We consider the general framework of perturbative quantum field theory for the pure Yang-Mills model. We give a more precise version of the Wick theorem using Hopf algebra notations for chronological products and not for Feynman graphs. Next we prove that Wick expansion property can be preserved for all cases in order $ n = 2. $ However, gauge invariance is broken for chronological products of Wick submonomials.
A combinatorial formula of G.-C. Rota and J.A. Stein is taken to perform Wick re-ordering in quantum field theory. Wick's theorem becomes a Hopf algebraic identity called Cliffordization. The combinatorial method relying on Hopf algebras is highly efficient in computations and yields closed algebraic expressions. AMS Subject Classifications 2000: 81R50; 16W30
Wick's theorem in the Schwinger-Perel-Keldysh closed-time-loop formalism is written in a form where the place of contractions is taken by the linear response function of the field. This result demonstrates that the physical information supplied by Wick's theorem for operators is propagation of the free field in space and time.
The operator valued distributions which arise in quantum field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski space can be symbolized by a generalization of chord diagrams, the dotted chord diagrams. In this framework, the combinatorial aspects of quasiplanar Wick products are understood in terms of the shuffle Hopf algebra of dotted chord diagrams, leading to an algebraic characterization of quasiplanar Wick products as a convolution. Moreover, it is shown that the distributions do not provide a weight system for universal knot invariants.
The Moyal and Wick-Voros planes A^{M,V}_θ are *-isomorphic. On each of these planes the Poincaré group acts as a Hopf algebra symmetry if its coproducts are deformed by twist factors. We show that the *-isomorphism T: A^M_θ to A^V_θ does not also map the corresponding twists of the Poincaré group algebra. The quantum field theories on these planes with twisted Poincaré-Hopf symmetries are thus inequivalent. We explicitly verify this result by showing that a non-trivial dependence on the non-commutative parameter is present for the Wick-Voros plane in a self-energy diagram whereas it is known t…
In quantum mechanics the deterministic property of classical physics is an emergent phenomenon appropriate only on macroscopic scales. Lee and Wick introduced Lorentz invariant quantum theories where causality is an emergent phenomenon appropriate for macroscopic time scales. In this paper we analyze a Lee-Wick version of the O(N) model. We argue that in the large N limit this theory has a unitary and Lorentz invariant S matrix and is therefore free of paradoxes in scattering experiments. We discuss some of its acausal properties.
Functors from (co)operads to bialgebras relate Hopf algebras that occur in renormalisation to operads, which simplifies the proof of the Hopf algebra axioms, and induces a characterisation of the corresponding group of characters and Lie algebra of primitives of the dual in terms of the operad. In addition, it is shown that the Wick rotation formula leads to canonical algebras for one of these operads.
Topological solitons are relevant in several areas of physics [1]. Recently, these configurations have been investigated in contexts as diverse as hydrodynamics [2], Bose-Einstein condensates [3], ferromagnetism [4], knotted light [5] and non-abelian gauge theories [6]. In this paper we address the issue of wave propagation about a static Hopf soliton in the context of the Nicole model. Working within the geometrical optics limit we show that several nontrivial lensing effects emerge due to nonlinear interactions as long as the theory remains hyperbolic. We conclude that similar effects are ve…
We consider the holographic prescription problem in a (Lorentzian) AdS background, deriving from first principles the explicit formulas that relate the field at infinity with the field in the bulk. In contrast with the previous studies of the "real-time" holography problem, our derivation uses purely classical arguments that involve causality, as in the usual treatment of the holographic prescription problem in Wick-rotated spaces of Euclidean signature. We show that there is a unique propagator that preserves causality and see that this provides a simple picture of the relationship between th…
The paper aims at investigating perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT) in the approach of Epstein and Glaser (EG) and, in particular, its formulation in the language of graphs and Hopf algebras (HAs). Various HAs are encountered, each one associated with a special combination of physical concepts such as normalization, localization, pseudo-unitarity, causality and an associated regularization, and renormalization. The algebraic structures, representing the perturbative expansion of the S-matrix, are imposed on the operator-valued distributions which are equipped with appropriate graph indice…
We investigate noncommutative deformations of quantum field theories for different star products, particularly emphasizing the locality properties and the regularity of the deformed fields. Using functional analysis methods, we describe the basic structural features of the vacuum expectation values of star-modified products of fields and field commutators. As an alternative to microcausality, we introduce a notion of $θ$-locality, where $θ$ is the noncommutativity parameter. We also analyze the conditions for the convergence and continuity of star products and define the function algebra that …
Starting with the well-defined product of quantum fields at two spacetime points, we explore an associated Poisson structure for classical field theories within the deformation quantization formalism. We realize that the induced star-product is naturally related to the standard Moyal product through an appropriate causal Green's functions connecting points in the space of classical solutions to the equations of motion. Our results resemble the Peierls-DeWitt bracket analyzed in the multisymplectic context. Once our star-product is defined we are able to apply the Wigner-Weyl map in order to in…

The quantum field algebra of real scalar fields is shown to be an example of infinite dimensional quantum group. The underlying Hopf algebra is the symmetric algebra S(V) and the product is Wick's normal product. Two coquasitriangular structures can be built from the two-point function and the Feynman propagator of scalar fields to reproduce the operator product and the time-ordered product as twist deformations of the normal product. A correspondence is established between the quantum group and the quantum field concepts. On the mathematical side the underlying structures come out of Hopf alg…
We consider unitarity and causality in a higher-derivative theory of infinite order, where propagators fall off more quickly in the ultraviolet due to the presence of a transcendental entire function of the momentum. Like Lee-Wick theories, these field theories might provide new avenues for addressing the hierarchy problem; unlike Lee-Wick theories, tree-level propagators do not have additional poles corresponding to unobserved particles with unusual properties. We consider microscopic acausality in these nonlocal theories. The acausal ordering of production and decay vertices for ordinary res…
The Wick rotation provides the standard technique of computing Feynman diagrams by means of Euclidean propagators. Let us suppose that quantum fields in an interaction zone are really Euclidean. In contrast with the well-known Euclidean field theory dealing with the Wightman and Schwinger functions of free quantum fields, we address complete Green's functions of interacting fields, i.e., causal forms on the Borchers algebra of quantum fields. They are the Laplace transform of the Euclidean states obeying a certain condition. If Euclidean states of a quantum field system, e.g., quarks do not sa…
Since the Connes--Kreimer Hopf algebra was proposed, revisiting present quantum field theory has become meaningful and important from algebraic points. In this paper, the Hopf algebra in the cutting rules is constructed. Its coproduct contains all necessary ingredients for the cutting equation crucial to proving perturbative unitarity of the S-matrix. Its antipode is compatible with the causality principle. It is obtained by reducing the Hopf algebra in the largest time equation which reflects partitions of the vertex set of a given Feynman diagram. First of all, the Connes--Kreimer Hopf algeb…
Resumming quantum fluctuations at the level of the gravitational path integral is expected to result in non-local effective actions and thus in a non-trivial momentum dependence of the propagator. Which properties the (dressed) graviton propagator has to satisfy and whether they can all be met are key open questions. In this work we present criteria and conditions for the momentum dependence of a graviton propagator which is consistent with unitarity, causality, and stability in a non-perturbative setting. To this end, we revisit several aspects of these conditions, highlighting some caveats a…
In the framework of the algebraic formulation, we discuss and analyse some new features of the local structure of a real scalar quantum field theory in a strongly causal spacetime. In particular we use the properties of the exponential map to set up a local version of a bulk-to-boundary correspondence. The bulk is a suitable subset of a geodesic neighbourhood of any but fixed point p of the underlying background, while the boundary is a part of the future light cone having p as its own tip. In this regime, we provide a novel notion for the extended *-algebra of Wick polynomials on the said con…
We discuss the algebraic quantization of a real, massive scalar field in the Poincaré patch of the (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, with arbitrary boundary conditions. By using the functional formalism, we show that it is always possible to associate to such system an algebra of observables enjoying the standard properties of causality, time-slice axiom and F-locality. In addition, we characterize the wavefront set of the ground state associated to the system under investigation. As a consequence, we are able to generalize the definition of Hadamard states and construct a global alg…
Some basic topics in the light-front (LF) quantization of relativistic field theory are reviewed. It is argued that the LF quantization is equally appropriate as the conventional one and that they lead, assuming the micro- causality principle, to the same physical content. This is confirmed in the studies on the LF of the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), of the degenerate vacua in Schwinger model (SM) and Chiral SM (CSM), of the chiral boson theory, and of the QCD in covariant gauges among others. The discussion on the LF is more economical and more transparent. In the context of the Dyson…
In this work we present the study of light-front field theories in the realm of axiomatic theory. It is known that when one uses the light-cone gauge pathological poles $(k^{+}) ^{-n}$ arises, demanding a prescription to be employed in order to tame these ill-defined poles and to have correct Feynman integrals due to the lack of Wick rotation in such theories. In order to shed a new light on this long standing problem we present here a discussion based on the use rigorous mathematical machinery of distributions combined with physical concepts, such as causality, to show how to deal with these …
A well-defined regularized path integral for Lorentzian quantum gravity in three and four dimensions is constructed, given in terms of a sum over dynamically triangulated causal space-times. Each Lorentzian geometry and its associated action have a unique Wick rotation to the Euclidean sector. All space-time histories possess a distinguished notion of a discrete proper time. For finite lattice volume, the associated transfer matrix is self-adjoint and bounded. The reflection positivity of the model ensures the existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian. The degenerate geometric phases found previ…
In these lecture notes, I describe the motivation behind a recent formulation of a non-perturbative gravitational path integral for Lorentzian (instead of the usual Euclidean) space-times, and give a pedagogical introduction to its main features. At the regularized, discrete level this approach solves the problems of (i) having a well-defined Wick rotation, (ii) possessing a coordinate-invariant cutoff, and (iii) leading to_convergent_ sums over geometries. Although little is known as yet about the existence and nature of an underlying continuum theory of quantum gravity in four dimensions, th…
Causal perturbative renormalization within the recursive Epstein-Glaser scheme involves extending, at each order, time-ordered operator-valued distributions to coinciding points. This is achieved by a generalized Taylor subtraction on test functions, which is transposed to distributions. We show how the Epstein-Glaser recursive construction can, by means of a slight modification of the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs, be recast in terms of the new Connes-Kreimer algebraic setup for renormalization. This is illustrated for $ϕ^4_4$-theory.
In the present work we review the twisted field construction of quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetimes based on twisted Poincaré invariance. We present the latest development in the field, in particular the notion of equivalence of such quantum field theories on a noncommutative spacetime, in this regard we work out explicitly the inequivalence between twisted quantum field theories on Moyal and Wick-Voros planes; the duality between deformations of the multiplication map on the algebra of functions on spacetime $\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ and coproduct deformations of the Poincaré-…
A key insight used in developing the theory of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDTs) is to use the causal (or light-cone) structure of Lorentzian manifolds to restrict the class of geometries appearing in the Quantum Gravity (QG) path integral. By exploiting this structure the models developed in CDTs differ from the analogous models developed in the Euclidean domain, models of (Euclidean) Dynamical Triangulations (DT), and the corresponding Lorentzian results are in many ways more "physical". In this paper we use this insight to formulate a Lorentzian signature model that is analogous to the…
