We determine the higher symmetries of 5d SCFTs engineered from M-theory on a $\mathbb{C}^3 / Γ$ background for $Γ$ a finite subgroup of $SU(3)$. This resolves a longstanding question as to how to extract this data when the resulting singularity is non-toric (when $Γ$ is non-abelian) and/or not isolated (when the action of $Γ$ has fixed loci). The BPS states of the theory are encoded in a 1d quiver quantum mechanics gauge theory which determines the possible 1-form and 2-form symmetries. We also show that this same data can also be extracted by a direct computation of the corresponding defect group associated with the orbifold singularity. Both methods agree, and these computations do not rely on the existence of a resolution of the singularity. We also observe that when the geometry faithfully captures the global 0-form symmetry, the abelianization of $Γ$ detects a 2-group structure (when present). As such, this establishes that all of this data is indeed intrinsic to the superconformal fixed point rather than being an emergent property of an IR gauge theory phase.
We study the orbifold singularities $X=\mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a finite subgroup of $SU(3)$. M-theory on this orbifold singularity gives rise to a 5d SCFT, which is investigated with two methods. The first approach is via 3d McKay correspondence which relates the group theoretic data of $Γ$ to the physical properties of the 5d SCFT. In particular, the 1-form symmetry of the 5d SCFT is read off from the McKay quiver of $Γ$ in an elegant way. The second method is to explicitly resolve the singularity $X$ and study the Coulomb branch information of the 5d SCFT, which is applied to toric, non…
Many heterotic orbifold models have massless twisted-sector particles with simultaneous E8_1 and E8_2 charges. In the strong-coupling M-theory dual of the heterotic string this poses a paradox: Since the E8_1 and E8_2 live at opposite ends of the x^10 dimension, where could a massless particle with both types of charges possible live? To key to this question are the 5D SCFTs living at the orbifold fixed planes going through the bulk of the M theory. We use dimensional deconstruction to understand how such a 5D SCFT (specifically, the E_0 SCFT at the Z_3 fixed point) works at the superconformal…
We study two families of composite twisted Ramond fields (made by products of two operators) in the $\cal {N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric D1-D5 SCFT$_2$ deformed by a marginal modulus operator away from its $(T^4)^N/ S_N$ free orbifold point. We construct the large-$N$ contributions to the four-point functions with two composite operators and two deformation fields. These functions allow us to derive short-distance OPE limits and to calculate the anomalous dimensions of the composite operators. We demonstrate that one can distinguish two sets of composite Ramond states with twists $m_1$ and $m_2$: p…
2-group symmetries arise when 1-form symmetries and 0-form symmetries of a theory mix with each other under group multiplication. We discover the existence of 2-group symmetries in 5d N=1 abelian gauge theories arising on the (non-extended) Coulomb branch of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), leading us to argue that the UV 5d SCFT itself admits a 2-group symmetry. Furthermore, our analysis determines the global forms of the 0-form flavor symmetry groups of 5d SCFTs, irrespective of whether or not the 5d SCFT admits a 1-form symmetry. As a concrete application of our method, we analyze …
We study six dimensional supergravity theories with superconformal sectors (SCFTs). Instances of such theories can be engineered using type IIB strings, or more generally F-Theory, which translates field theoretic constraints to geometry. Specifically, we study the fate of the discrete 2-form global symmetries of the SCFT sectors. For both $(2,0)$ and $(1,0)$ theories we show that whenever the charge lattice of the SCFT sectors is non-primitively embedded into the charge lattice of the supergravity theory, there is a subgroup of these 2-form symmetries that remains unbroken by BPS strings. By …
In this paper we discuss various $N=3$ SCFTs in 4 dimensions and in particular those which can be obtained as a discrete gauging of an $N=4$ SYM theories with non-simply laced groups. The main goal of the project was to compute the Coulomb branch superconformal index and Higgs branch Hilbert series for the $N=3$ SCFTs that are obtained from gauging a discrete subgroup of the global symmetry group of $N=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. The discrete subgroup contains elements of both $SU(4)$ R-symmetry group and the S-duality group of $N=4$ SYM. This computation was done for the simply laced groups (…
In this note, we discuss families of orbifolds underlying 6D SCFT F-theory models and find a novel pairing structure in the SCFT landscape. Inspection of the rational functions defining models with a common F-theory endpoint leads us to naturally to pair them and find compatible extended groupings matching endpoint collections recently characterized in correspondence with homomorphisms of the ADE subgroups of $SU(2)$ into $E_8.$ We confirm this proposed pairing closely links the proposed SCFT family pairs via explicit computation of gauge algebras. We find these typically pair precisely by a f…
We construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs, that are associated with M5-branes wrapping two different four-dimensional orbifolds. In one case the orbifold is a spindle fibred over another spindle, while in the other it is a spindle fibred over a Riemann surface with genus $g>1$. We show that the central charges of the $d=2$ SCFTs calculated from the gravity solutions agree with field theory computations using anomaly polynomials. The new $D=11$ solutions are obtained after constructing a new consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation …
We analyze topological mass terms of BF type arising in supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to $AdS_5$. These describe spontaneously broken higher-form gauge symmetries in the bulk. Different choices of boundary conditions for the BF terms yield dual field theories with distinct global discrete symmetries. We discuss in detail these symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for 4d $\mathcal N = 1$ SCFTs arising from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface without punctures, including theories from M5-branes at a $\mathbb Z_2$ orbifold singularity. The anomaly polynomial is computed via infl…
We propose a graph-based approach to 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) based on their realization as M-theory compactifications on singular elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds. Field-theoretically, these 5d SCFTs descend from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs by circle compactification and mass deformations. We derive a description of these theories in terms of graphs, so-called Combined Fiber Diagrams, which encode salient features of the partially resolved Calabi--Yau geometry, and provides a combinatorial way of characterizing all 5d SCFTs that descend from a given 6d theory. Remarkably, thes…
We consider the torus compactifications with flux of a class of $6d$ $(1,0)$ SCFTs that can be engineered as the low-energy theories on M$5$-branes near an M$9$-plane on a $C^2/Z_2$ singularity. Specifically, we concentrate on the two SCFTs where the $Z_2$ orbifold action acts non-trivially on the $E_8$ global symmetry. We analyze this problem by compactifying to $5d$, where we can exploit the relation to $5d$ duality domain walls. By a suitable guess of the domain wall theories, the resulting $4d$ theories can be conjectured. These can then be tested by comparing their properties, notably ano…
We study the behaviour of abelian gauge symmetries in six-dimensional N=(1,0) theories upon decoupling gravity and investigate abelian flavour symmetries in the context of 6d N=(1,0) SCFTs. From a supergravity perspective, the anomaly cancellation mechanism implies that abelian gauge symmetries can only survive as global symmetries as gravity is decoupled. The flavour symmetries obtained in this way are shown to be free of ABJ anomalies, and their 't Hooft anomaly polynomial in the decoupling limit is obtained explicitly. In an F-theory realisation the decoupling of abelian gauge symmetries im…
The center-flavor symmetry of a gauge theory specifies the global form of consistent gauge and flavor bundle background field configurations. For 6d gauge theories which arise from a tensor branch deformation of a superconformal field theory (SCFT), we determine the global structure of such background field configurations, including possible continuous Abelian symmetry and R-symmetry bundles. Proceeding to the conformal fixed point, this provides a prescription for reading off the global form of the continuous factors of the zero-form symmetry, including possible non-trivial mixing between fla…
In this letter I analyze the constraints imposed by unitarity on the flavor central charges of four-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=2$ SCFTs with general reductive global symmetry groups. I derive several general and far-reaching consequences of unitarity by computing the norms of flavor singlet Higgs branch operators appearing in the squares of "moment map" operators via the associated vertex operator algebra, and imposing the requirement that they be non-negative.
We characterize the global symmetries for the conjecturally complete collection of six dimensional superconformal field theories (6D SCFTs) which are realizable in F-theory and have no frozen singularities. We provide comprehensive checks of earlier 6D SCFT classification results via an alternative geometric approach yielding new restrictions which eliminate certain theories. We achieve this by directly constraining elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau (CY) threefold Weierstrass models. This allows bypassing all anomaly cancellation machinery and reduces the problem of classifying the 6D SCFT gauge…
We extend our recent study of K3 metrics near the $T^4/Z_2$ orbifold locus to the other torus orbifold loci. In particular, we provide several new constructions of K3 surfaces as hyper-Kähler quotients, which yield new formulae for K3 metrics. We then relate these to the construction of arXiv:1810.10540. As a corollary, we derive infinitely many constraints on the (as yet unknown) BPS spectra of the Minahan-Nemeschansky SCFTs with $E_n$ global symmetry. Specifically, we find linear combinations of $E_n$ characters (evaluated at different points) hiding within K3 metrics and we compute their se…
We present a general prescription for determining the global U(1) symmetries of six-dimensional superconformal field theories (6D SCFTs). We use the quiver-like gauge theory description of the tensor branch to identify candidate U(1) symmetries which can act on generalized matter. The condition that these candidate U(1)'s are free of Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomalies provides bottom-up constraints for U(1)'s. This agrees with the answer obtained from symmetry breaking patterns induced by Higgs branch flows. We provide numerous examples illustrating the details of this proposal. In the F-theory…
We study holographic RG flow solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity obtained from type IIA and IIB string theories compactified on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold with gauge, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. In type IIB non-geometric compactifications, the resulting gauged supergravity has $ISO(3)\times ISO(3)$ gauge group and admits an $N=4$ $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in three dimensions. We study various supersymmetric RG flows from this $N=4$ SCFT to $N=4$ and $N=1$ non-conformal field theories in the IR. The flo…
All known interacting 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) have a tensor branch which includes anti-chiral two-forms and a corresponding lattice of string charges. Automorphisms of this lattice preserve the Dirac pairing and specify discrete global and gauge symmetries of the 6D theory. In this paper we compute this automorphism group for 6D SCFTs. This discrete data determines the geometric structure of the moduli space of vacua. Upon compactification, these automorphisms generate Seiberg-like dualities, as well as additional theories in discrete quotients by the 6D global symmetries. Whe…
Six-dimensional N=(1,0) superconformal field theories can be engineered geometrically via F-theory on elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We include torsional sections in the geometry, which lead to a finite Mordell-Weil group. This allows us to identify the full non-Abelian group structure rather than just the algebra. The presence of torsion also modifies the center of the symmetry groups and the matter representations that can appear. This in turn affects the tensor branch of these theories. We analyze this change for a large class of superconformal theories with torsion and explicitly…

M5-branes probing an ADE singularity lead to 6D SCFTs with (1,0) supersymmetry. On the tensor branch, the M5-branes specify domain walls of a 7D Super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group G of ADE-type, thus providing conformal matter for a broad class of generalized quiver theories. Additionally, these theories have G x G flavor symmetry, and a corresponding Higgs branch. In this note we use the F-theory realization of these theories to calculate the scaling dimension of the operator parameterizing seven-brane recombination, i.e. motion of the stack of M5-branes off of the orbifold singularity.…
In this paper, we introduce a new set of modular-invariant phase factors for orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups, analogous to discrete torsion and generalizing quantum symmetries. After describing their basic properties, we generalize decomposition to include orbifolds with these new phase factors, making a precise proposal for how such orbifolds are equivalent to disjoint unions of other orbifolds without trivially-acting subgroups or one-form symmetries, which we check in numerous examples.
$N$ M5-branes probing the intersection between the orbifold $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ_\text{ADE}$ and an $E_8$ wall give rise to 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as ADE-type orbi-instantons. At fixed $N$ and order of the orbifold, each element of $\text{Hom}(Γ_\text{ADE},E_8)$ defines a different SCFT. The SCFTs are connected by Higgs branch RG flows, which generically reduce the flavor symmetry of the UV fixed point. We determine the full hierarchy of these RG flows for type A, i.e. $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, for any value of $N$ and $k$. The hierarchy takes the form of an intricate Hasse diagram: each node re…
We examine six-dimensional quantum field theories through the lens of higher-form global symmetries. Every Yang-Mills gauge theory in six dimensions, with field strength $f^{(2)}$, naturally gives rise to a continuous 1-form global symmetry associated with the 2-form instanton current $J^{(2)} \sim * \text{Tr} \left( f^{(2)} \wedge f^{(2)}\right)$. We show that suitable mixed anomalies involving the gauge field $f^{(2)}$ and ordinary 0-form global symmetries, such as flavor or Poincaré symmetries, lead to continuous 2-group global symmetries, which allow two flavor currents or two stress tenso…
We study global symmetry groups of six-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs). In the Coulomb branch we use field theoretical arguments to predict an upper bound for the global symmetry of the SCFT. We then analyze global symmetry groups of F-theory constructions of SCFTs with a one-dimensional Coulomb branch. While in the vast majority of cases, all of the global symmetries allowed by our Coulomb branch analysis can be realized in F-theory, in a handful of cases we find that F-theory models fail to realize the full symmetry of the theory on the Coulomb branch. In one particularly m…
We classify the global one-form symmetries for non-Lagrangian $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs that arise by the action of $S$-fold projections on D3-branes. Such a classification is dictated, on a generic point of the Coulomb branch, by probing the charge spectrum of $(p, q)$-strings in the brane setup. The charge lattice of lines is then obtained by finding the ones that are genuine modulo screening by dynamical particles. The one-form symmetries are then extracted from the maximal sub-lattices of mutually local lines. We further comment on the existence of non-invertible symmetries for some of these $…

We study the $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories resulting from the compactification of a family of $5d$ SCFTs on a torus with flux in the global symmetry. The family of $5d$ SCFTs used in the analysis is the one that UV completes the $5d$ $SU(N+1)$ gauge theories with Chern--Simons level $k$ and $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets, generalizing the previous investigation of the torus compactifications of the rank 1 Seiberg $E_{N_f+1}$ SCFT (which is the $N=1$ member of the family). This construction systematically yields three-dimensional theories presenting highly non-trivial non-perturbative phenom…
