The squashed entanglement is a widely used entanglement measure that has many desirable properties. However, as it is based on an optimization over extensions of arbitrary dimension, one drawback of this measure is the lack of good algorithms to compute it. Here, we introduce a hierarchy of semidefinite programming lower bounds on the squashed entanglement.
Using the the convex semidefinite programming method and superoperator formalism we obtain the finite quantum tomography of some mixed quantum states such as: qudit tomography, N-qubit tomography, phase tomography and coherent spin state tomography, where that obtained results are in agreement with those of References \cite{schack,Pegg,Barnett,Buzek,Weigert}.
We apply semidefinite programming for designing 1 to 2 symmetric qubit quantum cloners. These are optimized for the average fidelity of their joint output state with respect to a product of multiple originals. We design 1 to 2 quantum bit cloners using the numerical method for finding completely positive maps approximating a nonphysical one optimally. We discuss the properties of the so-designed cloners.
We express the optimization of entanglement witnesses for arbitrary bipartite states in terms of a class of convex optimization problems known as Robust Semidefinite Programs (RSDP). We propose, using well known properties of RSDP, several new sufficient tests for the separability of mixed states. Our results are then generalized to multipartite density operators.
In this paper, we consider a simplified error-correcting problem: for a fixed encoding process, to find a cascade connected quantum channel such that the worst fidelity between the input and the output becomes maximum. With the use of the one-to-one parametrization of quantum channels, a procedure finding a suboptimal error-correcting channel based on a semidefinite programming is proposed. The effectiveness of our method is verified by an example of the bit-flip channel decoding.
We consider the problem of designing an optimal quantum detector to minimize the probability of a detection error when distinguishing between a collection of quantum states, represented by a set of density operators. We show that the design of the optimal detector can be formulated as a semidefinite programming problem. Based on this formulation, we derive a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal quantum measurement. We then show that the optimal measurement can be found by solving a standard (convex) semidefinite program followed by the solution of a set of linear equations…
In this paper we propose a sequence of tests which gives a definitive test for checking $2\times M$ separability. The test is definitive in the sense that each test corresponds to checking membership in a cone, and that the closure of the union of all these cones consists exactly of {\it all} $2 \times M$ separable states. Membership in each single cone may be checked via semidefinite programming, and is thus a tractable problem. This sequential test comes about by considering the dual problem, the characterization of all positive maps acting ${\mathbb C}^{2 \times 2} \to {\mathbb C}^{M\times …
The accuracies of modern quantum logic clocks have surpassed those of standard atomic fountain clocks. These clocks also provide a greater degree of control, because before and after clock queries, we are able to apply chosen unitary operations and measurements. Here, we take advantage of these choices and present a numerical technique designed to increase the accuracy of these clocks. We use a greedy approach, minimizing the phase variance of a noisy classical oscillator with respect to a perfect frequency standard after an interrogation step; we do not optimize over successive interrogations…
This paper studies a fundamental problem in convex optimization, which is to solve semidefinite programming (SDP) with high accuracy. This paper follows from the existing robust SDP-based interior point method analysis due to [Huang, Jiang, Song, Tao and Zhang, FOCS 2022]. While, the previous work only provides an efficient implementation in the classical setting. This work provides a novel quantum implementation. We give a quantum second-order algorithm with high-accuracy in both the optimality and the feasibility of its output, and its running time depending on $\log(1/ε)$ on well-conditione…
In a recent paper ([1]=quant-ph/0606035) it is shown how the optimal recovery operation in an error correction scheme can be considered as a semidefinite program. As a possible future improvement it is noted that still better error correction might be obtained by optimizing the encoding as well. In this note we present the result of such an improvement, specifically for the four-bit correction of an amplitude damping channel considered in [1]. We get a strict improvement for almost all values of the damping parameter. The method (and the computer code) is taken from our earlier study of such c…
We show that the recent hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations based on non-commutative polynomial optimization and reduced density matrix variational methods exhibits an interesting paradox when applied to the bosonic case: even though it can be rigorously proven that the hierarchy collapses after the first step, numerical implementations of higher order steps generate a sequence of improving lower bounds that converges to the optimal solution. We analyze this effect and compare it with similar behavior observed in implementations of semidefinite programming relaxations for commuta…
A new additive and semidefinite programming (SDP) computable entanglement measure is introduced to upper bound the amount of distillable entanglement in bipartite quantum states by operations completely preserving the positivity of partial transpose (PPT). This quantity is always smaller than or equal to the logarithmic negativity, the previously best known SDP bound on distillable entanglement, and the inequality is strict in general. Furthermore, a succinct SDP characterization of the one-copy PPT deterministic distillable entanglement for any given state is also obtained, which provides a s…
We propose a branch-and-bound algorithm for minimizing a bilinear functional of the form \[ f(X,Y) = \mathrm{tr}((X\otimes Y)Q)+\mathrm{tr}(AX)+\mathrm{tr}(BY) , \] of pairs of Hermitian matrices $(X,Y)$ restricted by joint semidefinite programming constraints. The functional is parametrized by self-adjoint matrices $Q$, $A$ and $B$. This problem generalizes that of a bilinear program, where $X$ and $Y$ belong to polyhedra. The algorithm converges to a global optimum and yields upper and lower bounds on its value in every step. Various problems in quantum information theory can be expressed in…
Quantum steering refers to the non-classical correlations that can be observed between the outcomes of measurements applied on half of an entangled state and the resulting post-measured states that are left with the other party. From an operational point of view, a steering test can be seen as an entanglement test where one of the parties performs uncharacterised measurements. Thus, quantum steering is a form of quantum inseparability that lies in between the well-known notions of Bell nonlocality and entanglement. Moreover, quantum steering is also related to several asymmetric quantum inform…
We use the language of semidefinite programming and duality to derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal Lewenstein-Sanpera Decomposition (LSD) of 2-qubit states. We first provide a simple and natural derivation of the Wellens-Kus equations for full-rank states. Then, we obtain a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal decomposition of rank-3 states. This closes the gap between the full-rank case, where optimality conditions are given by the Wellens-Kus equations, and the rank-2 case, where the optimal decomposition is analytically known. We also give an ana…
We show that a certain tensor norm, the completely bounded norm, can be expressed by a semidefinite program. This tensor norm recently attracted attention in the field of quantum computing, where it was used by Arunachalam, Briët and Palazuelos for characterizing the quantum query complexity of Boolean functions. Combined with their results, we obtain a new characterization of the quantum query complexity through semidefinite programming. Using the duality theory of semidefinite programming we obtain a new type of certificates for large query complexity. We show that our class of certificates …
Positive semidefinite programs are an important subclass of semidefinite programs in which all matrices involved in the specification of the problem are positive semidefinite and all scalars involved are non-negative. We present a parallel algorithm, which given an instance of a positive semidefinite program of size N and an approximation factor eps > 0, runs in (parallel) time poly(1/eps) \cdot polylog(N), using poly(N) processors, and outputs a value which is within multiplicative factor of (1 + eps) to the optimal. Our result generalizes analogous result of Luby and Nisan [1993] for positiv…
Quantum information leverages properties of quantum behaviors in order to perform useful tasks such as secure communication and randomness certification. Nevertheless, not much is known about the intricate geometric features of the set quantum behaviors. In this paper we study the structure of the set of quantum correlators using semidefinite programming. Our main results are (i) a generalization of the analytic description by Tsirelson-Landau-Masanes, (ii) necessary and sufficient conditions for extremality and exposedness, and (iii) an operational interpretation of extremality in the case of…
