An intriguing regime of universal charge transport at high entropy density has been proposed for periodically driven interacting one-dimensional systems with Bloch bands separated by a large single-particle band gap. For weak interactions, a simple picture based on well-defined Floquet quasiparticles suggests that the system should host a quasisteady state current that depends only on the populations of the system's Floquet-Bloch bands and their associated quasienergy winding numbers. Here we show that such topological transport persists into the strongly interacting regime where the single-particle lifetime becomes shorter than the drive period. Analytically, we show that the value of the current is insensitive to interaction-induced band renormalizations and lifetime broadening when certain conditions are met by the system's non-equilibrium distribution function. We show that these conditions correspond to a quasisteady state. We support these predictions through numerical simulation of a system of strongly interacting fermions in a periodically-modulated chain of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dots. Our work establishes universal transport at high entropy density as a robust far from equilibrium topological phenomenon, which can be readily realized with cold atoms in optical lattices.
Many experimentally relevant quantum spin chains are approximately integrable, and support long-lived quasiparticle excitations. A canonical example of integrable model of quantum magnetism is the XXZ spin chain, for which energy spreads ballistically, but, surprisingly, high-temperature spin transport can be diffusive or superdiffusive. We review the transport properties of this model using an intuitive quasiparticle picture that relies on the recently introduced framework of generalized hydrodynamics. We discuss how anomalous linear response properties emerge from hierarchies of quasiparticl…
We reveal a continuous dynamical heating transition between a prethermal and an infinite-temperature stage in a clean, chaotic periodically driven classical spin chain. The transition time is a steep exponential function of the drive frequency, showing that the exponentially long-lived prethermal plateau, originally observed in quantum Floquet systems, survives the classical limit. Even though there is no straightforward generalization of Floquet's theorem to nonlinear systems, we present strong evidence that the prethermal physics is well described by the inverse-frequency expansion. We relat…
Experimental evidence of the Higgs mode in strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gases had not been observed until recently [Behrle et al., Nat. Phys. 14, 781 (2018)]. Due to the coupling with other collective modes and quasiparticle excitations, generating stable Higgs-mode oscillations is challenging. We study how to excite long-lived Higgs-mode oscillations in a homogeneous superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover. We find that the Higgs mode can be excited by time-periodically modulating the scattering length at an appropriate amplitude and frequency. However, even for a modulation fr…
We simulate the dynamics of a disordered interacting spin chain subject to a quasi-periodic time-dependent drive, corresponding to a stroboscopic Fibonacci sequence of two distinct Hamiltonians. Exploiting the recursive drive structure, we can efficiently simulate exponentially long times. After an initial transient, the system exhibits a long-lived glassy regime characterized by a logarithmically slow growth of entanglement and decay of correlations analogous to the dynamics at the many-body delocalization transition. Ultimately, at long time-scales, which diverge exponentially for weak or ra…
In the strongly interacting limit of the Hubbard model localized double-occupancies form effective hard-core bosonic excitations, called a doublons, which are long-lived due to energy conservation. Using time-dependent density-matrix renormalisation group we investigate numerically the dynamics of doublons arising from the sudden expansion of a spatially confined band-insulating state in one spatial dimension. By analysing the occupation scaling of the natural orbitals within the many-body state, we show that doublons dynamically quasicondense at the band edges, consistent with the spontaneous…
Time periodic driving serves not only as a convenient way to engineer effective Hamiltonians, but also as a means to produce intrinsically dynamical phases that do not exist in the static limit. A recent example of the latter are 2D chiral Floquet (CF) phases exhibiting anomalous edge dynamics that pump discrete packets of quantum information along one direction. In non-fractionalized systems with only bosonic excitations, this pumping is quantified by a dynamical topological index that is a rational number -- highlighting its difference from the integer valued invariant underlying equilibrium…
