In this paper we explore the possibility to find exact solutions for Teleparallel Gravity (TG) of the type of spherically symmetric Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust models. We apply to the LTB metric the formalism of Teleparallel Gravity in its extension to $f(T,B)$ models, which can be seen it as the analagous from the Schwarzschild solution in General Relativity. An exact LTB solution is obtained which is compatible with a specific $f(T,B)$ model whose observational constraints are cosmological viable in a standard spatially flat Robertson-Walker geometry.
We perform numerical simulations of large scale structure evolution in an inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of the Universe. We follow the gravitational collapse of a large underdense region (a void) in an otherwise flat matter-dominated Einstein-deSitter model. We observe how the (background) density contrast at the centre of the void grows to be of order one, and show that the density and velocity profiles follow the exact non-linear LTB solution to the full Einstein equations for all but the most extreme voids. This result seems to contradict previous claims that fully relativ…
This work deals with a detailed study of the dynamics of the apparent, event and particle horizons in the background of the inhomogeneous LTB spacetime. The comparative study among these horizons shows a distinct character for apparent horizon compared to the other horizons. The apparent horizon will be a trapping horizon if its acceleration is positive. The Kodama vector is also defined and its causal character is found to be similar to that in the FRW model.
We examine in this paper the possibility of finding exact solutions for Teleparallel Gravity (TG) of the type of spherically symmetric Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust models. We apply to the LTB metric, as obtained from the Schwarzschild solution in General Relativity, the formalism of Teleparallel Gravity in its extension to $f(T,B)$ models. An exact LTB solution is obtained that is compatible with a specific $f(T,B)$ model that seems to be appropriate to fit observations when applied to standard spatially flat Robertson-Walker geometry.
We obtain a scaling relation for spherically symmetric k-essence scalar fields $ϕ(r,t)$ for an inhomogeneous cosmology with the Lemaitre-Tolman- Bondi (LTB) metric. We show that this scaling relation reduces to the known relation for a homogeneous cosmology when the LTB metric reduces to the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric under certain identifications of the metric functions. A k-essence lagrangian is set up and the Euler-Lagrangian equations solved assuming $ϕ(r,t)=ϕ_{1}(r) + ϕ_{2}(t)$. The solutions enable the LBT metric functions to be related to the fields. The LTB inhom…
The present work deals with three alternative generalized Bekenstein-Hawking formulation of thermodynamical parameters namely entropy and temperature for the universal thermodynamical system bounded by a horizon in the frame work of inhomogeneous perfect fluid Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of the Universe. For the first choice, the first law of thermodynamics holds only for the trivial de Sitter case of the LTB model while we need restriction on the evolution of the horizon radius for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, for the other two choices, the firs…
In this paper we introduce a LTB-Bianchi I (plane symmetric) model of Universe. We study and solve Einstein field equations. We investigate the effects of such model of Universe in particular these results are important in understanding the effect of the combined presence of an inhomogeneous and anisotropic Universe. The observational magnitude-redshift data deviated from UNION 2 catalog has been analyzed in the framework of this LTB-anisotropic Universe and the fit has been achieved without the inclusion of any dark energy.
As an alternative to dark energy that explains the observed acceleration of the universe, it has been suggested that we may be at the center of an inhomogeneous isotropic universe described by a Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) solution of Einstein's field equations. To test this possibility, it is necessary to solve the null geodesics. In this paper we first give a detailed derivation of a fully analytical set of differential equations for the radial null geodesics as functions of the redshift in LTB models. As an application we use these equaions to show that a positive averaged acceleration $a_D…
Our Universe may feature large-scale inhomogeneities and anisotropies which cannot be explained by the standard model of cosmology, that is, the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW metric, on which the $Λ$CDM model is built, may not describe accurately observations. Currently, there is not a satisfactory understanding of the evolution of the large-scale structure on an inhomogeneous background. We start the cosmology beyond homogeneity and isotropy (BEHOMO) project and study the inhomogeneous $Λ$LTB model with the methods of numerical cosmology. Understanding the evolution of the large-scale struct…
We provide a formula for estimating the redshift and its secular change (redshift drift) in Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spherically symmetric universes. We compute the scaling of the redshift drift for LTB models that predict Hubble diagrams indistinguishable from those of the standard cosmological model, the flat $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) model. We show that the redshift drift for these degenerate LTB models is typically different from that predicted in the $Λ$CDM scenario. We also highlight and discuss some unconventional redshift-drift signals that arise in LTB universes and give them d…
We address some recent erroneous claim that $H_0$ observations are difficult to accommodate with LTB cosmological models, showing how to construct solutions in agreement with an arbitrary value of $H_0$ by re-writing the exact solution in terms of dimensionless parameters and functions. This approach can be applied to fully exploit LTB solutions in designing models alternative to dark energy without making any restrictive or implicit assumption about the inhomogeneity profile. The same solution can also be used to study structure formation in the regime in which perturbation theory is not enou…
In this work, we try to obtain a stable Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) static universe, which is spherically symmetric and radially inhomogeneous. However, this is not an easy task, and fails in general relativity (GR) and various modified gravity theories, because the corresponding LTB static universes must reduce to the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) static universes. We find a way out in a new type of modified gravity theory, in which the conservation of energy and momentum is broken. In this work, we have proposed a novel modification to the original Rastall gravity. In some sense, our Rast…
We derive a direct general map from the luminosity distance D(z) to the inhomogeneous matter distribution M(r) in the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) cosmology and compute several examples. One of our examples explicitly demonstrates that it is possible to tune the LTB cosmological solution to approximately reproduce the luminosity distance curve of a flat FRW universe with a cosmological constant. We also discuss how smooth matter distributions can evolve into naked singularities due to shell crossing when the inhomogeneous ``spatial curvature'' E(r) is a function which changes sign.
The Lemaítre-Toman-Bondi (LTB) models have reported to suffer from incompatibility with cosmological observations and fine-tuning of the observer's location. Further analysis of these issues indicates that they could be resolved by models that are compatible with the supernova Ia data, but less inhomogeneous than those that have been presented in the literature so far. We study if such models exist by employing the degrees of freedom of the LTB models in a novel manner. We discovered two scenarios which may meet the expectations, but extensive numerical and analytical investigation showed them…
We derive a class of non-static inhomogeneous dust solutions in f(R) gravity described by the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) metric. The field equations are fully integrated for all parameter subcases and compared with analogous subcases of LTB dust solutions of GR. Since the solutions do not admit regular symmetry centres, we have two possibilities: (i) a spherical dust cloud with angle deficit acting as the source of a vacuum Schwarzschild-like solution associated with a global monopole, or (ii) fully regular dust wormholes without angle deficit, whose rest frames are homeomorphic to the Schwar…
Marginal LTB models with corrections from loop quantum gravity have recently been studied with an emphasis on potential singularity resolution. This paper corroborates and extends the analysis in two regards: (i) the whole class of LTB models, including non-marginal ones, is considered, and (ii) an alternative procedure to derive anomaly-free models is presented which first implements anomaly-freedom in spherical symmetry and then the LTB conditions rather than the other way around. While the two methods give slightly different equations of motion, not altogether surprisingly given the ubiquit…
This paper aims to analyze the generalization of Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spacetime for dissipative dust under the influence of Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. We explore the modified field equations, kinematical variables, and mass function in this scenario. We construct Bianchi identities using conservation and differential equations for shear, expansion, and curvature scalar in the background of Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. We calculated the scalar functions coming from the orthogonal decomposition of the Riemann tensor in this framework. These scalar functions known as structure scalars have bee…
We examine a large class of inhomogeneous spherically symmetric spacetimes that generalize the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust solutions to nonzero pressure ("LTB spacetimes"). Local covariant LTB objects can be expressed as perturbations of covariant quasi-local (QL) scalars that satisfy evolution equations of equivalent Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) scalars. Thus, the dynamics of these spacetimes can be rigorously described as non-linear, gauge invariant and covariant perturbations on a formal FLRW background given by the QL scalars. Since LTB spacetimes are compatible with a wide var…
As is well known, one can explain the current cosmic acceleration by considering an inhomogeneous and/or anisotropic universe (which violates the cosmological principle), without invoking dark energy or modified gravity. The well-known one of this kind of models is the so-called Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) void model, in which the universe is spherically symmetric and radially inhomogeneous, and we are living in a locally underdense void centered nearby our location. In the present work, we test various LTB void models with some old high redshift objects (OHROs). Obviously, the universe cann…
Exact luminosity distance and apparent magnitude formulas are applied to Union2 557 supernovae sample in order to constrain possible position of an observer outside of the center of symmetry in spherically symmetric inhomogeneous pressure Stephani universes which are complementary to inhomogeneous density Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) void models. Two specific models are investigated. The first which allows a barotropic equation of state at the center of symmetry with no scale factor function being specified (model IIA), and the second which has no barotropic equation of state at the center, but…
We consider on-center and off-center observers in an inhomogeneous, spherically symmetric, isocurvature (flat) concentration of dark energy with typical size of a few Gpc. Such a concentration could be produced e.g. by a recently formed global monopole with core size that approaches the Hubble scale. In this case we would have what may be called `topological quintessence' in analogy with the well-known topological inflation. We show that the minimum comoving radius r_{0min} of such a dark energy inhomogeneity that is consistent with the Union2 Type Ia supernovae (SnIa) data at the 3σlevel is r…
It is known that a smooth LTB model cannot have a positive apparent central acceleration. Using a local Taylor expansion method we study the low-redshift conditions to obtain an apparent negative deceleration parameter $q^{app}(z)$ derived from the luminosity distance $D_L(z)$ for a central observer in a LTB space, confirming that central smoothness implies a positive central deceleration. Since observational data is only available at redshift greater than zero we find the critical values of the parameters defining a centrally smooth LTB model which give a positive apparent acceleration at $z>…
We consider cosmological backreaction effects in Buchert's averaging formalism on the basis of an explicit solution of the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dynamics which is linear in the LTB curvature parameter and has an inhomogeneous bang time. The volume Hubble rate is found in terms of the volume scale factor which represents a derivation of the simplest phenomenological solution of Buchert's equations in which the fractional densities corresponding to average curvature and kinematic backreaction are explicitly determined by the parameters of the underlying LTB solution at the boundary of the …
The Maxwell electromagnetic theory embedded in an inhomogeneous Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spacetime background was described a few years back in the literature. However, terms concerning the mass or high-derivatives were no explored. In this work we studied the inhomogeneous spacetime effects on high-derivatives and massive electromagnetic models. We used the LTB metric and calculated the physical quantities of interest, namely the scale factor, density of the electromagnetic field and Hubble constant, for the Proca and higher-derivative Podolsky models. We found a new singularity in both …
The luminosity distance can be used to determine the properties of large scale structure around the observer. To this purpose we develop a new inversion method to map luminosity distance to a LTB metric based on the use of the exact analytical solution for Einstein equations. The main advantages of this approach are an improved numerical accuracy and stability, an exact analytical setting of the initial conditions for the differential equations which need to be solved and the validity for any sign of the functions determining the LTB geometry. Given the fully analytical form of the differentia…
We construct the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust universe whose distance-redshift relation is equivalent to that in the concordance $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmological model. In our model, the density distribution and velocity field are not homogeneous, whereas the big-bang time is uniform, which implies that the universe is homogeneous at its beginning. We also study the effects of local clumpiness in the density distribution as well as the effects of large-scale inhomogeneities on the distance-redshift relation, and show that these effects may reduce the amplitude of large-scale inho…
Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) solutions have traditionally been confined to systems with no pressure in which the gravity is due to massive dust, but the solutions are little changed in form if, as in cosmology, the pressure is uniform in space at each comoving time. This allows the equations of cosmology to be deduced in a manner that more closely resembles classical mechanics. It also gives some inhomogeneous solutions with growing condensations and black holes. We give criteria by which the sizes of different closed models of the universe can be compared and discuss conditions for self-closur…
We study an exact swiss-cheese model of the Universe, where inhomogeneous LTB patches are embedded in a flat FLRW background, in order to see how observations of distant sources are affected. We find negligible integrated effect, suppressed by (L/R_{H})^3 (where L is the size of one patch, and R_{H} is the Hubble radius), both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. We disentangle this effect from the Doppler term (which is much larger and has been used recently \cite{BMN} to try to fit the SN curve without dark energy) by making contact with cosmological perturbation theory.
We study some consequences of the loop quantization of the outermost dust shell in the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi spacetime with a homogeneous dust density using different quantization strategies motivated by loop quantum gravity. Prior work has dealt with loop quantizing this model by employing holonomies and the triads, following the procedure in standard loop quantum cosmology. In this work we compare this quantization with the one in which holonomies and gauge-covariant fluxes are used. While both of the quantization schemes resolve the central singularity, they lead to different mass gaps at w…
We investigate the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of an incoherent dust cloud by considering a LTB type space-time in third order Lovelock Gravity without cosmological constant, and give three families of LTB-like solutions which separately corresponding to hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic. Notice that the contribution of high order curvature corrections have a profound influence on the nature of the singularity, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the presence of high order Lovelock terms leads…
There has been much debate over whether or not one could explain the observed acceleration of the Universe with inhomogeneous cosmological models, such as the spherically-symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) models. It has been claimed that the central observer in these models can observe a local acceleration, which would contradict general theorems. We resolve the contradiction by noting that many of the models that have been explored contain a weak singularity at the location of the observer which makes them unphysical. In the absence of this singularity, we show that LTB models must have a…
We derive a redshift drift formula for the spherically symmetric inhomogeneous pressure Stephani universes which are complementary to the spherically symmetric inhomogeneous density Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi models. We show that there is a clear difference between redshift drift predictions for these two models as well as between the Stephani models and the standard $Λ$CDM Friedmann models. The Stephani models have positive drift values at small redshift and behave qualitatively (but not quantitatively) as the $Λ$CDM models at large redshift, while the drift for LTB models is always negative. This…
It is discussed a truncation of the kinematical Hilbert space of Loop Quantum Gravity, which describes the dynamical system associated with an inhomogeneous cosmological model.
We explore the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric dust cloud in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity without a cosmological constant, and obtain three families of LTB-like solutions. It is shown that the Gauss-Bonnet term has a profound influence on the nature of singularities, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the formation of a naked, massive and uncentral singularity, allowed in 5-dimensional space-time, is forbidden if $D\geq6$. Moreover, such singularity is gravitational strong and a serious …
A new family of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous solutions of Brans-Dicke gravity is generated using the Fonarev solution of general relativity as a seed and a map from the Einstein to the Jordan conformal frame. The Brans-Dicke scalar field self-interacts with a power-law or inverse power-law potential in the Jordan frame. This 4-parameter family of geometries, which is dynamical and asymptotically Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker, contains as special cases two previously known classes of solutions and solves also the field equations of $f(R)=R^n$ gravity
This paper is about the $n+2$-dimensional gravitational contraction of inhomogeneous fluid without heat flux in the framework of $f(R)$ metric theory of gravity. Matching conditions for two regions of a star has been derived by using the Darmois junction conditions. For the analytic solution of equations of motion in modified $f(R)$ theory of gravity, we have taken scalar curvature as constant. Hence final result of gravitational collapse in this frame work is the existence of black hole and cosmological horizons, both of these form earlier than singularity. It has been shown that constant cur…
We consider a Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi type space-time in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms, and present exact solution in closed form. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms alpha > 0 completely changes the causal structure of the singularities from the analogous general relativistic case. The gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust in the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet extended Einstein equations leads to formation of a massive, but weak, timelike singularity which is forbidden in general relativity…
General relativity (GR) characterizes gravity as a geometric properly exhibited as curvature on spacetime. Teleprallelism describes gravity through torsional properties, and can reproduce GR at the level of equations. Similar to f(R) gravity, on taking a generalization, f(T) gravity can produce various modifications its gravitational mechanism. The resulting field equations are inherently distinct to f(R) gravity in that they are second order. In the present work, f(T) gravity is examined in the cosmological context with a number of solutions reconstructed by means of an auxiliary scalar field…
In general description of the Raychaudhuri equation it is found that this first order non-linear differential equation can be written as a second order linear differential equation in the form of Harmonic Oscillator with varying frequency. Further, the integrability of the Raychaudhuri equation has been studied and also the expansion scalar is obtained in an explicit form. Subsequently, $f(R)$ gravity theory has been studied in the background of inhomogeneous FLRW spacetime with an aim to formulate the Raychaudhuri Equation. A congruence of time-like geodesics has been investigated using the R…
In a fully inhomogeneous, anisotropic cosmological simulation performed by solving Einstein's equations with numerical relativity, we find a local measurement of the effective Hubble parameter differs by less than 1\% compared to the global value. This variance is consistent with predictions from Newtonian gravity. We analyse the averaged local expansion rate on scales comparable to Type 1a supernova surveys, and find that local variance cannot resolve the tension between the \citet{riess2018b} and \citet{planck2018a} measurements.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the existence of static stable Einstein universe using inhomogeneous linear perturbations in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity ($R$ and $T$ denote the scalar curvature and trace of the stress-energy tensor, respectively). The static and perturbed field equations are constructed for perfect fluid parameterized by linear equation of state parameter. We obtain solutions manifesting the Einstein static state by considering peculiar $f(R,T)$ forms for vanishing and non-vanishing conservation of the stress-energy tensor. It is observed that stable static Einstei…
We review spherical and inhomogeneous analytic solutions of the field equations of Einstein and of scalar-tensor gravity, including Brans-Dicke theory, non-minimally (possibly conformally) coupled scalar fields, Horndeski, and beyond Horndeski/DHOST gravity. The zoo includes both static and dynamic solutions, asymptotically flat, and asymptotically Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker ones. We minimize overlap with existing books and reviews and we place emphasis on scalar field spacetimes and on geometries that are "general" within certain classes. Relations between various solutions, which ha…
Purely time dependent solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Cartan-Kalb-Ramond (ECKR) theory of gravity are shown not to be possible leading to a trivial vanishing of all Kalb-Ramond fields. This result seems to contradict previously results obtained by SenGupta et al. (Class. and Quantum Gravity 19(2002)677) where de Sitter spacetime solution is found as an example of opticaly active spacetime. It seems that only inhomogeneous KR fields are possible in four-dimensional torsioned spacetimes.
Based on the geometry of the codimension-2 surface in a general spherically symmetric spacetime, we give a quasi-local definition of a photon sphere as well as a photon surface. This new definition is the generalization of the one by Claudel, Virbhadra, and Ellis but without reference to any umbilical hypersurface in the spacetime. The new definition effectively rules out the photon surface which has noting to do with gravity. The application of the definition to the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of gravitational collapse reduces to a problem of a second order differential equation. We fin…
New nondiagonal $G_{2}$ inhomogeneous cosmological solutions are presented in a wide range of scalar-tensor theories with a stiff perfect fluid as a matter source. The solutions have no big-bang singularity or any other curvature singularities. The dilaton field and the fluid energy density are everywhere regular, too. The geodesic completeness of the solutions is investigated.
We investigate the existence of inhomogeneous Szekeres spacetimes in Einstein-æther theory. We show that inhomogeneous solutions which can be seen as extension of the Szekeres solutions existing in Einstein-æther gravity only for a specific relation between the dimensionless coefficients which defines the coupling between the æther filed with gravity. The two Szekeres classes of solutions are derived. Also a class of inhomogeneous FLRW-like spacetimes is allowed by the theory for arbitrary values of the dimensionless coefficients of the æther field. The stability of the solutions obtained is p…
The cosmological constant problem is studied in a two component cosmological model. The universe contains a cosmological constant of an arbitrary size and sign and an additional component with an inhomogeneous equation of state. It is shown that, in a proper parameter regime, the expansion of the universe with a large absolute value of the cosmological constant may asymptotically tend to de Sitter space corresponding to a small effective positive cosmological constant. It is argued that such a behavior can be regarded as a solution of the cosmological constant problem in this model. The mechan…
The paper deals with $f(R)$ gravity theory in the background of inhomogeneous FLRW--type space time model. With proper choice of the inhomogeneous metric function it is possible to have an emergent scenario for the $f(R)$--cosmology. Explicit form of $f(R)$ is obtained for power law expansion. It has been shown that the present $f(R)$ gravity model is equivalent to some particle creation mechanism in Einstein gravity. Further a complete cosmic evolution from inflation to present late time acceleration is possible with proper continuous choices of the $f(R)$--functions. Finally, in the perspect…
This brief article sums up results obtained in arXiv:0911.2653, which develops a constrained SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the "dipole" approximation. This is a further step toward the issue of a (inhomogeneous) loop quantum cosmology and its merging into loop quantum gravity.
Light propagation around a Kerr-like black hole immersed in an inhomogeneous anisotropic plasma in Rastall gravity: Analytical solutions to the equations of motion
