In the nearby (D=14 Mpc) AGN-starburst composite galaxy NGC 1068, it has been found that the molecular gas in the Circum-nuclear Disk (CND) is outflowing, which is a manifestation of ongoing AGN feedback. The outflowing gas has a large spread of velocities, which likely drive different shock chemistry signatures at different locations in the CND. We perform a multi-line molecular study using two shock tracers, SiO and HNCO, with the aim to determine the gas properties traced by these two species, and explore the possibility of reconstructing the shock history in the CND. Five SiO transitions and three HNCO transitions were imaged at high resolution $0''.5-0''.8$ with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We performed both LTE and non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with Bayesian inference process in order to characterize the gas properties, such as molecular gas density and gas temperature. We found clear evidence of chemical differentiation between SiO and HNCO, with the SiO/HNCO ratio ranging from greater than one on the east of CND to lower than one on the west side. The non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with Bayesian inference confirms that the gas traced by SiO has different densities - and possibly temperatures - than that traced by HNCO. We find that SiO traces gas affected by fast shocks while the gas traced by HNCO is either just affected by slow shocks or not shocked at all. A distinct differentiation between SiO and HNCO has been revealed in our observations and the further analysis of the gas properties traced by both species, which confirms the results from previous chemical modelings.
The physical state of the gas in the central 500 pc of NGC~5128 (the radio galaxy Centaurus A - Cen A), was investigated using the far-infrared fine-structure lines of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, as well as the CO(4-3) molecular line. The circumnuclear disk (CND) is traced by emission from dust and the neutral gas ([CI] and CO). A gas outflow with a line-of-sight velocity of 60 km/s is evident in both species. The center of the CND is bright in [OI], [OIII], and [CII]; [OI]63mu emission dominates that of [CII] even though it is absorbed with optical depths of 1.0-1.5. The outflow is well-tra…

We study the star cluster population of NGC 2997, a giant spiral galaxy located at 9.5 Mpc and targeted by the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey (SHUCS). Combining our U-band imaging from SHUCS with archival BVI imaging from HST, we select a high confidence sample of clusters in the circumnuclear ring and disk through a combination of automatic detection procedures and visual inspection. The cluster luminosity functions in all four filters can be approximated by power-laws with indices of $-1.7$ to $-2.3$. Some deviations from pure power-law shape are observed, hinting at the presence of a…
We report on the Herschel/PACS observations of OH in Mrk 231, with detections in 9 doublets observed within the PACS range, and present radiative transfer models for the outflowing OH. Signatures of outflowing gas are found in up to 6 OH doublets with different excitation requirements. At least two outflowing components are identified, one with OH radiatively excited, and the other with low excitation, presumably spatially extended. Particularly prominent, the blue wing of the absorption detected in the in-ladder 2Pi_{3/2} J=9/2-7/2 OH doublet at 65 um, with E_lower=290 K, indicates that the e…
We report our optical spectroscopic study of the nucleus and its surrounding region of a nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418. This galaxy has been known to host a compact obscured nucleus, showing distinct characteristics such as a very compact ($\sim 20$ pc) sub-mm and mid-infrared core and dusty circumnuclear region with massive molecular gas concentration. We detected dusty superwind outflow at $\gtrsim 1$ kpc scale along the disk semiminor axis in both shock-heated emission lines and enhanced interstellar Na D absorption. This superwind shows basic characteristics similar to those of …
We study the multi-phase feedback processes in the central ~3 kpc of the barred Sy 2 galaxy NGC 5643. We use observations of the cold molecular gas (ALMA CO(2-1)) and ionized gas (MUSE IFU). We study different regions along the outflow zone which extends out to ~2.3 kpc in the same direction (east-west) as the radio jet, as well as nuclear/circumnuclear regions in the host galaxy disk. The deprojected outflowing velocities of the cold molecular gas (median Vcentral~189 km s^-1) are generally lower than those of the outflowing ionized gas, which reach deprojected velocities of up to 750 km s^-1…
We present near-infrared and optical emission-line and stellar kinematics of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 573 using the Near-Infrared Field Spectrograph (NIFS) at Gemini North and Dual Imaging Spectrograph (DIS) at Apache Point Observatory, respectively. By obtaining full kinematic maps of the infrared ionized and molecular gas and stellar kinematics in a 700 x 2100 pc^2 circumnuclear region of Mrk 573, we find that kinematics within the Narrow-Line Region (NLR) are largely due to a combination of both rotation and in situ acceleration of material originating in the host disk. Combining these obse…
AGN-driven outflows are believed to play an important role in regulating the growth of galaxies mostly via negative feedback. However, their effects on their hosts are far from clear, especially for low and moderate luminosity Seyferts. To investigate this issue, we have obtained cold molecular gas observations, traced by the CO(2-1) transition, using the NOEMA interferometer of five nearby (distances between 19 and 58 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. The resolution of approx. 0.3-0.8 arcsec (approx. 30-100 pc) and field of view of NOEMA allowed us to study the CO(2-1) morphology and kinematics in the n…
We present a detailed study of AGN feedback in the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. We illustrate the data and techniques needed to determine the mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of the outflowing ionized gas as a function of position in the NLR. We find that the mass outflow rate peaks at a value of 3 solar masses per year at a distance of 70 pc from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), which is about 10 times the outflow rate coming from inside 13 pc, and 230 times the mass accretion rate inferred from the bolometric luminosity of NGC 4151. Thus, most…

We explore the properties of ionized gas in the nuclear and circumnuclear environment of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using spectroscopic and imaging observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Apache Point Observatory (APO)'s ARC 3.5m Telescope. We identify an unresolved moderate-density intermediate width component and a high-density broad component in the optical emission lines from the active nucleus, as well as spatially-resolved emission extending up to $\sim$1 kpc in the AGN ionized narrow-line region (NLR) and $\sim$8 kpc in the stellar ionized host galaxy. The …
Different physical processes in galaxy evolution, such as galaxy mergers that lead to coalescence of dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and outflows emanating from the narrow line region, can leave their imprint on the optical spectra of AGN in the form of double-peaked narrow emission lines. To investigate the neutral gas in the centres of such AGN, we have conducted a pilot survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), in radio-loud AGN whose optical spectra show double-peaked [OIII] emission lines at z<=0.4 (median z~0.14). Among the eight sources…
We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study AGN feedback in the local Universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ~100 pc scales. The starburst ring exh…
There is growing evidence for physical influence between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. We present a case study of nearby galaxy NGC 7582, for which we find evidence that galactic substructure plays an important role in affecting the collimation of ionized outflows as well as contributing to the heavy active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration. This result contrasts with a simple, small-scale AGN torus model, according to which AGN wind collimation may take place inside the torus itself, at subparsec scale. Using 3D spectroscopy with the MUSE instrument, we probe the kinemati…
