We develop of a field-theoretic approach for the treatment of both the non-local and the non-linear response of structured liquid dielectrics. Our systems of interest are composed of dipolar solvent molecules and simple salt cations and anions. We describe them by two independent order parameters, the polarization field for the solvent and the charge density field for the ions, including and treating the non-electrostatic part of the interactions explicitly and consistently. We show how to derive functionals for the polarization and the electrostatic field of increasingly finer scales and solve the resulting mean-field saddle-point equations in the linear regime. We derive criteria for the character of their solutions that depend on the structural lengths and the polarity of the solvent. Our approach provides a systematic way to derive generalized polarization theories.
We present the results of an analytical theory and simulations of the field inside a cavity created in a dipolar liquid placed in a uniform external electric field. The analytical theory shows that the limit of continuum electrostatics is reached through a singularity in the microscopic response function responsible for a non-decaying longitudinal polarization wave. Fields in microscopic cavities are much different from macroscopic predictions, and low-polarity dielectrics are predicted to have a continuum limit distinct from the solution of Maxwell's equations. Computer Monte Carlo simulation…
Aequous dielectrics are ubiquitous in soft- and bio-nano matter systems. The theoretical description of such systems in terms of continuum (`macroscopic') theory remains a serious challenge. In this perspective we first review the existing continuum phenomenological approaches that have been developed in the past decades. In order to describe a path to advance continuum theory beyond these approaches we then take recourse to the Onsager-Dupuis theory of the dielectric behaviour of ice, which, for the case of a solid dielectric, exemplified important conceptual issues we deem relevant for the d…
Molecular dynamics of two water models, SPC/E and TIP3P, at a number of temperatures is used to test the Kivelson-Madden equation connecting single-particle and collective dielectric relaxation times through the Kirkwood factor. The relation is confirmed by simulations and used to estimate the nonlinear effect of the electric field on the dielectric relaxation time. We show that the main effect of the field comes through slowing down of the single-particle rotational dynamics and the relative contribution of the field-induced alteration of the Kirkwood factor is insignificant for water. Theori…
The interaction of charges in dielectric materials is screened by the dielectric constant of the bulk dielectric. In dielectric theories, screening is assigned to the surface charge appearing from preferential orientations of dipoles along the local field in the interface. For liquid dielectrics, such interfacial orientations are affected by the interfacial structure characterized by a separate interfacial dielectric susceptibility. We argue that dielectric properties of polar liquids should be characterized by two distinct susceptibilities responsible for local response (solvation) and long-r…
The surface of a polar liquid presents a special environment for the solvation and organization of charged solutes, which differ from bulk behaviors in important ways. These differences have motivated many attempts to understand electrostatic response at aqueous interfaces in terms of a spatially varying dielectric permittivity, typically concluding that the dielectric constant of interfacial water is significantly lower than in the bulk liquid. Such analyses, however, are complicated by the potentially nonlocal nature of dielectric response over the short length scales of interfacial heteroge…
We present a direct comparison of the number of dynamically correlated molecules in the shear-mechanical and dielectric relaxations of the following seven supercooled organic liquids: triphenylethylene, tetramethyl-tetraphenyl-trisiloxane, polyphenyl ether, perhydrosqualene, polybutadiene, decahydroisoquinoline, and tripropylene glycol. For each liquid we observe that the numbers of dynamically correlated molecules in the shear and in the dielectric relaxation are proportional. We show that this proportionality can be explained by the constancy of the decoupling index of the shear and dielectr…
The dielectric response of supercooled liquids is phenomenologically modeled by a set of Asymmetric Double Wells (ADW), where each ADW contains a dynamical heterogeneity of $N_{corr}$ molecules. We find that the linear macroscopic susceptibility $χ_1$ does not depend on $N_{corr}$ contrary to all higher order susceptibilities $χ_{2k+1}$. We show that $χ_{2k+1}$ is proportional to the $k^{th}$ moment of $N_{corr}$, which could pave the way for new experiments on glass transition. In particular, as predicted by Bouchaud and Biroli on general grounds [Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 72}, 064204 (2005)], we fi…
The dielectric dispersion in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystals affects the switching dynamics of the director, as the dielectric torque is determined by not only the present values of the electric field and director but also by their past values. We demonstrate that this dielectric memory leads to an unusual contribution to the dielectric torque that is linear in the present field and thus polarity-sensitive. This torque can be used to accelerate the switch-off phase of director dynamics.
We present a general theory of electric field effects in liquid crystals where the dielectric tensor depends on the orientation order. As applications, we examine (i) the director fluctuations in nematic states in electric field for arbitrary strength of the dielectric anisotropy and (ii) deformation of the nematic order around a charged particle. Some predictions are made for these effects.
The report presents pressure-related broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) studies in liquid crystalline octyloxycyanbiphenyl and its nanocolloid with BaTiO3 nanoparticles, focused on the low-frequency ionic domain and the impact of pretransitional fluctuations. Hence basic exogenic (pressure) and endogenic (nanoparticles) impacts on dielectric properties are addressed. The innovative derivative-based analysis revealed functional 'critical-like' descriptions of ionic contributions to dielectric permittivity and electric conductivity. The supplementary dielectric constant scan, yielding insig…
We present a detailed study of the heating effects in dielectric measurements carried out on a liquid. Such effects come from the dissipation of the electric power in the liquid and give a contribution to the nonlinear third harmonics susceptibility chi_3 which depends on the frequency and temperature. This study is used to evaluate a possible `spurious' contribution to the recently measured nonlinear susceptibility of an archetypical glassforming liquid (Glycerol). Those measurements have been shown to give a direct evaluation of the number of dynamically correlated molecules temperature depe…
In this contribution, a new POM-based ionic liquid, namely (P6,6,6,14)4[W10O32], was fully characterized. Its viscosity and its very low dielectric constant make this hybrid ionic liquid suitable to be used as solvent for organic transformations. As proof of concept, this unique ionic liquid combining solvant and catalyst properties was tested for catalytic oxidation of various alcohols and alkenes in presence of H2O2
We study electrophoretic mobility of metal-dielectric Janus particles with dipolar director profile in two nematic liquid crystals (LCs) having same (positive) conductivity anisotropy and opposite dielectric anisotropy. The applied ac electric field is parallel and perpendicular to the director for the positive and negative dielectric anisotropy LCs, respectively. The velocity of the Janus particles in both LCs is significantly higher than that of the non-Janus particles. We map the electroosmotic flow fields surrounding the particles using microparticle image velocimetry ($μ$-PIV) and show th…
Statistical theory of the dielectric susceptibility of polar liquid crystals is proposed. The molecules are calamitic or bent-core but the permanent dipole moment is perpendicular to the molecule long axis. The ordering of the phase is described by means of the mean-field theory based on the Maier-Saupe approach. The theory is used to calculate the temperature dependence of the order parameters and the susceptibilities. The phase diagram with four phases is obtained: isotropic, uniaxial nematic, uniaxial ferroelectric, and biaxial ferroelectric. Four critical points are predicted.
We investigate the modification of gas phase ion polarizabilities upon solvation in polar solvents and ionic liquids. To this aim, we develop a classical electrostatic theory of charged liquids composed of solvent molecules modeled as finite size dipoles, and embedding polarizable ions that consist of Drude oscillators. In qualitative agreement with ab-initio calculations of polar solvents and ionic liquids, the hydration energy of a polarizable ion in both type of dielectric liquid is shown to favor the expansion of its electronic cloud. Namely, the ion carrying no dipole moment in the gas ph…
Statistical theory of the dielectric susceptibility of polar liquid crystals is proposed. The molecules are not uniaxial but similar to cones. It is assumed that the permanent dipole moment of a molecule is parallel to the axis of the rotational symmetry. The ordering of the phase is described by means of the mean field theory based on the Maier-Saupe approach. The theory was used to calculate the temperature dependence of the order parameters and the susceptibilities. Predictions of the model for different sets of parameters are investigated.
In this article we present calculations of van der Waals/Casimir forces, described by Lifshitz theory, for the solid-liquid-solid system using measured dielectric functions of all involved materials for the wavelength range from millimeters down to subnanometers. It is shown that even if the dielectric function is known over all relevant frequency ranges, the scatter in the dielectric data, can lead to very large scatter in the calculated van der Waals/Casimir forces. Especially when the liquid dielectric function becomes comparable in magnitude to the dielectric function of one of the interac…
Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy has enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed to provide strong support for theories of dynamic arrest based on thermodynamic amorphous order. Here we approach this question from the perspective of dynamic facilitation, an alternative view focusing on emergent kinetic constraints underlying the dynamic arrest of a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent higher-order dielectric susceptibilities exhibit…
Ethanol is a common protein crystallization agent, precipitant, and denaturant, but also alters the dielectric properties of solutions. While ethanol-induced unfolding is largely ascribed to its hydrophobic parts, its effect on protein phase separation and inter-protein interactions remains poorly understood. Here, the effects of ethanol and NaCl on the phase behavior and interactions of protein solutions are studied in terms of the metastable liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and the second virial coefficient $B_2$ using lysozyme solutions. Determination of the phase diagrams shows that t…
The static dielectric constant of liquid water is computed using classical force field based molecular dynamics simulation at fixed electric displacement D. The method to constrain the electric displacement is the finite temperature classical variant of the constant-D method developed by Stengel, Spaldin and Vanderbilt (Nat. Phys. 2009, 5: 304). There is also a modification of this scheme imposing fixed values of the macroscopic field E. The method is applied to the popular SPC/E model of liquid water. We compare four different estimates of the dielectric constant, two obtained from fluctuatio…
We have performed dielectric spectroscopy on the molecular glass-formers glycerol, propylene carbonate (PC) and the ionic melts CKN and CRN. The frequency range covers almost 20 decades from some micro-Hz to some THz. The meausrement results are compared to neutron and light scattering data and analysed with mode coupling theory.
In a sharp contrast to the response of silica particles we show that the metal-dielectric Janus particles with boojum defects in a nematic liquid crystal are self-propelled under the action of an electric field applied perpendicular to the director. The particles can be transported along any direction in the plane of the sample by selecting the appropriate orientation of the Janus vector with respect to the director. The direction of motion of the particles is controllable by varying the field amplitude and frequency. The command demonstrated on the motility of the particles is promising for t…
The non-exponential shape of the $α$-process observed in supercooled liquids is considered as one of the hallmarks of glassy dynamics and has thus been under study for decades, but is still poorly understood. For a polar van der Waals liquid, we show here - in line with a recent theory - that dipole-dipole correlations give rise to an additional process in the dielectric spectrum slightly slower than the $α$-relaxation, which renders the resulting combined peak narrower than observed by other experimental techniques. This is reminiscent of the Debye process found in monohydroxy alcohols. The a…
Ionic liquids are promising candidates for electrolytes in energy-storage systems. We demonstrate that mixing two ionic liquids allows to precisely tune their physical properties, like the dc conductivity. Moreover, these mixtures enable the gradual modification of the fragility parameter, which is believed to be a measure of the complexity of the energy landscape in supercooled liquids. The physical origin of this index is still under debate; therefore, mixing ionic liquids can provide further insights. From the chemical point of view, tuning ionic liquids via mixing is an easy and thus an ec…
Janus particles are special types of nano or micro particles possessing at least two surfaces with distinct physical or chemical properties. The most studied Janus particles are the metal-dielectric particles, in which half surface of dielectric particles is coated with a very thin layer of metals. The external electric field induces dipole moment, and consequently the particles exhibit self-assembled dynamic structures in concentrated aqueous suspensions. Here, we study metal-dielectric Janus particles in a nematic liquid crystal under AC electric field and demonstrate a novel method for meas…
This paper presents dielectric relaxation data for organic glass-forming liquids compiled from different groups and supplemented by new measurements. The main quantity of interest is the "minimum slope" of the $α$ dielectric loss plotted as a function of frequency in a log-log plot (i.e., the numerically largest slope above the loss peak frequency). The data consisting of 347 spectra for 53 liquids show prevalence of minimum slopes close to -1/2, corresponding to approximate square-root-time dependence of the dielectric relaxation function at short times. The paper further studies possible cor…
Since its introduction, liquid viscosity and relaxation time $τ$ have been considered to be an intrinsic property of the system that is essentially local in nature and therefore independent of system size. We perform dielectric relaxation experiments in glycerol, and find that this is the case at high temperature only. At low temperature, $τ$ increases with system size and becomes non-local. We discuss the origin of this effect in a picture based on liquid elasticity length, the length over which local relaxation events in a liquid interact via induced elastic waves, and find good agreement be…
The structure of polar liquids and electrolytic solutions, such as water and aqueous electrolytes, at interfaces underlies numerous phenomena in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In this work, we develop a continuum theory that captures the essential features of dielectric screening by polar liquids at charged interfaces, including oscillations in charge and mass, starting from the molecular properties of the solvent. The theory predicts an anisotropic dielectric tensor of interfacial polar liquids previously studied in molecular dynamics simulations. We explore the effect of the i…
Macroscale robotic systems have demonstrated great capabilities of high speed, precise, and agile functions. However, the ability of soft robots to perform complex tasks, especially in centimeter and millimeter scale, remains limited due to the unavailability of fast, energy-efficient soft actuators that can programmably change shape. Here, we combine desirable characteristics from two distinct active materials: fast and efficient actuation from dielectric elastomers and facile shape programmability from liquid crystal elastomers into a single shape changing electrical actuator. Uniaxially ali…
The evolution of the interface between two ideal dielectric liquids in a strong vertical electric field is studied. It is found that a particular flow regime, for which the velocity potential and the electric field potential are linearly dependent functions, is possible if the ratio of the permittivities of liquids is inversely proportional to the ratio of their densities. The corresponding reduced equations for interface motion are derived. In the limit of small density ratio, these equations coincide with the well-known equations describing the Laplacian growth.

The ion distribution of electrolytes near interfaces with dielectric contrast has important consequences for electrochemical processes and many other applications. To date, most studies of such systems have focused on geometrically simple interfaces, for which dielectric effects are analytically solvable or computationally tractable. However, all real surfaces display nontrivial structure at the nanoscale and have, in particular, nonuniform local curvature. Using a recently developed, highly efficient computational method, we investigate the effect of surface geometry on ion distribution and i…
We propose a dynamic structure of coupled dynamic molecular strings for supercooled small polar molecule liquids and accordingly we obtain the Hamiltonian of the rotational degrees of freedom of the system. From the Hamiltonian, the strongly correlated supercooled polar liquid state is renormalized to a normal superdipole (SD) liquid state. This scenario describes the following main features of the primary or a-relaxation dynamics in supercooled polar liquids: (1) the average relaxation time evolves from a high temperature Arrhenius to a low temperature non-Arrhenius or super-Arrhenius behavio…
We present nonlinear dielectric measurements of glass-forming glycerol and propylene carbonate applying electrical fields up to 671 kV/cm. The measurements extend to sufficiently high frequencies to allow for the investigation of the nonlinear behavior in the regime of the so-far mysterious excess wing, showing up in the loss spectra of many glass formers as a second power law at high frequencies. Surprisingly, we find a complete lack of nonlinear behavior in the excess wing, in marked contrast to the alpha-relaxation where, in agreement with previous reports, a strong increase of dielectric c…
The standard Maxwell formulation of the problem of polarized dielectrics suffers from a number of difficulties, both conceptual and practical. These difficulties are particularly significant in the case of liquid interfaces, where the ability of the interfacial multipoles to change their orientations to minimize their free energies leads to interfacial polarization localized within a thin microscopic layer. A formalism to capture this physical reality of localized interfacial polarization is proposed and is based on the surface charge as the source of microscopic electric fields in dielectrics…
Spherical confinement can alter the properties of a dipolar fluid in several different ways. In an atomistic molecular dynamics simulation study of two different dipolar liquids (SPC/E water and a model Stockmayer fluid) confined to nanocavities of different radii ranging from Rc=1nm to 4nm, we find that the Kirkwood correlation factor remains surprisingly small in water, but not so in model Stockmayer liquid. This gives rise to an anomalous ultrafast relaxation of the total dipole moment time correlation function (DMTCF). The static dielectric constant of water under nanoconfinement (computed…
In this Letter, we present a simple model of aqueous interfacial molecular structure and we use this model to isolate the effects of hydrogen bonding on the dielectric properties of the liquid water-vapor interface. By comparing this model to the results of atomistic simulation we show that the anisotropic distribution of molecular orientations at the interface can be understood by considering the behavior of a single water molecule interacting with the average interfacial density field via an empirical hydrogen bonding potential. We illustrate that the depth dependence of this orientational a…
Short pitch deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystals have numerous applications as active materials in displays, optical telemetry and biomedical devices. In this paper, we derive convenient analytical formulas to calculate the effective dielectric tensor of these materials beyond the space average approximation. By comparison with exact numerical calculations, we show that our formulas are remarkably accurate in predicting optical properties in virtually all practical situations, including the important case of large tilt angles, where the space average approximation breaks down. We also …
The guest-host liquid crystal display, first proposed in 1968, relies on controlling the orientation of dichroic dyes dissolved in a nematic liquid crystal host. Controlling the orientation of the liquid crystal and of the dissolved dye with an electric field allows control of the transmittance of the cell. Knowing the dielectric properties at optical frequencies of the dye and liquid crystal mixtures is crucial for the optimal design of guest-host liquid crystal devices. In this work, the dielectric functions of various layers in liquid crystal cells are described by models obeying the Kramer…

We studied dielectric properties of a polar nematic phase (NF) sandwiched between two gold or ITO electrodes, serving as a cell surfaces. In bulk, NF is expected to exhibit a Goldstone mode (phason), because polarization can uniformly rotate with no energy cost. However, because the coupling between the direction of nematic director and polarization is finite, and the confinement, even in the absence of the aligning surface layer, induces some energy cost for a reorientation of polarization, the phason dielectric relaxation frequency is measured in a kHz regime. The phason mode is easily quenc…
Transferability of the chemical bond-based machine learning model for dipole moment: the GHz to THz dielectric properties of liquid propylene glycol and polypropylene glycol
We describe electrophoresis of spherical dielectric particles in a uniformly aligned nematic medium with a negative dielectric anisotropy. A spherical particle that orients the liquid crystal (LC) perpendicularly to its surface moves under the application of the uniform direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) electric field. The electric field causes no distortions of the LC director far away from the sphere. Electrophoresis in the nematic LC shows two types of nonlinearity in the velocity vs. field dependence. The velocity component parallel to the applied electric field grows linearl…
An accurate experimental and theoretical study has been performed about a phenomenon, not previously reported in the literature, occurring in highly viscous liquids: the formation of a definite pipe structure induced by the passage of a heavy body, this structure lasting for quite a long time. A very rich phenomenology (including mechanical, optical and structural effects) associated with the formation of the pipe has been observed in different liquids. Actually, the peculiar dynamical evolution of that structure does not appear as a trivial manifestation of standard relaxation or spurious eff…

The self-organizing properties of nematic liquid crystals (LC) can be used to template carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a macroscopic dimension. The nematic director field, coupled to the dispersed CNT long-axis, enables controlled director reorientation using well-established methods of LC alignment techniques, such as patterned-electrode-surface, electric fields, and magnetic fields. Electric field induced director rotation of a nematic LC+CNT system is of potential interests due to its possible applications as a nano electromechanical system. The relaxation mechanism for a LC+CNT composite, on th…
We present an accurate free-energy functional for liquid water written in terms of a set of effective potential fields in which fictitious noninteracting water molecules move. The functional contains an \emph{exact} expression of the entropy of noninteracting molecules and thus provides an ideal starting point for the inclusion of complex inter-molecular interactions which depend on the \emph{orientation} of the interacting molecules. We show how an excess free-energy functional can be constructed to reproduce the following properties of water: the dielectric response; the experimental site-si…
One of the hallmarks of molecular dynamics in deeply supercooled liquids is the non-exponential character of the relaxation functions. It has been a long standing issue if 'universal' features govern the lineshape of glassy dynamics independent of any particular molecular structure or interaction. In the paper, we elucidate this matter by giving a comprehensive comparison of the spectral shape of depolarized light scattering and dielectric data of deeply supercooled liquids. The light scattering spectra of very different systems, e.g. hydrogen bonding and van der Waals liquids but also ionic s…
The report shows the temperature behavior of the real part of dielectric permittivity in the static (dielectric constant) and lo-frequency (LF) domains in bulk samples of 11CB and BaTiO3-based nanocolloids. The study covers the Isotropic Liquid (I), Nematic (N), Smectoc A (SmA) and Solid CRystal (Cr) phases. For each phase, the dominance of pretransitional fluctuations, significantly moderated by nanoparticles is shown. The authors consider separate focus on dielectric constant(Eps(T)) evolution in the static domain yielding mainly response from permanent dipole moments and their arrangement a…
The Nagel-scaling and the modified scaling procedure proposed recently by Dendzik et al. have been applied to broadband dielectric data on two glass- forming liquids (glycerol and propylene carbonate) and three plastic crystals (ortho-carborane, meta-carborane, and 1-cyano-adamantane). Our data extend the upper limit of the abscissa range to considerably higher values than in previously published analyses. At the highest frequencies investigated, deviations from a single master curve show up which are most pronounced in the Dendzik-scaling plot. The loss curves of the plastic crystals do not s…
We studied dielectric properties of nano-sized liquid water samples confined in polymerized silicates MCM-41 characterized by the porous sizes \sim 3-10nm. We report the direct measurements of the dielectric constant by the dielectric spectroscopy method at frequencies 25Hz-1MHz and demonstrate clear signatures of the second-order phase transition of ferroelectric nature at temperatures next to the λ- point in the bulk supercooled water. The presented results support the previously developed polar liquid phenomenology and hence establish its applicability to model actual phenomena in liquid wa…
