We present a new analysis of NuSTAR and Suzaku observations of the black hole Cygnus X-1 in the intermediate state. The analysis uses kerrC, a new model for analyzing spectral and spectropolarimetric X-ray observations of black holes. kerrC builds on a large library of simulated black holes in X-ray binaries. The model accounts for the X-ray emission from a geometrically thin, optically thick accretion disk, the propagation of the X-rays through the curved black hole spacetime, the reflection off the accretion disk, and the Comptonization of photons in coronae of different 3-D shapes and physical properties before and after the reflection. We present the results from using kerrC for the analysis of archival NuSTAR and Suzaku observations taken on May 27-28, 2015. The best wedge-shaped corona gives a better fit than the cone-shaped corona. Although we included cone-shaped coronae in the funnel regions above and below the black hole to resemble to some degree the common assumption of a compact lamppost corona hovering above and/or below the black hole, the fit chooses a very large version of this corona that makes it possible to Comptonize a sufficiently large fraction of the accretion disk photons to explain the observed power law emission. The analysis indicates a dimensionless black hole spin parameter a between 0.86 and 0.92. The kerrC model provides new insights about the radial distribution of the energy flux of returning and coronal emission irradiating the accretion disk. kerrC furthermore predicts small polarization fractions around 1% in the 2-8 keV energy range of the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer.
Evidence is presented indicating that in the hard state of Cygnus X-1, the coronal mag- netic field might be below equipartition with radiation (suggesting that the corona is not powered by magnetic field dissipation) and that the ion temperature in the corona is significantly lower than what predicted by ADAF like models. It is also shown that the current estimates of the jet power set interesting contraints on the jet velocity (which is at least mildly relativistic), the accretion efficiency (which is large in both spectral states), and the nature of the X-ray emitting region (which is unlik…
Cygnus X-1 was the first X-ray source widely accepted to be a black hole candidate and remains among the most studied astronomical objects in its class. The detection of non-thermal radio, hard X-rays and gamma rays reveals the fact that this kind of objects are capable of accelerating particles up to very high energies. In order to explain the electromagnetic emission from Cygnus X-1 in the low-hard state we present a model of a black hole corona with both relativistic lepton and hadron content. We characterize the corona as a two-temperature hot plasma plus a mixed non-thermal population in …
Cygnus X-1 is the candidate with the highest probability of containing a black hole among the X-ray binary systems in the Galaxy. It is also by far the most often studied of these objects. Recently, the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory Imager onboard then Integral satellite ({\it INTEGRAL}/IBIS) detected strong polarization in the high-energy radiation of this source, between 400 keV and 2 MeV. This radiation has been attributed to a jet launched by the black hole. We consider whether the corona around the black hole might be the site of production of the polarized emission inst…
The microquasar Cygnus X-3 was detected at high energies by the gamma-ray space telescopes AGILE and Fermi. The gamma-ray emission is transient, modulated with the orbital period and seems related to major radio flares, i.e. to the relativistic jet. The GeV gamma-ray flux can be substantially attenuated by internal absorption with the ambient X-rays. In this study, we examine quantitatively the effect of pair production in Cygnus X-3 and put constraints on the location of the gamma-ray source. Cygnus X-3 exhibits complex temporal and spectral patterns in X-rays. During gamma-ray flares, the X-…
The different electron distributions in the hard and soft spectral states (HS and SS) of BH binaries could be caused by kinetic processes and changing because of varying physical conditions in the corona. In presence of a magnetic field in the corona, the electron distribution can appear thermal, even when acceleration mechanisms would produce non thermal distributions. This is due to fast and efficient thermalization through synchrotron self-absorption. We have analyzed data from 6 years of observations of Cygnus X-1 with the INTEGRAL observatory and produced 12 high-quality, stacked broad-ba…
Cygnus X-1 is one of the brightest X-ray sources observed and shows the X-ray intensity variations on time scales from milliseconds to months in both the soft and hard X-rays. The accretion onto the black hole is believed to be wind fed due to focused stellar wind from the binary companion HDE-226868. We aim to understand the physical mechanism responsible for the short timescale X-ray variability ($<$100 s) of the source in its Hard/Low state. We compute the 2D relativistic hydrodynamic simulation of the low angular momentum accretion flow with a time dependent outer boundary condition that r…
We present a multi-epoch hard X-ray analysis of Cygnus X-1 in its soft state based on four observations with NuSTAR. Despite the basic similarity of the observed spectra, there is clear spectral variability between epochs. To investigate this variability, we construct a model incorporating both the standard disk-corona continuum and relativistic reflection from the accretion disk, based on prior NuSTAR work on Cygnus X-1, and apply this model to each epoch independently. We find excellent consistency for the black hole spin, and the iron abundance of the accretion disk, which are expected to r…
The X-ray luminosity of black holes is produced through the accretion of material from their companion stars. Depending on the mass of the donor star, accretion of the material falling onto the black hole through the inner Lagrange point of the system or accretion by the strong stellar wind can occur. Cygnus X-1 is a high mass X-ray binary system, where the black hole is powered by accretion of the stellar wind of its supergiant companion star HDE226868. As the companion is close to filling its Roche lobe, the wind is not symmetric, but strongly focused towards the black hole. Chandra-HETGS ob…
Black-hole binary (BHB) systems comprise a stellar-mass black hole and a closely orbiting companion star. Matter is transferred from the companion to the black hole, forming an accretion disk, corona and jet structures. The resulting release of gravitational energy leads to emission of X-rays. The radiation is affected by special/general relativistic effects, and can serve as a probe of the properties of the black hole and surrounding environment, if the accretion geometry is properly identified. Two competing models describe the disk-corona geometry for the hard spectral state of BHBs, based …
Unified X-ray spectral and timing studies of Cygnus X-1 in the low/hard and hard intermediate state were conducted in a model-independent manner, using broadband Suzaku data acquired on 25 occasions from 2005 to 2009 with a total exposure of ~ 450 ks. The unabsorbed 0.1--500 keV source luminosity changed over 0.8--2.8% of the Eddington limit for 14.8 solar masses. Variations on short (1--2 seconds) and long (days to months) time scales require at least three separate components: a constant component localized below ~2 keV, a broad soft one dominating in the 2--10 keV range, and a hard one most…
Recent observations of AdLIGO and Virgo have shown that the spin measurements in binary black hole (BH) systems are typically small, which is consistent with the predictions by the classical isolated binary evolution channel. In this standard formation channel, the progenitor of the first-born BH is assumed to have efficient angular momentum transport. The BH spins in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), however, have been found consistently to be extremely high. In order to explain the high BH spins, the inefficient angular momentum transport inside the BH progenitor is required. This requiremen…
The interpretation of the X-ray spectra of X-ray binaries during their hard states requires a hot, optically thin medium. There are several accretion disc models in the literature that account for this aspect. However, none is designed to simultaneously explain the presence of powerful jets detected during these states. A new quasi-keplerian hot accretion disc solution, a Jet Emitting disc (JED hereafter), which is part of a global disc-jet MHD structure producing stationary super-alfvénic ejection, is investigated here. Its radiative and energetic properties are then compared to the observati…
We present a timing analysis of threeRossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 with the propagating mass accretion rate fluctuations model PROPFLUC. The model simultaneously predicts power spectra, time lags, and coherence of the variability as a function of energy. The observations cover the soft and the hard state of the source, and the transition between the two. We find good agreement between model pre-dictions and data in the hard and in the soft state. Our analysis suggests that in the soft state the fluctuations propagate in an optically thin hot flow …
We execute a detailed spectral-timing study of Cygnus X-1 in the low/hard, intermediate and high/soft states with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope observations. The broad band energy spectra fit well with the "truncated disk model" with the inner boundary of the accretion disk stays within $\sim$10 \textit R$_{\rm g}$ and moves inward as the source softens. Through studying of PDS, rms and Fourier-frequency component resolved spectroscopy, we find that the X-ray variations are generated in two different regions for each state. We discover that the major role that contributes to the X-ray va…

Based on the results of applying the extended ADC emission model for low mass X-ray binaries to three Z-track sources: GX340+0, GX5-1 and CygX-2, we propose an explanation of the CygnusX-2 like Z-track sources. The Normal Branch is dominated by the increasing radiation pressure of the neutron star caused by a mass accretion rate that increases between the soft apex and the hard apex. The radiation pressure continues to increase on the Horizontal Branch becoming several times super-Eddington. We suggest that this disrupts the inner accretion disk and that part of the accretion flow is diverted …
Context: Cygnus X-1 is a black hole X-ray binary system in which the black hole captures and accretes gas from the strong stellar wind emitted by its supergiant O9.7 companion star. The irradiation of the supergiant star essentially determines the flow properties of the stellar wind and the X-ray luminosity from the system. The results of three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of wind-fed X-ray binary systems reported in recent work reveal that the ionizing feedback of the X-ray irradiation leads to the existence of two stable states with either a soft or a hard spectrum. Aims: We discus…
We report the detection of a short-lived narrow quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ~88 mHz in an Insight-HXMT observation during the soft state of the persistent black hole high mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1. This QPO is significantly detected in all the three instruments of Insight-HXMT, so in the broad energy range 1-250 keV. The fractional rms of the QPO does not show significant variations above 3 keV (~5%) while decreases at lower energy (~2%). We show that this QPO is different from the type-A, -B, and -C QPOs usually observed in black hole X-ray binaries. We compare QPOs at similar freq…
The Cygnus X-1 Puzzle: Implications of X-ray Polarization Measurements in the Soft and Hard States on the Properties of the Accretion Flow and the Emission Mechanisms
Thanks to recurrent observations of the black hole binary Cyg X-1 carried out over 15 years the INTEGRAL satellite has collected the largest data set in the hard X-ray band for this source. We have analyzed these data, complemented by data collected by other X-ray satellites and radio flux at 15 GHz. To characterize the spectral and variability properties of the system we have examined parameters such as the hard X-ray flux, photon index and fractional variability. Our main result is that the 2D distribution of the photon index and flux determined for the 22-100 keV band forms six clusters. Th…
We analyse the aperiodic flaring features, also known as shots, observed in Cyg X-1 in the 0.1-80 keV energy band using a 6.39 ks simultaneous observation with AstroSat and NICER. We detect 49 simultaneous shots in the soft and hard X-ray bands with NICER and AstroSat-LAXPC, respectively. We observe the shot profile for the first time in soft X-rays (0.1-3 keV), which shows a spectral peak at $\sim$2 keV. Using time-averaged spectroscopy, we measured the truncation of the inner accretion disk at $6.7\pm0.2$ gravitational radii. The shot-phase resolved spectroscopy allowed us to identify the or…
Relativistic reflection features in the X-ray spectra of black hole binaries and AGNs are thought to be produced through illumination of a cold accretion disk by a hot corona. In this work, we assume that the corona has the shape of an infinitesimally thin disk with its central axis the same as the rotational axis of the black hole. The corona can either be static or corotate with the accretion disk. We calculate the disk's emissivity profiles and iron line shapes for a set of coronal radii and heights. We incorporate these emissivity profiles into RELXILL_NK and we simulate some observations …
We report a polarimetric constraint on the hard X-ray synchrotron jet emission from the Cygnus X-1 black-hole binary system. The observational data were obtained using the PoGO+ hard X-ray polarimeter in July 2016, when Cygnus X-1 was in the hard state. We have previously reported that emission from an extended corona with a low polarization fraction is dominating, and that the polarization angle is perpendicular to the disk surface. In the soft gamma-ray regime, a highly-polarized synchrotron jet is reported with INTEGRAL observations. To constrain the polarization fraction and flux of such a…
We present simultaneous Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR ) and Suzaku observations of the X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 in the hard state. This is the first time this state has been observed in Cyg X-1 with NuSTAR, which enables us to study the reflection and broad-band spectra in unprecedented detail. We confirm that the iron line cannot be fit with a combination of narrow lines and absorption features, and instead requires a relativistically blurred profile in combination with a narrow line and absorption from the companion wind. We use the reflection models of Garcia et al. (2014) to…

Using Suzaku and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we have conducted a series of four simultaneous observations of the galactic black hole candidate Cyg X-1 in what were historically faint and spectrally hard low states. Additionally, all of these observations occurred near superior conjunction with our line of sight to the X-ray source passing through the dense phases of the focused wind from the mass donating secondary. One of our observations was also simultaneous with observations by the Chandra-High Energy Transmission Grating. These latter spectra are crucial for revealing the ionized abs…
We present the first X-ray reverberation mass measurement of a stellar-mass black hole. Accreting stellar-mass and supermassive black holes display characteristic spectral features resulting from reprocessing of hard X-rays by the accretion disc, such as an Fe K$α$ line and a Compton hump. This emission probes of the innermost region of the accretion disc through general relativistic distortions to the line profile. However, these spectral distortions are insensitive to black hole mass, since they depend on disc geometry in units of gravitational radii. Measuring the reverberation lag resultin…
The bright and highly variable X-ray and radio source known as Cygnus X-3 was among the first X-ray sources discovered, yet it remains in many ways an enigma. Its known to consist of a massive, Wolf-Rayet primary in an extremely tight orbit with a compact object. Yet one of the most basic of parameters - the mass of the compact object - is not known. Nor is it even clear whether its is a neutron star or a black hole. In this Paper we present our analysis of the broad-band high-energy continua covering a substantial range in luminosity and spectral morphology. We apply these results to a recent…
Gamma-ray observations of microquasars at high and very-high energies can provide valuable information of the acceleration processes inside the jets, the jet-environment interaction and the disk-jet coupling. Two high-mass microquasars have been deeply studied to shed light on these aspects: Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3. Both systems display the canonical hard and soft X-ray spectral states of black hole transients, where the radiation is dominated by non-thermal emission from the corona and jets and by thermal emission from the disk, respectively. Here, we report on the detection of Cygnus X-1 a…
The compact primary in the X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole to be established via dynamical observations. We have recently determined accurate values for its mass and distance, and for the orbital inclination angle of the binary. Building on these results, which are based on our favored (asynchronous) dynamical model, we have measured the radius of the inner edge of the black hole's accretion disk by fitting its thermal continuum spectrum to a fully relativistic model of a thin accretion disk. Assuming that the spin axis of the black hole is aligned with the orbital angular mom…
We present the results of multi-year gamma-ray observations by the AGILE satellite of the black hole binary system Cygnus X-1. In a previous investigation we focused on gamma-ray observations of Cygnus X-1 in the hard state during the period mid-2007/2009. Here we present the results of the gamma-ray monitoring of Cygnus X-1 during the period 2010/mid-2012 carried out for which includes a remarkably prolonged `soft state' phase (June 2010 -- May 2011). Previous 1--10 MeV observations of Cyg X-1 in this state hinted at a possible existence of a non-thermal particle component with substantial mo…
The way in which the X-ray photon index, Γ, varies as a function of count rate is a strong diagnostic of the emission processes and emission geometry around accreting compact objects. Here we present the results from a study using a new, and simple, method designed to improve sensitivity to the measurement of the variability of Γ on very short time-scales. We have measured Γ in ~2 million spectra, extracted from observations with a variety of different accretion rates and spectral states, on time-scales as short as 16 ms for the high mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1, and have cross-correlated thes…
Below an accretion rate of approximately a few per cent of the Eddington accretion rate, X-ray binary systems are not usually found in the soft spectral state. However, at accretion rates a factor of a few lower still, in the hard state, there is another spectral transition which is well observed but not well understood. Below ~0.5-1 per cent of the Eddington accretion rate (m_crit), the spectral index hardens with increasing accretion rate, but above m_crit, although still in the hard state, the spectral index softens with increasing accretion rate. Here we use a combination of X-ray spectral…
We present observations of a transient He-like Fe K alpha absorption line in Suzaku observations of the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 on 2011 October 5 near superior conjunction during the high/soft state, which enable us to map the full evolution from the start and the end of the episodic accretion phenomena or dips for the first time. We model the X-ray spectra during the event and trace their evolution. The absorption line is rather weak in the first half of the observation, but instantly deepens for ~10 ks, and weakens thereafter. The overall change in equivalent width is a factor of ~3, pe…
We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and Doppler tomography of V1341 Cygni, the optical counterpart to the neutron star low mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2. We derive a radial velocity curve for the secondary star, finding a projected radial velocity semi-amplitude of K2 = 79 +/- 3 km/s, leading to a mass function of 0.51 +/- 0.06 Msun, ~30% lower than the previous estimate. We tentatively attribute the lower value of K2 (compared to that obtained by other authors) to variations in the X-ray irradiation of the secondary star at different epochs of observations. The limited phase coverag…
Cygnus X-3 is an accreting high-mass X-ray binary composed of a Wolf-Rayet star and an unknown compact object, possibly a black hole. The gamma-ray space telescope Fermi found definitive evidence that high-energy emission is produced in this system. We propose a scenario to explain the GeV gamma-ray emission in Cygnus X-3. In this model, energetic electron-positron pairs are accelerated at a specific location in the relativistic jet, possibly related to a recollimation shock, and upscatter the stellar photons to high energies. The comparison with Fermi observations shows that the jet should be…
Cygnus X-1 is a well-studied persistent black hole X-ray binary. Recently, the three parameters needed to estimate the black hole spin of this system, namely the black hole mass $M$, the orbital inclination $i$ and the source distance $D$, have been updated. In this work we redetermine the spin parameter using the continuum-fitting technique for those updated parameter values. Based on the assumption that the spin axis of the black hole is aligned with the orbital plane, we fit the thermal disk component to a fully relativistic thin accretion disk model. The error in the spin estimate arising …
We report the appearance of a new radio source at a projected offset of 460 pc from the nucleus of Cygnus A. The flux density of the source (which we designate Cygnus A-2) rose from an upper limit of <0.5 mJy in 1989 to 4 mJy in 2016 (nu=8.5 GHz), but is currently not varying by more than a few percent per year. The radio luminosity of the source is comparable to the most luminous known supernovae, it is compact in VLBA observations down to a scale of 4 pc, and it is coincident with a near-infrared point source seen in pre-existing adaptive optics and HST observations. The most likely interpre…
X-ray pulses with millisecond-long FWHM have been detected in RXTE (Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer) observations of Cyg X-1. Their identity as short-timescale variations in the X-ray luminosity of the source, and not stochastic variability in the X-ray flux, is established by their simultaneous occurrence and similar pulse structure in two independent energy bandpasses. The light-time distance corresponding to the timescale of their FWHM indicates that they originate in the inner region of the accretion disk around the system's black hole component. The fluence in the pulses can equal or exceed t…
The black hole binary Cygnus X-1 was observed in late-2012 with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Suzaku, providing spectral coverage over the ~1-300 keV range. The source was in the soft state with a multi-temperature blackbody, power-law, and reflection components along with absorption from highly ionized material in the system. The high throughput of NuSTAR allows for a very high quality measurement of the complex iron line region as well as the rest of the reflection component. The iron line is clearly broadened and is well-described by a relativistic blurring model, p…
Non-thermal X-ray emission in compact accretion engines can be interpreted to result from magnetic dissipation in an optically thin magnetized corona above an optically thick accretion disk. If coronal magnetic field originates in the disk and the disk is turbulent, then only magnetic structures large enough for their turbulent shredding time to exceed their buoyant rise time survive the journey to the corona. We use this concept and a physical model to constrain the minimum fraction of magnetic energy above the critical scale for buoyancy as a function of the observed coronal to bolometric em…
Existence of relatively cool ($k_B T \lesssim 10~{\rm keV}$) and optically thick ($τ\gtrsim 3$) coronae are inferred above super-Eddington accretion flow such as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), GRS 1915+105, and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1), which contrasts the cases in sub-Eddington accretion flows, which are associated with coronae with $k_B T \sim 100~{\rm keV}$ and $τ\sim 1$. To understand their physical origin, we investigate the emission properties of the corona which is formed by the gas blown off the super-Eddington inner disk by radiation pressure. We assume that the coro…
Active galactic nuclei host an accretion disc with an X-ray producing corona around a supermassive black hole. In bright sources, such as the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335, reflection of the coronal emission off the accretion disc has been observed. Reflection produces spectral features such as an iron emission line, which allow for properties of the inner accretion disc and the corona to be constrained. We perform a multi-epoch spectral analysis of all XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and NuSTAR observations of Mrk 335, and we optimize our fitting procedure to unveil correlations between the Eddington ratio an…
We present the analysis of the broadened, flourescent iron Kalpha line in simultaneous XMM-Newton and RXTE data from the black hole Cygnus X-1. The XMM-Newton data were taken in a modified version of the timing mode of the EPIC-pn camera. In this mode the lower energy threshold of the instrument is increased to 2.8 keV to avoid telemetry drop outs due to the brightness of the source, while at the same time preserving the signal-to-noise ratio in the Fe Kalpha band. We find that the best-fit spectrum consists of the sum of an exponentially cut off power-law and relativistically smeared, ionized…
The neutron star X-ray binary (NSXRB) Cygnus X-2 was observed by the Swift satellite 51 times over a 4 month period in 2008 with the XRT, UVOT, and BAT instruments. During this campaign, we observed Cyg X-2 in all three branches of the Z track (horizontal, normal, and flaring branches). We find that the NUV emission is uncorrelated with the soft X-ray flux detected with the XRT, and is anticorrelated with the BAT X-ray flux and the hard X-ray color. The observed anticorrelation is inconsistent with simple models of reprocessing as the source of the NUV emission. The anticorrelation may be a co…
Polarization measurements of the microquasar Cygnus X-1 exist at gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical and radio frequencies. The gamma-ray emission has been shown to be highly linearly polarized. Here, we present new infrared polarimetric data of Cygnus X-1 taken with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias and the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. We show that the broadband, radio to gamma-ray flux spectrum and polarization spectrum in the hard state are largely consistent with a simple phenomenological model of a strongly polarized synchrotron jet, an unpolarized Comptonized corona and a moderately pol…
Neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries are hypothesised to emit continuous gravitational waves that may be detectable by ground-based observatories. The torque balance model predicts that a higher accretion rate produces larger-amplitude gravitational waves, hence low mass X-ray binaries with high X-ray flux are promising targets for gravitational wave searches. The detection of X-ray pulsations would identify the spin frequency of these neutron stars, and thereby improve the sensitivity of continuous gravitational-wave searches by reducing the volume of the search parameter space. We perfor…
We investigate the accretion process in high-luminosity AGNs (HLAGNs) in the scenario of the disk evaporation model. Based on this model, the thin disk can extend down to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) at accretion rates higher than $0.02\dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$; while the corona is weak since part of the coronal gas is cooled by strong inverse Compton scattering of the disk photons. This implies that the corona cannot produce as strong X-ray radiation as observed in HLAGNs with large Eddington ratio. In addition to the viscous heating, other heating to the corona is necessary to interpr…
We report results of one-day simultaneous multiwavelength observations of Cygnus X-2 using XMM, Chandra, the European VLBI Network and the XMM Optical Monitor. During the observations, the source did not exhibit Z-track movement, but remained in the vicinity of the soft apex. It was in a radio quiescent/quiet state of < 150 microJy. Strong dip events were seen as 25% reductions in X-ray intensity. The use of broadband CCD spectra in combination with narrow-band grating spectra has now demonstrated for the first time that these dipping events in Cygnus X-2 are caused by absorption in cool mater…
