the new Apple M1 chip, computations require about 0.005 seconds of CPU time. Approximate energies within 1% of the best H-F values are thereby obtained, with an order of magnitude less computational effort.
We show that the leading term in the strong-interaction limit of the adiabatic connection that has as weak-interaction expansion the Moeller-Plesset perturbation theory can be fully determined from a functional of the Hartree-Fock density. We analyze this functional and highlight similarities and differences with the strong-interaction limit of the density-fixed adiabatic connection case of Kohn-Sham density functional theory.
Spin-projected Hartree-Fock is introduced as a particle-hole excitation ansatz over a symmetry-adapted reference determinant. Remarkably, this expansion has an analytic expression that we were able to decipher. While the form of the polynomial expansion is universal, the excitation amplitudes need to be optimized. This is equivalent to the optimization of orbitals in the conventional projected Hartree-Fock framework of non-orthogonal determinants. Using the inverse of the particle-hole expansion, we similarity transform the Hamiltonian in a coupled-cluster style theory. The left eigenvector of…
We present a density matrix approach for computing global solutions of Hartree-Fock theory, based on semidefinite programming (SDP), that gives upper and lower bounds on the Hartree-Fock energy of quantum systems. Equality of the upper- and lower-bound energies guarantees that the computed solution is the globally optimal solution of Hartree-Fock theory. For strongly correlated systems the SDP approach requires us to reassess the accuracy of the Hartree-Fock energies and densities from standard software packages for electronic structure theory. Calculations of the H$_{4}$ dimer and N$_{2}$ mol…
Electron correlation effects play a key role in stabilising two-electron atoms near the critical nuclear charge, representing the smallest charge required to bind two electrons. However, deciphering the importance of these effects relies on fully understanding the uncorrelated Hartree-Fock description. Here, we investigate the properties of the ground state wave function in the small nuclear charge limit using various symmetry-restricted Hartree-Fock formalisms. We identify the nuclear charge where spin-symmetry breaking occurs to give an unrestricted wave function that predicts the ionisation…
