We study the asymptotic behavior of the family of holomorphic correspondences $\lbrace\mathcal{F}_a\rbrace_{a\in\mathcal{K}}$, given by $$\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right)^2+\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right)\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)+\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)^2=3.$$ It was proven by Bullet and Lomonaco that $\mathcal{F}_a$ is a mating between the modular group $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and a quadratic rational map. We show for every $a\in\mathcal{K}$, the iterated images and preimages under $\mathcal{F}_a$ of nonexceptional points equidistribute, in spite of the fact that $\mathcal{F}_a$ is weakly-modular in the sense of Dinh, Kaufmann and Wu but it is not modular. Furthermore, we prove that periodic points equidistribute as well.
We develop dynamical theory for the family of holomorphic correspondences $\mathcal{F}_a$ proved by the current authors to be matings between the modular group and parabolic rational maps in the Milnor slice $Per_1(1)$ (in 'Mating quadratic maps with the modular group II'). Such a mating endows the complement of the limit set of $\mathcal{F}_a$ with the geometry of the hyperbolic plane, equipped with the action of the modular group. We introduce bi-infinite coding sequences for geodesics in this complement, utilising continued fraction expressions of end points; we prove landing theorems for p…
In 1994 S. Bullett and C. Penrose introduced the one complex parameter family of $(2:2)$ holomorphic correspondences $\mathcal{F}_a$: $$\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)^2+\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right) +\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right)^2=3$$ and proved that for every value of $a \in [4,7] \subset \mathbb{R}$ the correspondence $\mathcal{F}_a$ is a mating between a quadratic polynomial $Q_c(z)=z^2+c,\,\,c \in \mathbb{R}$ and the modular group $Γ=PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. They conjectured that this is the case for every member of the family $\mathcal{F}_a$ which has $a$ in the co…
Let T be an exterior modular correspondence on an irreducible locally symmetric space X. In this note, we show that the isolated fixed points of the power T^n are equidistributed with respect to the invariant measure on X as n tends to infinity. A similar statement is given for general sequences of modular correspondences.
We use spectral method to prove a joint equidistribution of primitive rational points and the same along expanding horocycle orbits in the products of the circle and the unit cotangent bundle of the modular surface. This result explicates the error bound in a recent work of Einsiedler, Luethi, and Shah \cite[Theorem $1.1$]{ELS}. The error is sharp upon the best known progress towards the Ramanujan conjecture at the finite places for the modular surface.
For certain classes of holomorphic correspondences which are matings between Kleinian groups and polynomials, we prove the existence of pinching deformations, analogous to Maskit's deformations of Kleinian groups which pinch loxodromic elements to parabolic elements. We apply our results to establish the existence of matings between quadratic maps and the modular group, for a large class of quadratic maps, and of matings between the quadratic map $z\to z^2$ and circle-packing representations of the free product $C\_2*C\_3$ of cyclic groups of order 2 and 3.
In this paper we prove an effective equidistribution result for both primitive and non-primitive points on certain expanding horocycle sections in ASL$(2,\mathbb{Z}) \backslash $ASL$(2,\mathbb{R})$. This provides an effective version of a result recently proven by the author and generalises recent work by Einsiedler, Luethi and Shah who prove similar results in the context of the unit tangent bundle of the modular surface.
We extend Holowinsky and Soundararajan's proof of quantum unique ergodicity for holomorphic Hecke modular forms on SL(2,Z), by establishing it for automorphic forms of cohomological type on GL_2 over an arbitrary number field which satisfy the Ramanujan bounds. In particular, we have uncondtional theorems over totally real and imaginary quadratic fields. In the totally real case we show that our result implies the equidistribution of the zero divisors of holomorphic Hecke modular forms, generalising a result of Rudnick over Q.
We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.
We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.
We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
A closed geodesic on the modular surface gives rise to a knot on the 3-sphere with a trefoil knot removed, and one can compute the linking number of such a knot with the trefoil knot. We show that, when ordered by their length, the set of closed geodesics having a prescribed linking number become equidistributed on average with respect to the Liouville measure. We show this by using the thermodynamic formalism to prove an equidistribution result for a corresponding set of quadratic irrationals on the unit interval.
We consider quadratic Weyl sums $S_N(x;c,α)=\sum_{n=1}^N\exp\{2πi((\frac{1}{2}n^2+cn)x+αn)\}$ for $c=α=0$ (the rational case) or $(c,α)\notin\mathbb{Q}^2$ (the irrational case), where $x$ is randomly distributed according to a probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The limiting distribution in the complex plane of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}S_N(x;c,α)$ as $N\to\infty$ was described by Marklof [13] (respectively Cellarosi and Marklof [5]) in the rational (resp. irrational) case. According to the limiting distribution, the probability of landing outside a ball of…
We consider quadratic Weyl sums $S_N(x;α,β)=\sum_{n=1}^N \exp\!\left[2πi\left( \left(\tfrac{1}{2}n^2+βn\right)\!x+αn\right)\right]$ for $(α,β)\in\mathbb{Q}^2$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}$ is randomly distributed according to a probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We prove that the limiting distribution in the complex plane of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}S_N(x;α,β)$ as $N\to\infty$ is either heavy tailed or compactly supported, depending solely on $α,β$. In the heavy tailed case, the probability (according to the limiting distribution) of landing outside a ball of r…
