In this work, we present detailed $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy investigations of (Co$_{0.97}$$^{57}$Fe$_{0.03}$)$_{4}$Nb$_{2}$O$_{9}$ compound to study its possible magnetic structures. We have shown that the previously reported magnetic structures can not satisfactorily describe our low temperature Mössbauer spectra. Therefore, in combination with theoretical calculations, we have proposed a modulated helicoidal magnetic structure that can be used to simulate the whole series of our low temperature Mössbauer spectra. Our results suggest that the combination of previously reported different magnetic structures are only approximations of the average magnetic structure from our modulated helicoidal model. We anticipate that the proposed modulated non-collinear magnetic structure might shed light on the understanding of the complex magnetoelectric effects observed in this system.
Motivated by the discovery of spiral and modulated collinear phases in several magnetic materials, we investigate the magnetic properties of Heisenberg spin S=1/2 antiferromagnets in 2 and 3 dimensions, with frustration arising from 2nd-neighbor couplings in one axial direction (the ANNNH model). Our results clearly demonstrate the presence of an incommensurate spiral phase at T=0 in 2 dimensions, extending to finite temperatures in 3 dimensions. The crossover between Néel and spiral order occurs at a value of the frustration parameter considerably above the classical value 0.25, a sign of sub…
In the orthorhombic manganites o-RMnO3, where R is a heavy rare earth (R = Gd-Yb), the Mn3+ sublattice is known to undergo two magnetic transitions. The low temperature phase has an antiferromagnetic structure (collinear or elliptical), which has been well characterized by neutron diffraction in most of these compounds. The intermediate phase, occurring in a narrow temperature range (a few K), is documented for R = Gd-Ho as a collinear modulated structure, incommensurate with the lattice spacings. We report here on a 57Fe Mössbauer study of 2% 57Fe doped o-YbMnO3, where the spin only Fe3+ ion …
We present a 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy study of the two incommensurate magnetic phases in the multiferroic material FeVO4. We devise lineshapes appropriate for planar elliptical and collinear modulated magnetic structures and show that they reproduce very well the Mössbauer spectra in FeVO4, in full qualitative agreement with a previous neutron diffraction study. Quantitatively, our spectra provide precise determinations of the characteristics of the elliptical and modulated structures which are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction results. We find that the hyperfine field elliptic…

Through a combination of neutron diffraction and Landau theory we describe the spin ordering in the ground state of the quadruple perovskite manganite CaMn7O12 - a magnetic multiferroic supporting an incommensurate orbital density wave that onsets above the magnetic ordering temperature, TN1 = 90 K. The multi-k magnetic structure in the ground state was found to be a nearly-constant-moment helix with modulated spin helicity, which oscillates in phase with the orbital occupancies on the Mn3+ sites via trilinear magneto-orbital coupling. Our phenomenological model also shows that, above TN2 = 48…
The ground-state magnetic structures of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in recently discovered RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductors have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction measurements. It is found that as the superconductivity gets suppressed with the increase of Ni doping, the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice diminishes, corresponding to the decrease of the rotation angle between the moments in neighboring Eu layers. The ferromagnetic Eu layers are helically modulated along the $\mathit{c}$ axis with an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector in both the…
We study the ground-state magnetic phase diagram of a spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic two-leg ladder in the presence of period two lattice units modulated, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction along the legs. We consider the case of collinear DM vectors and strong rung exchange and magnetic field. In this limit we map the initial ladder model onto the effective spin $σ=1/2$ XXZ chain and study the latter using the continuum-limit bosonization approach. We identified four quantum phase transitions and corresponding critical magnetic fields, which mark transitions from the spin gapped regimes int…
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…

Neutron diffraction and thermodynamics techniques were used to probe the evolution of the magnetic properties of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C. A succession of magnetic modes was observed as x is varied: the longitudinal modulated k=(0.55,0,0) state at x=0 is transformed into a collinear k=([nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>) antiferromagnetic state at x= 0.2, 0.4; then into a transverse c-axis modulated k=(0,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{3}</LaTeX>) mode at x= 0.6, and finally into a simple ferromagnetic structure at x= 0.8 and 1. Concomitantl…
We report new results of a 57Fe Mössbauer study of multiferroic 3R-AgFeO2 powder samples performed in a wide temperature range, including two points, TN1 ~ 14 K and TN2 ~ 9 K, of magnetic phase transitions. At the intermediate temperature range, TN2 < T < TN1, the 57Fe Mössbauer spectra can be described in terms of collinear spin-density-waves (SDW) with the inclusion of many high-order harmonics, indicating that the real magnetic structure of this ferrite appears to be more complicated than a pure sinusoidally modulated SDW. The spectra at low temperatures, T < TN2, consist of a Zeeman patter…
Magnetic topological semimetals present open questions regarding the interplay of crystal symmetry, magnetism, band topology, and electron correlations. $LnSb_{x}Te_{2-x-δ}$ (Ln= lanthanide) is a family of square-net-derived topological semimetals that allows compositional control of band filling, and access to different topological states via an evolving charge density wave (CDW) distortion. Previously studied Gd and Ce members containing a CDW have shown complex magnetic phase diagrams, which implied that spins localized on Ln interact with the CDW, but to this date, no magnetic structures h…
