In solids, the response of the lattice to photo-excitation is often described by the inertial evolution on an impulsively modified potential energy surface which leads to coherent motion. However, it remains unknown if vibrational coherence is sustained through a phase transition, during which coupling between modes can be strong and may lead to rapid loss of coherence. Here we use coherent phonon spectroscopy to track lattice coherence in the structural phase transition of V$_2$O$_3$. In both the low and high symmetry phases unique coherent phonon modes are generated at low fluence. However, coherence is lost when driving between the low and high symmetry phases. Our results suggest non-inertial dynamics dominate during phase transition due to disorder and multi-mode coupling.
We report on the transfer of coherence from a quantum-well electron-hole condensate to the light it emits. As a function of density, the coherence of the electron-hole pair system evolves from being full for the low density Bose-Einstein condensate to a chaotic behavior for a high density BCS-like state. This degree of coherence is transfered to the light emitted in a damped oscillatory way in the ultrafast regime. Additionally, the photon field exhibits squeezing properties during the transfer time. We analyze the effect of light frequency and separation between electron and hole layers on th…
Femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction is employed to study the dynamics of the periodic lattice distortion (PLD) associated with the charge-density-wave (CDW) in K0.3MoO3. Using a multi-pulse scheme we show the ability to extend the lifetime of coherent oscillations of the PLD about the undistorted structure through re-excitation of the electronic states. This suggests that it is possible to enter a regime where the symmetry of the potential energy landscape corresponds to the high symmetry phase but the scattering pathways that lead to the damping of coherent dynamics are still controll…
1T'-TaTe2 exhibits an intriguing first-order structural phase transition at around 170 K. Understanding the electronic structural properties is a crucial way to comprehend the origin of the structural phase transition. We performed a combined optical and ultrafast pump-probe study on the compound across the transition temperature. The phase transition leads to abrupt changes of both optical spectra and ultrafast electronic relaxation dynamics. The measurements revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure. We elaborate that the phase transition is of the first order and can not be attribu…
Ultrafast laser pulse has provided a systematic way to inspect the dynamics of electrons in condensed matter systems. In this paper, by means of time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we study an ultrafast laser driven Kondo lattice model, in which conduction electrons are strongly coupled with magnetically local moments. The single-particle spectral function due to strong correlation effects and photon emission in the non-equilibrium states under laser driving are calculated. We find laser field excited collective doublon-hole pairs and an associated transient melting of Kondo c…
We apply ultrafast spectroscopy to establish a time-domain hierarchy between structural and electronic effects in a strongly-correlated electron system. We discuss the case of the model system VO2, a prototypical non-magnetic compound that exhibits cell doubling, charge localization and a metal-insulator transition below 340 K. We initiate the formation of the metallic phase by prompt hole photo-doping into the valence band of the low-T insulator. The I-M transition is however delayed with respect to hole injection, exhibiting a bottleneck timescale that corresponds to half period of the phono…
We study the non-equilibrium structural dynamics of the incommensurate and nearly-commensurate charge-density wave phases in 1T-TaS$_2$. Employing ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction (ULEED) with 1 ps temporal resolution, we investigate the ultrafast quench and recovery of the CDW-coupled periodic lattice distortion. Sequential structural relaxation processes are observed by tracking the intensities of main lattice as well as satellite diffraction peaks as well as the diffuse scattering background. Comparing distinct groups of diffraction peaks, we disentangle the ultrafast quench of the…
We report on the ultrafast dynamics of charge order and structural response during the photoinduced suppression of charge and orbital order in a mixed-valence manganite. Employing femtosecond time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction below and at the Mn K absorption edge, we present a method to disentangle the transient charge order and structural dynamics in thin films of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Based on the static resonant scattering spectra, we extract the dispersion correction of charge ordered Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions, allowing us to separate the transient contributions of purely charge order from struc…
The possibility of driving phase transitions in low-density condensates through the loss of phase coherence alone has far-reaching implications for the study of quantum phases of matter. This has inspired the development of tools to control and explore the collective properties of condensate phases via phase fluctuations. Electrically-gated oxide interfaces, ultracold Fermi atoms, and cuprate superconductors, which are characterized by an intrinsically small phase-stiffness, are paradigmatic examples where these tools are having a dramatic impact. Here we use light pulses shorter than the inte…
Vanadium dioxide, an archetypal correlated-electron material, undergoes an insulator-metal transition near room temperature that exhibits electron-correlation-driven and structurally-driven physics. Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy and x-ray scattering we show that these processes can be disentangled in the time domain. Specifically, following intense sub-picosecond electric-field excitation, a partial collapse of the insulating gap occurs within the first ps. Subsequently, this electronic reconfiguration initiates a change in lattice symmetry taking place on a slower timescale. We identif…
Ultrashort x-ray pulses can be used to disentangle magnetic and structural dynamics and are accordingly utilized here to study the photoexcitation of NdNiO$_3$ (NNO), a model nickelate exhibiting structural and magnetic dynamics that conspire to induce an IMT. During the course of the photoinduced insulator to metal transition (IMT) with above gap excitation, we observe an ultrafast ($<$ 180 fs) quenching of magnetic order followed by a time delayed collapse of the insulating phase probed by X-ray absorption and THz transmission (~ 450 fs) that correlates with the slowest optical phonon mode i…
We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em …
A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switch…
Understanding microscopic processes in materials and devices that can be switched by light requires experimental access to dynamics on nanometer length and femtosecond time scales. Here, we introduce ultrafast dark-field electron microscopy, tailored to map the order parameter across a structural phase transition. We track the evolution of charge-density wave domains in 1T-TaS2 after ultrashort laser excitation, elucidating relaxation pathways and domain wall dynamics. The unique benefits of selective contrast enhancement will inspire future beam shaping technology in ultrafast transmission el…
The transition between different states in manganites can be driven by various external stimuli. Controlling these transitions with light opens the possibility to investigate the microscopic path through which they evolve. We performed femtosecond (fs) transmission electron microscopy on a bi-layered manganite to study its response to ultrafast photoexcitation. We show that a photoinduced temperature jump launches a pressure wave that provokes coherent oscillations of the lattice parameters, detected via ultrafast electron diffraction. Their impact on the electronic structure are monitored via…
The emergent properties of quantum materials, such as symmetry-broken phases and associated spectral gaps, can be effectively manipulated by ultrashort photon pulses. Impulsive optical excitation generally results in a complex non-equilibrium electron and lattice dynamics that involves multiple processes on distinct timescales, and a common conception is that for times shorter than about 100 fs the gap in the electronic spectrum is not seriously affected by lattice vibrations. Here, we directly monitor the photo-induced collapse of the spectral gap in a canonical charge-density-wave material, …
The ability to control the structure of a crystalline solid on ultrafast timescales bears enormous potential for information storage and manipulation or generating new functional states of matter [1]. In many materials where the ultrafast control of crystalline structures has been explored, optical excitation pushes materials towards their less ordered high temperature phase [2{9] as electronically driven ordered phases melt and possible concomitant structural modifications relax. Nonetheless, for a few select materials it has been shown that photoexcitation can slightly enhance the amplitude …
Four-dimensional ultrafast transmission electron microscopy (4D-UTEM) measurements reveal a rich variety of structural dynamic phenomena at a phase transition in the charge-density-wave (CDW) 1T-TaSe2. Through the photoexcitation, remarkable changes on both the CDW intensity and orientation are clearly observed associated with the transformation from a commensurate (C) into an incommensurate (IC) phase in a time-scale of about 3 ps. Moreover, the transient states show up a notable "structurally isosbestic point" at a wave vector of qiso where the C and IC phases yield their diffracting efficie…
The simultaneous condensation of electronic and structural degrees of freedom gives rise to new states of matter, including superconductivity and charge-density-wave formation. When exciting such a condensed system, it is commonly assumed that the ultrafast laser pulse disturbs primarily the electronic order, which in turn destabilizes the atomic structure. Contrary to this conception, we show here that structural destabilization of few atoms causes melting of the macroscopic ordered charge-density wave in 1T-TiSe2. Using ultrafast pump-probe non-resonant and resonant X-ray diffraction, we obs…
Nonlinear phononics holds the promise for controlling properties of quantum materials on the ultrashort timescale. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we solve a model for the description of organic solids, where correlated electrons couple nonlinearly to a quantum phonon mode. Unlike previous works, we exactly diagonalize the local phonon mode within the noncrossing approximation to include the full phononic fluctuations. By exciting the local phonon in a broad range of frequencies near resonance with an ultrashort pulse, we show it is possible to induce a Mott insulator-to-meta…
Ultrafast dynamics across the photoinduced three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal (IM) transition in CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. The structural coherence of the low-$T$ broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence of $F_{\mathrm{c}}\approx3$ mJ/cm$^{2}$ (at 1.55-eV photon energy) resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the original low-$T$ state. The el…
The electronic and structural properties of a material are strongly determined by its symmetry. Changing the symmetry via a photoinduced phase transition offers new ways to manipulate material properties on ultrafast timescales. However, in order to identify when and how fast these phase transitions occur, methods that can probe the symmetry change in the time domain are required. We show that a time-dependent change in the coherent phonon spectrum can probe a change in symmetry of the lattice potential, thus providing an all-optical probe of structural transitions. We examine the photoinduced…
Disentangling the primary order parameter from secondary order parameters in phase transitions is critical to the interpretation of the transition mechanisms in strongly correlated systems and quantum materials. Here we present a study of structural phase transition pathways in superionic Cu2S nanocrystals that exhibit intriguing properties. Utilizing ultrafast electron diffraction techniques sensitive in both momentum-space and the time-domain, we distinguish the dynamics of crystal symmetry breaking and lattice expansion in this system. We are able to follow the transient states along the tr…
We report on a transient optical reflectivity study of the charge density wave (CDW) in CuxTiSe2 single crystals. Our measurements reveal that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at x=0.04 from a strong commensurate CDW (x<0.04) to a soft incommensurate CDW (x>0.04). We find that the cooperative driving mechanisms for the commensurate CDW, the excitonic insulator mechanism and the soft L$_1$$^-$ phonon mode, decouple at x=0.04 with the observed fluctuations in the folded Se-4p band dominating the transition. We also demonstrate a loss of coherence in the A$_{1g}$ phonon with increa…
Temperature dependence of relaxation dynamics of UX$_{3}$ (X = Al, Ga, Sn) compounds is studied using time resolved pump-probe technique in the reflectance geometry. UGa$_{3}$ is an itinerant antiferromagnet, while UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$ are spin fluctuation systems. For UGa$_{3}$, our data are consistent with the formation of a spin density wave SDW gap as evidenced from the quasidivergence of the relaxation time $τ$ near the Néel temperature $T_{N}$. For UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$, the relaxation dynamics shows a change from single exponential to two exponential behavior below a particular tem…
The spinel-structure CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ compound displays a rather unusual orbitally-driven three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal transition. The low-T symmetry-broken insulating state is especially interesting due to the existence of a metastable irradiation-induced disordered weakly conducting state. Here we study intense femtosecond optical pulse irradiation effects by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. We show that the structural coherence of the low-T broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshol…
Manipulating crystal structure and the corresponding electronic properties in quantum materials provides opportunities for the exploration of exotic physics and practical applications. Here, by ultrafast electron diffraction, structure factor calculation and TDDFT-MD simulations, we report the photoinduced concurrent intralayer and interlayer structural transitions in the Td and 1T' phase of XTe2 (X=Mo, W). Concomitant with the interlayer structural transition by shear displacement, the ultrafast suppression of the intralayer Peierls distortion within 0.3 ps is demonstrated and attributed to M…
We report the ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy measurements on the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Our experimental results reveal the two-stage development of the hybridization between localized $f$ moments and conduction electrons with lowering temperature, as evidenced by (1) the presence of hybridization fluctuation for temperatures from $\sim$85 K ($T^*$) to $\sim$140 K ($T^\dagger$), and (2) the emergence of collective hybridization below the coherence temperature, $T^*$, marked by the opening of an indirect gap of 2$Δ$ $\approx$12 meV. We also o…

Spontaneous C4-symmetry breaking phases are ubiquitous in layered quantum materials, and often compete with other phases such as superconductivity. Preferential suppression of the symmetry broken phases by light has been used to explain non-equilibrium light induced superconductivity, metallicity, and the creation of metastable states. Key to understanding how these phases emerge is understanding how C4 symmetry is restored. A leading approach is based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, which explains the coherence response seen in many systems. However, we show that, for the case of th…
