While recent gravitational wave observations by LIGO and Virgo allow for tests of general relativity in the extreme gravity regime, these observations are still blind to a large swath of phenomena outside these instruments' sensitivity curves. Future gravitational-wave detectors, such as LISA, will enable probes of longer-duration and lower-frequency events. In particular, LISA will enable the characterization of the non-linear dynamics of extreme mass-ratio inspirals, when a small compact object falls into a supermassive black hole. In this paper, we study the motion of test particles around spinning black holes in two quadratic gravity theories: scalar Gauss-Bonnet and dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. We show that geodesic trajectories around rotating black holes in these theories are likely to not have a fourth constant of the motion. In particular, we show that Poincaré sections of the orbital phase space present chaotic features that will affect the inspiral of small compact objects into supermassive black holes in these theories. Nevertheless, the characteristic size of these chaotic features is tiny and their location in parameter space is very close to the event horizon of the supermassive black hole. Therefore, the detection of such chaotic features with LISA is likely very challenging, at best.
The expected tensor-to-scalar ratio estimate of the upcoming CMB mission probe measurements may establish a lower value of the ratio than the currently obtained value. It can be described in terms of a single field chaotic inflation model along with the curvaton or quantum gravity or their combined effect. Consequently, the role of quantum gravity or curvaton in the dynamics of the early universe may not be ruled out. The curvaton scenario and quantum gravity effect can be tested experimentally.
In this paper, we discuss inflationary scenario via scalar field and fluid cosmology for anisotropic homogeneous universe model in $f(R)$ gravity. We consider an equation of state which corresponds to quasi-de Sitter expansion and investigate the effect of anisotropy parameter for different values of deviation parameter. We evaluate potential models like linear, quadratic and quartic which correspond to chaotic inflation. We construct the observational parameters for power-law model of $f(R)$ gravity and construct the graphical analysis of tensor-scalar ratio and spectral index which indicates…
In this paper, we investigate chaotic inflation from scalar field subjected to potential in the framework of $f(R^2, P, Q)$-gravity, where we add a correction to Einstein's gravity based on a function of the square of the Ricci scalar $R^2$, the contraction of the Ricci tensor $P$, and the contraction of the Riemann tensor $Q$. The Gauss-Bonnet case is also discussed. We give the general formalism of inflation, deriving the slow-roll parameters, the $e$-folds number, and the spectral indexes. Several explicit examples are furnished, namely we will consider the cases of massive scalar field and…
Stimulated with the recent discovery of B-mode by BICEP2, we discuss the relation between a Higgs inflation and a chaotic inflation with quadratic potential. Starting with a generalized Higgs inflation model, we derive a condition for obtaining the quadratic chaotic inflation. It is shown that the running of the Higgs self-coupling constant in the Jordan frame plays a decisive role when the generalized Higgs inflation model coincides with the Higgs inflation model in a small-field limit.
We discuss locally Weyl (scale) covariant generalisation of quadratic curvature gravity theory in three dimensions using Riemann-Cartan-Weyl space-times. We show that this procedure of Weyl gauging yields a consistent generalisation for a particular class of quadratic curvature gravity theories which includes the New Massive Gravity theory.
The quadratic curvature lagrangians having metric field equations with second order trace are constructed relative to an orthonormal coframe. In $n>4$ dimensions, pure quadratic curvature lagrangian having second order trace constructed contains three free parameters in the most general case. The fourth order field equations of some of these models, in arbitrary dimensions, are cast in a particular form using the Schouten tensor. As a consequence, the field equations for the New massive gravity theory are related to those of the Topologically massive gravity. In particular, the conditions unde…
We discuss the production of massive relic coherent gravitons in a particular class of f(R) gravity which arises from string theory and their possible imprint in Cosmic Microwave Background. In fact, in the very early universe these relic gravitons could have acted as slow gravity waves. They may have then acted to focus the geodesics of radiation and matter. Therefore, their imprint on the later evolution of the universe could appear as filaments and domain wall in the Universe today. In that case, the effect on Cosmic Microwave Background should be analogous to the effect of water waves, whi…
Black hole solutions in pure quadratic theories of gravity are interesting since they allow to formulate a set of scale-invariant thermodynamics laws. Recently, we have proven that static scale-invariant black holes have a well-defined entropy, which characterizes equivalent classes of solutions. In this paper, we generalize these results and explore the thermodynamics of rotating black holes in pure quadratic gravity.
The deformed z=2 Horava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant w leads to a nonrelativistic "mixmaster" cosmological model. The potential of theory is given by the sum of IR and UV potentials in the ADM Hamiltonian formalism. It turns out that adding the UV-potential cannot suppress chaotic behaviors existing in the IR-potential.
Quadratic curvature gravity equations are projected to a complex null coframe by using the algebra of exterior forms and expressed in terms of the spinor quantities defined originally by Newman and Penrose. As an application, a new family of impulsive gravitational wave solutions propagating in various type D backgrounds is introduced.
For the quadratic theory of gravity with a scalar field, exact solutions are found for gravitational-wave models in Shapovalov~I~type spacetimes, which do not arise in models of the general theory of relativity. The theory of gravity under consideration can effectively describe the early stages of the dynamics of the universe. Type I Shapovalov spaces are the most general form of gravitational-wave Shapovalov spacetimes, whose metric in privileged coordinate systems depends on three variables, including the wave variable. For Einstein vacuum spacetimes, these wave models degenerate into simple…
We show that chaotic classical dynamics associated to the volume of discrete grains of space leads to quantal spectra that are gapped between zero and nonzero volume. This strengthens the connection between spectral discreteness in the quantum geometry of gravity and tame ultraviolet behavior. We complete a detailed analysis of the geometry of a pentahedron, providing new insights into the volume operator and evidence of classical chaos in the dynamics it generates. These results reveal an unexplored realm of application for chaos in quantum gravity.
We show that the so-called chaos bound, proposed by Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford, can be violated in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. In particular, it is possible to select a new gravitational Lyapunov parameter, controlling chaotization of circular trajectories, in black hole photo-sphere, that can exceed the Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford thermal bound. This feature alters the standard quasi-normal modes and ringdown phase after black hole merging with intriguing implications for future gravitational wave detections and black hole shadow measurements. It is a general characteristic for sev…
The two gravitomagnetic effects which influence bodies orbiting around a gravitational source are the geodetic effect and the Lense-Thirring effect. The former describes the precession angle of the axis of a spinning gyroscope while in orbit around a nonrotating gravitational source whereas the latter provides a correction for this angle in the case of a spinning source. In this paper we derive the relevant equations in quadratic gravity and relate them to their equivalents in general relativity. Starting with an investigation into Kepler's third law in quadratic gravity with a scalar field, t…
We show that several features of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model are in fact universal properties of two-dimensional Maxwell-dilaton gravity theories with a broad class of asymptotics. These theories satisfy a flow equation with the structure of a dimensionally reduced TTbar deformation, and exhibit chaotic behavior signaled by a maximal Lyapunov exponent. One consequence of our results is a no-go theorem for smooth flows from an asymptotically AdS2 region to a de Sitter fixed point.
Since all Einstein spacetimes are vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in four dimensions, in this paper we study various aspects of non-Einstein vacuum solutions to this theory. Most such known solutions are of traceless Ricci and Petrov type N with a constant Ricci scalar. Thus we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant which leads to a substantial simplification of the field equations. We prove that a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci tensor of type N and aligned Weyl tensor of any Petrov type is necessarily a Kundt spacetime. This will considerably simplify the sear…
In this paper, we study the Casimir effect in a curved spacetime described by gravitational actions quadratic in the curvature. In particular, we consider the dynamics of a massless scalar field confined between two nearby plates and compute the corresponding mean vacuum energy density and pressure in the framework of quadratic theories of gravity. Since we are interested in the weak-field limit, as far as the gravitational sector is concerned we work in the linear regime. Remarkably, corrections to the flat spacetime result due to extended models of gravity (although very small) may appear at…

A classical evolution in chaotic inflationary models starts at high energy densities with semi-classical initial conditions presumably consistent with universal quantum nature of all the fundamental forces. That is each quantum contributes the same amount to the energy density. We point out the upper limit on this amount inherent in this approach, so that all the quanta are inside the weak-coupling domain. We discuss this issue in realistic models with modified gravity, $R^2$- and Higgs-inflations, emphasizing the specific change of the initial conditions with metric frame, while all the quant…
We discuss the emergence of black hole shadow and photon-sphere in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. It is shown that the shadow is exponentially sensitive to linear instabilities of metric coming from some $f(R)$ solutions. Thus, the instabilities of photon circular trajectories, delimiting the black hole photon-sphere, are double exponentialized. Specifically we individuate two Lyapunov exponents, rather than only one, related to two different sources of chaos in geodesic orbits as a sort of butterfly effect. Such a result violates the black hole chaos bound proposed by Maldacena, Shenker and S…
We consider (1+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity with a reflecting dynamical boundary. The boundary cuts off the region of strong coupling and makes our model causally similar to the spherically-symmetric sector of multidimensional gravity. We demonstrate that this model is exactly solvable at the classical level and possesses an on-shell SL(2,R) symmetry. After introducing general classical solution of the model, we study a large subset of soliton solutions. The latter describe reflection of matter waves off the boundary at low energies and formation of black holes at energies above critical. Th…
We investigate the dynamics of closed FRW universe and anisotropic Bianchi type-IX universe characterized by two scale factors in a gravity theory including a higher curvature (Gauss-Bonnet) term. The presence of the cosmological constant creates a critical point of saddle type in the phase space of the system. An orbit starting from a neighborhood of the separatrix will evolve toward the critical point, and it eventually either expands to the de Sitter space or collapses to the big crunch. In the closed FRW model, the dynamics is reduced to hyperbolic motions in the two-dimensional center man…
The Israel equations for thin shells in General Relativity are derived directly from the least action principle. The method is elaborated for obtaining the equations for double layers in quadratic gravity from the least action principle.
We give an exact solution of the quadratic gravity in D dimensions. The solution is a plane fronted wave metric with a cosmological constant. This metric solves not only the full quadratic gravity field equations but also the linearized ones which include the linearized equations of the recently found critical gravity. A subset of the solutions change the asymptotic structure of the anti-de Sitter space due to their logarithmic behavior.
We present a simplified formulation of massive gravity where the Higgs fields have quadratic kinetic term. This new formulation allows us to prove in a very explicit way that all massive gravity theories considered so far inevitably have Boulware-Deser ghost in non-trivial fluctuations of background metric.
