We study the quantum backflow problem of a relativistic charged Dirac fermion constrained to move on a ring of radius $R$. Using the relativistic current operator we compute the probability flux through a generic time interval to show emergence of quantum backflow. We also discuss the limiting case when the particle moves along a line.
It was known that a free, nonrelativistic particle in a superposition of positive momenta can, in certain cases, bear a negative probability current --- hence termed quantum backflow. Here, it is shown that more variations can be brought about for a free Dirac particle, particularly when negative-energy solutions are taken into account. Since any Dirac particle can be understood as an antiparticle that acts oppositely (and vice versa), quantum backflow is found to arise in the superposition (i) of a well-defined momentum but different signs of energies, or more remarkably (ii) of different sig…
Closed-form, normalizable solutions of Dirac's equation propagating within a semi-infinite cylindrical waveguide are obtained in terms of ordinary and modified Bessel functions. These relativistic wave packets induce quantum backflow on a cross-section of the cylinder at practically any distance along the waveguide, becoming spin-polarized in the nonrelativistic limit. The predicted backflow is stable in time and is manifest regardless of the initial wave function.
We show that, contrary to the statements made by many authors, the backflow is not a nonclassical effect. The backflow is a characteristic feature of solutions of the wave equations: quantum and classical. We present simple solutions of the Dirac equation, Maxwell equations and equations of linearized gravity where the backflow phenomenon is clearly seen. In this work we describe backflow in relativistic theories but this phenomenon can occur in the solutions of all kinds of wave equations: quantum and classical.
In this work, dissipative quantum backflow is studied for a superposition of two stretched Gaussian wave packets and two identical spinless particles within the Caldirola-Kanai framework. Backflow is mainly an interference process and dissipation is not able to suppress it in the first case. For two identical spinless particles, apart from interference terms, the symmetry of the wave function seems to be crucial in this dynamics. The combined properties make bosons display this effect, even for the dissipative regime but, for fermions, backflow is not exhibited in any regime, dissipative and n…
In this paper, we investigate a five-dimensional Dirac fermion on a quantum graph that consists of a single vertex and $N$ loops. We find that the model possesses a rich structure of boundary conditions for wavefunctions on the quantum graph and they can be classified into $(2N+1)$ distinct categories. It is then shown that there appear degenerate four-dimensional chiral massless fermions in the four-dimensional mass spectrum. We briefly discuss how our model could naturally solve the problems of the fermion generation, the fermion mass hierarchy and the origin of the $CP$-violating phase.
It is shown that a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the axially symmetric electromagnetic vector potential has the same matrix structure as that one for the planar Dirac oscillator. In particular, the planar Dirac oscillator can be interpreted as a charged particle minimally coupled to a transverse homogeneous magnetic field.
The Dirac equation in $(2+1)$ dimensions on the toroidal surface is studied for a massless fermion particle under the action of external fields. Using the covariant approach based on general relativity, the Dirac operator stemming from a metric related to the strain tensor is discussed within the Pseudo-Hermitian operator theory. Furthermore, analytical solutions are obtained for two cases, namely, constant and position-dependent Fermi velocity.
The problem of simulating through quantum walks Dirac fermions in arbitrary curved space-times and coordinates is revisited, taking (1 + 1)D space-times as an example. A new shift or translation operator on the grid is introduced, to take into account arbitrary geometries. The new, generalised quantum walks built with this operator can simulate Dirac fermions in arbitrary curved space-times and coordinates, and their wave functions have exactly the same number of components as standard Dirac spinors, and not twice that number, as previously believed. In particular, in $(1 + 1)$D space-times, o…
We use the Wick-rotated time-dependent supersymmetry to construct models of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in presence of an electrostatic grating. We show that there appears omnidirectional perfect transmission through the grating at specific energy. Additionally to being transparent for incoming fermions, the grating hosts strongly localized states.
We use the framework of supersymmetric transformations in the construction of coupled systems of Dirac fermions. Its energy operator is a composite of the generators of the associated superalgebra, and the two coupled Dirac fermions acquire different Fermi velocities. We discuss in detail the peculiar spectral properties of the new system. The emergent phenomena like level crossing or generation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) are illustrated in two explicit examples.
The Dirac fermion is an important fundamental particle appearing in high-energy physics and topological insulator physics. In particular, a Dirac fermion in a one-dimensional lattice system exhibits the essential properties of topological physics. However, the system has not been quantum simulated in experiments yet. Herein, we propose a one-dimensional generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermion model and study its topological phase structure. We show the experimental setups of an atomic quantum simulator for the model, in which two parallel optical lattices with the same tilt for trapping cold …
