INO-ICAL is a proposed underground particle physics experiment to study the neutrino oscillation parameters by detecting neutrinos produced in the atmospheric air showers. Iron CALorimeter (ICAL) is to have 151 layers of iron stacked vertically, with active detector elements in between the iron layers. The iron layers will be magnetized to enable the measurement of momentum and charge of the $μ^-$ (or $μ^+$) produced by $ν_μ$ (or $\barν_μ$) interactions. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) have been chosen as the active detector elements due to their large area coverage, uncompromised sensitivity, consistent performance for decades, as well as cost effectiveness. The major factors that decide the physics potential of the ICAL experiment are efficiency, position resolution and time resolution of the large area RPCs. A prototype detector called miniICAL (with 11 iron layers) was commissioned to understand the engineering challenges in building the large scale magnet and its ancillary systems, and also to study the performance of the RPC detectors and readout electronics developed by the INO collaboration. As part of the performance study of the RPC detectors, an attempt is made to improve the position and time resolution of them. Even a small improvement in the position and time resolution will help to improve the measurements of momentum and directionality of the neutrinos in ICAL. The Time-over-Threshold (ToT) of the RPC pulses (signals) is recorded by the readout electronics. ToT is a measure of the pulse width and consequently the amplitude. This information is used to improve the time and position resolution of the RPCs and consequently INO physics potential.
Resistive Plate Chambers have a very important role for muon triggering both in the barrel and in the endcap regions of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In order to optimize their performance, it is of primary importance to tune the electronic threshold of the front-end boards reading the signals from these detectors. In this paper we present the results of a study aimed to evaluate the effects on the RPC efficiency, cluster size and detector intrinsic noise rate, of variations of the electronics threshold voltage.
This paper has the purpose to study the rate capability of the Resistive Plate Chamber, RPC, starting from the basic physics of this detector. The effect of different working parameters determining the rate capability is analysed in detail, in order to optimize a new family of RPCs for applications to heavy irradiation environments and in particular to the LHC phase 2. A special emphasis is given to the improvement achievable by minimizing the avalanche charge delivered in the gas. The paper shows experimental results of Cosmic Ray tests, performed to study the avalanche features for different…
The reduction of the average charge per count in the gas along with the capability to discriminate very small signals from noise can allow an efficient and long-term Resistive Plate Chamber detector operation in high radiation background environment. This goal has been reached during the R&D program of the BIS78 upgrade project of the ATLAS detector at LHC through the deep integration of a fast (100 ps peaking time) and sensitive (as small as 100 `V threshold) Front- End electronics (FE) with a very large size detector structure. This innovative RPC integration concept pivots on a newly concei…
The Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) are low-cost charged-particle detectors with good timing resolution and potentially good spatial resolution. Using RPC as gamma detector provides an opportunity for application in positron emission tomography (PET). In this work, we use GEANT4 simulation package to study various methods improving the detection efficiency of a realistic RPC-based PET model for 511keV photons, by adding more detection units, changing the thickness of each layer, choosing different converters and using multi-gaps RPC (MRPC) technique. Proper balance among these factors are discu…
This work reports a cost-effective, simple front-end readout and DAQ of a RPC-based muon scattering tomography system under construction. The Time-over-threshold property of NINO ASICs has been exploited to achieve precise tracking by extraction of position information. The use of a low-cost FPGA for event selection and TOT measurement has been demonstrated for a prototype RPC which has been triggered by a cosmic ray hodoscope of three plastic scintillators. The relation between input pulse width and TOT has been established by analyzing the waveforms of the RPC signals. The TOT profile at dif…
This communication describes test beam results, focusing on detection efficiency and timing precision, of common float glass timing Resistive Plate Chambers (tRPCs) exposed to a $2.7$~GeV proton beam and operated at above ambient temperature in order to increase the count rate capability of the chambers, by exploiting the reduction in the resistivity of the glass electrodes. Results suggest that the count rate capability can be extended at least up to $1500~Hz/cm^2$ when the detector is operated at $40.6^{\circ}$C without noticeable loss of efficiency or timing precision degradation with value…
The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs a trigger system consisting of a first-level hardware trigger (L1) and a software-based high-level trigger. The L1 muon trigger system selects muon candidates, assigns them to the correct LHC bunch crossing and classifies them into one of six transverse-momentum threshold classes. The L1 muon trigger system uses resistive-plate chambers (RPCs) to generate the muon-induced trigger signals in the central (barrel) region of the ATLAS detector. The ATLAS RPCs are arranged in six concentric layers and operate in a toroidal magnetic fie…
Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) is a gaseous detector, known for its good spatial resolution and excellent time resolution. Due to its fast response and excellent time resolution, it is used for both triggering and timing purpose. But the time resolution of RPC is dependent on the detector geometry, applied voltage and the gas mixture used for detector operation. In this work, we have tried to develop a numerical model to estimate the time resolution of the detector. The model is developed using COMSOL Multiphysics, a commercially available finite element method solver. Using the primary ionizat…
The ALICE Muon Trigger is currently yielded by a detector currently composed of 72 Bakelite single-gap Resistive Plate Chambers operated in maxi-avalanche mode, arranged in four 5.5x6.5 m2 detection planes. In order to meet the requirements posed by the forthcoming LHC high luminosity runs starting from 2021 onwards, in which ALICE will be read out in continuous mode, the Muon Trigger will become a Muon Identifier and will undergo a major upgrade. In the current setup, signals from about 21k strips are discriminated by 2400 non-amplified Front End (FEE) cards, whose thresholds are provided by …
The 50~kton Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the underground India based Neutrino Observatory (INO) will make measurements on atmospheric neutrinos. Muons produced in charged current (CC) interactions of muon neutrinos with the iron are tracked spatially and temporally through the signals that they produce in the Resistive Plate Chambers~(RPCs) that are interleaved with iron layers. Since the RPCs will be operated in the avalanche mode the signal rise-time is $\sim~1~\rm{nsec}$ resulting in a fast time response. While the muon track is derived from the X and Y hit information of the RPCs an…
The first Resistive Plate Chambers detectors were developed for cosmic ray experiments, where low rate capability, good time resolution and low cost per unit of area were needed. These same features, except for the low rate capability, were required in the muon spectrometers of the collider experiments like LHC. For this purpose newRPCdetectors with increased rate capability were developed. The rate capability improvement has been achieved thanks to the transition from streamer to saturated avalanche regime, in which the average charge produced in the gas dicharge is smaller. The price to pay …
Extensice Air Shower (EAS) arrays are survey instruments able to monitor continuously all the overhead sky. Their wide field of view (about 2 sr) is ideal to complement directional detectors by performing unbiased sky surveys, by monitoring variable or flaring sources, such as AGNs, and to discover transients or explosive events (GRBs). With an energy threshold in the 100 GeV range EAS arrays are transient factories. All EAS arrays presently in operation or under installation are located in the Northern hemisphere. A new survey instrument located in the Southern Hemisphere should be a high pri…
The mitigation of human-induced climate change is of crucial importance for the sustainability of humankind. For this aim the RPC community has exerted considerable effort over the last decade to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from our detectors. These included searching for new eco-friendly gases, implementing recovery and/or recirculation systems, improving gastightness and using new materials and approaches in detector conception and operation for the reduction of gas flow rates. Along this line of work, we present here an RPC architecture aimed at a dramatic reduction of gas use i…
Pixel detectors only record signals above a tuned threshold in order to suppress noise. As sensors become thinner, pitches decrease, and radiation damage reduces the collected charge, it is increasingly desirable to lower thresholds. By making the simple, but powerful observation that hit pixels tend to be spatially close to each other, we introduce a scheme for dynamic thresholds. This dynamic scheme can enhance the signal efficiency without significantly increasing the occupancy. In addition to presenting a selection of empirical results, we also discuss some potential methods for implementi…
The Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors offer excellent spatial and temporal resolution in harsh radiation environments of high-luminosity colliders. In this work, an attempt has been made to establish an algorithm for estimating the time resolution of different MPGDs. It has been estimated numerically on the basis of two aspects, statistics and distribution of primary electrons and their diffusion in gas medium, while ignoring their multiplication. The effect of detector design parameters, field configuration and the composition of gas mixture on the resolution have also been investigated. Finall…
Small chemical sensors are subjected to adsorption-desorption fluctuations which usually considered as noise contaminating useful signal. Based on temporal properties of this noise, it is shown that it can be made useful if proper processed. Namely, the signal, which characterizes the total amount of adsorbed analyte, should be subjected to a kind of amplitude discrimination (or level crossing discrimination) with certain threshold. When the amount is equal or above the threshold, the result of discrimination is standard dc signal, otherwise it is zero. Analytes are applied at low concentratio…
NaI(Tl) crystals are used as particle detectors in a variety of rare-event search experiments because of their superb light-emission quality. The crystal light yield is generally high, above 10 photoelectrons per keV, and its emission spectrum is peaked around 400 nm, which matches well to the sensitive region of bialkali photocathode photomultiplier tubes. However, since NaI(Tl) crystals are hygroscopic, a sophisticated method of encapsulation has to be applied that prevents moisture from chemically attacking the crystal and thereby degrading the emission. In addition, operation with low ener…
We present a concept to improve the spatial resolution of silicon pixel-detectors via the implementation of a sub-pixel cross-coupling, which introduces directional charge sharing between pixels. The charge-collection electrode is segmented into sub-pixels and each sub-pixel is coupled to the closest sub-pixel of the neighboring pixel. Such coupling schema is evaluated for a model sensor design with $50 μm \times 50 μm$ pixels and AC-coupled sub-pixels. A first-order SPICE simulation is used, to determine feasible coupling strengths and assess the influence on the charge-collection efficiency.…
