We employ the method used by the GW-Universe Toolbox to generate a synthetic catalogue of detection of stellar mass binary black hole (BBH) mergers. We study advanced LIGO (aLIGO) and Einstein Telescope (ET) as two representatives for the 2nd and 3rd generation GW observatories, and study how GW observations of BBHs can be used to constrain the merger rate as function of redshift and masses. We also simulate the observations from a detector that is half as sensitive as the ET at design which represents an early phase of ET. Two methods are used to obtain the constraints on the source population properties from the catalogues: 1. parametric differential merger rate model and applies a Bayesian inference on the parameters; and 2. non-parametric and uses weighted Kernel density estimators. The results show the overwhelming advantages of the 3rd generation detector over the 2nd generation for the study of BBH population properties, especially at a redshifts higher than ~2, where the merger rate is believed to peak. With the simulated aLIGO catalogue, the parametric Bayesian method can still give some constraints on the merger rate density and mass function beyond its detecting horizon, while the non-parametric method lose the constraining ability completely there. We also find that, despite the numbers of detection of the half-ET can be easily compatible with full ET after a longer observation duration, the catalogue from the full ET can still give much better constraints on the population properties, due to its smaller uncertainties on the physical parameters of the GW events.
Gravitational-wave measurements of the tidal deformability in neutron-star binary coalescences can be used to infer the still unknown equation of state (EoS) of dense matter above the nuclear saturation density. By employing a Bayesian-ranking test we quantify the ability of current and future gravitational-wave observations to discriminate among families of nuclear-physics based EoS which differ in particle content and ab-initio microscopic calculations. While the constraining power of GW170817 is limited, we show that even twenty coalescences detected by LIGO-Virgo at design sensitivity are …
A significant number of stellar binary black hole (sBBH) mergers may be lensed and detected by the third generation gravitational wave (GW) detectors. Their lensed host galaxies may be detectable, which thus helps to accurately localize these sources and provide a new approach to study the origin of sBBHs. In this paper, we investigate the detectability of the lensed host galaxies for the lensed sBBH mergers. We find that the detection fraction of the host galaxies to the lensed GW events can be significantly different for a survey with a given limiting magnitude if sBBHs are produced by diffe…

A spinning neutron star (NS) that is asymmetric with respect to its spin axis can emit continuous gravitational wave (GW) signals. The spin frequencies and their distribution of radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and accreting MSPs provide some evidences of GW radiation, and MSPs are ideal probes detecting high frequency GW signals. It is generally thought that MSPs originate from the recycled process, in which the NS accretes the material and angular momentum from the donor star. The accreted matter would be confined at the polar cap zone by an equatorial belt of compressed magnetic field fixed…
The Einstein Telescope (ET) is the future third generation gravitational wave detector consisting of three independent interferometers arranged in a triangular configuration, with the sensitivity large enough to be able to detect stellar mass black holes even beyond the redshift of 10. In this paper, we analyze the capabilities of ET as a standalone instrument and not part of a network. We show that the analysis of detection of binary coalescences in the three individual interferometers of the ET allow us to weakly constrain the sky location of the source. We present the analysis that leads to…
We carried out spectro-temporal analysis of the archived data from multiple outbursts spanning over the last two decades from the black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4. In this paper, the mass of the compact object in the X-ray binary system GX 339-4 is constrained based on three indirect methods. The first method uses broadband spectral modelling with a two component flow structure of the accretion around the black hole. The broadband data are obtained from {\it RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer)} in the range 3.0 to 150.0 keV and from {\it Swift} and {\it NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope A…
Quasars whose broad emission lines show temporal, bulk radial velocity (RV) shifts have been proposed as candidate sub-parsec (sub-pc), binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs). We identified a sample of 16 BSBH candidates based on two-epoch spectroscopy among 52 quasars with significant RV shifts over a few rest-frame years. The candidates showed consistent velocity shifts independently measured from two broad lines (H$β$ and H$α$ or Mg${\rm \,II}$) without significant changes in the broad-line profiles. Here in the third paper of the series, we present further third- and fourth-epoch spectros…
The Einstein Telescope (ET), a future third-generation gravitational wave detector will have detection sensitivity for gravitational wave signals down to 1 Hz. This improved low-frequency sensitivity of the ET will allow the observation of low mass binaries for a longer period of time in the detection band before their merger. Because of an improved sensitivity as compared to current and advanced 2G detectors, the detection rate will also be greatly improved. Given the high detection rate of merging compact binaries with the ET, it will be a useful instrument to conduct population studies. In …
The jet opening angle and inclination of GW170817 -- the first detected binary neutron star merger -- were vital to understand its energetics, relation to short gamma-ray bursts, and refinement of the standard siren-based determination of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. These basic quantities were determined through a combination of the radio lightcurve and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of proper motion. In this paper we discuss and quantify the prospects for the use of radio VLBI observations and observations of scintillation-induced variability to measure the source size …
We show that the recently discovered binary 2M05215658+4359220 (2M0521), comprised of a giant star (GS) orbiting a suspected black hole (BH) in a ~80 day orbit, may be instrumental in shedding light on uncertain BH-formation physics and can be a test case for studying wind accretion models. Using binary population synthesis with a realistic prescription for the star formation history and metallicity evolution of the Milky Way, we analyze the evolution of binaries containing compact objects (COs) in orbit around GSs with properties similar to 2M0521. We find ~100-1000 CO-GS binaries in the Milk…

We present a search for gravitational waves from the coalescence of sub-solar mass black hole binaries using data from the first half of Advanced LIGO and Virgo's third observing run. The observation of a sub-solar mass black hole merger may be an indication of primordial origin; primordial black holes may contribute to the dark matter distribution. We search for black hole mergers where the primary mass is $0.1-7 M_{\odot}$ and the secondary mass is $0.1-1 M_{\odot}$. A variety of models predict the production and coalescence of binaries containing primordial black holes; some involve dynamic…
Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) span the approximate mass range $100$--$10^5\,M_\odot$, between black holes (BHs) formed by stellar collapse and the supermassive BHs at the centers of galaxies. Mergers of IMBH binaries are the most energetic gravitational-wave sources accessible by the terrestrial detector network. Searches of the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo did not yield any significant IMBH binary signals. In the third observing run (O3), the increased network sensitivity enabled the detection of GW190521, a signal consistent with a binary merger of mas…

The LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors carried out the first half of their third observing run from April through October 2019. During this period, they detected 39 new signals from the coalescence of black holes or neutron stars, more than quadrupling the total number of detected events. These detections included some unprecedented sources, like a pair of black holes with unequal masses (GW190412), a massive pair of neutron stars (GW190425), a black hole potentially in the supernova pair-instability mass gap (GW190521), and either the lightest black hole or the heaviest neutron star …
In an earlier work [S. Kastha et al., PRD {\bf 98}, 124033 (2018)], we developed the {\it parametrized multipolar gravitational wave phasing formula} to test general relativity, for the non-spinning compact binaries in quasi-circular orbit. In this paper, we extend the method and include the important effect of spins in the inspiral dynamics. Furthermore, we consider parametric scaling of PN coefficients of the conserved energy for the compact binary, resulting in the parametrized phasing formula for non-precessing spinning compact binaries in quasi-circular orbit. We also compute the projecte…
