In the context of general relativity, both energy and linear momentum constraints lead to the same equation for the evolution of the speed of free localized particles with fixed proper mass and structure in a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe. In this paper we extend this result by considering the dynamics of particles and fluids in the context of theories of gravity nonminimally coupled to matter. We show that the equation for the evolution of the linear momentum of the particles may be obtained irrespective of any prior assumptions regarding the form of the on-shell Lagrangian of the matter fields. We also find that consistency between the evolution of the energy and linear momentum of the particles requires that their volume-averaged on-shell Lagrangian and energy-momentum tensor trace coincide ($\mathcal L_{\rm on-shell}=T$). We further demonstrate that the same applies to an ideal gas composed of many such particles. This result implies that the two most common assumptions in the literature for the on-shell Lagrangian of a perfect fluid ($\mathcal L_{\rm on-shell}=\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal L_{\rm on-shell}=-ρ$, where $ρ$ and $\mathcal{P}$ are the proper density and pressure of the fluid, respectively) do not apply to an ideal gas, except in the case of dust (in which case $T=-ρ$).
In this paper we show that the on-shell Lagrangian of a perfect fluid depends on microscopic properties of the fluid, giving specific examples of perfect fluids with different on-shell Lagrangians but with the same energy-momentum tensor. We demonstrate that if the fluid is constituted by localized concentrations of energy with fixed rest mass and structure (solitons) then the average on-shell Lagrangian of a perfect fluid is given by ${\mathcal L}_m=T$, where $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We show that our results have profound implications for theories of gravity where the m…
A complete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description of the theory of self-gravitating light-like matter shells is given in terms of gauge-independent geometric quantities. For this purpose the notion of an extrinsic curvature for a null-like hypersurface is discussed and the corresponding Gauss-Codazzi equations are proved. These equations imply Bianchi identities for spacetimes with null-like, singular curvature. Energy-momentum tensor-density of a light-like matter shell is unambiguously defined in terms of an invariant matter Lagrangian density. Noether identity and Belinfante-Rosenfeld theor…
We report off-shell Noether currents obtained from off-shell Noether potentials for first-order general relativity described by $n$-dimensional Palatini and Holst Lagrangians including the cosmological constant. These off-shell currents and potentials are achieved by using the corresponding Lagrangian and the off-shell Noether identities satisfied by diffeomorphisms generated by arbitrary vector fields, local $SO(n)$ or $SO(n-1,1)$ transformations, `improved diffeomorphisms', and the `generalization of local translations' of the orthonormal frame and the connection. A remarkable aspect of our …
We show that the matter Lagrangian of an ideal fluid equals (up to a sign -depending on its definition and on the chosen signature of the metric) the total energy density of the fluid, i.e. rest energy density plus internal energy density.

We employ an old field theory model, formulated and discussed by Born, Infeld, Hoffman and Rosen during 1930s. Our method of cutting-gluing of spacetimes resolves the double-valuedness in the displacement vector D(E), pointed out by these authors. A characteristic feature of their model is to contain a logarithmic term, and by bringing forth such a Lagrangian anew, we aim to attract the interest of field theorists to such a Lagrangian. We adopt the Hoffman-Born-Infeld (HBI) Lagrangian in general relativity to construct black holes and investigate the possibility of viable thin-shell wormholes.…
We derive the off-shell Noether current and potential in the context of Horndeski theory, which is the most general scalar-tensor theory with a Lagrangian containing derivatives up to second order while yielding at most to second-order equations of motion in four dimensions. Then the formulation of conserved charges is proposed on basis of the off-shell Noether potential and the surface term got from the variation of the Lagrangian. As an application, we calculate the conserved charges of black holes in a scalar-tensor theory with non-minimal coupling between derivatives of the scalar field an…
Blow-up of solutions for the cosmological fluid equations, often dubbed shell-crossing or orbit crossing, denotes the breakdown of the single-stream regime of the cold-dark-matter fluid. At this instant, the velocity becomes multi-valued and the density singular. Shell-crossing is well understood in one dimension (1D), but not in higher dimensions. This paper is about quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) flow that depends on all three coordinates but differs only slightly from a strictly 1D flow, thereby allowing a perturbative treatment of shell-crossing using the Euler--Poisson equations written in L…
We investigate the appropriateness of the use of different Lagrangians to describe various components of the cosmic energy budget, discussing the degeneracies between them in the absence of nonminimal couplings to gravity or other fields, and clarifying some misconceptions in the literature. We further demonstrate that these degeneracies are generally broken for nonminimal coupled fluids, in which case the identification of the appropriate on-shell Lagrangian may become essential in order characterize the overall dynamics. We then show that models with the same on-shell Lagrangian may have dif…
Following a minisuperspace approach to the dynamics of a spherically symmetric shell, a reduced Lagrangian for the radial degree of freedom is derived directly from the Einstein-Hilbert action. The key feature of this new Lagrangian is its invariance under time reparametrization. Indeed, all classical and quantum dynamics is encoded in the Hamiltonian constraint that follows from that invariance. Thus, at the classical level, we show that the Hamiltonian constraint reproduces, in a simple gauge, Israel's matching condition which governs the evolution of the shell. In the quantum case, the vani…
In the standard model of cosmology, the background evolution of the Universe can in general be adequately described by general relativity and a uniform and isotropic metric minimally coupled with a collection of perfect fluids. These fluids are usually described by their energy-momentum tensor, which can be derived from the fluid's Lagrangian density. Under general relativity, the Lagrangian density is only relevant to the extent that it results in the correct energy-momentum tensor for a specific perfect fluid. This is not the case in theories that feature a nonminimal coupling (NMC) between …
Gravity is now understood to become simple on-shell. We sketch how it becomes simple also off-shell, when reformulated appropriately. Thus, we describe a simple Lagrangian for gravitons that makes use of a certain complex of differential operators. The Lagrangian is constructed analogously to that of Maxwell's theory, just using a different complex. The complex, and therefore also our description of gravitons, makes sense on any half-conformally flat four-dimensional manifold.
We investigate conserved charges in the low-energy effective field theory describing heterotic string theory. Starting with a general Lagrangian that consists of a metric, a scalar field, a vector gauge field, together with a two-form potential, we derive off-shell Noether potentials of the Lagrangian and generalize the Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) formalism to the off-shell level by establishing one-to-one correspondence between the ADT potential and the off-shell Noether potential. It is proved that the off-shell generalized ADT formalism is conformally invariant. Then we apply the formulation t…
The Lagrangian theory of structure formation in cosmological fluids, restricted to the matter model ``dust'', provides successful models of large-scale structure in the Universe in the laminar regime, i.e., where the fluid flow is single-streamed and ``dust''-shells are smooth. Beyond the epoch of shell-crossing a qualitatively different behavior is expected, since in general anisotropic stresses powered by multi-stream forces arise in collisionless matter. In this paper we provide the basic framework for the modeling of pressure-supported fluids, thus restricting attention to isotropic stress…
The barotropic ideal fluid with step and delta-function discontinuities coupled to Einstein's gravity is studied. The discontinuities represent star surfaces and thin shells; only non-intersecting discontinuity hypersurfaces are considered. No symmetry (like eg. the spherical symmetry) is assumed. The symplectic structure as well as the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian variational principles for the system are written down. The dynamics is described completely by the fluid variables and the metric on the fixed background manifold. The Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian are given in two forms: the vo…
