Automorphisms of Groups and a Higher Rank JSJ Decomposition I: RAAGs and a Higher Rank Makanin-Razborov Diagram

The JSJ decomposition encodes the automorphisms and the virtually cyclic splittings of a hyperbolic group. For general finitely presented groups, the JSJ decomposition encodes only their splittings. In this sequence of papers we study the automorphisms of a hierarchically hyperbolic group that satisfies some weak acylindricity conditions. To study these automorphisms we construct an object that can be viewed as a higher rank JSJ decomposition. In the first paper we demonstrate our construction in the case of a right angled Artin group. For studying automorphisms of a general HHG we construct what we view as a higher rank Makanin-Razborov diagram, which is the first step in the construction of the higher rank JSJ.

Makanin-Razborov Diagrams over Free Products

This paper is the first in a sequence on the first order theory of free products. In the first paper we generalize the analysis of systems of equations over free and (torsion-free) hyperbolic groups, and analyze system of equations over free products. To do that we introduce limit groups over the class of free products, and show that a finitely presented group has a canonical (finite) collection of maximal limit quotients. Makanin-Razborov diagrams for limit groups

We give a description of $Hom(G,L)$, where $L$ is a limit group (fully residually free group). We construct a finite diagram of groups, Makanin-Razborov diagram, that gives a convinient representation of all such homomorphisms.

Limit groups for relatively hyperbolic groups, II: Makanin-Razborov diagrams

Let Gamma be a torsion-free group which is hyperbolic relative to a collection of free abelian subgroups. We construct Makanin-Razborov diagrams for Gamma. We also prove that every system of equations over Gamma is equivalent to a finite subsystem, and a number of structural results about Gamma-limit groups.

Canonicality of Makanin-Razborov Diagrams - Counterexample

Sets of solutions to finite systems of equations in a free group, are equivalent to sets of homomorphisms from a fixed f.p. group into a free group. The latter can be encoded in a diagram, the construction of which is valid also for f.g. groups. The diagram is known to be canonical for a fixed f.g. group with a fixed generating set. In this paper we prove that the construction depends on the chosen generating set of the given f.g. group.

Notes on Sela's work: Limit groups and Makanin-Razborov diagrams

On Systems of Equations over Free Products of Groups

Using an analogue of Makanin-Razborov diagrams, we give a description of the solution set of systems of equations over an equationally Noetherian free product of groups $G$. Equivalently, we give a parametrisation of the set $Hom(H, G)$ of all homomorphisms from a finitely generated group $H$ to $G$. Furthermore, we show that every algebraic set over $G$ can be decomposed as a union of finitely many images of algebraic sets of NTQ systems. If the universal Horn theory of $G$ (the theory of quasi-identities) is decidable, then our constructions are effective.

JSJ decompositions of doubles of free groups

We classify all possible JSJ decompositions of doubles of free groups of rank two and we then compute the Makanin-Razborov diagram of a particular double of a free group and deduce that in general limit groups are not freely subgroup separable.
