The ground-state magnetic structures of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in recently discovered RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductors have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction measurements. It is found that as the superconductivity gets suppressed with the increase of Ni doping, the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice diminishes, corresponding to the decrease of the rotation angle between the moments in neighboring Eu layers. The ferromagnetic Eu layers are helically modulated along the $\mathit{c}$ axis with an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector in both the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEu(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ and the superconducting ferromagnet RbEu(Fe$_{0.93}$Ni$_{0.07}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$. Such a helical structure transforms into a purely collinear ferromagnetic structure for non-superconducting RbEu(Fe$_{0.91}$Ni$_{0.09}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$, with all the Eu$^{2+}$ spins lying along the tetragonal (1 1 0) direction. The evolution from helical to collinear ferromagnetic order of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins with increasing Ni doping is supported by first-principles calculations. The variation of the rotation angle between adjacent Eu$^{2+}$ layers can be well explained by considering the change of magnetic exchange couplings mediated by the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction.
The Fe1+xTe phase diagram consists of two distinct magnetic structures with collinear order present at low interstitial iron concentrations and a helical phase at large values of x with these phases separated by a Lifshitz point. We use unpolarized single crystal diffraction to confirm the helical phase for large interstitial iron concentrations and polarized single crystal diffraction to demonstrate the collinear order for the iron deficient side of the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering show that the fluctuations associated with this collinear order are predominate…
We explore a phenomenological phase diagram for the magnetic helical state with 90$^{\circ}$ turn angle between neighboring spins in the external magnetic field. Such state is formed by the Eu spin layers in the superconducting iron arsenide RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$. The peculiarity of this spin configuration is that it is not realized in the standard Heisenberg model with bilinear exchange interactions. A minimum model allowing for such a state requires the biquadratic nearest-neighbor interaction term. In addition, in tetragonal materials the 90$^\circ$ helix state may be stabilized by the in-pl…
The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnet…
Long-range ordering of magnetic dipoles in bulk materials gives rise to a broad range of magnetic structures, from simple collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, to complex magnetic helicoidal textures stabilized by competing exchange interactions. In contrast, in the context of dipolar order in dielectric crystals, only parallel (ferroelectric) and antiparallel (antiferroelectric) collinear alignments of electric dipoles are typically considered. Here, we report an observation of incommensurate helical ordering of electric dipoles by light hole-doping of the quadruple perovskite BiMn7O12…
$\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ has recently attracted considerable attention as a magnetic Weyl semimetal exhibiting concomitant transport anomalies at room temperature. The topology of the electronic bands, their relation to the magnetic ground state and their nonzero Berry curvature lie at the heart of the problem. The examination of the full magnetic Hamiltonian reveals otherwise hidden aspects of these unusual physical properties. Here, we report the full spin wave spectra of $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ measured over a wide momentum - energy range by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. Using a linear…
We derive compact analytical expressions for the coupled spin-charge susceptibility of a clean helical metal at the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator (TI). These expressions lead to unconventional non-collinear RKKY interactions between two impurity magnetic moments placed on the surface of a TI, and predict the generation of electric currents by time-dependent magnetic moments. We determine the influence of gate and bias voltages on the interlayer exchange coupling between two single-domain ferromagnetic monolayers deposited on top of a TI.
We study the quantum dynamics/fluctuation of the cycloidal helical magnet in terms of the Schwinger boson approach. In sharp contrast to the classical fluctuation, the quantum fluctuation is collinear in nature which gives rise to the collinear spin density wave state slightly above the helical cycloidal state as the temperature is lowered. Physical properties such as the reduced elliptic ratio of the spiral, the neutron scattering and infrared absorption spectra are discussed from this viewpoint with the possible relevance to the quasi-one dimensional LiCu$_2$O$_2$ and LiCuVO$_4$.
We present a model of classical Heisenberg spins on a Hollandite lattice, which has been developed to describe the magnetic properties of $α$-MnO$_2$ and similar compounds. The model has nearest neighbor interacting spins, however the strength and the sign of spin-spin interactions is anisotropic and depends on the nature of the bonds. Our analysis shows that the Hollandite lattice supports four different incommensurate and helical magnetic ground states depending on the relative strengths and signs of spin-spin interactions. We show that the incommensurate helical ground states appear due to …
We perform a theoretical study of a non-collinear Ising ferrimagnetic spin chain inspired by the compound Co(hfac)2NITPhOMe. The basic building block of its structure contains one Cobalt ion and one organic radical each with a spin 1/2. The exchange interaction is strongly anisotropic and the corresponding axes of anisotropy have a period three helical structure. We introduce and solve a model Hamiltonian for this spin chain. We show that the present compound is very close to a so-called disorder point at which there is a massive ground state degeneracy. We predict the equilibrium magnetizatio…
The effect of temperature on the magnetic phase separation and the parameters of spin-spiral waves (SSW) is studied using a two-dimensional (2D) single-band $t-t'$ Hubbard model and the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Both commensurate (antiferromagnetic (AF)) and incommensurate (helical) magnetic phases are considered. It is shown that the temperature significantly affects the collinear and helical magnetic phases. With an increase in the temperature, the phase-separation (PS) regions (AF$+[Q,Q])$, $([Q,Q]+[Q,π])$ get substantially reduced but new regions $([Q_{1},π]+[Q_{2},π])$, (AF$+[Q…
SrCo2As2 is a peculiar itinerant magnetic system that does not order magnetically, but inelastic neutron scattering experiments observe the same stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations found in many of the Fe-based superconductors along with evidence of magnetic frustration. Here we present results from neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of Sr(Co1-xNix)2As2 that show the development of long-range AF order with Ni-doping. However, the AF order is not stripe-type. Rather, the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetically-aligned (FM) layers (with moments laying in the…
A unified molecular field theory (MFT) is presented that applies to both collinear and planar noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets (AFs) on the same footing. The spins in the system are assumed to be identical and crystallographically equivalent. This formulation allows calculations of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T below the AF ordering temperature TN to be carried out for arbitrary Heisenberg exchange interactions J{ij} between arbitrary neighbors j of a given spin i without recourse to magnetic sublattices. The Weiss temperature theta_p in the Curie-Wei…
Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structure. The measurements rule out a number of alternative models characterized by 2D electronic order or 1D helical spin order. The low-energy spin excitations are found to be primarily transversely polarized relative to the stripe ordered state, consistent with conventional spin waves.
A recently-developed molecular field theory (MFT) has been used to fit single-crystal magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T data below the respective antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures TN for a variety of collinear and coplanar noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets. The spins in the system are assumed to interact by Heisenberg exchange and to be identical and crystallographically equivalent. The fitting parameters for chi(T) of collinear antiferromagnets are measurable quantities: the Weiss temperature theta_p in the Curie-Weiss law, TN, chi(TN), and the spin S. For coplanar…
We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic compound Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$. The substitution of the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ with nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO$_4$. Only 5 % of Zn substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear (paraelectric) low temperature phase. The helical magnetic and ferroelectric phase develops as the ground state. The multiferroic state is stable up to a high level of substitution of more than 50 %. The magnetic, thermodyn…

The gem-stone dioptase Cu6Si6O18.6H2O has a chiral crystal structure of equilateral triangular helices consisting of Cu-3d spins. It shows an antiferromagnetic order with an easy axis along c at TN = 15.5 K under zero field, and a magnetization jump at HC = 13.5 T when the field is applied along c-axis. By 29Si-NMR measurements, we have revealed that the high-field state is essentially the two sub-lattice structure, and that the component within ab-plane is collinear. The result indicates no apparent match with the geometrical pattern of helical spin chain.
Neutron diffraction on the centrosymmetric square-net magnet EuGa$_2$Al$_2$ reveals multiple incommensurate magnetic states (AFM1,2,3) in zero field. In applied field, a new magnetic phase (A) is identified from magnetization and transport measurements, bounded by two of the $μ_0H$~=~0 incommensurate magnetic phases (AFM1,helical and AFM3, cycloidal) with different moment orientations. Moreover, magneto-transport measurements indicate the presence of a topological Hall effect, with maximum values centered in the A phase. Together, these results render EuGa$_2$Al$_2$ a material with non-coplana…
Here we present a detailed study of the THz and FIR response of the mixed perovskite manganite system Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ for holmium concentrations x = 0.1 and 0.3. We compare the magnetic excitations of the four different magnetically ordered phases (A-type antiferromagnetic, sinusoidally modulated collinear, helical phases with spin planes perpendicular to the crystallographic a and c axes). The transition between the two latter phases goes hand in hand with a switching of the ferroelectric polarization from P||a to P||c. Special emphasis is paid to the temperature dependence of the exc…
We report the magnetic properties of $A$-site spinel compound MnSc$_2$Se$_4$. The macroscopic magnetic measurements uncovers successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm{N1}}$= 2.04 K, followed by two further transitions at $T_{\rm{N2}}$=1.8 K and $T_{\rm{N3}}$=1.6 K. Neutron powder diffraction reveals that both, $T_{\rm{N2}} < T < T_{\rm{N1}}$ and $T <T_{\rm{N3}}$, orders are associated with the propagation vector $k$=(3/4 3/4 0), while the magnetic structures are collinear amplitude modulated and helical, respectively. Using neutron powder spectroscopy we demonstrated the effect of substitutio…
Neutron diffraction and 7Li-NMR have been applied to determine the multiferroic system LiCu2O2, which has four chains (ribbon chains) of edge-sharing CuO4 square planes in a unit cell. We have confirmed that there are successive magnetic transitions at TN1=24.5 K and TN2=22.8 K. In the T region between TN1 and TN2, the quasi one-dimensional spins (S=1/2) of Cu2+ ions within a chain have a collinear and sinusoidally modulated structure with Cu-moments parallel to the c-axis and with the modulation vector along the b-axis. At T < TN2, an ellipsoidal helical spin structure with the incommensurate…
Magnetic materials hosting correlated electrons play an important role for information technology and signal processing. The currently used ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic materials provide microscopic moments (spins) that are mainly collinear. Recently more complex spin structures such as spin helices and cycloids have regained a lot of interest. The interest has been initiated by the discovery of the skyrmion lattice phase in non-centrosymmetric helical magnets. In this review we address how spin helices and skyrmion lattices enrich the microwave characteristics of magnetic materials. W…
Through a combination of neutron diffraction and Landau theory we describe the spin ordering in the ground state of the quadruple perovskite manganite CaMn7O12 - a magnetic multiferroic supporting an incommensurate orbital density wave that onsets above the magnetic ordering temperature, TN1 = 90 K. The multi-k magnetic structure in the ground state was found to be a nearly-constant-moment helix with modulated spin helicity, which oscillates in phase with the orbital occupancies on the Mn3+ sites via trilinear magneto-orbital coupling. Our phenomenological model also shows that, above TN2 = 48…
Low-temperature neutron diffraction and NMR studies of field-induced phases in linarite are presented for magnetic fields $H \parallel b$ axis. A two-step spin-flop transition is observed as well as a transition transforming a helical magnetic ground state into an unusual magnetic phase with sine-wave modulated moments $\parallel H$. An effective $\tilde{J}_1$-$\tilde{J}_2$ single-chain model with a magnetization-dependent frustration ratio $α_{\rm eff} = -\tilde{J}_2/\tilde{J}_1$ is proposed. The latter is governed by skew interchain couplings and shifted to the vicinity of the ferromagnetic …
Fe$_{1+x}$Te is a two dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet that becomes superconducting on anion substitution on the Te site. The parent phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te is sensitive to the amount of interstitial iron situated between the iron-tellurium layers displaying collinear magnetic order coexisting with low temperature metallic resistivity for small concentrations of interstitial iron $x$ and helical magnetic order for large values of $x$. While this phase diagram has been established through scattering [see for example E. E. Rodriguez $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. B ${\bf{84}}$, 064403 (2011…
Using the coupled cluster method we study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF), the so-called $J_{1}$--$J_{2}'$ model, defined on an anisotropic 2D lattice. With respect to an underlying square-lattice geometry the model contains antiferromagnetic ($J_{1} > 0$) bonds between nearest neighbors and competing ($J_{2}'>0$) bonds between next-nearest neighbors across only one of the diagonals of each square plaquette, the same diagonal in every square. Considered on an equivalent triangular-lattice geometry the model may be regarded as having two sorts …
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…
Magnons, the spin-wave quanta, are disturbances that embody a wave propagating through a background medium formed by ordered magnetic moments. In an isotropic Heisenberg system, these disturbances vary in a continuous manner around an ordered spin structure, thus requiring infinitesimal energy as a wavevector approaches a magnetic zone centre. However, competing anisotropic interactions arising from broken symmetry can favour a distinct static and dynamic spin state causing a shift of the minimum point of the magnon dispersion to a nonreciprocal wavevector. Here we report the first direct evid…
Knowledge of magnetic symmetry is vital for exploiting nontrivial surface states of magnetic topological materials. EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an excellent example, as it is predicted to have collinear antiferromagnetic order where the magnetic moment direction determines either a topological-crystalline-insulator phase supporting axion electrodynamics or a higher-order-topological-insulator phase with chiral hinge states. Here, we use neutron diffraction, symmetry analysis, and density functional theory results to demonstrate that EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ actually exhibits low-symmetry helical antiferro…
Ac current-driven motions of spiral spin textures can give rise to emergent electric fields acting on conduction electrons. This in turn leads to the emergent electromagnetic induction effect which may realize quantum inductor elements of micrometer size. ${\rm YMn}_{6}{\rm Sn}_{6}$ is a helimagnet with a short helical period (2-3 nm) that shows this type of emergent inductance beyond room temperature. To identify the optimized materials conditions for ${\rm YMn}_{6}{\rm Sn}_{6}$-type room-temperature emergent inductors, we have investigated emergent electromagnetic inductance (EEMI) as the ma…

The discovery of multiferroic behavior in monolayer NiI$_2$ provides a new symmetry-broken state in van der Waals monolayers, featuring the simultaneous emergence of helimagnetic order and ferroelectric order at a critical temperature of $T=21$ K. However, the microscopic origin of multiferroic order in NiI$_2$ monolayer has not been established, and in particular, the role of non-colinear magnetism and spin-orbit coupling in this compound remains an open problem. Here we reveal the origin of the two-dimensional multiferroicity in NiI$_2$ using first-principles electronic structure methods. We…

High-field magnetization of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ was measured in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 56 T in order to study its magnetic phase diagram. When the field was applied along the easy axis (the $a$-axis), two distinct transitions were observed at $H_{c1}=6.5$~T and $H_{c2}=18.0$~T. The former is a spin-flop transition typical for a collinear antiferromagnet and the latter is believed to be a spin-flip transition of canted moments. The canted moments, which are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, anti-align for $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$ due to the ani…
Two$-$dimensional (2D) triangular lattices antiferromagnets (2D$-$TLA) often manifest intriguing physical and technological properties, due to the strong interplay between lattice geometry and electronic properties. The recently synthesized 2$-$dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide LiCrTe$_2$, being a 2D$-$TLA, enriched the range of materials which can present such properties. In this work, muon spin rotation ($μ^+$SR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been utilized to reveal the true magnetic nature and ground state of LiCrTe$_2$. From high$-$resolution NPD the magnetic spin ord…
Using a simple model of a frustrated helimagnet, the critical behavior is numerically investigated for planar or isotropic spins, and for cases of one or two chiral order parameters. The helical structure in this model arises from the competition between exchange interactions of spins of the first two range orders in one direction (in both directions) of a square lattice. The main result is that the critical and temperature behavior is primarily determined by topological defects that are present in all cases. In the case of planar spins, vortices, fractional vortices and domain walls are prese…
