The light trajectory in the gravitational field of one body at rest with monopole and quadrupole structure is determined in the second post-Newtonian (2PN) approximation. The terms in the geodesic equation for light rays are separated into time-independent tensorial coefficients and four kind of time-dependent scalar functions. Accordingly, the first and second integration of geodesic equation can be reduced in each case to only four kind of scalar master integrals. These integrals can be solved in closed form by recurrence relations. The 2PN terms of monopole and quadrupole contribute less than $1$ nano-arcsecond to the total light deflection. There are, however, enhanced terms in the 2PN light deflection, both in case of monopole and quadrupole. These enhanced 2PN terms are caused by the use of an impact vector which is indispensable for modeling of real astrometric measurements. In case of grazing light rays at Jupiter and Saturn, the enhanced 2PN terms, caused by the quadrupole structure of the body, amount up to 0.95 micro-arcseconds and 0.29 micro-arcseconds, respectively. Thus, the 2PN quadrupole terms are relevant for high-precision astrometry on the sub-micro-arcsecond scale of accuracy.
An exact solution of Einstein's equations representing the static gravitational field of a quasi-spherical source endowed with both mass and mass quadrupole moment is considered. It belongs to the Weyl class of solutions and reduces to the Schwarzschild solution when the quadrupole moment vanishes. The geometric properties of timelike circular orbits (including geodesics) in this spacetime are investigated. Moreover, a comparison between geodesic motion in the spacetime of a quasi-spherical source and non-geodesic motion of an extended body also endowed with both mass and mass quadrupole momen…
The motion of a particle that suffers the influence of simple inner (outer) periodic perturbations when it evolves around a center of attraction modeled by an inverse square law plus a quadrupole-like term is studied. The equations of motion are used to reduce the Melnikov method to the study of simple graphics.
We investigate the general geometric properties of the surface of infinite red-shift corresponding to the event horizon of the static and axisymmetric solution of the Einstein vacuum equations that only possesses mass $M$ and quadrupole moment $Q$. The deformation of the Schwarzschild surface $r=2M$ produced by the quadrupole moment is shown, and the range of values of this multipole moment is specified, which preserves a regular, closed, continuous and differentiable surface. Some thermodynamic consequences and speculations ensuing from our results are discussed.
The radiation reaction in compact spinning binaries on eccentric orbits due to the quadrupole-monopole interaction is studied. This contribution is of second post-Newtonian order. As result of the precession of spins the magnitude $L$ of the orbital angular momentum is not conserved. Therefore a proper characterization of the perturbed radial motion is provided by the energy $E$ and angular average $\bar{L}$. As powerful computing tools, the generalized true and eccentric anomaly parametrizations are introduced. Then the secular losses in energy and magnitude of orbital angular momentum togeth…
We study gravitational lensing by quadrupole potentials within the linearized gravity approximation and the integration over the unperturbed photon trajectory. It is well known that the quadrupole potential contribution to the deviation angle is much smaller than that of the monopole one. We show, however, that quadrupole potentials can change the photon polarization vector, but there is no contribution from the monopole term to the first order. The effect is maximal when the axis of the quadrupole is tangential to the photon trajectory and it is proportional to the frequency(rate) of the quad…
A rotating star's oblateness creates a deformation in the gravitational field outside the star, which is measured by the quadrupole-moment tensor. We consider the effect of the quadrupole moment on the orbital motion and rate of inspiral of a compact binary system, composed of neutron stars and/or black holes. We find that in the case of circular orbits, the quadrupole-monopole interaction affects the relation between orbital radius and angular velocity, and also the rate of inspiral, by a quantity of order (v/c)^4, where v is the orbital velocity and c the speed of light.
The tails of gravitational waves are caused by scattering of linear waves onto the space-time curvature generated by the total mass-energy of the source. Quite naturally, the tails of tails are caused by curvature scattering of the tails of waves themselves. The tails of tails are associated with the cubic non-linear interaction between two mass monopole moments and, dominantly, the mass quadrupole of the source. In this paper we determine the radiation field at large distances from the source for this particular monopole-monopole-quadrupole interaction. We find that the tails of tails appear …
We analyze in detail the spin precession equations in binary black hole systems, when the tidal torque on a Kerr black hole due to quadrupole-monopole coupling is taken into account. We show that completing the precession equations with this term reveals the existence of a conserved quantity at 2PN order when averaging over orbital motion. This quantity allows one to solve the (orbit-averaged) precession equations exactly in the case of equal masses and arbitrary spins, neglecting radiation reaction. For unequal masses, an exact solution does not exist in closed form, but we are still able to …
The time delay of a light signal in the quadrupole field of a body at rest is determined in the second post-Newtonian (2PN) approximation in harmonic coordinates. For grazing light rays at Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn the 2PN quadrupole effect in time delay amounts up to 0.004, 0.14, and 0.04 pico-second, respectively. These values are compared with the time delay in the first post-Newtonian (1PN and 1.5PN) approximation, where it turns out that only the first eight mass-multipoles and the spin-dipole of these massive bodies are required for a given goal accuracy of 0.001 pico-second in time-delay…
Future observations of continuous gravitational waves from single neutron stars, apart from their monumental astrophysical significance, could also shed light on fundamental physics and exotic particle states. One such avenue is based on the fact that magnetic fields cause deformations of a neutron star, which results in a magnetic-field-induced quadrupole ellipticity. If the magnetic and rotation axes are different, this quadrupole ellipticity may generate continuous gravitational waves which may last decades, and may be observable in current or future detectors. Light, milli-magnetic monopol…
Post-Newtonian secular dynamics of hierarchical triples II. Canonical derivation of the 1PN $\times$ quadrupole cross terms and of the quadrupole-squared term
Spinning neutron stars acquire a quadrupole moment due to their own rotation. This quadratic-in-spin, self-spin effect depends on the equation of state (EOS) and affects the orbital motion and rate of inspiral of neutron star binaries. We incorporate the EOS-dependent self-spin (or monopole-quadrupole) terms in the spin-aligned effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model TEOBResumS at next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) order, together with other (bilinear, cubic and quartic) nonlinear-in-spin effects (at leading order, LO). The structure of the Hamiltonian of TEOBResumS is such that it already incorpo…
The pure $R^2$ gravity is equivalent to Einstein gravity with cosmological constant and a massless scalar field and it further possesses the so-called restricted Weyl symmetry which is a symmetry larger than scale symmetry. To incorporate matter, we consider a restricted Weyl invariant action composed of pure $R^2$ gravity, SU(2) Yang-Mills fields and a non-minimally coupled massless Higgs field (a triplet of scalars). When the restricted Weyl symmetry is spontaneously broken, it is equivalent to an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) action with a cosmological constant and a massive Higgs non-mi…
We investigate spin- and velocity-dependent contributions to the gravitational inter-particle potential. The methodology adopted here is based on the expansion of the effective action in terms of form factors encoding quantum corrections. Restricting ourselves to corrections up to the level of the graviton propagator, we compute, in terms of general form factors, the non-relativistic gravitational potential associated with the scattering of spin-0 and -1/2 particles. We discuss comparative aspects concerning different types of scattered particles and we also establish some comparisons with the…
A theory with a global $O(3)$ symmetry broken at a scale $η$ admits topological configurations: global monopoles realized by Goldstone fields winding around the core of false vacuum. One may expect them to behave as heavy, big composite objects, difficult to make and therefore mostly harmless. However, after gravity is turned on, as long as Equivalence Principle holds, one finds that global monopoles have a negative mass, $M \sim - η/\sqrtλ$, where $λ$ is the field theory coupling. This could catalyze an instability in the space of a global monopole, by the production of additional global mono…
