Within this work, we demonstrate in-situ easy-axis alignment of single-crystal magnetic particles inside a polymer matrix using fused filament fabrication. Two different magnetic materials are investigated: (i) Strontium hexaferrite inside a PA6 matrix, fill grade: 49 vol% and (ii) Samarium iron nitride inside a PA12 matrix, fill grade: 44 vol%. In the presence of the external alignment field, the strontium hexaferrite particles inside the PA6 matrix can be well aligned with a ratio of remanent magnetization to saturation magnetization of 0.7. No significant alignment for samarium iron nitride could be achieved. The results show the feasibility to fabricate magnets with arbitrary and locally defined easy axis using fused filament fabrication since the permanent magnets used for the alignment (or alternatively an electromagnet) can be mounted on a rotatable platform.
Topology optimization offers great opportunities to design permanent magnetic systems that have specific external field characteristics. Additive manufacturing of polymer bonded magnets with an end-user 3D printer can be used to manufacture permanent magnets with structures that have been difficult or impossible to manufacture previously. This work combines these two powerful methods to design and manufacture permanent magnetic system with specific properties. The topology optimization framework is simple, fast, and accurate. It can be also used for reverse engineering of permanent magnets in …

Magnetic isotropic NdFeB powder is processed by the following additive manufacturing methods: (i) stereolithography (SLA), (ii) fused filament fabrication (FFF), and (iii) selective laser sintering (SLS). For the first time, a stereolithography based method is used to 3D print hard magnetic materials. FFF and SLA use a polymer matrix material as binder, SLS sinters the powder directly. All methods use the same hard magnetic NdFeB powder material. Complex magnets with small feature sizes in a superior surface quality can be printed with SLA. The magnetic properties for the processed samples are…
Isotropic bonded magnets with a high loading fraction of 70 vol.% Nd-Fe-B are fabricated via an extrusion-based additive manufacturing, or 3D printing system that enables rapid production of large parts for the first time. The density of the printed magnet is 5.15 g/cm3. The room temperature magnetic properties are: intrinsic coercivity Hci = 8.9 kOe (708.2 kA/m), remanence Br = 5.8 kG (0.58 Tesla), and energy product (BH)max = 7.3 MGOe (58.1 kJ/m3). The as-printed magnets are then coated with two types of polymers, both of which improve the thermal stability at 127 °C as revealed by flux agin…
An alternate method of measuring anisotropy fields in thin film ferromagnets is demonstrated. The method relies on the magnetic susceptibility in a small a.c. magnetic field, measured \txtit{in situ} using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), and will be useful in situations where more specialized apparatus are not available, or constraints discourage the use of a large, static magnetic field. The method is demonstrated for Co/W(110) films, where it yields anisotropy fields in agreement with previous studies using more conventional torque magnetometry. The sensitivity of the method is demonst…
Magnetic anisotropy is a key parameter of magnetic materials as it decides the response in the presence of an external magnetic field. The artificial tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by manipulating surface and interface morphology is attracting widespread interest for its application in spintronic and magnetic memory devices. In this perspective, the primary focus of this thesis has been inducing and tailoring magnetic anisotropy in thin film-based systems via the engineering of structure and surface/interfacial morphology. For this purpose, instead of multistep, expensive lithographic techni…
We report on advanced in-situ magneto-transport measurements in a transmission electron microscope. The approach allows for concurrent magnetic imaging and high resolution structural and chemical characterization of the same sample. Proof-of-principle in-situ Hall measurements on presumably undemanding nickel thin films supported by micromagnetic simulations reveal that in samples with non-trivial structures and/or compositions, detailed knowledge of the latter is indispensable for a thorough understanding and reliable interpretation of the magneto-transport data. The proposed in-situ approach…
Intrinsic switching field distribution of arrays of Ni80Fe20 nanowires probed by $\mathit{in\, situ}$ magnetic force microscopy
The step-wise growth of epitaxial Fe on Cu(001)/Si(001), investigated by in-situ polarized neutron reflectometry is presented. A sputter deposition system was integrated into the neutron reflectometer AMOR at the Swiss neutron spallation source SINQ, which enables the analysis of the microstructure and magnetic moments during all deposition steps of the Fe layer. We report on the progressive evolution of the accessible parameters describing the microstructure and the magnetic properties of the Fe film, which reproduce known features and extend our knowledge on the behavior of ultrathin iron fi…
Despite the crucial role of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO based magnetic tunnel junction, the underlying mechanism is still being debated. Here, we report an anatomical study of oxygen and Mg effect on Pt/Co bilayers through repeated in-situ anomalous Hall effect measurements, controlled oxygen exposure and Mg deposition in an ultrahigh vacuum system. We found that chemisorbed oxygen not only quenches the effective magnetic moment of the Co surface layer, but also softens its magnetic anisotropy. However, a subsequent Mg dusting on the oxygen pre-exposed Pt/Co sur…
An ongoing process of miniaturization of spintronics and magnetic-films-based devices, as well as a growing necessity for basic material research place stringent requirements for sensitive and accurate magnetometric measurements of minute magnetic constituencies deposited on large magnetically responsive carriers. However, the most popular multipurpose commercial superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers are not object-selective probes, so the sought signal is usually buried in the magnetic response of the carrier, contaminated by signals from the sample support, system…
Evolution of magnetization behaviour of cobalt film on nano patterned silicon substrate, with film thickness, has been studied. In situ magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements during film deposition allowed us to study genuine thickness dependence of magnetization behaviour, all other parameters like surface topology, deposition conditions remaining invariant. The film exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with its magnitude decreasing with increasing film thickness. Analysis shows that anisotropy has contributions from both, i) exchange energy which is volume dependent and, ii) stray dipola…
We studied the structural and magnetic properties of \textit{in-situ} grown iron mononitride (FeN) thin films. Initial stages of film growth were trapped utilizing synchrotron based soft x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the N $K$-edge and nuclear resonant scattering (NRS). Films were grown using dc-magnetron sputtering, separately at the experimental stations of SXAS beamline (BL01, Indus 2) and NRS beamline (P01, Petra III). It was found that the initial stages of film growth differs from the bulk of it. Ultrathin FeN films, exhibited larger energy separation between the t$_…
Understanding the fundamental dynamics of topological vortex and antivortex naturally formed in micro/nanoscale ferromagnetic building blocks under external perturbations is crucial to magnetic vortex based information processing and spintronic devices. All previous studies have focused on magnetic vortex-core switching via external magnetic fields, spin-polarized currents, or spin waves, which have largely prohibited the investigation of novel spin configurations that could emerge from the ground states in ferromagnetic disks and their underlying dynamics. Here, we report in situ visualizatio…
Steadily growing interest in magnetic characterization of organic compounds for therapeutic purposes or of other irregularly shaped specimens calls for refinements of experimental methodology to satisfy experimental challenges. Encapsulation in capsules remains the method of choice, but its applicability in precise magnetometry is limited. This is particularly true for minute specimens in the single milligram range as they are outweighed by the capsules and are subject to large alignment errors. We present here a completely new experimental methodology that permits 30-fold in situ reduction of…
