We study the Sherali-Adams linear programming hierarchy in the context of promise constraint satisfaction problems (PCSPs). We characterise when a level of the hierarchy accepts an instance in terms of a homomorphism problem for an appropriate multilinear structure obtained through a tensor power of the constraint language. The geometry of this structure, which consists in a space of tensors satisfying certain symmetries, allows then to establish non-solvability of the approximate graph colouring problem via constantly many levels of Sherali-Adams.
Besides this primary application, our tensorisation construction introduces a new tool to the study of hierarchies of algorithmic relaxations for computational problems within (and, possibly, beyond) the context of constraint satisfaction. In particular, we see it as a key step towards the algebraic characterisation of the power of Sherali-Adams for PCSPs.
We consider Sherali-Adams linear programming relaxations for solving valued constraint satisfaction problems to optimality. The utility of linear programming relaxations in this context have previously been demonstrated using the lowest possible level of this hierarchy under the name of the basic linear programming relaxation (BLP). It has been shown that valued constraint languages containing only finite-valued weighted relations are tractable if, and only if, the integrality gap of the BLP is 1. In this paper, we demonstrate that almost all of the known tractable languages with arbitrary wei…
We give a precise algebraic characterisation of the power of Sherali-Adams relaxations for solvability of valued constraint satisfaction problems to optimality. The condition is that of bounded width which has already been shown to capture the power of local consistency methods for decision CSPs and the power of semidefinite programming for robust approximation of CSPs. Our characterisation has several algorithmic and complexity consequences. On the algorithmic side, we show that several novel and many known valued constraint languages are tractable via the third level of the Sherali-Adams rel…
We consider the Sherali-Adams (SA) refutation system together with the unusual binary encoding of certain combinatorial principles. For the unary encoding of the Pigeonhole Principle and the Least Number Principle, it is known that linear rank is required for refutations in SA, although both admit refutations of polynomial size. We prove that the binary encoding of the Pigeonhole Principle requires exponentially-sized SA refutations, whereas the binary encoding of the Least Number Principle admits logarithmic rank, polynomially-sized SA refutations. We continue by considering a refutation syst…
We study the approximability of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) by linear programming (LP) relaxations. We show that for every CSP, the approximation obtained by a basic LP relaxation, is no weaker than the approximation obtained using relaxations given by $Ω\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}\right)$ levels of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy on instances of size $n$. It was proved by Chan et al. [FOCS 2013] that any polynomial size LP extended formulation is no stronger than relaxations obtained by a super-constant levels of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy.. Combining this with our result also i…
Let $G$ be any $n$-vertex graph whose random walk matrix has its nontrivial eigenvalues bounded in magnitude by $1/\sqrtΔ$ (for example, a random graph $G$ of average degree~$Θ(Δ)$ typically has this property). We show that the $\exp\Big(c \frac{\log n}{\log Δ}\Big)$-round Sherali--Adams linear programming hierarchy certifies that the maximum cut in such a~$G$ is at most $50.1\%$ (in fact, at most $\tfrac12 + 2^{-Ω(c)}$). For example, in random graphs with $n^{1.01}$ edges, $O(1)$ rounds suffice; in random graphs with $n \cdot \text{polylog}(n)$ edges, $n^{O(1/\log \log n)} = n^{o(1)}$ rounds …
It has been shown that for a general-valued constraint language $Γ$ the following statements are equivalent: (1) any instance of $\operatorname{VCSP}(Γ)$ can be solved to optimality using a constant level of the Sherali-Adams LP hierarchy; (2) any instance of $\operatorname{VCSP}(Γ)$ can be solved to optimality using the third level of the Sherali-Adams LP hierarchy; (3) the support of $Γ$ satisfies the "bounded width condition", i.e., it contains weak near-unanimity operations of all arities. We show that if the support of $Γ$ violates the bounded width condition then not only is $\operatorna…
We give a new, simplified and detailed account of the correspondence between levels of the Sherali-Adams relaxation of graph isomorphism and levels of pebble-game equivalence with counting (higher-dimensional Weisfeiler-Lehman colour refinement). The correspondence between basic colour refinement and fractional isomorphism, due to Tinhofer (1986, 1991) and Ramana, Scheinerman and Ullman (1994), is re-interpreted as the base level of Sherali-Adams and generalised to higher levels in this sense by Atserias and Maneva (2012) and Malkin (2014), who prove that the two resulting hierarchies interlea…
Random constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) such as random $3$-SAT are conjectured to be computationally intractable. The average case hardness of random $3$-SAT and other CSPs has broad and far-reaching implications on problems in approximation, learning theory and cryptography. In this work, we show subexponential lower bounds on the size of linear programming relaxations for refuting random instances of constraint satisfaction problems. Formally, suppose $P : \{0,1\}^k \to \{0,1\}$ is a predicate that supports a $t-1$-wise uniform distribution on its satisfying assignments. Consider the …
The constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is concerned with homomorphisms between two structures. For CSPs with restricted left-hand side structures, the results of Dalmau, Kolaitis, and Vardi [CP'02], Grohe [FOCS'03/JACM'07], and Atserias, Bulatov, and Dalmau [ICALP'07] establish the precise borderline of polynomial-time solvability (subject to complexity-theoretic assumptions) and of solvability by bounded-consistency algorithms (unconditionally) as bounded treewidth modulo homomorphic equivalence. The general-valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP) is a generalisation of the CSP conce…
We show that for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), sub-exponential size linear programming relaxations are as powerful as $n^{Ω(1)}$-rounds of the Sherali-Adams linear programming hierarchy. As a corollary, we obtain sub-exponential size lower bounds for linear programming relaxations that beat random guessing for many CSPs such as MAX-CUT and MAX-3SAT. This is a nearly-exponential improvement over previous results, previously, it was only known that linear programs of size $n^{o(\log n)}$ cannot beat random guessing for any CSP (Chan-Lee-Raghavendra-Steurer 2013). Our bounds are obtain…
In this paper, we study the integrality gap of the Knapsack linear program in the Sherali- Adams and Lasserre hierarchies. First, we show that an integrality gap of 2 - ε persists up to a linear number of rounds of Sherali-Adams, despite the fact that Knapsack admits a fully polynomial time approximation scheme [27,33]. Second, we show that the Lasserre hierarchy closes the gap quickly. Specifically, after t rounds of Lasserre, the integrality gap decreases to t/(t - 1). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first positive result that uses more than a small number of rounds in the Lasserre…
We prove super-polynomial lower bounds on the size of linear programming relaxations for approximation versions of constraint satisfaction problems. We show that for these problems, polynomial-sized linear programs are exactly as powerful as programs arising from a constant number of rounds of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy. In particular, any polynomial-sized linear program for Max Cut has an integrality gap of 1/2 and any such linear program for Max 3-Sat has an integrality gap of 7/8.
We give two results concerning the power of the Sum-of-Squares(SoS)/Lasserre hierarchy. For binary polynomial optimization problems of degree $2d$ and an odd number of variables $n$, we prove that $\frac{n+2d-1}{2}$ levels of the SoS/Lasserre hierarchy are necessary to provide the exact optimal value. This matches the recent upper bound result by Sakaue, Takeda, Kim and Ito. Additionally, we study a conjecture by Laurent, who considered the linear representation of a set with no integral points. She showed that the Sherali-Adams hierarchy requires $n$ levels to detect the empty integer hull, a…
We study the power of the bounded-width consistency algorithm in the context of the fixed-template Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP). Our main technical finding is that the template of every PCSP that is solvable in bounded width satisfies a certain structural condition implying that its algebraic closure-properties include weak near unanimity polymorphisms of all large arities. While this parallels the standard (non-promise) CSP theory, the method of proof is quite different and applies even to the regime of sublinear width. We also show that, in contrast with the CSP world, the …
