While there are high-quality software frameworks for information retrieval experimentation, they do not explicitly support cross-language information retrieval (CLIR). To fill this gap, we have created Patapsco, a Python CLIR framework. This framework specifically addresses the complexity that comes with running experiments in multiple languages. Patapsco is designed to be extensible to many language pairs, to be scalable to large document collections, and to support reproducible experiments driven by a configuration file. We include Patapsco results on standard CLIR collections using multiple settings.
Over the past years, deep learning methods allowed for new state-of-the-art results in ad-hoc information retrieval. However such methods usually require large amounts of annotated data to be effective. Since most standard ad-hoc information retrieval datasets publicly available for academic research (e.g. Robust04, ClueWeb09) have at most 250 annotated queries, the recent deep learning models for information retrieval perform poorly on these datasets. These models (e.g. DUET, Conv-KNRM) are trained and evaluated on data collected from commercial search engines not publicly available for acade…
Pyserini is an easy-to-use Python toolkit that supports replicable IR research by providing effective first-stage retrieval in a multi-stage ranking architecture. Our toolkit is self-contained as a standard Python package and comes with queries, relevance judgments, pre-built indexes, and evaluation scripts for many commonly used IR test collections. We aim to support, out of the box, the entire research lifecycle of efforts aimed at improving ranking with modern neural approaches. In particular, Pyserini supports sparse retrieval (e.g., BM25 scoring using bag-of-words representations), dense …
The advent of deep machine learning platforms such as Tensorflow and Pytorch, developed in expressive high-level languages such as Python, have allowed more expressive representations of deep neural network architectures. We argue that such a powerful formalism is missing in information retrieval (IR), and propose a framework called PyTerrier that allows advanced retrieval pipelines to be expressed, and evaluated, in a declarative manner close to their conceptual design. Like the aforementioned frameworks that compile deep learning experiments into primitive GPU operations, our framework targe…
Despite advances in neural machine translation, cross-lingual retrieval tasks in which queries and documents live in different natural language spaces remain challenging. Although neural translation models may provide an intuitive approach to tackle the cross-lingual problem, their resource-consuming training and advanced model structures may complicate the overall retrieval pipeline and reduce users engagement. In this paper, we build our end-to-end Cross-Lingual Arabic Information REtrieval (CLAIRE) system based on the cross-lingual word embedding where searchers are assumed to have a passab…

In recent years, hashing has attracted more and more attention owing to its superior capacity of low storage cost and high query efficiency in large-scale cross-modal retrieval. Benefiting from deep leaning, continuously compelling results in cross-modal retrieval community have been achieved. However, existing deep cross-modal hashing methods either rely on amounts of labeled information or have no ability to learn an accuracy correlation between different modalities. In this paper, we proposed Unsupervised coupled Cycle generative adversarial Hashing networks (UCH), for cross-modal retrieval…
Given the benefits of its low storage requirements and high retrieval efficiency, hashing has recently received increasing attention. In particular,cross-modal hashing has been widely and successfully used in multimedia similarity search applications. However, almost all existing methods employing cross-modal hashing cannot obtain powerful hash codes due to their ignoring the relative similarity between heterogeneous data that contains richer semantic information, leading to unsatisfactory retrieval performance. In this paper, we propose a triplet-based deep hashing (TDH) network for cross-mod…
Cross-modal retrieval is to utilize one modality as a query to retrieve data from another modality, which has become a popular topic in information retrieval, machine learning, and database. How to effectively measure the similarity between different modality data is the major challenge of cross-modal retrieval. Although several reasearch works have calculated the correlation between different modality data via learning a common subspace representation, the encoder's ability to extract features from multi-modal information is not satisfactory. In this paper, we present a novel variational auto…
Cross-modality retrieval encompasses retrieval tasks where the fetched items are of a different type than the search query, e.g., retrieving pictures relevant to a given text query. The state-of-the-art approach to cross-modality retrieval relies on learning a joint embedding space of the two modalities, where items from either modality are retrieved using nearest-neighbor search. In this work, we introduce a neural network layer based on Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) that learns better embedding spaces by analytically computing projections that maximize correlation. In contrast to prev…
In this paper, we introduce the approach behind our submission for the MIRACL challenge, a WSDM 2023 Cup competition that centers on ad-hoc retrieval across 18 diverse languages. Our solution contains two neural-based models. The first model is a bi-encoder re-ranker, on which we apply a cross-lingual distillation technique to transfer ranking knowledge from English to the target language space. The second model is a cross-encoder re-ranker trained on multilingual retrieval data generated using neural machine translation. We further fine-tune both models using MIRACL training data and ensemble…

Latte (for LATent Tensor Evaluation) is a Python library for evaluation of latent-based generative models in the fields of disentanglement learning and controllable generation. Latte is compatible with both PyTorch and TensorFlow/Keras, and provides both functional and modular APIs that can be easily extended to support other deep learning frameworks. Using NumPy-based and framework-agnostic implementation, Latte ensures reproducible, consistent, and deterministic metric calculations regardless of the deep learning framework of choice.
A cross-modal retrieval process is to use a query in one modality to obtain relevant data in another modality. The challenging issue of cross-modal retrieval lies in bridging the heterogeneous gap for similarity computation, which has been broadly discussed in image-text, audio-text, and video-text cross-modal multimedia data mining and retrieval. However, the gap in temporal structures of different data modalities is not well addressed due to the lack of alignment relationship between temporal cross-modal structures. Our research focuses on learning the correlation between different modalitie…

Recent work has shown the surprising ability of multi-lingual BERT to serve as a zero-shot cross-lingual transfer model for a number of language processing tasks. We combine this finding with a similarly-recently proposal on sentence-level relevance modeling for document retrieval to demonstrate the ability of multi-lingual BERT to transfer models of relevance across languages. Experiments on test collections in five different languages from diverse language families (Chinese, Arabic, French, Hindi, and Bengali) show that models trained with English data improve ranking quality, without any sp…

Pretrained language models have improved effectiveness on numerous tasks, including ad-hoc retrieval. Recent work has shown that continuing to pretrain a language model with auxiliary objectives before fine-tuning on the retrieval task can further improve retrieval effectiveness. Unlike monolingual retrieval, designing an appropriate auxiliary task for cross-language mappings is challenging. To address this challenge, we use comparable Wikipedia articles in different languages to further pretrain off-the-shelf multilingual pretrained models before fine-tuning on the retrieval task. We show tha…
Benefiting from transformer-based pre-trained language models, neural ranking models have made significant progress. More recently, the advent of multilingual pre-trained language models provides great support for designing neural cross-lingual retrieval models. However, due to unbalanced pre-training data in different languages, multilingual language models have already shown a performance gap between high and low-resource languages in many downstream tasks. And cross-lingual retrieval models built on such pre-trained models can inherit language bias, leading to suboptimal result for low-reso…

Dense retrieval has shown great success in passage ranking in English. However, its effectiveness in document retrieval for non-English languages remains unexplored due to the limitation in training resources. In this work, we explore different transfer techniques for document ranking from English annotations to multiple non-English languages. Our experiments on the test collections in six languages (Chinese, Arabic, French, Hindi, Bengali, Spanish) from diverse language families reveal that zero-shot model-based transfer using mBERT improves the search quality in non-English mono-lingual retr…

The advent of transformer-based models such as BERT has led to the rise of neural ranking models. These models have improved the effectiveness of retrieval systems well beyond that of lexical term matching models such as BM25. While monolingual retrieval tasks have benefited from large-scale training collections such as MS MARCO and advances in neural architectures, cross-language retrieval tasks have fallen behind these advancements. This paper introduces ColBERT-X, a generalization of the ColBERT multi-representation dense retrieval model that uses the XLM-RoBERTa (XLM-R) encoder to support …
Cross-lingual document search is an information retrieval task in which the queries' language differs from the documents' language. In this paper, we study the instability of neural document search models and propose a novel end-to-end robust framework that achieves improved performance in cross-lingual search with different documents' languages. This framework includes a novel measure of the relevance, smooth cosine similarity, between queries and documents, and a novel loss function, Smooth Ordinal Search Loss, as the objective. We further provide theoretical guarantee on the generalization …

A popular approach to creating a zero-shot cross-language retrieval model is to substitute a monolingual pretrained language model in the retrieval model with a multilingual pretrained language model such as Multilingual BERT. This multilingual model is fined-tuned to the retrieval task with monolingual data such as English MS MARCO using the same training recipe as the monolingual retrieval model used. However, such transferred models suffer from mismatches in the languages of the input text during training and inference. In this work, we propose transferring monolingual retrieval models usin…
Cross-modal retrieval aims to retrieve data in one modality by a query in another modality, which has been a very interesting research issue in the field of multimedia, information retrieval, and computer vision, and database. Most existing works focus on cross-modal retrieval between text-image, text-video, and lyrics-audio.Little research addresses cross-modal retrieval between audio and video due to limited audio-video paired datasets and semantic information. The main challenge of audio-visual cross-modal retrieval task focuses on learning joint embeddings from a shared subspace for comput…
There has been a rapid growth of digitally available music data, including audio recordings, digitized images of sheet music, album covers and liner notes, and video clips. This huge amount of data calls for retrieval strategies that allow users to explore large music collections in a convenient way. More precisely, there is a need for cross-modal retrieval algorithms that, given a query in one modality (e.g., a short audio excerpt), find corresponding information and entities in other modalities (e.g., the name of the piece and the sheet music). This goes beyond exact audio identification and…
In this industry talk at ECIR 2022, we illustrate how we approach the main challenges from large scale cross-domain content-based image retrieval using a cascade method and a combination of our visual search and classification capabilities. Specifically, we present a system that is able to handle the scale of the data for e-commerce usage and the cross-domain nature of the query and gallery image pools. We showcase the approach applied in real-world e-commerce snap and search use case and its impact on ranking and latency performance.

Cross-modal retrieval aims to search for data with similar semantic meanings across different content modalities. However, cross-modal retrieval requires huge amounts of storage and retrieval time since it needs to process data in multiple modalities. Existing works focused on learning single-source compact features such as binary hash codes that preserve similarities between different modalities. In this work, we propose a jointly learned deep hashing and quantization network (HQ) for cross-modal retrieval. We simultaneously learn binary hash codes and quantization codes to preserve semantic …

Two key assumptions shape the usual view of ranked retrieval: (1) that the searcher can choose words for their query that might appear in the documents that they wish to see, and (2) that ranking retrieved documents will suffice because the searcher will be able to recognize those which they wished to find. When the documents to be searched are in a language not known by the searcher, neither assumption is true. In such cases, Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is needed. This chapter reviews the state of the art for CLIR and outlines some open research questions.

With the advancement in technology and the expansion of broadcasting, cross-media retrieval has gained much attention. It plays a significant role in big data applications and consists in searching and finding data from different types of media. In this paper, we provide a novel taxonomy according to the challenges faced by multi-modal deep learning approaches in solving cross-media retrieval, namely: representation, alignment, and translation. These challenges are evaluated on deep learning (DL) based methods, which are categorized into four main groups: 1) unsupervised methods, 2) supervised…

We address the problem of cross-modal information retrieval in the domain of remote sensing. In particular, we are interested in two application scenarios: i) cross-modal retrieval between panchromatic (PAN) and multi-spectral imagery, and ii) multi-label image retrieval between very high resolution (VHR) images and speech based label annotations. Notice that these multi-modal retrieval scenarios are more challenging than the traditional uni-modal retrieval approaches given the inherent differences in distributions between the modalities. However, with the growing availability of multi-source …
In the field of cross-modal retrieval, single encoder models tend to perform better than dual encoder models, but they suffer from high latency and low throughput. In this paper, we present a dual encoder model called BagFormer that utilizes a cross modal interaction mechanism to improve recall performance without sacrificing latency and throughput. BagFormer achieves this through the use of bag-wise interactions, which allow for the transformation of text to a more appropriate granularity and the incorporation of entity knowledge into the model. Our experiments demonstrate that BagFormer is a…

Cross-media retrieval is to return the results of various media types corresponding to the query of any media type. Existing researches generally focus on coarse-grained cross-media retrieval. When users submit an image of "Slaty-backed Gull" as a query, coarse-grained cross-media retrieval treats it as "Bird", so that users can only get the results of "Bird", which may include other bird species with similar appearance (image and video), descriptions (text) or sounds (audio), such as "Herring Gull". Such coarse-grained cross-media retrieval is not consistent with human lifestyle, where we gen…
