Background: Leaning redundant and complementary relationships is a critical step in the human visual system. Inspired by the infrared cognition ability of crotalinae animals, we design a joint convolution auto-encoder (JCAE) network for infrared and visible image fusion. Methods: Our key insight is to feed infrared and visible pair images into the network simultaneously and separate an encoder stream into two private branches and one common branch, the private branch works for complementary features learning and the common branch does for redundant features learning. We also build two fusion rules to integrate redundant and complementary features into their fused feature which are then fed into the decoder layer to produce the final fused image. We detail the structure, fusion rule and explain its multi-task loss function. Results: Our JCAE network achieves good results in terms of both subjective effect and objective evaluation metrics.

In this paper, an automatic method is proposed to perform image registration in visible and infrared pair of video sequences for multiple targets. In multimodal image analysis like image fusion systems, color and IR sensors are placed close to each other and capture a same scene simultaneously, but the videos are not properly aligned by default because of different fields of view, image capturing information, working principle and other camera specifications. Because the scenes are usually not planar, alignment needs to be performed continuously by extracting relevant common information. In th…

Image restoration, including image denoising, super resolution, inpainting, and so on, is a well-studied problem in computer vision and image processing, as well as a test bed for low-level image modeling algorithms. In this work, we propose a very deep fully convolutional auto-encoder network for image restoration, which is a encoding-decoding framework with symmetric convolutional-deconvolutional layers. In other words, the network is composed of multiple layers of convolution and de-convolution operators, learning end-to-end mappings from corrupted images to the original ones. The convoluti…

Infrared and visible image fusion (IVIF) expects to obtain images that retain thermal radiation information from infrared images and texture details from visible images. In this paper, a model-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model, referred to as Algorithm Unrolling Image Fusion (AUIF), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of traditional CNN-based IVIF models. The proposed AUIF model starts with the iterative formulas of two traditional optimization models, which are established to accomplish two-scale decomposition, i.e., separating low-frequency base information and high-frequen…

In computer vision and image processing tasks, image fusion has evolved into an attractive research field. However, recent existing image fusion methods are mostly built on pixel-level operations, which may produce unacceptable artifacts and are time-consuming. In this paper, a symmetric encoder-decoder with a residual block (SEDR) for infrared and visible image fusion is proposed. For the training stage, the SEDR network is trained with a new dataset to obtain a fixed feature extractor. For the fusion stage, first, the trained model is utilized to extract the intermediate features and compens…

Image decomposition is a crucial subject in the field of image processing. It can extract salient features from the source image. We propose a new image decomposition method based on convolutional neural network. This method can be applied to many image processing tasks. In this paper, we apply the image decomposition network to the image fusion task. We input infrared image and visible light image and decompose them into three high-frequency feature images and a low-frequency feature image respectively. The two sets of feature images are fused using a specific fusion strategy to obtain fusion…

Image fusion is a significant problem in many fields including digital photography, computational imaging and remote sensing, to name but a few. Recently, deep learning has emerged as an important tool for image fusion. This paper presents three deep convolutional sparse coding (CSC) networks for three kinds of image fusion tasks (i.e., infrared and visible image fusion, multi-exposure image fusion, and multi-modal image fusion). The CSC model and the iterative shrinkage and thresholding algorithm are generalized into dictionary convolution units. As a result, all hyper-parameters are learned …

The existing generative adversarial fusion methods generally concatenate source images and extract local features through convolution operation, without considering their global characteristics, which tends to produce an unbalanced result and is biased towards the infrared image or visible image. Toward this end, we propose a novel end-to-end mode based on generative adversarial training to achieve better fusion balance, termed as \textit{interactive compensatory attention fusion network} (ICAFusion). In particular, in the generator, we construct a multi-level encoder-decoder network with a tr…

We propose a novel approach for generating high quality visible-like images from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images using Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architectures. The proposed approach is based on a cascaded network of convolutional neural nets (CNNs) for despeckling and image colorization. The cascaded structure results in faster convergence during training and produces high quality visible images from the corresponding SAR images. Experimental results on both simulated and real SAR images show that the proposed method can produce visible-like images better co…
This paper reports a visible and thermal drone monitoring system that integrates deep-learning-based detection and tracking modules. The biggest challenge in adopting deep learning methods for drone detection is the paucity of training drone images especially thermal drone images. To address this issue, we develop two data augmentation techniques. One is a model-based drone augmentation technique that automatically generates visible drone images with a bounding box label on the drone's location. The other is exploiting an adversarial data augmentation methodology to create thermal drone images…

The existing deep learning fusion methods mainly concentrate on the convolutional neural networks, and few attempts are made with transformer. Meanwhile, the convolutional operation is a content-independent interaction between the image and convolution kernel, which may lose some important contexts and further limit fusion performance. Towards this end, we present a simple and strong fusion baseline for infrared and visible images, namely\textit{ Residual Swin Transformer Fusion Network}, termed as SwinFuse. Our SwinFuse includes three parts: the global feature extraction, fusion layer and fea…
In this paper, we present a novel deep learning architecture for infrared and visible images fusion problem. In contrast to conventional convolutional networks, our encoding network is combined by convolutional layers, fusion layer and dense block in which the output of each layer is connected to every other layer. We attempt to use this architecture to get more useful features from source images in encoding process. And two fusion layers(fusion strategies) are designed to fuse these features. Finally, the fused image is reconstructed by decoder. Compared with existing fusion methods, the prop…

We tackle the problem of using 3D information in convolutional neural networks for down-stream recognition tasks. Using depth as an additional channel alongside the RGB input has the scale variance problem present in image convolution based approaches. On the other hand, 3D convolution wastes a large amount of memory on mostly unoccupied 3D space, which consists of only the surface visible to the sensor. Instead, we propose SurfConv, which "slides" compact 2D filters along the visible 3D surface. SurfConv is formulated as a simple depth-aware multi-scale 2D convolution, through a new Data-Driv…

For both visible and infrared images have their own advantages and disadvantages, RGBT tracking has attracted more and more attention. The key points of RGBT tracking lie in feature extraction and feature fusion of visible and infrared images. Current RGBT tracking methods mostly pay attention to both individual features (features extracted from images of a single camera) and common features (features extracted and fused from an RGB camera and a thermal camera), while pay less attention to the different and dynamic contributions of individual features and common features for different sequence…

Polarimetric thermal to visible face verification entails matching two images that contain significant domain differences. Several recent approaches have attempted to synthesize visible faces from thermal images for cross-modal matching. In this paper, we take a different approach in which rather than focusing only on synthesizing visible faces from thermal faces, we also propose to synthesize thermal faces from visible faces. Our intuition is based on the fact that thermal images also contain some discriminative information about the person for verification. Deep features from a pre-trained C…
In action understanding in indoor, we have to recognize human pose and action considering privacy. Although camera images can be used for highly accurate human action recognition, camera images do not preserve privacy. Therefore, we propose a new task for human instance segmentation from invisible information, especially airborne ultrasound, for action recognition. To perform instance segmentation from invisible information, we first convert sound waves to reflected sound directional images (sound images). Although the sound images can roughly identify the location of a person, the detailed sh…

Inspired by the global interaction power, we use the transformer technique to learn the effective global fusion relat…

In this paper, we propose a method called Convolutional Neural Network-Markov Random Field (CNN-MRF) to estimate the crowd count in a still image. We first divide the dense crowd visible image into overlapping patches and then use a deep convolutional neural network to extract features from each patch image, followed by a fully connected neural network to regress the local patch crowd count. Since the local patches have overlapping portions, the crowd count of the adjacent patches has a high correlation. We use this correlation and the Markov random field to smooth the counting results of the …

The autonomous car must recognize the driving environment quickly for safe driving. As the Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) sensor is widely used in the autonomous car, fast semantic segmentation of LiDAR point cloud, which is the point-wise classification of the point cloud within the sensor framerate, has attracted attention in recognition of the driving environment. This paper introduces a new approach to automatically quantify the severity of knee OA using X-ray images. We introduce a new approach to automatically detect the knee joints using a fully convolutional neural network (FCN). We train convolutional neural networks (CNN) from scratch to automatically quantify the knee OA severity optimizing a weighted ratio of two loss functions: categorical cross-entropy and mean-squared loss. Infrared (IR) imaging has the potential to enable more robust action recognition systems compared to visible spectrum cameras due to lower sensitivity to lighting conditions and appearance variability. While the action recognition task on videos collected from visible spectrum imaging has received much attention, action recognition in IR videos is significantly less explored. In this work, we propose a novel two-stream 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture by introducing the discriminative c…
Our demonstration shows a system that estimates internal body structures from 3D surface models using deep convolutional neural networks trained on CT (computed tomography) images of the human body. Much of the recent progress made in image classification research can be credited to training procedure refinements, such as changes in data augmentations and optimization methods. In the literature, however, most refinements are either briefly mentioned as implementation details or only visible in source code. In this paper, we will examine a collection of such refinements and empirically evaluate their impact on the final model accuracy through ablation study. We will show that, by combining these refinements together, we are able to improve various CNN models significantly. For example, we …

In skeleton-based action recognition, Graph Convolutional Networks model human skeletal joints as vertices and connect them through an adjacency matrix, which can be seen as a local attention mask. However, in most existing Graph Convolutional Networks, the local attention mask is defined based on natural connections of human skeleton joints and ignores the dynamic relations for example between head, hands and feet joints. In addition, the attention mechanism has been proven effective in Natural Language Processing and image description, which is rarely investigated in existing methods. In thi…

Motivated by these, in this paper, we propose a large margin structured convolution…
