Grain boundaries (GBs) are defects originating in multi-crystalline silicon during crystal growth for device Si solar cell fabrication. The presence of GBs changes the coordination of Si, making it advantageous for charge carriers to recombine, which brings a significant reduction of carrier lifetimes. Therefore, GBs can be highly detrimental for device performances. Furthermore, GBs easily form vacancies with deep defect electronic states and are also preferential segregation sites for various impurity species, such as C, N, and O. We studied from first principles the correlation between structural, energetics, and electronic properties of the $Σ$3{111} Si GB with and without vacancies, and the segregation of C, N, and O atoms. C and O atoms strongly increase their ability to segregate when vacancies are present. However, the electronic properties of the $Σ$3{111} Si GB are not affected by the presence of O, while they can strongly change in the case of C. For N atoms, it is not possible to find a clear trend in the energetics and electronic properties both with and without vacancies in the GB. In fact, as N is not isovalent with Si, as C and O, it is more flexible in finding new chemical arrangements in the GB structure. This implies a stronger difficulty in controlling the properties of the material in the presence of N impurity atoms compared to C and O impurities.
Multi-crystalline silicon is widely used for producing low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. During crystal growth and device fabrication, silicon solar cells contain grain boundaries (GBs) which are preferential segregation sites for atomic impurities such as oxygen atoms. GBs can induce charge carriers recombination significantly reducing carrier lifetimes and therefore they can be detrimental for Si device performance. We studied the correlation between structural, energetic and electronic properties of Σ3{111} Si GB in the presence of vacancies, strain and multiple O segregation. The s…
Hydrogen segregation to vacancies in the surface and subsurface layers of (111) and (100) surfaces of Pd is studied in the density functional theory (DFT) approach. Adsorption energies and configurations of various clusters of H atoms at the vacancies are calculated. The adsorption energy varies for different sites in the vacancies with the distance to the surface from -0.26 eV (close to that of the bulk clusters) to -0.62 eV. Enhanced binding is found for the sites above the pores produced by vacancies in the subsurface layer. For the (111) surface vacancy the most favorable for segregation a…
Grain boundaries (GBs) can be used as traps for solute atoms and defects, and the interaction between segregants and GBs is crucial for understanding the properties of nanocrystalline materials. In this study, we have systematically investigated the tendency of Pt to segregate as well as the interaction between Pt and oxygen vacancies at the sigma 3/(111) GB of ceria (CeO2). The Pt atom has a stronger tendency to segregate to the sigma 3/(111) GB than to the (111) and (110) free-standing surfaces, but the tendency is weaker than to the (100) free-standing surface. Mechanic contributions (latti…
We report here a reexamination of the static properties of vacancies in GaAs by means of first-principles density-functional calculations using localized basis sets. Our calculated formation energies yields results that are in good agreement with recent experimental and {\it ab-initio} calculation and provide a complete description of the relaxation geometry and energetic for various charge state of vacancies from both sublattices. Gallium vacancies are stable in the 0, -, -2, -3 charge state, but V_Ga^-3 remains the dominant charge state for intrinsic and n-type GaAs, confirming results from …
In this work we study the electronic structure and magnetism of a TiO2 film grown on another non-magnetic oxide such as a LaAlO3 (001) substrate, concentrating on the role played by structural relaxation and oxygen vacancies. Using Density Functional Theory ab-initio methods, we study the free-standing anatase film as well as the interfaces with either the LaO or AlO2 planes of LaAlO3, focusing on the possibility of magnetic solutions. Our results show that the interface LaO/TiO2 is favored against the AlO2/TiO2 one if no oxygen vacancies are present in the interface whereas the contrary happe…
We propose a new statistical physics model to study equilibrium solute segregation at grain boundaries and the resulting embrittlement effect. This low-temperature expansion model is general and efficient, and its parameters can be obtained from atomistic calculations. It is possible to take into account multiple species, multiple segregation sites with different segregation free energies, account for configurational entropy, grain radius and site competition between solutes. As an example, the model is then applied to the study of phosphorus and hydrogen co-segregation at $\Sigma3$ $109.5°[0\…
Motivated by recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) observations of a highly metallic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the (001) vacuum-cleaved surface of SrTiO3 and the subsequent discussion on the possible role of oxygen vacancies for the appearance of such a state (Ref 1), we analyze by means of density functional theory (DFT) the electronic structure of various oxygen-deficient SrTiO3 surface slabs. We find a significant surface reconstruction after introducing oxygen vacancies and we show that the charges resulting from surface-localized oxygen vacancies --independ…
Based on ab-initio simulations, we report on the nature of principally different mechanisms for interaction of Mg and Zn atoms with grain boundaries in Al alloys leading to different morphology of segregation. The Mg atoms segregate in relatively wide GB region with heterogeneous agglomerations due to the deformation mechanism of solute-GB interaction. In contrast, in the case of Zn atoms an electronic mechanism associated with the formation of directional bonding is dominating in the solute-GB interaction. As a result, for Zn atoms it is energetically beneficial to occupy interstitial positio…
Using ab-initio calculations based on density functional theory, we investigate the effects of vacancies on the electronic and magnetic properties of zigzag SiC nanoribbons (Z-SiCNR). Single (V_C and V_Si) and double (V_SiV_Si and V_SiV_C) vacancies are observed to induce magnetism in Z-SiCNRs. The presence of a single V_Si does not affect the half-metallic behavior of pristine Z-SiCNRs; however, a single V_C leads to a transition from half-metallic to metallic behavior in Z-SiCNRs due to the edge Si p orbitals and the atoms surrounding the vacancy. The interactions of vacancies with foreign i…
The segregation of solute atoms to grain boundaries can have a large influence on the mechanical behavior of polycrystals, particularly in metallic alloys. An overview of 400 calculations of solute-induced changes in grain boundary cohesion from 77 separate studies quantitatively demonstrates that the majority of the variation in solute-induced changes in boundary cohesion is explained by simple bond-breaking arguments. This trend is robust to changes in crystal structure and computational methods. The secondary contributions to embrittlement from other mechanisms, such as atomic size effects …
Extrinsic levels, formation energies, and relaxation geometries are calculated ab initio for oxygen vacancies in alpha-quartz SiO2. The vacancy is found to be thermodynamically stable in the charge states Q=+3, Q=0, Q=--2, and Q=-3. The charged states are stabilized by large and asymmetric distortions near the vacancy site. Concurrently, Franck-Condon shifts for absorption and recombination related to these states are found to be strongly asymmetric. In undoped quartz, the ground state of the vacancy is the neutral charge state, while for moderate p-type and n-type doping, the +3 and -3 states…
The development of super-hard materials has recently focused on systems containing a heavy transition metal and light main group elements. Niobium carbides and nitrides have previously been identified as potential candidates, however, the volatility of carbon and nitrogen during synthesis makes them prone to the formation of anionic vacancies, which have the ability to change the electronic structure, dynamical stability and adversely affecting the mechanical properties. Here, we present ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations that probe the occurrence of anionic vacancies as a functi…
It is well known that the irradiation-induced defects strongly influence the mechanical properties of zirconium (Zr) or its alloys in nuclear reactors. However, how the point defect changes the mechanical properties has been rarely studied. Here, we systematically investigated the effect of vacancies on the mechanical properties of alpha-Zr based on density functional theory (DFT). Both uniformly distributed vacancies and vacancy clusters were considered. Our results reveal that the existence of vacancy will reduce the bulk modulus, while enhance the shear and Young's moduli. Based on these mo…
Distinct dopant behaviors inside and outside dislocation cores are identified by atomic-resolution electron microscopy in perovskite BaSnO3 with considerable consequences on local atomic and electronic structures. Driven by elastic strain, when A-site designated La dopants segregate near a dislocation core, the dopant atoms accumulate at the Ba sites in compressively strained regions. This triggers formation of Ba-vacancies adjacent to the core atomic sites resulting in reconstruction of the core. Notwithstanding the presence of extremely large tensile strain fields, when La atoms segregate in…
We performed first-principles calculations to investigate the possible magnetism induced by the different concentrations of non-magnetic impurities and vacancies in BN sheet. The atoms of Be, B, C, N, O, Al and Si are used to replace either B or N in the systems as impurities. We discussed the changes in density of states as well as the extent of the spatial distributions of the defect states, the possible formation of magnetic moments, the magnitude of the magnetization energies and finally the exchange energies due to the presence of these defects. It is shown that the magnetization energies…
Layered tin monoxide (SnO) offers an exciting two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting system with great technological potential for next-generation electronics and photocatalytic applications. Using a combination of first-principles simulations and strain field analysis, this study investigates the structural dynamics of oxygen (O) vacancies in monolayer SnO and their functionalization by complementary lightweight dopants, namely C, Si, N, P, S, F, Cl, H and H$_{2}$. Our results show that O vacancies are the dominant native defect under Sn-rich growth conditions with active diffusion characteristi…
This paper shows that the oxygen vacancies observed experimentally in thin films of LaCoO3 subject to tensile strain are thermodynamically stable according to ab initio calculations. By using DFT calculations, we show that oxygen vacancies on the order of 6 % forming chains perpendicular to the (001) direction are more stable than the stoichiometric solution. These lead to magnetic Co2+ ions surrounding the vacancies that couple ferromagnetically. The remaining Co3+ cations in an octahedral environment are non magnetic. The gap leading to a ferromagnetic insulating phase occurs naturally and w…
The diffusion of intrinsic defects in 3C-SiC is studied using an ab initio method based on density functional theory. The vacancies are shown to migrate on their own sublattice. The carbon split-interstitials and the two relevant silicon interstitials, namely the tetrahedrally carbon-coordinated interstitial and the <110>-oriented split-interstitial, are found to be by far more mobile than the vacancies. The metastability of the silicon vacancy, which transforms into a vacancy-antisite complex in p-type and compensated material, kinetically suppresses its contribution to diffusion processes. T…
Interaction between hydrogen (H) and metals is central to many materials problems of scientific and technological importance. Chief among them is the development of H storage and H-resistant materials. H segregation or trapping at lattice defects, including vacancies, dislocations, grain boundaries, etc, plays a crucial role in determining the properties of these materials. Here, through first-principles simulations, we propose a unified mechanism involving charge transfer induced strain destabilization to understand H segregation behavior at vacancies. We discover that H prefers to occupy int…
The segregation behavior of the bimetallic alloys PtPd and CoCr in the case of bare surfaces and in the presence of an oxygen ad-layer has been studied by means of first-principles modeling based on density-functional theory (DFT). For both systems, change of the d-band filling due to charge transfer between the alloy components, resulting in a shift of the d-band center of surface atoms compared to the pure components, drives the surface segregation and governs the chemical reactivity of the bimetals. In contrast to previous findings but consistent with analogous PtNi alloy systems, enrichmen…
The interfacial structure of a silicon grain boundary (Si-GB) plays a decisive role on its chemical functionalization and has implications in diverse physical-chemical properties of the material. Therefore, GB interface is particularly relevant when the material is employed in high performance technological applications. Here, we studied from first principles the role of GB interface by providing an atomistic understanding of two different $Σ$3\{112\} Si-GB models. These models are (1$\times$1) and (1$\times$2) $Σ$3\{112\} Si-GBs which lead to different structural reconstruction. Starting from…
$\textit{Ab initio}$ calculations were employed to investigate the effect of oxygen concentration dependent Ti vacancies formation on the core electron binding energy shifts in cubic titanium oxynitride (Ti$_{1-δ}$O$_x$N$_{1-x}$). It was shown, that the presence of a Ti vacancy reduces the 1s core electron binding energy of the first N neighbors by $\sim$0.6 eV and that this effect is additive with respect to the number of vacancies. Hence it is predicted that the Ti vacancy concentration can be revealed from the intensity of the shifted components in the N 1s core spectra region. This notion …
Compositionally complex alloys or concentrated solid solutions are the latest frontier in catalyst design, but mixing different elements in one catalyst may result in surface segregation. Atomistic simulations can predict segregation patterns, but standard approaches based on mean-field models, cluster expansion, or classical interatomic potentials are often limited for the description of multicomponent alloys. We present machine learning potentials that can describe surface segregation with near DFT accuracy. The method is used to study a complex Co-Cu-Fe-Mo-Ni quinary alloy. For this alloy, …
In this paper we study the possible relation between the electronic and magnetic structure of the TiO2/LaAlO3 interface and the unexpected magnetism found in undoped TiO2 films grown on LaAlO$_3$. We concentrate on the role played by structural relaxation and interfacial oxygen vacancies. LaAlO3 has a layered structure along the (001) direction with alternating LaO and AlO2 planes, with nominal charges of +1 and -1, respectively. As a consequence of that, an oxygen deficient TiO2 film with anatase structure will grow preferently on the AlO2 surface layer. We have therefore performed ab-initio …
The incorporation of oxygen atoms has been simulated into either nitrogen or uranium vacancy at the UN(001) surface, sub-surface or central layers. For calculations on the corresponding slab models both the relativistic pseudopotentials and the method of projector augmented-waves (PAW) as implemented in the VASP computer code have been used. The energies of O atom incorporation and solution within the defective UN surface have been calculated and discussed. For different configurations of oxygen ions at vacancies within the UN(001) slab, the calculated density of states and electronic charge r…
The results of DFT supercell calculations of oxygen behavior upon the UN (001) and (110) surfaces as well as at the tilt grain boundary are presented. Oxygen adsorption, migration, incorporation into the surface N vacancies on (001) and (110) surfaces have been modeled using 2D slabs of different thicknesses and supercell sizes. The temperature dependences of the N vacancy formation energies and oxygen incorporation energies are calculated. We demonstrate that O atoms easily penetrate into UN surfaces and grain boundaries containing N vacancies, due to negative incorporation energies and a sma…
Ferritic steels possibly strengthened by oxide dispersion are candidates as structural materials for generation IV and fusion nuclear reactors. Their use is limited by incomplete knowledge of the iron-chromium phase diagram at low temperatures and of the phenomena inducing preferential segregation of one element at grain boundaries or at surfaces. In this context, this work contributes to the multi-scale study of the model iron-chromium alloy and their free surfaces by numerical simulations. This study begins with ab initio calculations of properties related to the mixture of atoms of iron and…
We use ab initio static relaxation methods and semi-empirical molecular-dynamics simulations to investigate the energetics and dynamics of the diffusion of adatoms, dimers, and vacancies on Cu(100). It is found that the dynamical energy barriers for diffusion are well approximated by the static, 0 K barriers and that prefactors do not depend sensitively on the species undergoing diffusion. The ab initio barriers are observed to be significantly lower when calculated within the generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) rather than in the local-density approximation (LDA). Our calculations predic…
We present ab initio calculations for single-atom vacancies in graphene. In agreement with earlier work, we find that vacancies are responsible for the magnetism recently observed experimentally, creating a center with net spin. For small supercells, there is a strong symmetry breaking in the supercell with respect to the perfect graphene structure, and this symmetry breaking is much smaller for larger supercells. The influence of the adsorption of H, O and N atoms on the spin center of the bare single-atom vacancy and its influence on the magnetism induced in these samples is investigated. A …
We have studied the fundamental process of hydrogen binding at interstitial, vacancy and grain boundary (GB) in palladium crystals using Density-Functional Theory. It showed that hydrogen prefers to occupy the octahedral interstitial site in Pd matrix, however a stable H-vacancy complex with most H occupations would contain up to eight hydrogen atoms surrounding the vacancy at tetrahedral sites. Furthermore, H presence assists the pairing or formation of nearby vacancies, which in agreement with previous suggestions by both experiment and theory investigation. Also, this observation could impl…
Graphene and boron nitride (GPBN) heterostructures provide a viable way to realize tunable bandgap, promising new opportunities in graphene-based nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices. In the present study, we investigated the interplay between vacancies and graphene/h-BN interfaces in monolayer GPBN heterostructures. The energetics and kinetics of monovacancies and divacancies in monolayer GPBN heterostructures were examined using first-principle calculations. The interfaces were shown to be preferential locations for vacancy segregation. Meanwhile the kinetics of vacancies was found to b…
Recording field ion microscope images under field evaporating conditions and subsequently reconstructing the underlying atomic configuration, called three-dimensional field ion microscopy (3D-FIM) is one of the few techniques capable of resolving crystalline defects at an atomic scale. However, the quantification of the observed vacancies and their origins are still a matter of debate. It was suggested that high electric fields (1-5 V/Å) used in 3D-FIM could introduce artefact vacancies. To investigate such effects, we used density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Stepped Ni and Pt surface…
A space-charge model is applied to describe the equilibrium effects of segregation of double-donor oxygen vacancies to grain boundaries in dry and wet acceptor-doped samples of the perovskite oxide BaZrO3. The grain boundary core vacancy concentrations and electrostatic potential barriers resulting from different vacancy segregation energies are evaluated. Density-functional calculations on vacancy segregation to the mirror-symmetric Σ3 (112) [-110] tilt grain boundary are also presented. Our results indicate that oxygen vacancy segregation can be responsible for the low grain boundary proton …
Zirconolite, CaZrTi2O7, is a proposed ceramic for the use in disposal of highly active nuclear waste. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used, in conjunction with a random search technique, to identify the stable interstitial sites for the intrinsic defects in zirconolite. There is a significant dependence on charge states for the vacancy defect structures, with the formation of an O2 molecule in certain charge states of Ti and Zr vacancies. The low coordination of the oxygen ions provided sites on which DFT localised holes associated with the cation vacancies. The Frenkel defect energie…
Thin-film solar cells with CuIn$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ (CIGS) absorber are still far below their efficiency limit, although lab cells reach already 19.9%. One important aspect is the homogeneity of the alloy. Large-scale simulations combining Monte Carlo and density functional calculations show that two phases coexist in thermal equilibrium below room temperature. Only at higher temperatures, CIGS becomes more and more a homogeneous alloy. A larger degree of inhomogeneity for Ga-rich CIGS persists over a wide temperature range, which may contribute to the low observed efficiency of Ga-rich CIGS s…
The impact of ordered vacancies on the dynamic stability of perovskites is investigated under the $\textit{ab initio}$ framework with a focus on cubic BaFeO$_{3}$ ($Pm\bar{3}m$) and vacancy-ordered monoclinic BaFeO$_{2.67}$ ($P2_{1}/m$). The harmonic approximation shows that both structures are dynamically unstable at 0 K. For the monoclinic structure, the instability is related to rotational distortions of the Fe coordination tetrahedra near the ordered vacancies. $\textit{Ab initio}$ molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the introduced structural descriptor demonstrate that both…
We study from first principles the luminescence of Lu$_2$SiO$_5$:Ce$^{3+}$ (LSO:Ce), a scintillator widely used in medical imaging applications, and establish the crucial role of oxygen vacancies (V$_O$) in the generated spectrum. The excitation energy, emission energy and Stokes shift of its luminescent centers are simulated through a constrained density-functional theory method coupled with a $Δ$SCF analysis of total energies, and compared with experimental spectra. We show that the high-energy emission band comes from a single Ce-based luminescent center, while the large experimental spread…
Based on the ab initio electronic structure calculations the picture of ferromagnetism in polimerized C60 is proposed which seems to explain the whole set of controversial experimental data. We have demonstrated that, in contrast with cubic fullerene, in rhombohedral C60 the segregation of iron atoms is energetically unprofitable which is a strong argument in favor of intrinsic character of carbon ferromagnetism which can be caused by vacancies with unpaired magnetic electrons. It is shown that: (i) energy formation of the vacancies in the rhombohedral phase of C60 is essentially smaller than …
Nonstoichiometric ceria(CeO$_{2-δ}$) is a candidate reaction medium to facilitate two step water splitting cycles and generate hydrogen. Improving upon its thermodynamic suitability through doping requires an understanding of its vacancy thermodynamics. Using density functional theory(DFT) calculations and a cluster expansion based Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the high temperature thermodynamics of intrinsic oxygen vacancies in ceria. The DFT+$U$ approach was used to get the ground state energies of various vacancy configurations in ceria, which were subsequently fit to a cluster e…
Using density-functional-theory calculations, we have identified new stable configurations for tri-, tetra-, and penta-vacancies in silicon. These new configurations consist of combinations of a ring-hexavacancy with three, two, or one interstitial atoms, respectively, such that all atoms remain fourfold. As a result, their formation energies are lower by 0.6, 1.0, and 0.6 eV, respectively, than the ``part of a hexagonal ring'' configurations, believed up to now to be the lowest-energy states.
We present the results of atomistic and ab initio simulation of several different tilt grain boundaries (GB) in silicon. The boundary structures obtained with genetic algorithm turned out to have no coordination defects, i.e. all silicon atoms restored their tetrahedral coordination during the structure optimisation. That concerns previously known symmetric Σ 5 (130), Σ 3 (211) and Σ 29 (520) boundaries as well as previously unknown asymmetric Σ 9 (-255)/(-211), Σ 3 (-255)/(211) and Σ 13 (790)/(3 11 0) structures. We have performed an extensive study of defect segregation on the boundaries, in…
We present an ab initio DFT study of the magnetic moments that arise in graphite by creating single carbon vacancies in a 3-D graphite network, using a full potential, all electron, spin polarized electronic structure calculations. In previous reports the appearance of magnetic moments was explained in a 2-D graphene sheet just through the existence of the vacancies itself [1-5]. The dependence of the arising magnetic moment on the nature and geometry of the vacancies for different supercells is reported. We found that the highest value of magnetic moment is obtained for a 3x3x1 supercell and …
Atomic-scale calculations indicate that both stress effects and chemical binding contribute to the redistribution of solute in the presence of vacancy clusters in magnesium alloys. As the size of the vacancy cluster increases, chemical binding becomes more important relative to stress. By affecting the diffusivity of vacancies and vacancy clusters, solute atoms facilitate clustering and stabilize the resulting vacancy clusters, increasing their potential to promote solute segregation and to serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites during precipitation. Experimental observation of solute segrega…
Molecular static simulations of 190 symmetric tilt grain boundaries in HCP metals were used to understand the energetics of vacancy segregation, which is important for designing stable interfaces in harsh environments. Simulation results show that the local arrangements of grain boundaries and the resulting structural units have a significant influence on the magnitude of vacancy binding energies, and the site-to-site variation within each boundary is substantial. Comparing the vacancy binding energies for each site in different c/a ratio materials shows that the binding energy increases signi…
We investigate the behavior of oxygen vacancies in three different metal-oxide semiconductors (rutile and anatase TiO2, monoclinic WO3, and tetragonal ZrO2) using a recently proposed hybrid density-functional method in which the fraction of exact exchange is material-dependent but obtained ab initio in a self-consistent scheme. In particular, we calculate charge-transition levels relative to the oxygen-vacancy defect and compare computed optical and thermal excitation/emission energies with the available experimental results, shedding light on the underlying excitation mechanisms and related m…
The uranium mononitride (UN) is a material considered as a promising candidate for Generation-IV nuclear reactor fuels. Unfortunately, oxygen in air affects UN fuel performance and stability. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of oxygen adsorption and further UN oxidation in the bulk and at surface. Recently, we performed a detailed study on oxygen interaction with UN surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We were able to identify an atomistic mechanism of UN surface oxidation consisting of several important steps, starting with the oxygen molecule diss…
Similar effects of metal and boron vacancies on phonon scattering and lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_l$) of ZrB$_2$ and HfB$_2$ are reported. These defects challenge the conventional understanding that associates larger impacts to bigger defects. We find the underlying reason to be a strong local perturbation caused by the boron vacancy that substantially changes the interatomic force constants. In contrast, a long ranged but weaker perturbation is seen in the case metal vacancies. We show that these behaviours originate from a mixed metallic and covalent bonding nature in the metal diboride…
The energy of segregation of Cr from the bulk to the topmost surface layer in dilute Fe-Cr alloys is endothermic but small. On the other hand, the segregation energy from the bulk to the subsurface layer is not only endothermic but relatively large. Thus, the subsurface layer presents a huge barrier, not only for the segregation of Cr from the bulk to the surface, but also for its diffusion from the surface into the bulk. This means that the topmost layer alone cannot be used to determine the barrier for Cr segregation (the segregation energy), which is determined in these alloys by the subsur…
Atomistic calculations were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of Pd crystals as a combined function of structural defects, hydrogen concentration and high temperature. These factors are found to individually induce degradation in the mechanical strength of Pd in a monotonous manner. In addition, defects such as vacancies and grain boundaries could provide a driving force for hydrogen segregation, thus enhance the tendency for their trapping. The simulations show that hydrogen maintains the highest localization at grain boundaries at ambient temperatures. This finding correla…
Ab initio calculations and statistical mechanics are combined to elucidate the thermodynamics of H vacancies in MgH2. A general method based on a grand-canonical ensemble of defect configurations is introduced to model the exchange of hydrogen between crystalline MgH2 and gas-phase H2. We find that, at temperatures and hydrogen partial pressures of practical interest, MgH2 is capable of accommodating only very small concentrations of hydrogen vacancies, which consist mainly of isolated defects rather than vacancy clusters, contrary to what is expected from a simple energetic analysis.
Determining the types and concentrations of vacancies present in intentionally doped GaN is a notoriously difficult and long-debated problem. Here we use an unconventional approach, based on thermal transport modeling, to determine the prevalence of vacancies in previous measurements. This allows us to provide conclusive evidence of the recent hypothesis that gallium vacancies in ammonothermally grown samples can be complexed with hydrogen. Our calculations for O-doped and Mg-O co-doped samples yield a consistent picture interlinking dopant and vacancy concentration, carrier density, and therm…
Defects creation and annihilation is a fundamental concept in device fabrication. This report studies the optical bandgap modification in MgO by MeV Ni ion irradiation-induced defect states between valance and conduction band. Ion implantation on MgO single crystal produces substitutional defect states along with F (anionic vacancy center), $F_2$, other oxygen vacancy center and V (cationic vacancy center) centers confirmed from absorption and photoluminescence spectra that can be applied as filament in valance charge memory based resistive random access memories. The variation of optical band…
{\it Ab initio} calculations within density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation have been performed to study the effects of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure and magnetism in undoped V$_2$O$_{5-x}$ ($0 < x < 0.5$). It is found that the introduction of oxygen vacancies would induce ferromagnetism in V$_2$O$_{5-x}$ with the magnetization being proportional to the O vacancy concentration $x$. The calculated electronic structure reveals that the valence electrons released by the introduction of oxygen vacancies would occupy mainly the neighboring V $d_{xy}$-dominan…
