Understanding impacts of phase transition, phase coexistence, and surface magnetism on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a magnetic system is essential to manipulate the spin to charge current conversion efficiency for spincaloritronic applications. We aim to elucidate these effects by performing a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of LSSE in biphase iron oxide (BPIO = alpha-Fe2O3 + Fe3O4) thin films grown on Si (100) and Al2O3 (111) substrates. A combination of temperature-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and electrical resistivity measurements show that the contribution of ANE from the BPIO layer is negligible compared to the intrinsic LSSE in the Si/BPIO/Pt heterostructure even at room temperature. Below the Verwey transition of the Fe3O4 phase, the total signal across BPIO/Pt is dominated by the LSSE. Noticeable changes in the intrinsic LSSE signal for both Si/BPIO/Pt and Al2O3/BPIO/Pt heterostructures around the Verwey transition of the Fe3O4 phase and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Morin transition of the alpha-Fe2O3 phase are observed. The LSSE signal for Si/BPIO/Pt is found to be almost two times greater than that for Al2O3/BPIO/Pt, an opposite trend is observed for the saturation magnetization though. Magnetic force microscopy reveals the higher density of surface magnetic moments of the Si/BPIO film compared to the Al2O3/BPIO film, which underscores a dominant role of interfacial magnetism on the LSSE signal and thereby explains the larger LSSE for Si/BPIO/Pt.
The realization of multiferroicity in 2D nanomaterials is crucially important for designing advanced nanoelectronic devices such as non-volatile multistate data storage. In this work, the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is reported in monolayer SnTe system by transition metal (TM) doping. Based on first-principles calculations, the spontaneous spin polarization could be realized by TM doping in ferroelectric SnTe monolayer. In addition to in-plane ferroelectric polarization, the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization emerges in Mn (Fe)-doped SnTe monolayer due to the intern…
How magnetism affects the Seebeck effect is an important issue widely concerned in the thermoelectric community yet remaining elusive. Based on a thermodynamic analysis of spin degrees of freedom on varied $d$-electron based ferro- and anti-ferromagnets, we demonstrate that in itinerant or partially itinerant magnetic compounds there exists a generic spin contribution to the Seebeck effect over an extended temperature range from slightly below to well above the magnetic transition temperature. This contribution is interpreted as resulting from transport spin entropy of (partially) delocalized …
In order to investigate whether magnetism and superconductivity coexist in Co-doped SrFe$_2$As$_2$, we have prepared single crystals of SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$, $x$ = 0 and 0.4, and characterized them via X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity in zero and applied field up to 9 T as well as at ambient and applied pressure up to 1.6 GPa, and magnetic susceptibility. At $x$ = 0.4, there is both magnetic and resistive evidence for a spin density wave transition at 120 K, while $T_c$ = 19.5 K - indicating coexistent magnetism and superconductivity. A discussion of how these results compare with…
First principles calculations based on the density functional theory within the local spin density approximation plus U(LSDA+U)scheme, show rhombohedral Bi$_2$FeTiO$_6$ is a potential multiferroic in which the magnetism and ferroelectricity coexist . A ferromagnetic configuration with magnetic moment of 4 $μ_B$ per formula unit have been reported with respect to the minimum total energy. Spontaneous polarization of 27.3 $μ$ C/cm$^2$, caused mainly by the ferroelectric distortions of Ti, was evaluated using the berry phase approach in the modern theory of polarization. The Bi-6s stereochemical …
The experimental unexpected large Seebeck coefficient in SrTiO3 (STO) cannot be reproduced theoretically by the conventional Bloch-Boltzmann transport with electron-phonon coupling calculated perturbatively, indicating a failure of Fermi liquid picture in STO and ill-treatment of polaronic states. Starting from many-body interaction picture, the polaronic states can be precisely described by the method of cumulant expansion of retarded Green's function. By applying Kubo-Greenwood method, we found that the mysterious Seebeck coefficient can be fully described by a combination of polarons and Fe…
Recent discovery of oxypnictide superconductor LaFeAs(O,F) (LFAO-F) with the critical temperature (Tc) of 26 K and succeeding revelation of much increased Tc upon substitution of La for other rare earth elements (such as Sm, leading to ~43 K) and application of pressure for LFAO-F (~ 43 K) has triggered broad interest in the mechanism yielding relatively high Tc in this new class of compounds. While they share a feature with high-Tc cuprates that superconductivity occurs upon carrier doping to pristine compound which exhibits magnetism, they also resemble the heavy-fermion compounds in the sen…
Investigating exotic magnetic materials with spintronic techniques is effective at advancing magnetism as well as spintronics. In this work, we report unusual field-induced suppression of the spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in a quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnet LiCuVO$_4$, known to exhibit spin-nematic correlation in a wide range of external magnetic field $B$. The suppression takes place above $|B| > 2$ T in spite of the $B$-linear isothermal magnetization curves in the same $B$ range. The result can be attributed to the growth of the spin-nematic correlation while increas…
We report on a density functional theory study demonstrating the coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and antiferroelectricity in boron-deficient MgB6. A boron vacancy produces an almost one dimensional extended molecular orbital, which is responsible for the magnetic moment formation. Then, long-range magnetic order can emerge from the overlap of such orbitals above percolation threshold. Although there is a finite density of states at the Fermi level, the localized nature of the charge density causes an inefficient electron screening. We find that the Mg ions can displace from the center of th…
Single crystals of the single Kagome layer compound FeSn are investigated using x-ray and neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, Hall, Seebeck, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity measurements and density functional theory (DFT). FeSn is a planar antiferromagnet below TN = 365 K and exhibits ferromagnetic magnetic order within each Kagome layer. The in-plane magnetic susceptibility is sensitive to synthesis conditions. Resistivity, Hall and Seebeck results indicate multiple bands near the Fermi energy. The resistivity of FeSn is about 3 t…
Surface magnetism and its correlation with the electronic structure are critical to understand the gapless topological surface state in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, using static and time resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find a significant ARPES intensity change together with a gap opening on a Rashba-like conduction band. Comparison with a model simulation strongly indicates that the surface magnetism on cleaved MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the same as its bulk state. The coexistence of surface ferromagnetism and a gapless TSS uncovers t…
Understanding the transfer of spin angular momentum is essential in modern magnetism research. A model case is the generation of magnons in magnetic insulators by heating an adjacent metal film. Here, we reveal the initial steps of this spin Seebeck effect with <27fs time resolution using terahertz spectroscopy on bilayers of ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet and platinum. Upon exciting the metal with an infrared laser pulse, a spin Seebeck current $j_\textrm{s}$ arises on the same ~100fs time scale on which the metal electrons thermalize. This observation highlights that efficient spin transf…
RuGe, a diamagnetic small-band gap semiconductor, and CoGe, a nonmagnetic semimetal, are both isostructural to the Kondo insulator FeSi and the skyrmion lattice host MnSi. Here, we have explored the magnetic and transport properties of Co-doped RuGe: Ru$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge. For small values of $x$, a magnetic ground state emerges with $T_{c}\approx$ 5 $-$ 9 K, which is accompanied by a moderate decrease in electrical resistivity and a Seebeck coefficient that indicates electron-like charge carriers. The magnetization, magnetoresistance, and the specific heat capacity all resemble that of Fe$_{1-x}…
It has been a long-standing goal to create magnetism in a nonmagnetic material by manipulating its structure at the nanometer scale. This idea may be realized in graphitic carbon: evidence suggests magnetic states at the edges of graphene ribbons and at grain boundaries in graphite. Such phenomena have long been regarded as unlikely in silicon because there is no graphitic bulk phase. Here we show theoretically that intrinsic magnetism indeed exists in a class of silicon surfaces whose step edges have a nanoscale graphitic structure. This magnetism is intimately connected to recent observation…
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) MnBi2Te4 and MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n are expected to realize the high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and dissipationless electrical transport. Extensive efforts have been made on this field but there is still lack of ideal MTI candidate with magnetic ordering of ferromagnetic (FM) ground state. Here, we demonstrate a MTI sample of Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te7 which holds the coexistence of FM ground state and topological non-triviality. The dramatic modulation of the magnetism is induced by a charge carrier engineering process by the way of S…
Using a combination of Density Functional Theory, mean-field analysis and exact diagonalization calculations we reveal the emergence of a dimerized charge ordered state in TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ organic crystal. The interplay between charge and spin order leads to a rich phase diagram. Coexistence of charge ordering with a structural dimerization results in a ferroelectric phase, which has been observed experimentally. The tendency to the dimerization is magnetically driven revealing TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ as a multiferroic material.
Two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures have opened up new possibilities for magnetism at the nanoscale. In this study, we utilize first-principles simulations to investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of $\textrm{Fe}/\textrm{WSe}_2/\textrm{Pt}$ systems containing pristine, defective, or doped $\textrm{WSe}_2$ monolayers. The proximity effects of the ferromagnetic Fe layer are studied by considering defective and vanadium-doped $\textrm{WSe}_2$ monolayers. All heterostructures are found to be ferromagnetic, and the insertion of the transition-metal dichalc…
We study the coexistence of strain- and charge-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in a cobalt (0-7 nm) wedge on ferroelectric [Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$/Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$]$_{0.68}$-[PbTiO$_{3}$]$_{0.32}$ (011) using surface-sensitive x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co L$_{3,2}$ edges. Three distinct electric field driven remanent magnetization states can be set in the Co film at room temperature. Ab-initio density functional theory calculations unravel the relative contributions of both strain and charge to the observed magnetic anisotropy changes illustrating magnetoelectro-elastic …

Edge states in narrow quasi two-dimensional nanostructures determine, to a large extent, their electric, thermoelectric and magnetic properties. Non-magnetic edge states may quite often lead to topological insulator type behavior. However another scenario develops when the zigzag edges are magnetic and the time reversal symmetry is broken. In this work we report on the electronic band structure modifications, electrical conductance and thermoelectric properties of narrow zigzag nanoribbons with spontaneously magnetized edges. Theoretical studies based on the Kane-Mele- Hubbard tight-binding mo…
We measured the chemical and magnetic depth profiles of a single crystalline (La$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_{1-y}$Ca$_y$MnO$_{3-δ}$ (x = 0.52\pm0.05, y = 0.23\pm0.04, δ = 0.14\pm0.10) film grown on a NdGaO3 substrate using x-ray reflectometry, electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. Our data indicate that the film exhibits coexistence of different magnetic phases as a function of depth. The magnetic depth profile is correlated with a variation of chemical composition with depth. The thermal hysteresis of ferromagnetic order in the film suggests a first …

Femtosecond (fs)-resolved simultaneous measurements of charge and spin dynamics reveal the coexistence of two different quasi-particle excitations in colossal magneto-resistive (CMR) manganites, with {\em fs} and {\em ps} relaxation times respectively. Their populations reverse size above a {\em photoexcitation-intensity-threshold} coinciding with a "sudden" antiferro-to-ferromagnetic switching during $<$100 fs laser pulses. We present evidence that fast, metallic, mobile quasi--electrons dressed by {\em quantum spin fluctuations} coexist with slow, localized, polaronic charge carriers in non-…
Highly ordered Bi2FeMnO6 epitaxial thin films have been successfully grown on SrTiO3 substrate. Both synchrotron X-ray reciprocal space mapping and high resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the alternative alignment of Fe and Mn along [111] direction of Bi2FeMnO6 films. Magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Bi2FeMnO6 films are characterized and analyzed. The room-temperature ferroelectricity is well kept in Bi2FeMnO6 film as expected. However, it is very interesting that Bi2FeMnO6 film exhibits a typical spin-glass behavior and very weak magnetism rather than a ferri/ferrom…
Multiferroics - materials which are simultaneously (ferro)magnetic and ferroelectric, and often also ferroelastic, attract now considerable attention, both because of the interesting physics involved and as they promise important practical applications. In this paper I give a survey of microscopic factors determining the coexistence of these properties, and discuss different possible routes to combine them in one material. In particular the role of the occupation of d-states in transition metal perovskites is discussed, possible role of spiral magnetic structures is stressed and the novel mech…
Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science[1-9]. However, the coexistence of magnetism and conventional ferroelectricity is physically unfavoured[10]. Recently several remedies have been proposed, e.g., improper ferroelectricity induced by specific magnetic[6] or charge orders[2]. Guiding by these theories, currently most research is focused on frustrated magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic ordering temperature, consequently far from the practical appli…
Atomically engineered oxide heterostructures provide a fertile ground for creating novel states. For example, a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between two oxide insulators, giant thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient, emergent ferromagnetism from otherwise nonmagnetic components, and colossal ionic conductivity. Extensive research efforts reveal that oxygen deficiency or lattice strain play an important role in determining these unexpected properties. Herein, by studying the abrupt presence of robust ferromagnetism (up to 1.5 uB/Mn) in LaMnO3-based heterostructures, we find the mul…
The efficient coupling between lattice degrees of freedom and spin degrees of freedom in magnetic materials can be used for refrigeration and energy conversion. This coupling is enhanced in materials exhibiting the giant magnetocaloric effect. First principle electronic structure calculations on hexagonal MnFe(P, Si) reveal a new form of magnetism: the coexistence of strong and weak magnetism in alternate atomic layers. The weak magnetism of Fe layers (disappearance of local magnetic moments at the Curie temperature) is responsible for a strong coupling with the crystal lattice while the stron…
Controlling magnetism and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials by purely electrical means is crucial and highly sought for high-efficiency spintronics devices since electric field can be easily applied locally compared with magnetic field. The recently discover 2D Janus crystals has provide a new platform for nanoscale electronics and spintronics due to their broken inversion symmetry nature. The intrinsic ferromagnetic Jauns monolayer, and hence the tunable physical properties, is therefore of great interest. Here, through comprehensive density functional theory calculation…
We have studied NpPdSn by means of the heat capacity, electrical resistivity, Seebeck and Hall effect, $^{237}$Np Mössbauer spectroscopy, and neutron diffraction measurements in the temperature range 2-300 K and under magnetic fields up to 14 T. NpPdSn orders antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 19 K and shows localized magnetism of Np$^{3+}$ ion with a a doubly degenerate ground state. In the magnetic state the electrical resistivity and heat capacity are characterized by electron-magnon scattering with spin-waves spectrum typical of anisotropic antiferromagnets. An enhanc…
The realization of magnetic frustration in a metallic van der Waals (vdW) coupled material has been sought as a promising platform to explore novel phenomena both in bulk matter and in exfoliated devices. However, a suitable material platform has been lacking so far. Here, we demonstrate that CeSiI hosts itinerant electrons coexisting with exotic magnetism. In CeSiI, the magnetic cerium atoms form a triangular bilayer structure sandwiched by van der Waals stacked iodine layers. From resistivity and magnetometry measurements, we confirm the coexistence of itinerant electrons with magnetism with…
Designing two-dimensional (2D) materials with magnetic and topological properties has continuously attracted intense interest in fundamental science and potential applications. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, we predict the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and Dirac nodal loop (NL) in the monolayer MnB, where the band crossing points are very close to the Fermi Level. Remarkably, a moderate strain can induce an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition, driving the monolayer MnB to a ferromagnetic metal with Weyl NLs. Such a type of topological quantum phase tra…
Electric field control of magnetism is the key to many next generation spintronics applications1. Ferroelectric control of spin polarization2,3 followed by the electrically driven repeatable magnetization reversal in the absence of applied magnetic field4 have proven to be the milestones in this direction. This article propose how these phenomena could be utilized in a reverse manner to gain control over magnetization even in the absence of electric field. In turn, coexistence of positive5 as well as negative6 magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is attained in tri-layered PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3-CoFe2O4-PbZr…
The discovery of an ever increasing family of atomic layered magnetic materials, together with the already established vast catalogue of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and topological systems, calls for some guiding principles to tailor and optimize novel spin transport and optical properties at their interfaces. Here we focus on the latest developments in both fields that have brought them closer together and make them ripe for future fruitful synergy. After outlining fundamentals on van der Waals (vdW) magnetism and SOC effects, we discuss how their coexistence, manipulation and competitio…
The structure, magnetism, magnetic compensation behavior, exchange interaction and electronic structures of Co50-xMn25Ga25+x and Co50-xMn25+xGa25 (x=0-25) alloys have been systematically investigated by both experiments and first-principles calculations. We found that all the samples exhibited body centered cubic structures with a high degree of atomic ordering. With increasing Ga content, the composition dependence of lattice parameters shows a kink point at the middle composition in Co50-xMn25Ga25+x alloys, which can be attributed to the enhanced covalent effect between the Ga and the transi…
Results of the first principles study on the electronic structure and magnetism of the superconducting weak ferromagnet Y$_4$Co$_3$, are presented. Using the full potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) method, densities of states, dispersion curves and magnetic moments were calculated for quasi-ordered structural model of the compound in the framework of the local density approximation. Spin-polarized KKR calculations confirm that weak ferromagnetic properties of Y$_4$Co$_3$ can be attributed to only one cobalt atom located on (2b) site in the unit cell, while other twenty Co and Y atoms ac…
We report cooperative magnetic orderings in a 6H-perovskite multiferroic system, Ba3HoRu2O9, via comprehensive neutron powder diffraction measurements. This system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at TN1 ~ 50 K with a propagation wave vector of K1 = (0.5 0 0), a transition temperature much higher than the previously reported one at ~10 K (TN2). Both Ru and Ho-moments order simultaneously below TN1, followed by spin-reorientations at lower temperatures, demonstrating strong Ru(4d)-Ho(4f) magnetic correlation. Below TN1 another magnetic phase with a propagation wave vector K2 = (0…
First principles calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method including intra-atomic noncollinear magnetism have been performed to determine the magnetic structures of RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$. The magnetism clearly arises from the RuO$_{6}$ octahedra where the moments on neighboring Ru sites order antiferromagnetically but cant perpendicular to the AFM axis - and so induce a weak ferromagnetism. The projected Ru moments along the AFM and FM axes result in magnetic moments of 1.16 and 0.99 $μ_{B}$ respectively. The results are consistent with the poss…
Magnetic topological quantum materials have attracted great attention due to their exotic topological quantum physics induced by the interplay among crystalology, magnetism, and topology, which is of profound importance to fundamental research and technology applications. However, limited materials are experimentally available, most of whom are realized by magnetic impurity doping or heterostructural constructions. In this work, based on the first-principles calculations, we predict that double perovskite Ba2CdReO6 is an intrinsic ferromagnetic topological semi-half-metal, while the ferrimagne…
We review the reasons that make superconductivity unlikely to arise in a ferromagnet. Then, in light of the report by Tallon and collaborators that RuSr2GdCu2O8 becomes superconducting at approximately 35 K which is well below the Curie temperature of 132 K, we consider whether the objections really apply to this compound. Our considerations are supported by local spin density calculations for this compound, which indeed indicate a ferromagnetic RuO2 layer. The Ru moment resides in t_2g orbitals but is characteristic of itinerant magnetism (and is sensitive to choice of exchange-correlation po…
While tremendous success has been achieved to date in creating both single phase and composite magnetoelectric materials, the quintessential electric-field control of magnetism remains elusive. In this work, we demonstrate a linear magnetoelectric effect which arises from a novel carrier-mediated mechanism, and is a universal feature of the interface between a dielectric and a spin-polarized metal. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we illustrate this effect at the SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface and describe its origin. To formally quantify the magnetic response of such an …
ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS-family, LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanide rare earth) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln. Here we report the single crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored LnSbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known LnSbTe, but exhibits distinct enhanced …

Within the broad class of multiferroics (compounds showing a coexistence of magnetism and ferroelectricity), we focus on the subclass of "improper electronic ferroelectrics", i.e. correlated materials where electronic degrees of freedom (such as spin, charge or orbital) drive ferroelectricity. In particular, in spin-induced ferroelectrics, there is not only a {\em coexistence} of the two intriguing magnetic and dipolar orders; rather, there is such an intimate link that one drives the other, suggesting a giant magnetoelectric coupling. Via first-principles approaches based on density functiona…
Although the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the iron pnictides is still under debate, it is widely believed that magnetic interactions or fluctuations play an important role in triggering Cooper pairing. Because of the relevance of magnetism to pairing, the question of whether long range spin magnetic order can coexist with superconductivity microscopically has attracted strong interests. The available experimental methods used to answer this question are either bulk probes or local ones without control of probing position, thus the answers range from mutual exclusion to homog…
Void defect is a possible origin of ferromagnetic like feature of pure carbon material. Applying density functional theory to void defect induced graphene nano ribbon (GNR), a detailed relationship between multiple spin state and structure change was studied. An equitorial triangle of an initial initial void having six electrons is distorted to isosceles triangle by rebonding carbon atoms. Among possible spin states, the most stable state was Sz=2/2. The case of Sz=4/2 is remarkable that initial flat ribbon turned to three dimentional curled one having highly polarized spin configuration at ri…
We show that short-range resonating-valence-bond correlations and long-range order can coexist in the ground state (GS) of a frustrated spin system. Our study comprises a comprehensive investigation of the quantum magnetism on the structurally disorder-free single crystal of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$, which realizes the $s$ = 1/2 Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice. Competing exchange interactions determined by fitting the magnetization measured up to 55 T give rise to an exotic GS wavefunction with coexistence of the dominant short-range resonating-valence-bond correlati…
Polycrystalline members of the GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ family of materials with small levels of substitution between $0 \leq y \leq 0.5$ and $7.5 \leq y\leq 8$ have been synthesized in order to investigate their magnetic and structural properties. Substitutions to the skyrmion hosting parent compounds GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, are found to suppress the temperature of the cubic to rhombohedral structural phase transition that occurs in both end compounds and to create a temperature region around the transition where there is a coexistence of these two phases. Similarly, the magnitude of th…
