Variational quantum algorithms are a promising class of algorithms that can be performed on currently available quantum computers. In most settings, the free parameters of a variational circuit are optimized using a classical optimizer that updates parameters in Euclidean geometry. Since quantum circuits are elements of the special unitary group, we can consider an alternative optimization perspective that depends on the structure of this group. In this work, we investigate a Riemannian optimization scheme over the special unitary group and we discuss its implementation on a quantum computer. We illustrate that the resulting Riemannian gradient-flow algorithm has favorable optimization properties for deep circuits and that an approximate version of this algorithm can be performed on near-term hardware.
Number theory is an abstract mathematical field that has found a fertile environment for development in theoretical physics. In particular, several physical systems were related to the zeros of the Riemann-zeta function. In this work we present the theory of a quantum circuit related to a finite number of zeros of the Riemann-zeta function. The existence of such circuit will permit in the future the solution of some number theory problems through the realization of quantum algorithms based on those zeros.

In recent years, parameterized quantum circuits have become a major tool to design quantum algorithms for optimization problems. The challenge in fully taking advantage of a given family of parameterized circuits lies in finding a good set of parameters in a non-convex landscape that can grow exponentially to the number of parameters. We introduce a new framework for optimizing parameterized quantum circuits: round SDP solutions to circuit parameters. Within this framework, we propose an algorithm that produces approximate solutions for a quantum optimization problem called Quantum Max Cut. Th…
In this work, we introduce a new circuit optimization technique to reduce the number of T gates in Clifford+T circuits by treating T gates conjugated by Clifford gates as $\fracπ{4}$-rotations around Pauli operators. The tested benchmarks shows up to $71.43\%$ and an average $42.67\%$ reduction in T-count, both surpass the best performance reported. The worst case complexity of our algorithm is $O(nk^2)$ where $n$ is the number of qubits and $k$ is the number of T gates in the original Clifford+T circuit.
We develop a global variable substitution method that reduces $n$-variable monomials in combinatorial optimization problems to equivalent instances with monomials in fewer variables. We apply this technique to $3$-SAT and analyze the optimal quantum circuit depth needed to solve the reduced problem using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm. For benchmark $3$-SAT problems, we find that the upper bound of the circuit depth is smaller when the problem is formulated as a product and uses the substitution method to decompose gates than when the problem is written in the linear formulatio…
The physical limitations of quantum hardware often require nearest-neighbor qubit structures, in which two-qubit gates are required to construct nearest-neighbor quantum circuits. However, two-qubit gates are considered a major cost of quantum circuits because of their high error rate as compared with single-qubit gates. The controlled-not (CNOT) gate is the typical choice of a two-qubit gate for universal quantum circuit implementation together with the set of single-qubit gates. In this study, we construct a one-dimensional nearest-neighbor circuit of quantum Fourier transform (QFT), which i…
Utilizing counterdiabatic (CD) driving - aiming at suppression of diabatic transition - in digitized adiabatic evolution have garnered immense interest in quantum protocols and algorithms. However, improving the approximate CD terms with a nested commutator ansatz is a challenging task. In this work, we propose a technique of finding optimal coefficients of the CD terms using a variational quantum circuit. By classical optimizations routines, the parameters of this circuit are optimized to provide the coefficients corresponding to the CD terms. Then their improved performance is exemplified in…
The quantum approximate optimization algorithm~(QAOA) first proposed by Farhi et al. promises near-term applications based on its simplicity, universality, and provable optimality. A depth-p QAOA consists of p interleaved unitary transformations induced by two mutually non-commuting Hamiltonians. A long-standing question concerning the performance of QAOA is the dependence of its success probability as a function of circuit depth p. We make initial progress by analyzing the success probability of QAOA for realizing state transfer in a one-dimensional qubit chain using two-qubit XY Hamiltonians…
We propose an efficient method for simultaneously optimizing both the structure and parameter values of quantum circuits with only a small computational overhead. Shallow circuits that use structure optimization perform significantly better than circuits that use parameter updates alone, making this method particularly suitable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. We demonstrate the method for optimizing a variational quantum eigensolver for finding the ground states of Lithium Hydride and the Heisenberg model in simulation, and for finding the ground state of Hydrogen gas on the IB…
Existing quantum compilers focus on mapping a logical quantum circuit to a quantum device and its native quantum gates. Only simple circuit identities are used to optimize the quantum circuit during the compilation process. This approach misses more complex circuit identities, which could be used to optimize the quantum circuit further. We propose Quanto, the first quantum optimizer that automatically generates circuit identities. Quanto takes as input a gate set and generates provably correct circuit identities for the gate set. Quanto's automatic generation of circuit identities includes sin…

Recently, the development of quantum chips has made great progress-- the number of qubits is increasing and the fidelity is getting higher. However, qubits of these chips are not always fully connected, which sets additional barriers for implementing quantum algorithms and programming quantum programs. In this paper, we introduce a general circuit optimizing scheme, which can efficiently adjust and optimize quantum circuits according to arbitrary given qubits' layout by adding additional quantum gates, exchanging qubits and merging single-qubit gates. Compared with the optimizing algorithm of …
Many quantum algorithms make use of oracles which evaluate classical functions on a superposition of inputs. In order to facilitate implementation, testing, and resource estimation of such algorithms, we present quantum circuits for evaluating functions that are often encountered in the quantum algorithm literature. This includes Gaussians, hyperbolic tangent, sine/cosine, inverse square root, arcsine, and exponentials. We use insights from classical high-performance computing in order to optimize our circuits and implement a quantum software stack module which allows to automatically generate…

We present a method for optimizing quantum circuits architecture. The method is based on the notion of "quantum comb", which describes a circuit board in which one can insert variable subcircuits. The method allows one to efficiently address novel kinds of quantum information processing tasks, such as storing-retrieving, and cloning of channels.
Variational quantum algorithms, which utilize Parametrized Quantum Circuits (PQCs), are promising tools to achieve quantum advantage for optimization problems on near-term quantum devices. Their PQCs have been conventionally constructed from parametrized rotational angles of single-qubit gates around predetermined set of axes, and two-qubit entangling gates, such as CNOT gates. We propose a method to construct a PQC by continuous parametrization of both the angles and the axes of its single-qubit rotation gates. The method is based on the observation that when rotational angles are fixed, opti…
The presented work provides a procedure for optimizing the communication cost of a distributed quantum circuit (DQC) in terms of the number of qubit teleportations. Because of technology limitations which do not allow large quantum computers to work as a single processing element, distributed quantum computation is an appropriate solution to overcome this difficulty. Previous studies have applied ad-hoc solutions to distribute a quantum system for special cases and applications. In this study, a general approach is proposed to optimize the number of teleportations for a DQC consisting of two s…

Quantum circuits for mathematical functions such as division are necessary to use quantum computers for scientific computing. Quantum circuits based on Clifford+T gates can easily be made fault-tolerant but the T gate is very costly to implement. The small number of qubits available in existing quantum computers adds another constraint on quantum circuits. As a result, reducing T-count and qubit cost have become important optimization goals. The design of quantum circuits for integer division has caught the attention of researchers and designs have been proposed in the literature. However, the…
