We discuss a parabolic version of the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation related to a doubly nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation. Parabolic John-Nirenberg inequalities, which give exponential decay estimates for the oscillation of a function, are shown in the natural geometry of the partial differential equation. Chaining arguments are applied to change the time lag in the parabolic John-Nirenberg inequality. We also show that the quasihyperbolic boundary condition is a necessary and sufficient condition for a global parabolic John-Nirenberg inequality. Moreover, we consider John-Nirenberg inequalities with medians instead of integral averages and show that this approach gives the same class of functions as the original definition.
Let $p\in (1,\infty)$, $q\in[1,\infty)$, $α\in [0,\infty)$ and $s$ be a non-negative integer. In this article, the authors introduce the John--Nirenberg-Campanato space $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is ${\mathbb R}^n$ or any closed cube $Q_0\subsetneqq{\mathbb R}^n$, which when $α=0$ and $s=0$ coincides with the $JN_p$-space introduced by F. John and L. Nirenberg in the sense of equivalent norms. The authors then give the predual space of $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ and a John-Nirenberg type inequality of John--Nirenberg-Campanato spaces. Moreover, the authors prove that…
We develop some techniques for studying various versions of the function space BMO. Special cases of one of our results give alternative proofs of the celebrated John- Nirenberg inequality and of related inequalities due to John and to Wik. Our approach enables us to pose a simply formulated "geometric" question, for which an affirmative answer would lead to a version of the John-Nirenberg inequality with dimension free constants. A more detailed summary of the main ideas and results of this paper can be found at http://www.math.technion.ac.il/~mcwikel/bmo/CwikSaghShvaSummary.pdf
In this article, the authors give a survey on the recent developments of both the John--Nirenberg space $JN_p$ and the space BMO as well as their vanishing subspaces such as VMO, XMO, CMO, $VJN_p$, and $CJN_p$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ or a given cube $Q_0\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite side length. In addition, some related open questions are also presented.
Let $p,q\in [1,\infty]$, $α\in{\mathbb{R}}$, and $s$ be a non-negative integer. In this article, the authors introduce a new function space $\widetilde{JN}_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ of John-Nirenberg-Campanato type, where $\mathcal{X}$ denotes $\mathbb{R}^n$ or any cube $Q_{0}$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite edge length. The authors give an equivalent characterization of $\widetilde{JN}_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ via both the John-Nirenberg-Campanato space and the Riesz-Morrey space. Moreover, for the particular case $s=0$, this new space can be equivalently characterized by both maximal functio…
We compute the exact John--Nirenberg constant of ${\rm BMO}^p((0,1))$ for $1\le p\le 2,$ which has been known only for $p=1$ and $p=2.$ We also show that this constant is attained in the weak-type John--Nirenberg inequality and obtain a sharp lower estimate for the distance in ${\rm BMO}^p$ to $L^\infty.$ These results rely on sharp $L^p$- and weak-type estimates for logarithms of $A_\infty$ weights, which in turn use the exact expressions for the corresponding Bellman functions.
Let $p\in(1,\infty)$, $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in{\mathbb Z}_{+}$, $α\in[0,\infty)$ and $\mathcal{X}$ be $\mathbb R^n$ or a cube $Q_0\subsetneqq\mathbb R^n$. In this article, the authors first introduce the localized John--Nirenberg--Campanato space $jn_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ and show that the localized Campanato space is the limit case of $jn_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ as $p\to\infty$. By means of local atoms and the weak-$*$ topology, the authors then introduce the localized Hardy-kind space $hk_{(p',q',s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$ which proves the predual space of $jn_{(p,q,s)_α}(\mathcal{X})$. Moreov…
This paper is a continuation of earlier work by the first author who determined the John--Nirenberg constant of ${\rm BMO}^p\big((0,1)\big)$ for the range $1\le p\le 2.$ Here, we compute that constant for $p>2.$ As before, the main results rely on Bellman functions for the $L^p$ norms of logarithms of $A_\infty$ weights, but for $p>2$ these functions turn out to have a significantly more complicated structure than for $1\le p\le 2.$
We find sharp constants in the symmetric integral form of the John-Nirenberg inequality. The result is based upon computation of a new interesting Bellman function.
It is known that functions in a Sobolev space with critical exponent embed into the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation, and therefore satisfy the John-Nirenberg inequality and a corresponding exponential integrability estimate. While these inequalities are optimal for general functions of bounded mean oscillation, the main result of this paper is an improvement for functions in a class of critical Sobolev spaces. Precisely, we prove the inequality \[\mathcal{H}^β_{\infty}(\{x\in Ω:|I_αf(x)|>t\})\leq Ce^{-ct^{q'}}\] for all $\|f\|_{L^{N/α,q}(Ω)}\leq 1$ and any $β\in (0,N]$, where $Ω…
To shed some light on the John--Nirenberg space, the authors in this article introduce the John--Nirenberg-$Q$ space via congruent cubes, $JNQ^α_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, which when $p=\infty$ and $q=2$ coincides with the space $Q_α(\mathbb{R}^n)$ introduced by Essén et al. in [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 49 (2000), 575-615]. Moreover, the authors show that, for some particular indices, $JNQ^α_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ coincides with the congruent John--Nirenberg space, or that the (fractional) Sobolev space is continuously embedded into $JNQ^α_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Furthermore, the authors characterize $JN…
We obtain an improvement of the John-Nirenberg inequality for the series of the form $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}n^{-1}e^{2πi n^k x},\;k>2,$ on intervals consisting of points of a same convergent of their continued fractions. We also establish a convergence criterion for these series.
In this paper, we study the John-Nirenberg inequality for BMO and the atomic decomposition for H1 of noncommutative martingales. We first establish a crude version of the column (resp. row) John-Nirenberg inequality for all 0 < p < \infty. By an extreme point property of Lp -space for 0 < p \leq 1, we then obtain a fine version of this in equality. The latter corresponds exactly to the classical John-Nirenberg inequality and enables us to obtain an exponential integrability inequality like in the classical case. These results extend and improve Junge and Musat's John-Nirenberg inequality. By d…
We consider the one-dimensional John-Nirenberg inequality: $$ |\{x\in I_0:|f(x)-f_{I_0}|>\a\}|\le C_1|I_0|\exp\Big(-\frac{C_2}{\|f\|_{*}}\a\Big). $$ A. Korenovskii found that the sharp $C_2$ here is $C_2=2/e$. It is shown in this paper that if $C_2=2/e$, then the best possible $C_1$ is $C_1= \frac{1}{2}e^{4/e}$.
Let $p\in[1,\infty]$, $q\in(1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+:=\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}$, and $α\in\mathbb{R}$. In this article, the authors introduce a reasonable version $\widetilde T$ of the Calderón--Zygmund operator $T$ on $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the special John--Nirenberg--Campanato space via congruent cubes, which coincides with the Campanato space $\mathcal{C}_{α,q,s}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $p=\infty$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde T$ is bounded on $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if, for any $γ\in\mathbb{Z}_+^n$ with $|γ|\leq s$, $T^*(x^γ…
The John-Nirenberg theorem states that functions of bounded mean oscillation are exponentially integrable. In this article we give two extensions of this theorem. The first one relates the dyadic maximal function to the sharp maximal function of Fefferman-Stein, while the second one concerns local weighted mean oscillations, generalizing a result of Muckenhoupt and Wheeden. Applications to the context of generalized Poincaré type inequalities and to the context of the $C_p$ class of weights are given. Extensions to the case of polynomial BMO type spaces are also given.
We develop technical tools that enable the use of Bellman functions for BMO defined on $α$-trees, which are structures that generalize dyadic lattices. As applications, we prove the integral John--Nirenberg inequality and an inequality relating $L^1$- and $L^2$-oscillations for BMO on $α$-trees, with explicit constants. When the tree in question is the collection of all dyadic cubes in $\mathbb{R}^n,$ the inequalities proved are sharp. We also reformulate the John--Nirenberg inequality for the continuous BMO in terms of special martingales generated by BMO functions. The tools presented can be…
We consider the strong form of the John-Nirenberg inequality for the $L^2$-based BMO. We construct explicit Bellman functions for the inequality in the continuous and dyadic settings and obtain the sharp constant as well as the precise bound on the inequality's range of validity, both previously unknown. The results for the two cases are substantially different. The paper not only gives another instance in the short list of such explicit calculations, but also presents the Bellman function method as a sequence of clear steps, adaptable to a wide variety of applications.
In this paper, we will prove a matrix weighted $T1$ theorem regarding the boundedness of certain matrix kernelled CZOs on matrix weighted $L^p(W)$ for matrix A${}_p$ weights $W$. Using some of the ideas from the proof, we will also establish a natural matrix weighted John-Nirenberg result that extends to the matrix setting (in the case when one of the weights is the identity) a very recent characterization of both S. Bloom's BMO space and the two weight boundedness of commutators by I. Holmes, M. Lacey, and B. Wick.
We provide an abstract estimate of the form \[ \|f-f_{Q,μ}\|_{X \left(Q,\frac{\mathrm{d} μ}{Y(Q)}\right)}\leq c(μ,Y)ψ(X)\|f\|_{\mathrm{BMO}(\mathrm{d}μ)} \] for all cubes $Q$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and every function $f\in \mathrm{BMO}(\mathrm{d}μ)$, where $μ$ is a doubling measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $Y$ is some positive functional defined on cubes, $\|\cdot \|_{X \left(Q,\frac{\mathrm{d} w}{w(Q)}\right)}$ is a sufficiently good quasi-norm and $c(μ,Y)$ and $ψ(X)$ are positive constants depending on $μ$ and $Y$, and $X$, respectively. That abstract scheme allows us to recover the sharp estimate \[ \…
Let $p\in[1,\infty]$, $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+:=\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}$, and $α\in\mathbb{R}$. In this article, the authors first find a reasonable version $\widetilde{I}_β$ of the (generalized) fractional integral $I_β$ on the special John--Nirenberg--Campanato space via congruent cubes, $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, which coincides with the Campanato space $\mathcal{C}_{α,q,s}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $p=\infty$. To this end, the authors introduce the vanishing moments up to order $s$ of $I_β$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde{I}_β$ is bounded from $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^…
This paper studies functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) on metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. The main result gives characterizations for mappings that preserve BMO. This extends the corresponding Euclidean results by Gotoh to metric measure spaces. The argument is based on a generalizations Uchiyama's construction of certain extremal BMO-functions and John-Nirenberg's lemma.
We show that, if $b\in L^1(0,T;L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}))$ has spatial derivative in the John-Nirenberg space $\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb{R})$, then it generalizes a unique flow $ϕ(t,\cdot)$ which has an $A_\infty(\mathbb R)$ density for each time $t\in [0,T]$. Our condition on the map $b$ is optimal and we also get a sharp quantitative estimate for the density. As a natural application we establish a well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the transport equation in $\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb R)$.
In this paper we develop the method of finding sharp estimates by using a Bellman function. In such a form the method appears in the proofs of the classical John--Nirenberg inequality and $L^p$ estimations of BMO functions. In the present paper we elaborate a method of solving the boundary value problem for the homogeneous Monge--Ampère equation in a parabolic strip for sufficiently smooth boundary conditions. In such a way we have obtained an algorithm of constructing an exact Bellman function for a large class of integral functionals in the BMO space.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a space of homogenous type and $φ:\ \mathcal{X}\times[0,\infty) \to[0,\infty)$ a growth function such that $φ(\cdot,t)$ is a Muckenhoupt weight uniformly in $t$ and $φ(x,\cdot)$ an Orlicz function of uniformly upper type 1 and lower type $p\in(0,1]$. In this article, the authors introduce a new Musielak-Orlicz BMO-type space $\mathrm{BMO}^φ_A(\mathcal{X})$ associated with the generalized approximation to the identity, give out its basic properties and establish its two equivalent characterizations, respectively, in terms of the spaces $\mathrm{BMO}^φ_{A,\,\mathrm{max}}(\ma…
An RD-space ${\mathcal X}$ is a space of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss with the additional property that a reverse doubling condition holds in ${\mathcal X}$. Let $ρ$ be an admissible function on RD-space ${\mathcal X}$. The authors first introduce the localized spaces $\mathrm{BMO}_ρ({\mathcal X})$ and $\mathrm{BLO}_ρ({\mathcal X})$ and establish their basic properties, including the John-Nirenberg inequality for $\mathrm{BMO}_ρ({\mathcal X})$, several equivalent characterizations for $\mathrm{BLO}_ρ({\mathcal X})$, and some relations between these spaces. Then the author…
In $R^d$, define a maximal function in the directions $v\in \directions\subset\{x \mid \abs x=1\}$ by $$ M^\directions f(x)=\sup_{v\in\directions} \sup_{\zve} \int_{-\ze}^\ze \abs{f(x-vy)} dy. $$ For a function $f$ on $\ZR^d$, let $S_\zw f$ denote the Fourier restriction of $f$ to a region $\zw$. We are especially interested taking \zw to be a sector of $R^d$ with base points at the origin. A sector is a product of the interval $(0,\infty)$ with respect to a choice of (non orthogonal) basis. What is most important is that the basis is a subset of $\directions$. Consider a collection $\zW$ of p…
We study self-improving properties in the scale of Lebesgue spaces of generalized Poincaré inequalities in the Euclidean space. We present an abstract setting where oscillations are given by certain operators (e.g., approximations of the identity, semigroups or mean value operators) that have off-diagonal decay in some range. Our results provide a unified theory that is applicable to the classical Poincaré inequalities and furthermore it includes oscillations defined in terms of semigroups associated with second order elliptic operators as those in the Kato conjecture. In this latter situation…
Varopoulos extensions in domains with Ahlfors-regular boundaries and applications to Boundary Value Problems for elliptic systems with $L^\infty$ coefficients
Our main result is an abstract good-$λ$ inequality that allows us to consider three self-improving properties related to oscillation estimates in a very general context. The novelty of our approach is that there is one principle behind these self-improving phenomena. First, we obtain higher integrability properties for functions belonging to the so-called John-Nirenberg spaces. Second, and as a consequence of the previous fact, we present very easy proofs of some of the self-improving properties of the generalized Poincaré inequalities studied by B. Franchi, C. Pérez and R. Wheeden, and by P. …
