System-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves within Earth's magnetosphere are often understood theoretically using box models. While these have been highly instructive in understanding many fundamental features of the various wave modes present, they neglect the complexities of geospace such as the inhomogeneities and curvilinear geometries present. Here we show global MHD simulations of resonant waves impulsively-excited by a solar wind pressure pulse. Although many aspects of the surface, fast magnetosonic (cavity/waveguide), and Alfvén modes present agree with the box and axially symmetric dipole models, we find some predictions for large-scale waves are significantly altered in a realistic magnetosphere. The radial ordering of fast mode turning points and Alfvén resonant locations may be reversed even with monotonic wave speeds. Additional nodes along field lines that are not present in the displacement/velocity occur in both the perpendicular and compressional components of the magnetic field. Close to the magnetopause the perpendicular oscillations of the magnetic field have the opposite handedness to the velocity. Finally, widely-used detection techniques for standing waves, both across and along the field, can fail to identify their presence. We explain how all these features arise from the MHD equations when accounting for a non-uniform background field and propose modified methods which might be applied to spacecraft observations.
Using spatio-temporal spectra we show direct evidence of excitation of magnetosonic and Alfvén waves in three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence at small Mach numbers. For the plasma pressure dominated regime, or high $β$ regime (with $β$ the ratio between fluid and magnetic pressure), and for the magnetic pressure dominated regime, or low $β$ regime, we study magnetic field fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to a guide magnetic field $\textbf{B}_0$. In the low $β$ case we find excitation of compressible and incompressible fluctuations, with a transfer of energy towar…
By performing three-dimensional nonlinear MHD simulations including Alfven eigenmode perturbations most unstable to the ionospheric feedback effects, we reproduced the auroral vortex street that often appears just before substorm onset. We found that an initially placed arc splits, intensifies, and rapidly deforms into a vortex street. We also found that there is a critical convection electric field for growth of the Alfven eigenmodes. The vortex street is shown to be a consequence of coupling between the magnetospheric Alfven waves carrying field-aligned currents and the ionospheric density w…
One of the most striking properties of Kinetic Alfvén Waves (KAW) is that, unlike the also Alfvénic Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron (EMIC) waves, these waves are right-hand polarized in the plasma frame. In particular, this signature property is key for the identification of KAW from in situ measurements of plasma waves. From the theoretical point of view, both the dispersion relation and the polarization of KAW has been mostly studied in proton-electron plasmas. However, most astrophysical and space plasmas are multi-species, and therefore in these systems the dispersion properties of the KAW m…
Rockets and satellites have previously observed small-scale Alfvén waves inside large-scale downward field-aligned currents and numerical simulations have associated their formation with self-consistent magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. The origin of these waves was previously attributed to ionospheric feedback instability, however we show that they arise in numerical experiments in which the instability is excluded. A new interpretation is proposed in which strong ionospheric depletion and associated current broadening (a nonlinear steepening/wavebreaking process) form magnetosphere-ionosphe…
Interactions between plasma particles and electromagnetic waves play a crucial role in the dynamics and regulation of the state of space environments. From plasma physics theory, the characteristics of the waves and their interactions with the plasma strongly depend on the composition of the plasma, among other factors. In the case of the Earth's magnetosphere, the plasma is usually composed by electrons, protons, O+, and He+ ions, all with their particular properties and characteristics. Here, using plasma parameters relevant for the inner magnetosphere we study the dispersion properties of K…
We report Alfvén-wave experiments with liquid rubidium at the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD). Reaching up to 63 T, the pulsed magnetic field exceeds the critical value of 54 T at which the Alfvén speed becomes equal to the sound speed (plasma-$β$ unity). At this threshold we observe a period doubling of an applied 8 kHz CW excitation, a clear footprint for a parametric resonance between magnetosonic waves and Alfvén waves.
The dynamic evolution of coronal mass ejection (CME) in interplanetary space generates highly turbulent, compressed, and heated shock-sheath. This region furnishes a unique environment to study the turbulent fluctuations at the small scales and serve an opportunity for unfolding the physical mechanisms by which the turbulence is dissipated and plasma is heated. How does the turbulence in the magnetized plasma control the energy transport process in space and astrophysical plasmas is an attractive and challenging open problem of the 21st century. For this, the literature discusses three types o…
An analysis of the Alfven wave generation associated with the barium vapor release at altitudes ~ 5.2 Earth's radii (ER) in the magnetosphere is presented. Such injections were executed in G-8 and G-10 experiments of the Combined Radiation and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) mission. It is shown that the generation of Alfven waves is possible during the total time of plasma expansion. The maximum intensity of these waves corresponds to the time of complete retardation of the diamagnetic cavity created by the expansion of plasma cloud. The Alfven wave exhibits a form of an impulse with an e…
The energy transfer during the interaction of large-scale solar wind structure and the Earth's magnetosphere is the chronic issue in space-weather studies. To understand this, researchers widely studied the geomagnetic storms and sub-storms phenomena. The present understanding suggests that long duration of southward interplanetary magnetic field component is the most important parameter for the geomagnetic storm. Such long duration strong southward magnetic field is often associated with ICMEs, torsional Alfven fluctuations superposed co-rotating interacting regions (CIRs) and fast solar wind…

Magnetic reconnection in the solar corona is thought to be unstable to the formation of multiple interacting plasmoids, and previous studies have shown that plasmoid dynamics can trigger MHD waves of different modes propagating outward from the reconnection site. However, variations in plasma parameters and magnetic field strength in the vicinity of a coronal reconnection site may lead to wave reflection and mode conversion. In this paper we investigate the reflection and refraction of fast magnetoacoustic waves near a reconnection site. Under a justified assumption of an analytically specifie…
Phase space holes, double layers and other solitary electric field structures, referred to as time domain structures (TDSs), often occur around dipolarization fronts in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. They are considered to be important because of their role in the dissipation of the injection energy and their potential for significant particle scattering and acceleration. Kinetic Alfvén waves are observed to be excited during energetic particle injections, and are typically present in conjunction with TDS observations. Despite the availability of a large number of spacecraft observations, th…
Alfvén wave collisions are the primary building blocks of the non-relativistic turbulence that permeates the heliosphere and low-to-moderate energy astrophysical systems. However, many astrophysical systems such as gamma-ray bursts, pulsar and magnetar magnetospheres, and active galactic nuclei have relativistic flows or energy densities. To better understand these high energy systems, we derive reduced relativistic MHD equations and employ them to examine weak Alfvénic turbulence, dominated by three-wave interactions, in reduced relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, including the force-free, inf…
This work is an extension of Kaghashvili [1999] where ion-cyclotron wave dissipation channel for Alfvén waves was discussed. While our earlier study dealt with the mode coupling in the commonly discussed sense, here we study changes in the initial waveform due to interaction of the initial driver Alfvén wave and the plasma inhomogeneity, which are implicitly present in the equations, but were not elaborated in Kaghashvili [1999]. Using a cold plasma approximation, we show how high frequency waves (higher than the initial driver Alfvén wave frequency) are generated in the inhomogeneous solar pl…
A planet's magnetosheath extends from downstream of its bow shock up to the magnetopause where the solar wind flow is deflected around the magnetosphere and the solar wind embedded magnetic field lines are draped. This makes the region an important site for plasma turbulence, instabilities, reconnection and plasma depletion layers. A relatively high Alfvén Mach number solar wind and a polar-flattened magnetosphere make the magnetosheath of Saturn both physically and geometrically distinct from the Earth's. The polar flattening is predicted to affect the magnetosheath magnetic field structure a…
Parker Solar Probe (PSP) entered a region of the sub-Alfvenic solar wind during encounter 8 and we present the first detailed analysis of low-frequency turbulence properties in this novel region. The magnetic field and flow velocity vectors were highly aligned during this interval. By constructing spectrograms of the normalized magnetic helicity, cross helicity, and residual energy, we find that PSP observed primarily Alfvenic fluctuations, a consequence of the highly field-aligned flow that renders quasi-2D fluctuations unobservable to PSP. We extend Taylor hypothesis to sub and super Alfveni…
Alfvén waves as excited in black hole accretion disks and neutron star magnetospheres are the building blocks of turbulence in relativistic, magnetized plasmas. A large reservoir of magnetic energy is available in these systems, such that the plasma can be heated significantly even in the weak turbulence regime. We perform high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of counter-propagating Alfvén waves, showing that an $E_{B_{\perp}}(k_{\perp}) \propto k_{\perp}^{-2}$ energy spectrum develops as a result of the weak turbulence cascade in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and its infinitely ma…
Hydromagnetic waves, especially those of frequencies in the range of a few milli-Hz to a few Hz observed in the Earth's magnetosphere, are categorized as Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves or pulsations. They have been extensively studied due to their importance in the interaction with radiation belt particles and in probing the structures of the magnetosphere. We developed an approach in examining the toroidal standing Aflvén waves in a background magnetic field by recasting the wave equation into a Klein-Gordon (KG) form along individual field lines. The eigenvalue solutions to the system are c…
We performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of shear Alfven waves in a full field line system with magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling and plasma non-uniformities. Feedback instability of the Alfven resonant modes showed various nonlinear features under the field line cavities: i) a secondary flow shear instability occurs at the magnetic equator, ii) trapping of the ionospheric Alfven resonant modes facilitates deformation of field-aligned current structures, and iii) hybrid Alfven resonant modes grow to cause vortices and magnetic oscillations around the magnetic equator. Ess…
Cold (eV) ions of ionospheric origin are a major source of magnetospheric plasma. These ions dominate the number density for most of the volume of the magnetosphere, most of the time. This affects large-scale physics, including plasma temperature and pressure (and thus instability thresholds) and the Alfvén velocity (and thus energy transport with waves and the magnetic reconnection rate). This also affects small-scale kinetic plasma physics, including wave generation and the Hall physics of reconnection. Ions escaping from the ionosphere also represent a significant fraction of the mass outfl…
It is shown that two circularly polarised Alfvén waves that propagate along the ambient magnetic field in an uniform plasma trigger non oscillating electromagnetic field components when they cross each other. The non-oscilliating field components can accelerate ions and electrons with great efficiency. This work is based on particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical simulations and on analytical non-linear computations. The analytical computations are done for two counter-propagating monochromatic waves. The simulations are done with monochromatic waves and with wave packets. The simulations show parall…
We obtain dispersion relations of magnetic field fluctuations for two crossings of the terrestrial foreshock by Cluster spacecraft. These crossings cover plasma conditions which differ significantly in their plasma $β$ but not in the properties of the encountered ion population, both showing shell-like distribution function. Dispersion relations are reconstructed using two-point instantaneous wave number estimations from pairs of Cluster spacecraft. The accessible range of wave vectors, limited by the available spacecraft separations, extends to $\approx \!2 \times 10^4$ km. Results show multi…
The multi-spacecraft missions (Cluster and THEMIS) observations allowed to collect large data base for Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves properties, their localization, and sources. Mainly here we focused on these recent results. Studying of the source and characteristics of ULF waves can help in the understanding of the interaction and energy transport from solar wind to the magnetosphere. Here we present peculiarities of ULF waves generated by different solar wind phenomenon: surface magnetopause instability, magnetosphere cavity modes and solar wind dynamic pressure sudden impulses (SI) penet…

A set of numerical solvers for the linear dispersion relations of the gyrokinetic, the hybrid-kinetic, and the fully kinetic model is employed to study the physics of the kinetic Alfvén wave and the fast magnetosonic mode in these models. In particular, we focus on parameters that are relevant for solar wind oriented applications (using a homogeneous, isotropic background), which are characterized by wave propagation angles averaging close to 90°. It is found that the gyrokinetic model, while lacking high-frequency solutions and cyclotron effects, faithfully reproduces the fully kinetic Alfvén…
We investigate compressive turbulence at sub-ion scales with measurements from the Magnetospheric MultiScale Mission. The tetrahedral configuration and high time resolution density data obtained by calibrating spacecraft potential allow an investigation of the turbulent density fluctuations in the solar wind and their three-dimensional structure in the sub-ion range. The wave-vector associated with the highest energy density at each spacecraft frequency is obtained by application of the Multi-point signal resonator technique to the four-point density data. The fluctuations show a strong wave-v…
The magnetization $|Ω_{\mathrm e}|/ω_{\mathrm{e}}$ is an important parameter in plasma astrophysics, where $Ω_{\mathrm e}$ and $ω_{\mathrm{e}}$ are the electron gyro-frequency and electron plasma frequency, respectively. It only depends on the mass ratio $m_{\mathrm i}/m_{\mathrm e}$ and the light-to-Alfvén speed ratio $c/v_{\mathrm{Ai}}$, where $m_{\mathrm i}$ ($m_{\mathrm e}$) is the ion (electron) mass, $c$ is the speed of light, and $v_{\mathrm{Ai}}$ is the ion Alfvén speed. Nonlinear numerical plasma models such as particle-in-cell simulations must often assume unrealistic values for $m_{…
The growth of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves (EMIC) due to a ring distribution of Hydrogen ions is examined. Though these distributions are more commonly implicated in the generation of equatorial noise, their potential for exciting EMIC waves is considered here. It is shown that since the ring distribution is non-monotonic in perpendicular velocity, the amplification achieved by this instability is greater than bi-Maxwellian distributions for typical anisotropies, because the waves can maintain resonance over a much longer part of its trajectory. For ring speeds V_R close to the Alfven s…
In this paper, we analyzed a number of problems that are relevant for the physics of solar-terrestrial relationships and the dynamics of geospheres. It is shown that permanent 5-minute oscillations of the photosphere, well known in helioseismology, probably influence regime of the ultra low frequency (ULF) geoelectromagnetic waves. We detected maxima at a period close to 5 min in the spectra of the ULF waves of SE, BMP and Pc5 types. As for the question of the influence of 5-minute oscillations of the photosphere on geoseismicity, the answer is negative. This could be foreseen in advance, but …
