We present a statistical analysis on the variability of the incompressible energy cascade rate in the solar wind around Mars, making use of an exact relation for fully developed turbulence and more than five years of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations. Using magnetic field and plasma data, we compute the energy cascade rate in the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scales in the pristine solar wind. From our statistical results, we conclude that the incompressible energy cascade rate decreases as the Martian heliocentric distance increases, for each of the three explored Martian years. Moreover, we show that the presence of proton cyclotron waves, associated with the extended Martian hydrogen exosphere, do not have a significant effect in the nonlinear cascade of energy at the MHD scales.
The first estimation of the incompressible energy cascade rate at magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales is obtained in the plasma upstream of the Martian bow shock, using MAVEN observations and an exact relation derived for MHD turbulence. The energy cascade rate is computed for events with and without proton cyclotron wave (PCW) activity, for time intervals when MAVEN was in the solar wind with no magnetic connection to the bow shock. It is shown that the nonlinear cascade of energy at the MHD scales is slightly amplified when PCWs are present in the plasma. The analysis of the normalized cross he…
The Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Cascade Rate Upstream of Mars: Effects of the Total Energy and the Cross-Helicity on Solar Wind Turbulence
We derive a first exact law for compressible pressure-anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. For a gyrotropic pressure tensor, we study the double-adiabatic case and show the presence of new flux and source terms in the exact law, reminiscent of the plasma instability conditions due to pressure anisotropy. The Hall term is shown to bring ion-scale corrections to the exact law without affecting explicitly the pressure terms. In the pressure isotropy limit we recover all known results obtained for isothermal and polytropic closures. The incompressible limit of the gyrotropic system leads to…

Using an exact law for incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) turbulence, the energy cascade rate is computed from three-dimensional HMHD-CGL (bi-adiabatic ions and isothermal electrons) and Landau fluid (LF) numerical simulations that feature different intensities of Landau damping over a broad range of wavenumbers, typically $0.05\lesssim k_\perp d_i \lesssim100$. Using three sets of cross-scale simulations where turbulence is initiated at large, medium and small scales, the ability of the fluid energy cascade to "sense" the kinetic Landau damping at different scales is tested. The …
Turbulence properties are examined before, during and after a coronal mass ejection (CME) detected by the6Wind spacecraft on July 2012. The power-law scaling of the structure functions, providing information on the7power spectral density and flatness of the velocity, magnetic filed and density fluctuations, were examined. The8third-order moment scaling law for incompressible, isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence was observed9in the preceding and trailing solar wind, as well as in the CME sheath and magnetic cloud. This suggests that10the turbulence could develop sufficiently after the shoc…
The first computation of the compressible energy transfer rate from $\sim$ 0.2 AU up to $\sim$ 1.7 AU is obtained using PSP, THEMIS and MAVEN observations. The compressible energy cascade rate $\varepsilon_C$ is computed for hundred of events at different heliocentric distances, for time intervals when the spacecraft were in the pristine solar wind. The observational results show moderate increases of $\varepsilon_C$ with respect to the incompressible cascade rate $\varepsilon_I$. Depending on the level of compressibility in the plasma, which reach up to 25 $\%$ in the PSP perihelion, the diff…
``Exact'' laws for evaluating cascade rates, tracing back to the Kolmogorov ``4/5'' law, have been extended to many systems of interest including magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and compressible flows of the magnetofluid and ordinary fluid types. It is understood that implementations may be limited by the quantity of available data and by the lack of turbulence symmetry. Assessment of the accuracy and feasibility of such ``third-order'' (or Yaglom) relations is most effectively accomplished by examining the von Karman-Howarth equation in increment form, a framework from which the third-order laws …
