Higher order necessary conditions for a minimizer of an optimal control problem are generally obtained for systems whose dynamics is continuously differentiable in the state variable. Here, by making use of the notion of set-valued Lie bracket we obtain a Goh-type condition for a control affine system with Lipschitz continuous dynamics and unbounded controls. In order to manage the simultaneous lack of smoothness of the adjoint equation and of the Lie bracket-like variations we make use of the notion of Quasi Differential Quotient. We conclude the paper with a worked out example where the established higher order condition is capable to rule out the optimality of a control verifying the standard maximum principle.
Minimax optimization problems are an important class of optimization problems arising from modern machine learning and traditional research areas. While there have been many numerical algorithms for solving smooth convex-concave minimax problems, numerical algorithms for nonsmooth convex-concave minimax problems are very rare. This paper aims to develop an efficient numerical algorithm for a structured nonsmooth convex-concave minimax problem. A majorized semi-proximal alternating coordinate method (mspACM) is proposed, in which a majorized quadratic convex-concave function is adopted for appr…
We show that the subgradient method converges only to local minimizers when applied to generic Lipschitz continuous and subdifferentially regular functions that are definable in an o-minimal structure. At a high level, the argument we present is appealingly transparent: we interpret the nonsmooth dynamics as an approximate Riemannian gradient method on a certain distinguished submanifold that captures the nonsmooth activity of the function. In the process, we develop new regularity conditions in nonsmooth analysis that parallel the stratification conditions of Whitney, Kuo, and Verdier and ext…
This paper considers a class of nonsmooth nonconvex-nonconcave min-max problems in machine learning and games. We first provide sufficient conditions for the existence of global minimax points and local minimax points. Next, we establish the first-order and second-order optimality conditions for local minimax points by using directional derivatives. These conditions reduce to smooth min-max problems with Fr{é}chet derivatives. We apply our theoretical results to generative adversarial networks (GANs) in which two neural networks contest with each other in a game. Examples are used to illustrat…

In this work we aim to solve a convex-concave saddle point problem, where the convex-concave coupling function is smooth in one variable and nonsmooth in the other and not assumed to be linear in either. The problem is augmented by a nonsmooth regulariser in the smooth component. We propose and investigate a novel algorithm under the name of OGAProx, consisting of an optimistic gradient ascent step in the smooth variable coupled with a proximal step of the regulariser, and which is alternated with a {proximal step} in the nonsmooth component of the coupling function. We consider the situations…
It is well known that there have been many numerical algorithms for solving nonsmooth minimax problems, numerical algorithms for nonsmooth minimax problems with joint linear constraints are very rare. This paper aims to discuss optimality conditions and develop practical numerical algorithms for minimax problems with joint linear constraints. First of all, we use the properties of proximal mapping and KKT system to establish optimality conditions. Secondly, we propose a framework of alternating coordinate algorithm for the minimax problem and analyze its convergence properties. Thirdly, we dev…
We provide the first positive result on the nonsmooth optimization landscape of robust principal component analysis, to the best of our knowledge. It is the object of several conjectures and remains mostly uncharted territory. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the absence of spurious local minima in the rank-one case. Our proof exploits the subdifferential regularity of the objective function in order to eliminate the existence quantifier from the first-order optimality condition known as Fermat's rule.
We give new convergence results of Anderson acceleration for the composite $\max$ fixed point problem. We prove that Anderson(1) and EDIIS(1) are q-linear convergent with a smaller q-factor than existing q-factors. Moreover, we propose a smoothing approximation of the composite max function in the contractive fixed point problem. We show that the smoothing approximation is a contraction mapping with the same fixed point as the composite $\max$ fixed point problem. Our results rigorously confirm that the nonsmoothness does not affect the convergence rate of Anderson acceleration method when we …

This paper focuses on the analysis of an optimal control problem governed by a nonsmooth quasilinear partial differential equation that models a stationary incompressible shear-thickening fluid. We start by studying the directional differentiability of the non-smooth term within the state equation as a prior step to demonstrate the directional differentiability of the solution operator. Thereafter, we establish a primal first order necessary optimality condition (Bouligand (B) stationarity), which is derived from the directional differentiability of the solution operator. By using a local regu…

The paper is devoted to an analysis of a new constraint qualification and a derivation of the strongest existing optimality conditions for nonsmooth mathematical programming problems with equality and inequality constraints in terms of Demyanov-Rubinov-Polyakova quasidifferentials under the minimal possible assumptions. To this end, we obtain a novel description of convex subcones of the contingent cone to a set defined by quasidifferentiable equality and inequality constraints with the use of a new constraint qualification. We utilize these description and constraint qualification to derive t…
Copositive optimization is a special case of convex conic programming, and it consists of optimizing a linear function over the cone of all completely positive matrices under linear constraints. Copositive optimization provides powerful relaxations of NP-hard quadratic problems or combinatorial problems, but there are still many open problems regarding copositive or completely positive matrices. In this paper, we focus on one such problem; finding a completely positive (CP) factorization for a given completely positive matrix. We treat it as a nonsmooth Riemannian optimization problem, i.e., a…

In this paper we propose a primal-dual dynamical approach to the minimization of a structured convex function consisting of a smooth term, a nonsmooth term, and the composition of another nonsmooth term with a linear continuous operator. In this scope we introduce a dynamical system for which we prove that its trajectories asymptotically converge to a saddle point of the Lagrangian of the underlying convex minimization problem as time tends to infinity. In addition, we provide rates for both the violation of the feasibility condition by the ergodic trajectories and the convergence of the objec…

We present a unified study of first and second order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for minimax and Chebyshev optimisation problems with cone constraints. First order optimality conditions for such problems can be formulated in several different forms: in terms of a linearised problem, in terms of Lagrange multipliers (KKT-points), in terms of subdifferentials and normal cones, in terms of a nonsmooth penalty function, in terms of cadres with positive cadre multipliers, and in an alternance form. We describe interconnections between all these forms of necessary and sufficient o…
We propose and analyze asymptotic proximal point (APP) methods to find the global minimizer for a class of nonconvex, nonsmooth, or even discontinuous multiple minima functions. The method is based on an asymptotic representation of nonconvex proximal points so that it can find the global minimizer without being trapped in saddle points, local minima, or even discontinuities. Our main result shows that the method enjoys the global linear convergence for such a class of functions. Furthermore, the method is derivative-free and its per-iteration cost, i.e., the number of function evaluations, is…
