We introduce a method based on matrix product states (MPS) for computing spectral functions of (quasi) one-dimensional spin chains, working directly in momentum space in the thermodynamic limit. We simulate the time evolution after applying a momentum operator to an MPS ground state by working with the momentum superposition of a window MPS. We show explicitly for the spin-1 Heisenberg chain that the growth of entanglement is smaller in momentum space, even inside a two-particle continuum, such that we can attain very accurate spectral functions with relatively small bond dimension. We apply our method to compute spectral lineshapes of the gapless XXZ chain and the square-lattice J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a six-leg cylinder.
Several density-matrix renormalization group methods have been proposed to compute the momentum- and frequency-resolved dynamical correlation functions of low-dimensional strongly correlated systems. The most relevant approaches are discussed in this contribution. Their applications in various studies of quasi-one-dimensional strongly correlated systems (spin chains, itinerant electron systems, electron-phonon systems) are reviewed.
We report particle-hole pair excitations in a cuprate insulator in the intermediate regimes of momentum-transfers using high energy inelastic x-ray scattering. The excitation spectra show dispersive features near the Mott edge which shed light on the momentum structure of the upper Hubbard band in cuprates. We briefly discuss the potential use of such a technique to study the momentum dependence of unoccupied bands and q-dependent charge fluctuations in complex insulators.
We consider momentum resolved tunneling between a Luttinger liquid and a two dimensional electron gas as a function of transverse magnetic field. We include the effects of an anomalous exponent and Zeeman splitting on both the Luttinger liquid and the two dimensional electron gas. We show that there are six dispersing features that should be observed in magneto-tunneling, in contrast with the four features that would be seen in a non-interacting one dimensional electron gas. The strength of these features varies with the anomalous exponent, being most pronounced when $γ_ρ=0$. We argue that thi…
We address recent momentum resolved radio frequency (RF) experiments on ultracold trapped Fermi gases of $^{40}$K. We show that momentum resolved RF probes provide measurements of the centrally important fermionic spectral function. They also serve to remove ambiguity plaguing the interpretation of momentum integrated RF experiments by establishing a clear dispersion signature of pairing. We find that the temperature dependence of the spectral function is dramatic at unitarity, and, importantly, smooth from above to below $T_c$ throughout BCS-BEC crossover. This should be tested experimentally…
We report momentum resolved charge excitations in a one dimensional (1-D) Mott insulator studied using high resolution (~ 325 meV) inelastic x-ray scattering over the entire Brillouin zone for the first time. Excitations at the insulating gap edge are found to be highly dispersive (momentum dependent)compared to excitations observed in two dimensional Mott insulators. The observed dispersion in 1-D is consistent with charge excitations involving holons which is unique to spin-1/2 quantum chain systems. These results point to the potential utility of inelastic x-ray scattering in providing valu…
We investigate a momentum-resolved Raman spectroscopy technique which is able to probe the one-body spectral function and the quasi-particle states of a gas of strongly interacting ultracold atoms. This technique is inspired by Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy, a powerful experimental probe of electronic states in solid-state systems. Quantitative examples of experimentally accessible spectra are given for the most significant regimes along the BEC-BCS crossover. When the theory is specialized to RF spectroscopy, agreement is found with recent experimental data. The main advantages o…
We calculate the electron spectral functions at the edges of the Moore-Read Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states, in the clean limit. We show that their qualitative differences can be probed using momentum resolved tunneling, thus providing a method to unambiguously distinguish which one is realized in the fractional quantum Hall state observed at filling factor $ν=5/2$. We further argue that edge reconstruction, which may be less important in the first excited Landau level (LL) than in the lowest LL, can also be detected this way if present.
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to characterize the dynamics of the energy gap in superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi2212). Photoexcitation drives the system into a nonequilibrium pseudogap state: Near the Brillouin zone diagonal (inside the normal-state Fermi arc), the gap completely closes for a pump fluence beyond F = 15 μJ/cm^2; toward the Brillouin zone face (outside the Fermi arc), it remains open to at least 24 μJ/cm^2. This strongly anisotropic gap response may indicate multiple competing ordering tendencies in Bi2212. Despite these contrasts, the gap rec…
LDA+DMFT, the merger of density functional theory in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory, has been mostly employed to calculate k-integrated spectra accessible by photoemission spectroscopy. In this paper, we calculate k-resolved spectral functions by LDA+DMFT. To this end, we employ the Nth order muffin-tin (NMTO) downfolding to set up an effective low-energy Hamiltonian with three t_2g orbitals. This downfolded Hamiltonian is solved by DMFT yielding k-dependent spectra. Our results show renormalized quasiparticle bands over a broad energy range from -0.7 eV to +0.…
It is of central importance to probe the \emph{local} spectral function $A(\mathbf{k},ω)$ of a strongly interacting Fermi gas in a trap. Momentum resolved rf spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be able to probe the trap averaged $A(\mathbf{k},ω)$. However, the usefulness of this technique was limited by the trap inhomogeneity. Independent of a specific theory, here we propose that by studying the momentum resolved rf spectra of the minority fermions of a phase separated, population imbalanced Fermi gas at low temperature, one can effectively extract $A(\mathbf{k},ω)$ of a homogeneous superfl…
We study tunneling between two nearby cleaved edge quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. Due to Coulomb forces between electrons, the wires form a strongly-interacting pair of Luttinger liquids. We calculate the low-temperature differential tunneling conductance, in which singular features map out the dispersion relations of the fractionalized quasiparticles of the system. The velocities of several such spin-charge separated excitations can be explicitly observed. Moreover, the proposed measurement directly demonstrates the splintering of the tunneling electrons into a multi-particl…
We present results for the momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function of the low-dimensional system TiOCl in the insulating state, obtained by a combination of ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Variational Cluster (VCA) calculations. This approach allows to combine a realistic band structure and a thorough treatment of the strong correlations. We show that it is important to include a realistic two-dimensional band structure of TiOCl into the effective strongly-correlated models in order to explain the spectral weight behavior seen in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) e…
We investigate the excited state electronic structure of the model phase transition system In/Si(111) using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) with an XUV laser source at 500 kHz . Excited state band mapping is used to characterize the normally unoccupied electronic structure above the Fermi level in both structural phases of indium nanowires on Si(111): the metallic (4x1) and the gapped (8x2) phases. The extracted band positions are compared with the band structure calculated using density functional theory (DFT) within both the LDA and GW approximations…
We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of high-Tc cuprates. Momentum-resolved charge excitations in the CuO2 plane are examined from parent Mott insulators to carrier-doped superconductors. The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the s…
Motivated by recent tunneling experiments in the parallel wire geometry, we calculate results for momentum resolved tunneling into a short one-dimensional wire, containing a small number of electrons. We derive some general theorems about the momentum dependence, and we carry out exact calculations for up to N=4 electrons in the final state, for a system with screened Coulomb interactions that models the situation of the experiments. We also investigate the limit of large $N$ using a Luttinger-liquid type analysis. We consider the low-density regime, where the system is close to the Wigner cry…
Transport currents in solids decay through collisions of quasiparticles with each other and with defects or boundaries. Since information about collisional lifetimes is difficult to obtain, most calculations of transport properties rely on parameters that are not known independently. Here, we use magnon lifetime data for the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4 to calculate the magnon-mediated thermal conductivity without any adjustable parameters, thereby quantifying the influence of scattering from domain boundaries on transport. Related strategies have the potential to enhance our unders…
We present a computational technique to calculate time and momentum resolved non-equilibrium spectral density of correlated systems using a tunneling approach akin scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The important difference is that our probe is extended, basically a copy of the sample, allowing one to extract the momentum information of the excitations. We illustrate the method by measuring the spectrum of a Mott-insulating extended Hubbard chain after a sudden quench with the aid of time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) calculations. We demonstrate that the system realizes…
Neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy was used to monitor the temperature evolution of the linewidths of transverse acoustic phonons in lead across the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, over an extended range of the Brillouin zone. For phonons with energies below the superconducting energy gap, a linewidth reduction of maximum amplitude $\sim 6 μ$eV was observed below $T_c$. The electron-phonon contribution to the phonon lifetime extracted from these data is in satisfactory overall agreement with {\it ab-initio} lattice-dynamical calculations, but significant deviations are fou…
Interacting Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling are responsible for many intriguing phenomena such as topological superfluids and Majorana fermions. Here we characterize theoretically fermionic pairing in a strongly interacting spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas, by using momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy. We develop a strong-coupling $T$-matrix theory and present a phase diagram near the unitary resonance limit. A smooth transition from atomic to molecular responses in the momentum-resolved spectroscopy is predicted, with a clear signature of anisotropic pairing at and below resonance…
Multiple-$Q$ magnetic states, such as a skyrmion crystal, become a source of unusual transport phenomena and dynamics. Recent theoretical and experimental studies clarify that such multiple-$Q$ states ubiquitously appear under different crystal structures in metals and insulators. Toward a systematic understanding of the formation of the multiple-$Q$ states in various crystal systems, in this theoretical study, we present a low-energy effective spin model with anisotropic exchange interactions in momentum space. We summarize specific six symmetry rules for nonzero symmetric and antisymmetric a…
We study, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the evolution of the electronic structure in URu2Si2 at the Gamma, Z and X high-symmetry points from the high-temperature Kondo-screened regime to the low-temperature `hidden-order' (HO) state. At all temperatures and symmetry points, we find structures resulting from the interaction between heavy and light bands, related to the Kondo lattice formation. At the X point, we directly measure a hybridization gap of 11 meV already open at temperatures above the ordered phase. Strikingly, we find that while the HO induces pro…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the two-leg ladder system Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ with $x$= 0 and 11. "Underlying Fermi surfaces" determined from low energy spectral weight mapping indicates the quasi-one dimensional nature of the electronic structure. Energy gap caused by the charge density wave has been observed for $x$=0 and the gap tends to close with Ca substitution. The absence of a quasi-particle peak even in $x$=11 is in contrast to the two-dimensional high-$T_c$ cuprates, implying strong carrier localization related to the hole crystalization.
Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) superconductors to investigate momentum dependence of electron coupling with collective excitations (modes). Two coexisting energy scales are clearly revealed over a large momentum space for the first time in the superconducting state of an overdoped Bi2212 superconductor. These two energy scales exhibit distinct momentum dependence: one keeps its energy near 78 meV over a large momentum space while the other changes its energy from $\sim$40 meV near the antinodal regio…
The π-plasmon dispersion in graphene was scrutinized by momentum(q)-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy with an improved q resolution and found to display the square root of q dispersion characteristic of the collective excitation of two-dimensional electron systems, in contrast with previous experimental and theoretical studies which reported a linear q dispersion. Our theoretical elaborations on the q-dependent spectra affirm this square root of q relation and further unveil an in-plane electronic anisotropy. The physical property of the π plasmon is thoroughly compared to that of the…
We analyze the momentum- and temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibilities and magnetic exchange interaction in paramagnetic bcc iron by a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). By considering a general derivation of the orbital-resolved effective model for spin degrees of freedom for Hund's metals, we relate momentum-dependent susceptibilities in the paramagnetic phase to the magnetic exchange. We then calculate non-uniform orbital-resolved susceptibilities at high-symmetry wave vectors by constructing appropriate supercells in the DMFT…
We investigate Dirac fermions on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Landau levels (LLs) are observed in the tunneling spectra in a magnetic field. In contrast to LLs of conventional electrons, a field independent LL appears at the Dirac point, which is a hallmark of Dirac fermions. A scaling analysis of LLs based on the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition allowed us to determine the dispersion of the surface band. Near the Fermi energy, fine peaks mixed with LLs appear in the spectra, which may be responsible for the anomalous magneto-fing…
Many remarkable properties of quantum materials emerge from states with intricate coupling between the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Ultrafast photo-excitations of these materials hold great promise for understanding and controlling the properties of these states. Here we introduce time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) as a means of measuring charge, spin and orbital excitations out of equilibrium. These excitations encode the correlations and interactions that determine the detailed properties of the states generated. After outlining the basic principles an…
We provide a novel experimental method to quantitatively estimate the electron-phonon coupling and its momentum dependence from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra based on the detuning of the incident photon energy away from an absorption resonance. We apply it to the cuprate parent compound NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and find that the electronic coupling to the oxygen half-breathing phonon mode is strongest at the Brillouin zone boundary, where it amounts to $\sim 0.17$ eV, in agreement with previous studies. In principle, this method is applicable to any absorption resonance suitabl…
The nature of the fractional quantum Hall state with filling factor $ν=2/3$ and its edge modes continues to remain an open problem in low-dimensional condensed matter physics. Here, we suggest an experimental setting to probe the $ν=2/3$ edge by tunnel-coupling it to a $ν=1$ integer quantum Hall edge in another layer of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). In this double-layer geometry, the momentum of tunneling electrons may be boosted by an auxiliary magnetic field parallel to the two planes of 2DEGs. We evaluate the current as a function of bias voltage and the boosting magnetic field. It…
Unveiling the driving force for a phase transition is normally difficult when multiple degrees of freedom are strongly coupled. One example is the nematic phase transition in iron-based superconductors. Its mechanism remains controversial due to a complex intertwining among different degrees of freedom. In this paper, we report a method for measuring the nematic susceptibly of FeSe$_{0.9}$S$_{0.1}$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and an $in$-$situ$ strain-tuning device. The nematic susceptibility is characterized as an energy shift of band induced by a tunable uniaxial …

Recently, within the framework of the Composite Operator Method, it has been proposed a three-pole solution for the two-dimensional Hubbard model [Eur. Phys. J. B 87, 45 (2014)], which is still considered one of the best candidate model to microscopically describe high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors. The operatorial basis comprise the two Hubbard operators (complete fermionic local basis) and the electronic operator dressed by the nearest-neighbor spin fluctuations. The effectiveness of the approximate solution has been proved through a positive comparison with different numerical methods for…
Results of model calculations using exact diagonalization reveal the orbital character of states associated with different Raman loss peaks in Cu $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) from La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. The model includes electronic orbitals necessary to highlight non-local Zhang-Rice singlet, charge transfer and $d$-$d$ excitations, as well as states with apical oxygen 2$p_z$ character. The dispersion of these excitations is discussed with prospects for resonant final state wave-function mapping. A good agreement with experiments emphasizes the substantial multi-orbital cha…
The mixing of orbital and spin character in the wave functions of the $5d$ iridates has led to predictions of strong couplings among their lattice, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. As well as realizing a novel spin-orbit assisted Mott-insulating ground state, the perovskite iridate Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ has strong similarities with the cuprate La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, which on doping hosts a charge-density wave that appears intimately connected to high-temperature superconductivity. These phenomena can be sensitively probed through momentum-resolved measurements of the lattice dynamics, made …
High temperature superconductivity in cuprates arises from doping a parent Mott insulator by electrons or holes. A central issue is how the Mott gap evolves and the low-energy states emerge with doping. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a cuprate parent compound by sequential in situ electron doping. The chemical potential jumps to the bottom of the upper Hubbard band upon a slight electron doping, making it possible to directly visualize the charge transfer band and the full Mott gap region. With increasing doping, the Mott gap rapidly collapses due to t…
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed a dispersion anomaly at high binding energy near 0.3-0.5eV in various families of the high-temperature superconductors. For further studies of this anomaly we present a new two-dimensional fitting-scheme and apply it to high-statistics ARPES data of the strongly-overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6 cuprate superconductor. The procedure allows us to extract theself-energy in an extended energy and momentum range. It is found that the spectral function of Bi2Sr2CuO6 can be parameterized using a small set of tight-binding parameters and a w…

In photoelectron spectroscopy, the measured electron momentum range is intrinsically related to the excitation photon energy. Low photon energies $<10$ eV are commonly encountered in laser-based photoemission and lead to a momentum range that is smaller than the Brillouin zones of most materials. This can become a limiting factor when studying condensed matter with laser-based photoemission. An additional restriction is introduced by widely used hemispherical analyzers that record only electrons photoemitted in a solid angle set by the aperture size at the analyzer entrance. Here, we present a…
Motivated by the recent development of time-resolved resonant-inelastic x-ray scattering (TRRIXS) in photoexcited antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, we numerically investigate momentum-dependent transient spin dynamics in a half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pumping photon pulse, the intensity of a dynamical spin structure factor temporally oscillates with frequencies determined by the energy of two magnons in the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. We find an antiphase behavior in the oscillations between two orthogonal momentum directions, parallel and perpendic…
The angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) technique has been developed rapidly over the last decay, accompanied by the improvement of energy and momentum resolutions. This technique has been established as the most powerful tool to investigate the high Tc cuprate superconductors. We review recent ARPES data on the cuprates from a theoretical point of view, with emphasis on the systematic evolution of the spectral weight near the momentum (pi,0) from insulator to overdoped systems. The effects of charge stripes on the ARPES spectra are also reviewed. Some recent experimental and theoretical effo…
For a doped antiferromagnet with short-range spin stripe correlations and long-range charge stripe order we find that the manifestation of charge order changes abruptly as a function of momentum along the Fermi surface. The disorder averaged local density of states is almost perfectly homogeneous when integrated only over states which contribute to the ``nodal'' spectral weight whereas it displays long range charge stripe order when integrated only over states which contribute to the ``antinodal'' spectral weight. An effectively two dimensional nodal liquid can thus coexist with static charge …
