Dissipative dynamics of quantum systems can be classified topologically based on the correspondence between the Lindbladian in the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation and the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the Schrödinger equation. While general non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are classified into 38 symmetry classes, previous studies have shown that the Lindbladians are classified into 10 symmetry classes due to a physical constraint. In this work, however, we unveil a topological classification of Lindbladians based on shifted sublattice symmetry (SLS), which can increase the number of symmetry classes for the Lindbladians. We introduce shifted SLS so that the Lindbladian can retain this symmetry and take on the same role as SLS for the topological classification. For verification, we construct a model of a dissipative quantum system retaining shifted SLS and confirm the presence of edge states protected by shifted SLS. Moreover, the relationship between the presence of shifted SLS protected edge states and the dynamics of an observable quantity is also discussed.
We investigate theoretically the topological properties of dimerized quasi-one-dimensional (1D) lattice comprising of multi legs $(L)$ as well as multi sublattices $(R)$. The system has main and subsidiary exchange symmetries. In the basis of latter one, the system can be divided into $L$ 1D subsystems each of which corresponds to a generalized $SSH_R$ model having $R$ sublattices and on-site potentials. Chiral symmetry is absent in all subsystems except when the axis of main exchange symmetry coincides on the central chain. We find that the system may host zero- and finite-energy topological …
Recent experiments [L. Ju et al., Nature, 2015, 520, 650] confirm the existence of gapless states at domain walls created in gated bilayer graphene, when the sublattice stacking is changed from AB to BA. These states are significant because they are topologically protected, valley-polarized and give rise to conductance along the domain wall. Current theoretical models predict the appearance of such states only at domain walls, which preserve the sublattice order. Here we show that the appearance of the topologically protected states in stacking domain walls can be much more common in bilayer g…
We theoretically study a tunneling effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac points protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. The tunnel barrier can be arranged by a magnetic exchange potential which opens a gap at the Dirac points which can be induced by a magnetic proximity effect of a ferromagnetic insulator. We found that the tunnel decay length increases with a decrease in the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, and moreover the dependence is attributed to the correlation of sublattice and spin degree of freedoms which lead to symmetry-protected Dirac points. The tunnel pr…
Usually $Z_2$ topological insulators are protected by time reversal symmetry. Here, we present a new type of $Z_2$ topological insulators in a cubic lattice which is protected by a novel hidden symmetry, while time reversal symmetry is broken. The hidden symmetry has a composite antiunitary operator consisting of fractional translation, complex conjugation, sublattice exchange, and local gauge transformation. Based on the hidden symmetry, we define the hidden-symmetry polarization and $Z_2$ topological invariant to characterize the topological insulators. The surface states have band structure…
Bipartite quantum systems from the chiral universality classes admit topologically protected zero modes at point defects. However, in two-dimensional systems these states can be difficult to separate from compacton-like localized states that arise from flat bands, formed if the two sublattices support a different number of sites within a unit cell. Here we identify a natural reduction of chiral symmetry, obtained by coupling sites on the majority sublattice, which gives rise to spectrally isolated point-defect states, topologically characterized as zero modes supported by the complementary min…
Symmetry plays fundamental role in physics and the nature of symmetry changes in non-Hermitian physics. Here the symmetry-protected scattering in non-Hermitian linear systems is investigated by employing the discrete symmetries that classify the random matrices. The even-parity symmetries impose strict constraints on the scattering coefficients: the time-reversal (C and K) symmetries protect the symmetric transmission or reflection; the pseudo-Hermiticity (Q symmetry) or the inversion (P) symmetry protects the symmetric transmission and reflection. For the inversion-combined time-reversal symm…
Under what conditions does a superconductor inherit topologically protected nodes from its parent normal state? In the context of Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry, the pairing order parameter is classified by monopole harmonics and necessarily nodal [Li and Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett., 120, 067003 (2018)]. Here, we show that a similar conclusion could also apply to 2D Dirac semimetals, although the conditions for the existence of nodes are more complex, depending on the pairing matrix structure in the valley and sublattice space. We analytically and numerically analyze the Bogo…
Higher-order topological insulators are a new class of topological phases of matter, originally conceived for electrons in solids. It has been suggested that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ Berry phase (Berry phase quantized into $2π/N$) is a useful tool to characterize the symmetry protected topological states, while the experimental evidence is still elusive. Recently, topolectrical circuits have emerged as a simple yet very powerful platform for studying topological physics that are challenging to realize in condensed matter systems. Here, we present the first experimental observation of second-order corner…
We perform a complete classification of two-band $\bk\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theories at band crossing points in 3D semimetals with $n$-fold rotation symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using this classification, we show the existence of new 3D topological semimetals characterized by $C_{4,6}$-protected double-Weyl nodes with quadratic in-plane (along $k_{x,y}$) dispersion or $C_6$-protected triple-Weyl nodes with cubic in-plane dispersion. We apply this theory to the 3D ferromagnet HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ and confirm it is a double-Weyl metal protected by $C_4$ symmetry. Furthermore, if the direction…
Recently, real topological phases protected by $PT$ symmetry have been actively investigated. In two dimensions, the corresponding topological invariant is the Stiefel-Whitney number. A recent theoretical advance is that in the presence of the sublattice symmetry, the Stiefel-Whitney number can be equivalently formulated in terms of Takagi's factorization. The topological invariant gives rise to a novel second-order topological insulator with odd $PT$-related pairs of corner zero modes. In this article, we review the elements of this novel second-order topological insulator, and demonstrate th…
One of the hallmarks of bulk topology is the existence of robust boundary localized states. For instance, a conventional $d$ dimensional topological system hosts $d{-}1$ dimensional surface modes, which are protected by non-spatial symmetries. Recently, this idea has been extended to higher order topological phases with boundary modes that are localized in lower dimensions such as in the corners or in one dimensional hinges of the system. In this work, we demonstrate that a higher order topological phase can be engineered in a nonequilibrium state when the time-independent model does not posse…
We propose a topological understanding of the quantum spin Hall state without considering any symmetries, and it follows from the gauge invariance that either the energy gap or the spin spectrum gap needs to close on the system edges, the former scenario generally resulting in counterpropagating gapless edge states. Based upon the Kane-Mele model with a uniform exchange field and a sublattice staggered confining potential near the sample boundaries, we demonstrate the existence of such gapless edge states and their robust properties in the presence of impurities. These gapless edge states are …
We theoretically study the three-dimensional topological semimetals with nodal surfaces protected by crystalline symmetries. Different from the well-known nodal-point and nodal-line semimetals, in these materials, the conduction and valence bands cross on closed nodal surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We propose different classes of nodal surfaces, both in the absence and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the absence of SOC, a class of nodal surfaces can be protected by spacetime inversion symmetry and sublattice symmetry and characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index, while another …
We report on the observation of a topologically protected edge state at the interface between two topologically distinct domains of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, which we implement in arrays of evanescently coupled dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides. Direct evidence of the topological character of the edge state is obtained through several independent experiments: Its spatial localization at the interface as well as the restriction to one sublattice is confirmed by real-space leakage radiation microscopy. The corresponding momentum-resolved spectrum obtained by Fourier im…
Topologically protected zero-line modes appear at the interface between two regions of the monolayer graphene in quantum anomalous Hall phase with different Chern number. In the presence of staggered sublattice potential, the band gaps of the two valleys become different, and the phase diagram defined by the Chern number has an additional regime of topologically trivial phase. The interface between the topologically trivial and non-trivial regions hosts zero-line mode in only one valley. By tuning the exchange field, three types of interface that host zero-line modes in selected valley(s) are …
We propose a magnon realization of 3D topological insulator in the AIII (chiral symmetry) topological class. The topological magnon gap opens due to the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. The existence of the topological invariant is established by calculating the bulk winding number of the system. Within our model, the surface magnon Dirac cone is protected by the sublattice chiral symmetry. By analyzing the magnon surface modes, we confirm that the backscattering is prohibited. By weakly breaking the chiral symmetry, we observe the magnon Hall response on the surface due to open…
We introduce novel higher-order topological phases of matter in chiral-symmetric systems (class AIII of the tenfold classification), most of which would be misidentified as trivial by current theories. These phases are protected by "multipole chiral numbers", bulk integer topological invariants that in 2D and 3D are built from sublattice multipole moment operators, as defined herein. The integer value of a multipole chiral number indicates how many degenerate zero-energy states localize at each corner of a system. These higher-order phases of matter are generally boundary-obstructed and robust…
We study the existence and stability of Dirac nodal lines in three-dimensional layered systems, whose layers individually have Dirac nodal points protected by chiral (sublattice) symmetry. The model system we consider is the rhombohedral stack of graphene layers with each layer subjected to a uniform external potential that respects either AIII or BDI classes. From the Hamiltonians in either classes, a pair of nontrivial spiraling Dirac nodal lines can be derived. The results are reasonable in accord to the topological classification of gapless phases for codimension $2$. The nodal lines appro…
We investigate the effect of a non-magnetic donor impurity located at the surface of the SnTe topological crystalline insulator. In particular, the changes on the surface states due to a Sb impurity atom are analyzed by means of ab initio simulations of pristine and impurity-doped SnTe. Both semi-infinite and slab geometries are considered within the first-principles approach. Furthermore, minimal and Green's function continuum models are proposed with the same goal. We find that the Dirac cones are shifted down in energy upon doping; this shift strongly depends on the position of the impurity…

A periodically driven quantum Hall system in a fixed magnetic field is found to exhibit a series of phases featuring anomalous edge modes with the "wrong" chirality. This leads to pairs of counter-propagating chiral edge modes at each edge, in sharp contrast to stationary quantum Hall systems. We show that the pair of Floquet edge modes are protected by the chiral (sublattice) symmetry, and that they are robust against static disorder. The existence of distinctive phases with the same Chern and winding numbers but very different edge state spectra points to the important role played by symmetr…
In this paper, we discuss the characteristic features of one-dimensional topological insulators with inversion symmetry but noncentered inversion axis in the unit cell, for any choice of the unit cell. In these systems, the global inversion operation generates a k-dependent inversion operator within the unit cell and this implies a nonquantized Zak's phase both for the trivial and nontrivial topological phases. By relating the Zak's phase with the eigenvalues of modified parity operators at the inversion invariant momenta, a corrected quantized form of the Zak's phase is derived. We show that …
We propose a new type of topological states of matter exhibiting topologically nontrivial edge states (ESs) within gapless bulk states (GBSs) protected by both spin rotational and reflection symmetries. A model presenting such states is simply comprised of a one-dimensional reflection symmetric superlattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling containing odd number of sublattices per unit cell. We show that the system has a rich phase diagram including a topological metal (TM) phase where nontrivial ESs coexist with nontrivial GBSs at Fermi level. Topologically distinct phases can be reached…
In this work we show that Rashba-based topological superconductor nanowires, where the spin-orbit coupling may change its sign, support three topological phases protected by chiral symmetry. When a superconducting phase gradient is applied over the interface of the two nontrivial phases, the Andreev spectrum is qualitatively phase shifted by πcompared to usual Majorana weak links. The topological π-junction has the striking property of exhibiting maximum supercurrent in the vicinity of vanishing phase difference. Qualitative features of the junction are robust against disorder and magnetic fie…

We develop a complete theory of symmetry and topology in non-Hermitian physics. We demonstrate that non-Hermiticity ramifies the celebrated Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classification for insulators and superconductors. In particular, charge conjugation is defined in terms of transposition rather than complex conjugation due to the lack of Hermiticity, and hence chiral symmetry becomes distinct from sublattice symmetry. It is also shown that non-Hermiticity enables a Hermitian-conjugate counterpart of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry. Taking into account sublattice symmetry or pseudo-Hermiticity a…
A topological concern is addressed in view of the extensively and intensively studied topological phases of condensed matter. In this realm, the phases with topological order cannot be characterized by symmetry alone. Moreover, the relevant phase transitions do occur without spontaneous symmetry breaking, beyond the scope of Landau's theory. The first realization of such phases is the discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), which was followed soon by a topological interpretation. Later on, a distinct, half-integer QHE was also found from graphene, which has almost spin degeneracy d…
Discrete-time quantum walks (DTQW) have topological phases that are richer than those of time-independent lattice Hamiltonians. Even the basic symmetries, on which the standard classification of topological insulators hinges, have not yet been properly defined for quantum walks. We introduce the key tool of timeframes, i.e., we describe a DTQW by the ensemble of time-shifted unitary timestep operators belonging to the walk. This gives us a way to consistently define chiral symmetry (CS) for DTQW's. We show that CS can be ensured by using an "inversion symmetric" pulse sequence. For one-dimensi…
We study theoretically "graphene-like" plasmonic metamaterials constituted by two-dimensional arrays of metallic nanoparticles, including perfect honeycomb structures with and without inversion symmetry, as well as generic bipartite lattices. The dipolar interactions between localised surface plasmons in different nanoparticles gives rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole lattice. We study the band structure of collective plasmons and unveil its tunability with the orientation of the dipole moments associated with the localised surface plasmons. Depending on the dipole orientat…

We construct microscopical models of one-dimensional non-interacting topological insulators in all of the chiral universality classes. Specifically, we start with a deformation of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model that breaks time-reversal symmetry, which is in the AIII class. We then couple this model to its time-reversal counterpart in order to build models in the classes BDI, CII, DIII and CI. We find that the $\mathbb{Z}$ topological index (the winding number) in individual chains is defined only up to a sign. This comes from noticing that changing the sign of the chiral symmetry operat…
