We report the first detection in the ${\it J}_{\it K}$ = 1$_{0}$ - 0$_{0}$ rotational transition line of CH$_{3}$D towards three Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) from IRAM 30 m observations. Assuming a rotational temperature of 25 K, the CH$_{3}$D abundances (relative to H$_{2}$) are in the range of (2.3--14.5) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$. The CH$_{4}$ abundances derived from the CH$_{3}$D abundances and assuming the DCO$^+$/HCO$^+$ ratios are in the range of (0.05--4.8) $\times $10$^{-5}$. The gas-phase formation of CH$_{3}$D via CH$_2$D$^+$ is enhanced at high densities of 10$^{8}$--10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ and our observations are likely probing the innermost dense and warm regions in proto-BDs. Thermal and/or non-thermal desorption can return the CH$_{3}$D and CH$_{4}$ molecules formed at an early stage on grain surfaces to the gas-phase. The gas phase abundances are indicative of warm carbon-chain chemistry in proto-BDs where carbon-chain molecules are synthesized in a lukewarm ($\sim$20-30 K) region close to the central source.
Recent observations with the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI have shown that the CO2 bands at 4.2 micron in three brown dwarfs are much stronger than expected from the unified cloudy model (UCM) based on recent solar C & O abundances. This result has been a puzzle, but we now find that this is simply an abundance effect: We show that these strong CO2 bands can be explained with the UCMs based on the classical C & O abundances (log Ac and log Ao), which are about 0.2 dex larger compared to the recent values. Since three other brown dwarfs could be well interpreted with the recent solar C …
The detection of the CO_2 absorption band at 4.2 μm in brown dwarf spectra by AKARI has made it possible to discuss CO_2 molecular abundance in brown dwarf atmospheres. In our previous studies, we found an excess in the 4.2 μm CO_2 absorption band of three brown dwarf spectra, and suggested that these deviations were caused by high C and O elemental abundances in their atmospheres. To validate this hypothesis we construct a set of models of brown dwarf atmospheres with various elemental abundance patterns, and investigate the variations of the molecular composition, thermal structure and their…
We present results from a study of nitrogen chemistry in Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs). We have used the IRAM 30 m telescope to observe the CN (2-1), HCN (3-2), and HNC (3-2) lines in 7 proto-BDs. All proto-BDs show a large CN/HCN abundance ratio of >20, and a HNC/HCN abundance ratio close to or larger than unity. The enhanced CN/HCN ratios can be explained by high UV flux originating from an active accretion zone in the proto-BDs. The larger than unity HNC/HCN ratio for the proto-BDs is likely caused by a combination of low temperature and high density. Both CN and HNC show a flat …
Brown dwarf spectra contain a wealth of information about their molecular abundances, temperature structure, and gravity. We present a new data driven retrieval approach, previously used in planetary atmosphere studies, to extract the molecular abundances and temperature structure from brown dwarf spectra. The feasibility of the approach is first demonstrated on a synthetic brown dwarf spectrum. Given typical spectral resolutions, wavelength coverage, and noise properties precisions of tens of percent can be obtained for the molecular abundances and 10s-100s K on the temperature profile. The t…

Substellar objects have extremely long life-spans. The cosmological consequence for older objects are low abundances of heavy elements, which results in a wide distribution of objects over metallicity, hence over age. Within their cool atmosphere, dust clouds become a dominant feature, affecting the opacity and the remaining gas phase abundance of heavy elements. We investigate the influence of the stellar metallicity on the dust formation in substellar atmospheres and on the dust cloud structure and its feedback on the atmosphere. We utilize numerical simulations in which we solve a set of mo…
Li-depleted (enhanced) stars in the main-sequence (MS) and (or) the RGB, pose a puzzling mystery. Presently, there is still no clear answer to the mechanism(s) that enables such Li depletion (enhancement). One possible explanation comes from the, still controversial, observational evidence of Li underabundances in MS stars hosting planets, and of a positive correlation between the Li abundance and rotational velocity in some RGB stars, which suggests a stellar collision with a planet-like object as a possible solution. In this study we explore this scenario, performing for first time 3D-hydrod…
Deuterium fractionation can constrain the physical and chemical conditions at the early stage of brown dwarf formation. We present IRAM 30m observations over a wide frequency range of 213-279 GHz of singly and doubly deuterated species of formaldehyde (HDCO and D$_{2}$CO) towards Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs). Multiple low-excitation HDCO and D$_{2}$CO transition lines with upper energy level $\leq$ 40 K are detected. The D$_{2}$CO/HDCO, HDCO/H$_{2}$CO, D$_{2}$CO/H$_{2}$CO abundance ratios range between 0.01 and 2.5 for the proto-BDs, similar to the range seen in low-mass protostars…
It is well-known that stars with giant planets are on average more metal-rich than stars without giant planets, whereas stars with detected low-mass planets do not need to be metal-rich. With the aim of studying the weak boundary that separates giant planets and brown dwarfs (BDs) and their formation mechanism, we analyze the spectra of a sample of stars with already confirmed BD companions both by radial velocity and astrometry. We employ standard and automatic tools to perform an EW-based analysis and to derive chemical abundances from CORALIE spectra of stars with BD companions. We compare …
We present results from a deep sub-millimeter survey in the Serpens Main and Serpens/G3-G6 clusters, conducted with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA-2) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We have combined Herschel PACS far-infrared photometry, sub-millimeter continuum and molecular gas line observations, with the aim to conduct a detailed multi-wavelength characterization of `proto-brown dwarf' candidates in Serpens. We have performed continuum and line radiative transfer modeling, and have considered various classification schemes to understand the structure and the evol…
We present a near-infrared study of accretion and outflow activity in 6 Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) using VLT/SINFONI spectroscopy and spectro-imaging observations. The spectra show emission in several [FeII] and H$_{2}$ lines associated with jet/outflow activity, and in the accretion diagnostics of Pa$β$ and Br$γ$ lines. The peak velocities of the [FeII] lines ($>$100 km s$^{-1}$) are higher than the H$_{2}$ lines. The Class 0 proto-BDs show strong emission in the H$_{2}$ lines but the [FeII] lines are undetected, while the Class I objects show emission in both [FeII] and H$_{2}$…
Recent studies have shown that close-in brown dwarfs in the mass range 35-55 M$_{\rm Jup}$ are almost depleted as companions to stars, suggesting that objects with masses above and below this gap might have different formation mechanisms. We determine the fundamental stellar parameters, as well as individual abundances for a large sample of stars known to have a substellar companion in the brown dwarf regime. The sample is divided into stars hosting "massive" and "low-mass" brown dwarfs. Following previous works a threshold of 42.5 M$_{\rm Jup}$ was considered. Our results confirm that stars w…
We have conducted the first extensive observational survey of several deuterated species in 16 Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) and 4 Class Flat/Class II brown dwarfs. Observations were obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope in the DCO$^{+}$ (3-2), DCN (3-2), DNC (3-2), and N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ (3-2) lines. The DCO$^{+}$/H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$, DCN/H$^{13}$CN, and DNC/HN$^{13}$C ratios are comparatively higher and show a narrower range than the DCO$^{+}$/HCO$^{+}$, DCN/HCN, and DNC/HNC ratios, respectively. The mean D/H ratios for the proto-BDs derived from these molecules are in the range of $\sim$…
Context. The previously identified source SSTB213 J041757 is a proto brown dwarf candidate in Taurus, which has two possible components A and B. It was found that component B is probably a class 0/I proto brown dwarf associated with an extended envelope. Aims. Studying molecular outflows from young brown dwarfs provides important insight into brown dwarf formation mechanisms, particularly brown dwarfs at the earliest stages such as class 0, I. We therefore conducted a search for molecular outflows from SSTB213 J041757. Methods. We observed SSTB213 J041757 with the Submillimeter Array to search…
We present a study of the CO isotopologues and the high-density tracers H$_{2}$CO, HCO$^{+}$, and CS in Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs). We have used the IRAM 30m telescope to observe the $^{12}$CO (2-1), $^{13}$CO (2-1), C$^{18}$O (2-1), C$^{17}$O (2-1), H$_{2}$CO (3-2), HCO$^{+}$ (3-2), and CS (5-4) lines in 7 proto-BDs. The hydrogen column density for the proto-BDs derived from the CO gas emission is $\sim$2-15 times lower than that derived from the dust continuum emission, indicating CO depletion from the gas-phase. The mean H$_{2}$CO ortho-to-para ratio is $\sim$3 for the proto-B…

There is no universally acknowledged criterion to distinguish brown dwarfs from planets. Numerous studies have used or suggested a definition based on an object's mass, taking the ~13-Jupiter mass (M_J) limit for the ignition of deuterium. Here, we investigate various deuterium-burning masses for a range of models. We find that, while 13 M_J is generally a reasonable rule of thumb, the deuterium fusion mass depends on the helium abundance, the initial deuterium abundance, the metallicity of the model, and on what fraction of an object's initial deuterium abundance must combust in order for the…
A gas-grain time dependent chemical code, UCL\_CHEM, has been used to investigate the possibility of using chemical tracers to differentiate between the possible formation mechanisms of brown dwarfs. In this work, we model the formation of a pre-brown dwarf core through turbulent fragmentation by following the depth-dependent chemistry in a molecular cloud through the step change in density associated with an isothermal shock and the subsequent freefall collapse once a bound core is produced. Trends in the fractional abundance of molecules commonly observed in star forming cores are then explo…
We present the observational evidence of a pseudo-disc around the proto-brown dwarf Mayrit 1701117, the driving source of the large-scale HH~1165 jet. Our analysis is based on ALMA $^{12}$CO (2-1) line and 1.37 mm continuum observations at an angular resolution of $\sim$0.4$^{\prime\prime}$. The pseudo-disc is a bright feature in the CO position-velocity diagram (PVD), elongated in a direction perpendicular to the jet axis, with a total (gas+dust) mass of $\sim$0.02 M$_{\odot}$, size of 165-192 AU, and a velocity spread of $\pm$2 km s$^{-1}$. The large velocity gradient is a combination of inf…
On the basis of various data such as ALMA, JVLA, Chandra, {\it Herschel}, and {\it Spitzer}, we confirmed that two protostellar candidates in Oph-A are bona fide protostars or proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) in extremely early evolutionary stages. Both objects are barely visible across infrared (IR, i.e., near-IR to far-IR) bands. The physical nature of the cores is very similar to that expected in first hydrostatic cores (FHSCs), objects theoretically predicted in the evolutionary phase prior to stellar core formation with gas densities of $\sim$ 10$^{11-12}$ cm$^{-3}$. This suggests that the …
The formation mechanism of brown dwarfs (BDs) is one of the long-standing problems in star formation because the typical Jeans mass in molecular clouds is too large to form these substellar objects. To answer this question, it is crucial to study a BD at the embedded phase. IRAS 16253-2429 is classified as a very low luminosity object (VeLLO) with internal luminosity 0.1 Lsun. VeLLOs are believed to be very low-mass protostars or even proto-BDs. We observed the jet/outflow driven by IRAS 16253-2429 in CO (2-1), (6-5), and (7-6) using the IRAM 30 m and APEX telescopes and the SMA in order to st…
We are performing a series of observations with ground-based telescopes toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis complex in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. In the particular case of PGCC G192.32-11.88, we discovered an extremely young Class 0 protostellar object (G192N) and a proto-brown dwarf candidate (G192S). G192N and G192S are located in a gravitationally bound bright-rimmed clump. The velocity and temperature gradients seen in line emission of CO isotopologues indicate that PGCC G192.32-11.88 is externally heated and compressed. G…
In this letter a near-infrared integral field study of a proto-brown dwarf candidate is presented. A $\sim$ 0\farcs5 blue-shifted outflow is detected in both H$_{2}$ and [Fe II] lines at V$_{sys}$ = (-35~$\pm$ 2)~km~s$^{-1}$ and V$_{sys}$ = (-51~$\pm$ 5)~km~s$^{-1}$ respectively. In addition, slower ($\sim$ $\pm$~10~km~s$^{-1}$) H$_{2}$ emission is detected out to $<$ 5\farcs4, in the direction of both the blue and red-shifted outflow lobes but along a different position angle to the more compact faster emission. It is argued that the more compact emission is a jet and the extended H$_{2}$ emi…
This paper presents our observational attempts to precisely measure the central mass of a proto-brown dwarf candidate, L328-IRS, in order to investigate whether L328-IRS is in the substellar mass regime. Observations were made for the central region of L328-IRS with the dust continuum and CO isotopologue line emission at ALMA band 6, discovering the detailed outflow activities and a deconvolved disk structure of a size of $\sim$87 AU $\times$ 37 AU. We investigated the rotational velocities as a function of the disk radius, finding that its motions between 130 AU and 60 AU are partially fitted…
Brown dwarfs can serve as both clocks and chemical tracers of the evolutionary history of the Milky Way due to their continuous cooling and high sensitivity of spectra to composition. We focus on brown dwarfs in globular clusters that host some of the oldest coeval populations in the galaxy. Currently, no brown dwarfs in globular clusters have been confirmed, but they are expected to be uncovered with advanced observational facilities such as JWST. In this paper we present a new set of stellar models specifically designed to investigate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in $ω$ Centauri -- the la…
A benchmark brown dwarf (BD) is a BD whose properties (e.g., mass and chemical composition) are precisely and independently measured. Benchmark BDs are valuable in testing theoretical evolutionary tracks, spectral synthesis, and atmospheric retrievals for sub-stellar objects. Here, we report results of atmospheric retrieval on a synthetic spectrum and a benchmark BD -- HR 7672~B -- with \petit. First, we test the retrieval framework on a synthetic PHOENIX BT-Settl spectrum with a solar composition. We show that the retrieved C and O abundances are consistent with solar values, but the retrieve…
The formation mechanisms and chemical compositions of brown dwarfs likely span a diverse range. If they are formed predominantly in isolation by gravitational collapse like dwarf stars then their compositions might follow those of dwarf stars, spanning a relatively narrow range in metallicities (~ -0.4 to +0.4 dex) and predominantly oxygen-rich (C/O <~ 0.7). On the other hand, giant planets in the solar system are all super-solar in metallicity ([C/H] > 0.5~dex), which is thought to be a consequence of formation by core-accretion in a circumstellar disk. In this study we determine the atmosphe…
We report the discovery of a new Herbig-Haro jet, HH 1165, in SOAR narrow-band imaging of the vicinity of the sigma Orionis cluster. HH 1165 shows a spectacular extended and collimated spatial structure, with a projected length of 0.26 pc, a bent C-shaped morphology, multiple knots, and fragmented bow-shocks at the apparent ends of the flow. The Halpha image shows a bright halo with a clumpy distribution of material seen around the driving source, and curved reflection nebulosity tracing the outflow cavities. The driving source of HH 1165 is a Class I proto-brown dwarf, Mayrit 1701117 (M170111…

We present ALMA $^{12}$CO (2-1), $^{13}$CO (2-1), C$^{18}$O (2-1) molecular line observations of a very young proto-brown dwarf system, ISO-OPH 200. We have conducted physical+chemical modelling of the complex internal structure for this system using the core collapse simulations for brown dwarf formation. The model at an age of $\sim$6000 yr can provide a good fit to the observed kinematics, spectra, and reproduce the complex structures seen in the moment maps. Results from modelling indicate that $^{12}$CO emission is tracing an extended ($\sim$1000 au) molecular outflow and a bright shock k…
Cometary ices are formed during star and planet formation, and their molecular and elemental makeup can be related to the early solar system via the study of inter- and protostellar material. The first cometary abundance of the halogen element bromine (Br) was recently made available by the Rosetta mission. Its abundance in protostellar gas is thus far unconstrained, however. We set out to place the first observational constraints on the interstellar gas-phase abundance of bromine (Br). We further aim to compare the protostellar Br abundance with that measured by Rosetta in the ices of comet 6…
Measuring the properties of protoplanetary disks around brown dwarfs is central to understanding the formation of brown dwarfs and their planetary companions. We present modeling of CFHT Tau 4 and 2M0444, two brown dwarfs with protoplanetary disks in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. By combining modeling of the spectral energy distributions and ALMA images, we obtain disk radii and masses for these objects; these parameters can be used to constrain brown dwarf formation and planet formation, respectively. We find that the disk around CFHT Tau 4 has a mass of 0.42 M$_{Jup}$ and a radius of 80 au; we…
We review recent advancements in modeling the stellar to substellar transition. The revised molecular opacities, solar oxygen abundances and cloud models allow to reproduce the photometric and spectroscopic properties of this transition to a degree never achieved before, but problems remain in the important M-L transition characteristic of the effective temperature range of characterizable exoplanets. We discuss of the validity of these classical models. We also present new preliminary global Radiation HydroDynamical M dwarfs simulations.
Context. Chamaeleon II molecular cloud is an active star forming region that offers an excellent opportunity for studying the formation of brown dwarfs in the southern hemisphere. Aims. Our aims are to identify a population of pre- and proto- brown dwarfs (5 sigma mass limit threshold of ~0.015 Msun) and provide information on the formation mechanisms of substellar objects. Methods. We performed high sensitivity observations at 870 microns using the LABOCA bolometer at the APEX telescope towards an active star forming region in Chamaeleon II. The data are complemented with an extensive multiwa…
Brown dwarf formation and star formation efficiency are studied using a nested grid simulation that covers five orders of magnitude in spatial scale (10^4 - 0.1AU). Starting with a rotating magnetized compact cloud with a mass of 0.22 M_sun, we follow the cloud evolution until the end of main accretion phase. Outflow of about 5 km/s emerges about 100 yr before the protostar formation and does not disappear until the end of the calculation. The mass accretion rate declines from 10^-6 M_sun/yr to 10^-8 - 10^-12 M_sun/yr in a short time (about 10^4 yr) after the protostar formation. This is becau…
Brown dwarfs are commonly regarded as easily-observed templates for exoplanet studies, with comparable masses, physical sizes and atmospheric properties. There is indeed considerable overlap in the photospheric temperatures of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral classes L and T) and the hottest exoplanets. However, the properties and processes associated with brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres can differ significantly in detail; photospheric gas pressures, elemental abundance variations, processes associated with external driving sources, and evolutionary effects are all pertinent examples. …
Isolated brown dwarfs provide remarkable laboratories for understanding atmospheric physics in the low-irradiation regime, and can be observed more precisely than exoplanets. As such, they provide a glimpse into the future of high-SNR observations of exoplanets. In this work, we investigate several new considerations that are important for atmospheric retrievals of high-quality thermal emission spectra of sub-stellar objects. We pursue this using an adaptation of the HyDRA atmospheric retrieval code. We propose a parametric pressure-temperature (P-T) profile for brown dwarfs consisting of mult…
We conduct a pebble-driven planet population synthesis study to investigate the formation of planets around very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, in the (sub)stellar mass range between $0.01 \ M_{\odot}$ and $0.1 \ M_{\odot}$. Based on the extrapolation of numerical simulations of planetesimal formation by the streaming instability, we obtain the characteristic mass of the planetesimals and the initial masses of the protoplanets (largest bodies from the planetesimal size distributions), in either the early self-gravitating phase or the later non-self-gravitating phase of the protoplanetary dis…

Evidence of disequilibrium chemistry due to vertical mixing in the atmospheres of many T and Y-dwarfs has been inferred due to enhanced mixing ratios of CO and reduced NH$_3$. Atmospheric models of planets and brown dwarfs typically parameterize this vertical mixing phenomenon with the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient, $K_{\rm zz}$. While $K_{\rm zz}$ can perhaps be approximated in the convective regions in the atmosphere with mixing length theory, in radiative regions the strength of vertical mixing is uncertain by many orders of magnitude. With a new grid of self-consistent 1D model atmos…
We present the largest sample of brown dwarf (BD) protoplanetary disk spectral energy distributions modeled to date. We compile 49 objects with ALMA observations from four star-forming regions: $ρ$ Ophiuchus, Taurus, Lupus, and Upper Scorpius. Studying multiple regions with various ages enables us to probe disk evolution over time. Specifically, from our models we obtain values for dust grain sizes, dust settling, and disk mass; we compare how each of these parameters vary between the regions. We find that disk mass decreases with age. We also find evidence of disk evolution (i.e., grain growt…
From the luminosity, effective temperature, and age of the Hyades brown dwarf 2MASSJ04183483+2131275 (2M0418), sub-stellar evolutionary models predict a mass in the range 39-55 Jupiter masses (M_Jup) which is insufficient to produce any substantial lithium burning except for the very upper range >53 M_Jup. Our goal is to measure the abundance of lithium in this object, test the consistency between models and observations and refine constraints on the mass and age of the object. We used the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) with its low-dispersion optical spectrograph to obtain ten spectra …
We address disequilibrum abundances of some simple molecules in the atmospheres of solar composition brown dwarfs and self-luminous extrasolar giant planets using a kinetics-based 1D atmospheric chemistry model. Our approach is to use the full kinetics model to survey the parameter space with effective temperatures between 500 K and 1100 K. In all of these worlds equilibrium chemistry favors CH4 over CO in the parts of the atmosphere that can be seen from Earth, but in most disequilibrium favors CO. The small surface gravity of a planet strongly discriminates against CH4 when compared to an ot…
As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to ac- cretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving out- flows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the method is discussed and the results to date outlined.
The protostellar outflow mechanism operates for a significant fraction of the pre-main sequence phase of a solar mass star and is thought to have a key role in star and perhaps even planet formation. This energetic mechanism manifests itself in several different forms and on many scales. Thus outflow activity can be probed in numerous different regimes from radio to X-ray wavelengths. Recent discoveries have shown that it is not only solar mass stars that launch outflows during their formation but also the sub-stellar brown dwarfs. In this article what is currently known about jets from young …
We test the hypothesis that the observed first-peak (Sr, Y, Zr) and second-peak (Ba) s-process elemental abundances in low-metallicity Milky Way stars, and the abundances of the elements Mo and Ru, can be explained by a pervasive r-process contribution originating in neutrino-driven winds from highly-magnetic and rapidly rotating proto-neutron stars (proto-NSs). We construct chemical evolution models that incorporate recent calculations of proto-NS yields in addition to contributions from AGB stars, Type Ia supernovae, and two alternative sets of yields for massive star winds and core-collapse…

Within the next few years, GAIA and several instruments aiming at imag- ing extrasolar planets will see first light. In parallel, low mass planets are being searched around red dwarfs which offer more favourable conditions, both for radial velocity de- tection and transit studies, than solar-type stars. Authors of the model atmosphere code which has allowed the detection of water vapour in the atmosphere of Hot Jupiters re- view recent advancement in modelling the stellar to substellar transition. The revised solar oxygen abundances and cloud model allow for the first time to reproduce the pho…
There is growing evidence that brown dwarfs may be comparable to main-sequence stars in terms of their abundance. In this paper, we explore the prospects for the existence of life on Earth-like planets around brown dwarfs. We consider the following factors: (i) the length of time that planets can exist in the temporally shifting habitable zone, (ii) the minimum photon fluxes necessary for oxygenic photosynthesis, and (iii) the lower limits on the fluxes of ultraviolet radiation to drive prebiotic reactions ostensibly necessary for the origin of life. By taking these effects into consideration,…
