We present a setup for highly polarized proton beams using two parallel propagating laser pulses that have a carrier envelope phase difference of $π$. This mechanism is examined utilizing particle-in-cell simulations and compared to a single-pulse setup commonly used for magnetic vortex acceleration. We find that the use of the dual-pulse setup allows for peak energies of 124 MeV and good angular spread for two pulses with normalized laser vector potential $a_0 = 100$. Compared to a single pulse, we further observe higher polarization of the accelerated bunch.
The characteristics of a MeV ion source driven by superintense, ultrashort laser pulses with circular polarization are studied by means of particle-in-cell simulations. Predicted features include high efficiency, large ion density, low divergence and the possibility of femtosecond duration. A comparison with the case of linearly polarized pulses is made.

The radiation pressure acceleration regime of laser ion acceleration requires high intensity laser pulses to function efficiently. Moreover the foil should be opaque for incident radiation during the interaction to ensure maximum momentum transfer from the pulse to the foil, which requires proper matching of the target to the laser pulse. However, in the ultrarelativistic regime, this leads to large acceleration distances, over which the high laser intensity for a Gaussian laser pulse must be maintained. It is shown that proper tailoring of the laser pulse profile can significantly reduce the …
We consider the Directed Coulomb Explosion regime of ion acceleration from ultra-thin double layer (high Z/low Z) mass limited targets. In this regime the laser pulse evacuated the electrons from the irradiated spot and accelerates the remaining ion core in the direction of the laser pulse propagation. Then the moving ion core explodes due to the excess of positive charge forming a moving charge separation field that accelerates protons from the second layer. The utilization of the mass limited targets increases the effectiveness of the acceleration. It is also shown that different parameters …
A new regime is described for Radiation Pressure Acceleration of a thin foil by an intense laser beam of above 10^20 W/cm^2. Highly monoenergetic proton beams extending to GeV energies can be produced with very high efficiency using circularly polarized light. The proton beams have a very small divergence angle (less than 4 degrees). This new method allows the construction of ultra-compact proton and ion accelerators with ultra-short particle bursts.
We propose a new approach based on an all-optical set-up for generating relativistic polarized electron beams via vortex Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser-driven wakefield acceleration. Using a pre-polarized gas target, we find that the topology of the vortex wakefield resolves the depolarization issue of the injected electrons. In full three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, incorporating the spin dynamics via the Thomas-Bargmann Michel Telegdi equation, the LG laser preserves the electron spin polarization by more than 80% at high beam charge and flux. The method releases the limit on bea…
Energetic spin-polarized positrons are extremely demanded for forefront researches, such as $e^- e^+$ collider physics, but making compact positron sources is still very challenging. Here we put forward an efficient scheme of trapping and acceleration of polarized positrons in plasma wakefields. Seed electrons colliding with a bichromatic laser create polarized $γ$ photons which then split into $e^- e^+$ pairs via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process with an average (partial) positron polarization above 30\% (70\%). Over 70\% positrons are trapped and accelerated in recovered wakefields driven by a…
It is shown that well collimated mono-energetic ion beams with a large particle number can be generated in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime by using an elliptically polarized laser pulse with appropriate theoretically determined laser polarization ratio. Due to the $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect, the double-layer charge separation region is imbued with hot electrons that prevent ion pileup, thus suppressing the double-layer oscillations. The proposed mechanism is well confirmed by Particle-in-Cell simulations, and after suppressing the longitudinal double-layer oscillations,…
Ion beams generated with ultra-intense lasers-plasma accelerators hold promises to provide compact and affordable beams of relativistic ions. One of the most efficient acceleration setups was demonstrated to be direct acceleration by the laser's radiation pressure. Due to plasma instabilities developing in the ultra-thin foils required for radiation pressure acceleration, however, it is challenging to maintain stable acceleration over long distances. Recent studies demonstrated, on the other hand, that specially tailored laser pulses can shorten the required acceleration distance suppressing t…
Propagation of relativistically intense azimuthally or radially polarized laser pulses (RPP) in underdense plasmas is demonstrated to be unstable, via 3D particle-in-cell simulation and disregarding the Kerr non-linearity. Strong pulse filamentation occurs for RPP in transversely uniform plasma with an increment, $Γ$, close to the well-known one depending on acceleration, $α$, and modulated density gradient length, $L$, as $Γ\approx (α/L)^{1/2}$. In deep plasma channels the instability vanishes. Electron self-injection and acceleration by the resulting laser pulse wake is explored.
The production of polarized proton beams with multi-GeV energies in ultra-intense laser interaction with targets is studied with three-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations. A near-critical density plasma target with pre-polarized proton and tritium ions is considered for the proton acceleration. The pre-polarized protons are initially accelerated by laser radiation pressure before injection and further acceleration in a bubble-like wakefield. The temporal dynamics of proton polarization is tracked via the T-BMT equation, and it is found that the proton polarization state can be altered bot…
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results of sustained acceleration of electron-positron (e+e-) plasmas by comoving electromagnetic (EM) pulses are presented. When a thin slab of overdense e+e- plasma is irradiated with linear-polarized ultra-intense short laser pulses from both sides, the pulses are transmitted when the plasma is compressed to thinner than ~ 2 relativistic skin depths. A fraction of the plasma is then captured and efficiently accelerated by self-induced JxB forces. For 1 micron laser and 1021Wcm-2 intensity, the maximum energy exceeds GeV in a picosecond.
It is shown that the transverse Rayleigh Taylor like instability can be well stabilized by using elliptically polarized laser in the hole boring radiation pressure acceleration regime. The $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect of the laser will thermalize the local electrons and support a transverse diffusion mechanism of the ions, resulting in the stabilization of the short wavelength perturbations, which is quite similar to the ablative Rayleigh Taylor instability in the initial confinement fusion research. The proper range of polarization ratio is obtained from a theoretical model for the given laser…
Interaction of axisymmetrically-polarized (radially or azimuthally-polarized), relativistically intense laser pulses (ALP) with under-dense plasma is shown experimentally to be different from the interaction of conventional Gaussian pulses. The difference is clearly observed in distinct spectra of scattered laser light as well as in appearance of a strong side emission of second harmonic in the vicinity of focus spot. According 3D particle-in-cell simulations, this is a result of instability in the propagation of ALP in under-dense plasma. Laser wakefield acceleration of electrons by ALP, ther…
Particle acceleration using ultraintense, ultrashort laser pulses is one of the most attractive topics in relativistic laser-plasma research. We report proton/ion acceleration in the intensity range of 5x1019 W/cm2 to 3.3x1020 W/cm2 by irradiating linearly polarized, 30-fs, 1-PW laser pulses on 10- to 100-nm-thick polymer targets. The proton energy scaling with respect to the intensity and target thickness was examined. The experiments demonstrated, for the first time with linearly polarized light, a transition from the target normal sheath acceleration to radiation pressure acceleration and s…
It is shown that the transverse Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability in the hole boring radiation pressure acceleration can be suppressed by using elliptically polarized (EP) laser. A moderate ${J}\times{B}$ heating of the EP laser will thermalize the local electrons, which leads to the transverse diffusion of ions, suppressing the short wavelength perturbations of RT instability. A proper condition of polarization ratio is obtained analytically for the given laser intensity and plasma density. The idea is confirmed by two dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, showing that the ion beam dr…
We review recent PIC simulation results which show that double-sided irradiation of a thin over- dense plasma slab by ultra-intense laser pulses from both sides can lead to sustained comoving acceleration of surface electrons to energies much higher than the conventional ponderomotive limit. The acceleration stops only when the electrons drift transversely out of the laser beam. We show latest 2.5D results of parameter studies based on finite laser spot size and discuss future laser experiments that can be used to test these results.
Non-linear Breit-Wheeler $e^+e^-$ pair production and its crossing channel - the non-linear Compton process - in the multi-photon regime are analyzed for linearly and circularly polarized short laser pulses. The contribution of multi-photon processes to total cross sections is determined and we also show that (i) the azimuthal angular distributions of outgoing electrons in these processes differ on a qualitative level, and (ii) they depend on the polarization properties of the pulses. A finite carrier envelope phase (CEP) leads to a non-trivial non-monotonic behavior of the azimuthal angle dis…
Electron acceleration has been optimized based on 3D PIC simulations of a short laser pulse interacting with low-density plasma targets to find the pulse propagation regime that maximizes the charge of high-energy electron bunches. This regime corresponds to laser pulse propagation in a self-trapping mode where the diffraction divergence is balanced by the relativistic nonlinearity such that relativistic self-focusing on the axis does not happen and the laser beam radius stays unchanged during pulse propagation in a plasma over many Rayleigh lengths. Such a regime occurs for a near-critical de…
We propose a method to generate femtosecond, relativistic and high-charge electron bunches using few-cycle and tightly focused radially polarized laser pulses. In this scheme, the incident laser pulse reflects off an overdense plasma that injects electrons into the reflected pulse. Particle-In-Cell simulations show that the plasma injects electrons ideally, resulting in a dramatic increase of charge and energy of the accelerated electron bunch in comparison to previous methods. This method can be used to generate femtosecond pC bunches with energies in the 1-10 MeV range using realistic laser …
Laser-solid interaction can lead to the acceleration of protons to tens of MeV. Here, we show that a strong enhancement of this acceleration can be achieved by splitting the laser pulse to two parts of equal energy and opposite incidence angles. Through the use of two- and three-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations, we find that the multi-pulse interaction leads to a standing wave pattern at the front side of the target, with an enhanced electric field and a substantial modification of the hot electron generation process. This in turn leads to significant improvement of the proton spectra,…
In the ion acceleration by radiation pressure a transverse inhomogeneity of the electromagnetic pulse results in the displacement of the irradiated target in the off-axis direction limiting achievable ion energy. This effect is described analytically within the framework of the thin foil target model and with the particle-in-cell simulations showing that the maximum energy of accelerated ions decreases while the displacement from the axis of the target initial position increases. The results obtained can be applied for optimization of the ion acceleration by the laser radiation pressure with t…
A regime of multi-cascade proton acceleration in the interaction of $10^{21}-10^{22}$ W/cm$^2$ laser pulse with a structured target is proposed. The regime is based on the electron charge displacement under the action of laser ponderomotive force and on the effect of relativistically induced slab transparency which allows to realize idea of multi-cascade acceleration. It is shown that a target comprising several properly spaced apart thin foils can optimize the acceleration process and give at the output quasi-monoenergetic beams of protons with energies up to hundreds of MeV with energy sprea…
Propagation of short and ultra-intense laser pulses in a semi-infinite space of overdense hydrogen plasma is analyzed via fully-relativistic, real geometry particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including radiation friction. The relativistic transparency and hole-boring regimes are found to be sensitive to the transverse plasma field, backward light reflection, and laser pulse filamentation. For laser intensities approaching $I\sim10^{24}$ W/cm$^2$ the direct laser acceleration of protons, along with ion Coulomb explosion, results in their injection into the acceleration phase of the compressed el…
Attosecond bursts of coherent synchrotron-like radiation are found when driving ultrathin relativistic electron disks in a quasi-one-dimensional regime of wakefield acceleration, in which the laser waist is larger than the wake wavelength. The disks of overcritical density shrink radially due to the focusing wake fields, thus providing the transverse currents for the emission of an intense, radially polarized, half-cycle pulse of about 100 attoseconds in duration. The electromagnetic pulse first focuses to a peak intensity 10 times larger ($7\times10^{20}\rm W/cm^2$) than the driving pulse and…
We demonstrate in this research the quasi-monoenergetic electron and proton acceleration through three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of short petawatt circular polarized laser pulse interactions with near critical density hydrogen target. We numerically show that under controlled choice of laser and target parameters, the high energy electrons and protons can be illustrated in experiment at advanced high power laser facilities eg ELI - ALPS. We detailed the microphysics involved in the acceleration mechanism, which required investigating the role of plasma density gradients, plasma …
The use of ultrathin solid foils offers optimal conditions for accelerating protons from laser-matter interactions. When the target is thin enough that relativistic self-induced transparency (RSIT) sets in, all of the target electrons get heated to high energies by the laser, which maximizes the accelerating electric field and therefore the final ion energy. In this work, we first investigate how ion acceleration by ultraintense femtosecond laser pulses in transparent CH$_2$ solid foils is modified when turning from normal to oblique ($45^\circ$) incidence. Due to stronger electron heating, we…
We present an analytical theory that reveals the importance of the longitudinal laser electric field in the resonant acceleration of relativistic electrons by the tightly confined laser beam. It is shown that this field always counterworks to the laser transverse component and effectively decreases the final energy gain of electrons through direct laser acceleration mechanism. This effect is demonstrated by carrying out the particle-in-cell simulations in the setup where the wakefield in the plasma bubble is compensated by the longitudinal laser electric field experienced by the accelerated el…
Theoretical study of heavy ion acceleration from ultrathin (<200 nm) gold foils irradiated by a short pulse laser is presented. Using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations the time history of the laser bullet is examined in order to get insight into the laser energy deposition and ion acceleration process. For laser pulses with intensity , duration 32 fs, focal spot size 5 mkm and energy 27 Joules the calculated reflection, transmission and coupling coefficients from a 20 nm foil are 80 %, 5 % and 15 %, respectively. The conversion efficiency into gold ions is 8 %. Two highly collimated…
We present experimental studies on ion acceleration from ultra-thin diamond-like carbon (DLC) foils irradiated by ultra-high contrast laser pulses of energy 0.7 J focussed to peak intensities of 5*10^{19} W/cm^2. A reduction in electron heating is observed when the laser polarization is changed from linear to circular, leading to a pronounced peak in the fully ionized carbon spectrum at the optimum foil thickness of 5.3 nm. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations reveal, that those C^{6+} ions are for the first time dominantly accelerated in a phase-stable way by the laser radiation…
Particle accelerations by a 1D, EM, dispersive pulse in an external magnetic field are investigated. It is found that the well-known cyclotron resonance may be classified into three regimes as the length and/or the amplitude of the pulse are varied. Namely, as the pulse amplitude increases, the transit-time cyclotron-resonance acceleration [CRA] evolves to phase trapping, and reflect particles. The amplitude and wave dispersion as well as the pulse length strongly affect those accelerations. The interesting phenomena of quantization of resonance velocities in between the two regimes are also i…
Theoretical study of heavy ion acceleration from an ultrathin (20 nm) gold foil irradiated by sub-picosecond lasers is presented. Using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations we identified two highly efficient ion acceleration schemes. By varying the laser pulse duration we observed a transition from Radiation Pressure Acceleration to the Breakout Afterburner regime akin to light ions. The underlying physics and ion acceleration regimes are similar to that of light ions, however, nuances of the acceleration process make the acceleration of heavy ions more challenging. Two laser systems a…
We propose new nanotargets as nano-layered flat-top cone targets to be used for future laser-ion acceleration experiments at ELI-NP. We study their behaviour at the interaction with an ultra-high intensity laser pulse by performing Particle-In-Cell simulations. We analyze spatio-temporal the electromagnetic field based on the finite-difference time-domain method for a complementary description. We find the optimum diameter of the nanospheres and the proper nano-flat-top foil thickness for which one can obtain monoenergetic beams of very energetic ions with low angular divergence.
In this work, we will show through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that direct laser acceleration in laser a wakefield accelerator can generate sub-femtosecond electron bunches. Two simulations were done with two laser pulse durations, such that the shortest laser pulse occupies only a fraction of the first bubble, whereas the longer pulse fills the entire first bubble. In the latter case, as the trapped electrons moved forward and interacted with the high intensity region of the laser pulse, micro-bunching occurred naturally, producing 0.5 fs electron bunches. This is not obser…
An electron irradiated by a linearly polarized relativistic intensity laser pulse in a cylindrical plasma channel can gain significant energy from the pulse. The laser electric and magnetic fields drive electron oscillations in a plane making it natural to expect the electron trajectory to be flat. We show that strong modulations of the relativistic $γ$-factor associated with the energy enhancement cause the free oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the driven motion to become unstable. As a consequence, out of plane displacements grow to become comparable to the amplitude of the driven …
A theoretical study of laser and plasma based electron acceleration is presented. An effective model has been used, in which the presence of an underdense plasma has been taken account via its index of refraction $n_{m}$. In the confines of this model, the basic phenomena can be studied by numerically solving the classical relativistic equations of motion. The key idea of this paper is the application of chirped, bichromatic laser fields. We investigated the advantages and disadvantages of mixing the second harmonic to the original $λ= 800 \, \mathrm{nm}$ wavelength pulse. We performed calcula…
High-energy spin-polarized electron, positron, and $γ$-photon beams have many significant applications in the study of material properties, nuclear structure, particle physics, and high-energy astrophysics. Thus, efficient production of such polarized beams attracts a broad spectrum of research interests. This is driven mainly by the rapid advancements in ultrashort and ultraintense laser technology. Currently available laser pulses can achieve peak intensities in the range of $10^{22}-10^{23}$ Wcm$^{-2}$, with pulse durations of tens of femtoseconds. The dynamics of particles in laser fields o…
We investigate the target normal sheath acceleration of protons in thin aluminum targets irradiated at relativistic intensity by two time-separated ultrashort (35 fs) laser pulses. For identical laser pulses and target thicknesses of 3 and 6 $μ$m, we observe experimentally that the second pulse boosts the maximum energy and charge of the proton beam produced by the first pulse for time delays below $\sim0.6-1$ ps. By using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations we examine the variation of the proton energy spectra with respect to the time-delay between the two pulses. We demonstrate that…
We demonstrate that hybrid laser wakefield and direct acceleration (LWDA) can be significantly improved by using two laser pulses with different polarizations or frequencies. The improvement entails higher energy and charge of the accelerated electrons, as well as weaker sensitivity to the time delay between the leading (pump) pulse responsible for generating the wakefield, and the trailing laser pulse responsible for direct laser acceleration (DLA). When the two laser pulses have the same frequency, it is shown that it is advantageous to have their polarization states orthogonal to each other…
Generation of collimated, quasi-monoenergetic electron beams (peak energy ~17-22MeV, divergence ~10mrad, energy spread ~20%) by interaction of Ti:sapphire laser pulse of 200fs duration, focussed to an intensity of ~ 2.1x10^18 W/cm^2,with an under-dense (density~3.6x10^19 to ~1.1x10^20 cm-3) He gas-jet plasma was observed. Two stages of self-focusing of the laser pulse in the plasma were observed. Two groups of accelerated electrons were also observed associated with these stages of the channeling and is attributed to the betatron resonance acceleration mechanism. This is supported by 2D PIC si…
We present experimental results of vacuum laser acceleration (VLA) of electrons using radially polarized laser pulses interacting with a plasma mirror. Tightly focused radially polarized laser pulses have been proposed for electron acceleration because of their strong longitudinal electric field, making them ideal for VLA. However, experimental results have been limited until now because injecting electrons into the laser field has remained a considerable challenge. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that using a plasma mirror as an injector solves this problem and permits to inject electrons…
Generation of high intensity attopulses is investigated in cylindrical geometry by using 3D particle-in-cell plasma simulation code. Due to the rotation symmetric target, a circularly polarized laser pulse is considered propagating on the axis of a hollow cone-like target. The large incidence angle and constant ponderomotive pressure leads to nano-bunching of relativistic electrons responsible for the laser-driven synchrotron emission. A numerical method is developed to find the source and direction of the coherent radiation that is responsible for the existence of attopulses. The intensity mo…
The dynamics of electric field generation and radial acceleration of ions by a laser pulse of relativistic intensity propagating in an underdense plasma has been investigated using an one-dimensional electrostatic, ponderomotive model developed to interpret experimental measurements of electric fields [S. Kar et al, New J. Phys. *9*, 402 (2007)]. Ions are spatially focused at the edge of the charge-displacement channel, leading to hydrodynamical breaking, which in turns causes the heating of electrons and an "echo" effect in the electric field. The onset of complete electron depletion in the c…
The influence of laser frequency on laser-driven ion acceleration is investigated by means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When ultrashort intense laser pulse at higher harmonic frequency irradiates a thin solid foil, the target may become relativistically transparent for significantly lower laser pulse intensity compared to irradiation at fundamental laser frequency. The relativistically induced transparency results in an enhanced heating of hot electrons as well as increased maximum energies of accelerated ions and their numbers. Our simulation results have shown the increas…
Dynamics of self-injected electron bunches has been numerically simulated in blowout regime at self-consistent change of electron bunch acceleration by plasma wakefield, excited by a laser pulse, to additional their acceleration by wakefield, excited by self-injected bunch. Advantages of acceleration by pulse train and bunch self-cleaning have been considered.
Radiation reaction (RR) effects on the acceleration of a thin plasma foil by a superintense laser pulse in the radiation pressure dominated regime are investigated theoretically. A simple suitable approximation of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for the RR force and a novel leapfrog pusher for its inclusion in particle-in-cell simulations are provided. Simulations for both linear and circular polarization of the laser pulse are performed and compared. It is found that at intensities exceeding $10^{23} \Wcm$ the radiation reaction force strongly affects the dynamics for a linearly polarized laser …
The creation of well-thermalized, hot and dense plasmas is attractive for warm dense matter studies. We investigate collisionally induced energy absorption of an ultraintense and ultrashort laser pulse in a solid copper target using particle-in-cell simulations. We find that, upon irradiation by a $2\times10^{20}{\rm\,W\,cm^{-2}}$ intensity, $60{\rm\,fs}$ duration, circularly polarized laser pulse, the electrons in the collisional simulation rapidly reach a well-thermalized distribution with ${\sim}3.5{\rm\,keV}$ temperature, while in the collisionless simulation the absorption is several orde…
Generation of ultrarelativistic polarized positrons during interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating two-color petawatt laser pulse is investigated theoretically. Our Monte Carlo simulation based on a semi-classical model, incorporates photon emissions and pair productions, using spin-resolved quantum probabilities in the local constant field approximation, and describes the polarization of electrons and positrons for the pair production and photon emission processes, as well as the classical spin precession in-between. The main reason of the polarization is s…
