We present a systematic study on a new task called dichotomous image segmentation (DIS) , which aims to segment highly accurate objects from natural images. To this end, we collected the first large-scale DIS dataset, called DIS5K, which contains 5,470 high-resolution (e.g., 2K, 4K or larger) images covering camouflaged, salient, or meticulous objects in various backgrounds. DIS is annotated with extremely fine-grained labels. Besides, we introduce a simple intermediate supervision baseline (IS-Net) using both feature-level and mask-level guidance for DIS model training. IS-Net outperforms various cutting-edge baselines on the proposed DIS5K, making it a general self-learned supervision network that can facilitate future research in DIS. Further, we design a new metric called human correction efforts (HCE) which approximates the number of mouse clicking operations required to correct the false positives and false negatives. HCE is utilized to measure the gap between models and real-world applications and thus can complement existing metrics. Finally, we conduct the largest-scale benchmark, evaluating 16 representative segmentation models, providing a more insightful discussion regarding object complexities, and showing several potential applications (e.g., background removal, art design, 3D reconstruction). Hoping these efforts can open up promising directions for both academic and industries. Project page: https://xuebinqin.github.io/dis/index.html.

Image segmentation of touching objects plays a key role in providing accurate classification for computer vision technologies. A new line profile based imaging segmentation algorithm has been developed to provide a robust and accurate segmentation of a group of touching corns. The performance of the line profile based algorithm has been compared to a watershed based imaging segmentation algorithm. Both algorithms are tested on three different patterns of images, which are isolated corns, single-lines, and random distributed formations. The experimental results show that the algorithm can segme…

The goal of interactive segmentation is to assist users in producing segmentation masks as fast and as accurately as possible. Interactions have to be simple and intuitive and the number of interactions required to produce a satisfactory segmentation mask should be as low as possible. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to interactive segmentation based on unconstrained contour clicks for initial segmentation and segmentation refinement. Our method is class-agnostic and produces accurate segmentation masks (IoU > 85%) for a lower number of user interactions than state-of-the-art methods…

Excellent performance has been achieved on instance segmentation but the quality on the boundary area remains unsatisfactory, which leads to a rising attention on boundary refinement. For practical use, an ideal post-processing refinement scheme are required to be accurate, generic and efficient. However, most of existing approaches propose pixel-wise refinement, which either introduce a massive computation cost or design specifically for different backbone models. Contour-based models are efficient and generic to be incorporated with any existing segmentation methods, but they often generate …

State-of-the-art instance-aware semantic segmentation algorithms use axis-aligned bounding boxes as an intermediate processing step to infer the final instance mask output. This often leads to coarse and inaccurate mask proposals due to the following reasons: Axis-aligned boxes have a high background to foreground pixel-ratio, there is a strong variation of mask targets with respect to the underlying box, and neighboring instances frequently reach into the axis-aligned bounding box of the instance mask of interest. In this work, we overcome these problems by proposing to use oriented boxes as …
In this paper we present our system for human-in-the-loop video object segmentation. The backbone of our system is a method for one-shot video object segmentation. While fast, this method requires an accurate pixel-level segmentation of one (or several) frames as input. As manually annotating such a segmentation is impractical, we propose a deep interactive image segmentation method, that can accurately segment objects with only a handful of clicks. On the GrabCut dataset, our method obtains 90% IOU with just 3.8 clicks on average, setting the new state of the art. Furthermore, as our method i…

Segmentation of colorectal cancerous regions from 3D Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is a crucial procedure for radiotherapy which conventionally requires accurate delineation of tumour boundaries at an expense of labor, time and reproducibility. While deep learning based methods serve good baselines in 3D image segmentation tasks, small applicable patch size limits effective receptive field and degrades segmentation performance. In addition, Regions of interest (RoIs) localization from large whole volume 3D images serves as a preceding operation that brings about multiple benefits in terms of …

Since manual anno- tation su ers limited reproducibility, arduous e orts, and excessive time, automatic segmentation is desired to process increasingly larger scale histopathological data. Recently, deep neural networks (DNNs), par- ticularly fully convolutional networks (FCNs), have been widely applied to biomedical image segmenta- tion, attaining much improved performance. At the same time, quantization of …

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task for agricultural robots to understand the surrounding environments in natural orchards. The recent development of the LiDAR techniques enables the robot to acquire accurate range measurements of the view in the unstructured orchards. Compared to RGB images, 3D point clouds have geometrical properties. By combining the LiDAR and camera, rich information on geometries and textures can be obtained. In this work, we propose a deep-learning-based segmentation method to perform accurate semantic segmentation on fused data from a LiDAR-Camera visual sensor.…
The anchor-based detectors handle the problem of scale variation by building the feature pyramid and directly setting different scales of anchors on each cell in different layers. However, it is difficult for box-wise anchors to guide the adaptive learning of scale-specific features in each layer because there is no one-to-one correspondence between box-wise anchors and pixel-level features. In order to alleviate the problem, in this paper, we propose a scale-customized weak segmentation (SCWS) block at the pixel level for scale customized object feature learning in each layer. By integrating …
In this paper, we propose to train convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with both binarized weights and activations, leading to quantized models specifically} for mobile devices with limited power capacity and computation resources. Previous works on quantizing CNNs seek to approximate the floating-point information using a set of discrete values, which we call value approximation, but typically assume the same architecture as the full-precision networks. In this paper, however, we take a novel 'structure approximation' view for quantization---it is very likely that a different architecture ma…
Weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) has recently gained much attention for its promise to train segmentation models only with image-level labels. Existing WSSS methods commonly argue that the sparse coverage of CAM incurs the performance bottleneck of WSSS. This paper provides analytical and empirical evidence that the actual bottleneck may not be sparse coverage but a global thresholding scheme applied after CAM. Then, we show that this issue can be mitigated by satisfying two conditions; 1) reducing the imbalance in the foreground activation and 2) increasing the gap between the f…

Semantic image segmentation is one of the most important tasks in medical image analysis. Most state-of-the-art deep learning methods require a large number of accurately annotated examples for model training. However, accurate annotation is difficult to obtain especially in medical applications. In this paper, we propose a spatially constrained deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to achieve smooth and robust image segmentation using inaccurately annotated labels for training. In our proposed method, image segmentation is formulated as a graph optimization problem that is solved by a DCNN…
In this paper, we propose an approach that exploits object segmentation in order to improve the accuracy of object detection. We frame the problem as inference in a Markov Random Field, in which each detection hypothesis scores object appearance as well as contextual information using Convolutional Neural Networks, and allows the hypothesis to choose and score a segment out of a large pool of accurate object segmentation proposals. This enables the detector to incorporate additional evidence when it is available and thus results in more accurate detections. Our experiments show an improvement …
Accurate semantic labeling of image pixels is difficult because intra-class variability is often greater than inter-class variability. In turn, fast semantic segmentation is hard because accurate models are usually too complicated to also run quickly at test-time. Our experience with building and running semantic segmentation systems has also shown a reasonably obvious bottleneck on model complexity, imposed by small training datasets. We therefore propose two simple complementary strategies that leverage context to give better semantic segmentation, while scaling up or down to train on differ…

The semantic image segmentation task presents a trade-off between test time accuracy and training-time annotation cost. Detailed per-pixel annotations enable training accurate models but are very time-consuming to obtain, image-level class labels are an order of magnitude cheaper but result in less accurate models. We take a natural step from image-level annotation towards stronger supervision: we ask annotators to point to an object if one exists. We incorporate this point supervision along with a novel objectness potential in the training loss function of a CNN model. Experimental results on…
In action understanding in indoor, we have to recognize human pose and action considering privacy. Although camera images can be used for highly accurate human action recognition, camera images do not preserve privacy. Therefore, we propose a new task for human instance segmentation from invisible information, especially airborne ultrasound, for action recognition. To perform instance segmentation from invisible information, we first convert sound waves to reflected sound directional images (sound images). Although the sound images can roughly identify the location of a person, the detailed sh…
High-resolution images for remote sensing applications are often not affordable or accessible, especially when in need of a wide temporal span of recordings. Given the easy access to low-resolution (LR) images from satellites, many remote sensing works rely on this type of data. The problem is that LR images are not appropriate for semantic segmentation, due to the need for high-quality data for accurate pixel prediction for this task. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework that unites a super-resolution and a semantic segmentation module in order to produce accurate thematic maps f…
In this work it is proposed a medical image segmentation pipeline for accurate bone segmentation from CT imaging. It is a two-step methodology, with a pre-segmentation step and a segmentation refinement step. First, the user performs a rough segmenting of the desired region of interest. Next, a fully automatic refinement step is applied to the pre-segmented data. The automatic segmentation refinement is composed by several sub-stpng, namely image deconvolution, image cropping and interpolation. The user-defined pre-segmentation is then refined over the deconvolved, cropped, and up-sampled vers…

However, deep learning models dependency on large data proves it to be an obstacle in medical image analysis because of insufficient data samples. Several data augmentation techniques have been used to mitigate this problem. We propose a new augmentation method by introducing adversarial learning attack techniques, specifically Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM). Furthermore, We have also introduced the concept of …
