This paper studies the one-phase Muskat problem driven by gravity and surface tension. The regime considered here is unstable with the fluid on top of a dry region. By a novel approach using a depth-averaged formulation, we derive two asymptotic approximations for this scenario. The lower order approximation is the classical thin film equation, while the higher order approximation provides a new refined thin film equation. We prove the optimal order of convergence in the shallowness parameter to the original Muskat solutions for both models with low-regular initial data.
We obtain new semiclassical estimates for pseudodifferential operators with low regular symbols. Such symbols appear naturally in a Cauchy Problem related to recent weak solutions to the unstable Muskat problem constructed via convex integration in [CCF16]. In particular, our new estimates reveal the tight relation between the speed of opening of the mixing zone and the regularity of the interphase.
We construct mixing solutions to the incompressible porous media equation starting from Muskat type data in the partially unstable regime. In particular, we consider bubble and turned type interfaces with Sobolev regularity. As a by-product, we prove the continuation of the evolution of IPM after the Rayleigh-Taylor and smoothness breakdown exhibited in [18,17]. At each time slice the space is split into three evolving domains: two non-mixing zones and a mixing zone which is localized in a neighborhood of the unstable region. In this way, we show the compatibility between the classical Muskat …
In this paper, we study the dynamics of fluids in porous media governed by Darcy's law: the Muskat problem. We consider the setting of two immiscible fluids of different densities and viscosities under the influence of gravity in which one fluid is completely surrounded by the other. This setting is gravity unstable because along a portion of the interface, the denser fluid must be above the other. Surprisingly, even without capillarity, the circle-shaped bubble is a steady state solution moving with vertical constant velocity determined by the density jump between the fluids. Taking advantage…
We prove the existence of mixing solutions of the incompressible porous media equation for all Muskat type $H^5$ initial data in the fully unstable regime. The proof combines convex integration, contour dynamics and a basic calculus for non smooth semiclassical type pseudodifferential operators which is developed.
We prove the existence of infinitely many mixing solutions for the Muskat problem in the fully unstable regime displaying a linearly degraded macroscopic behaviour inside the mixing zone. In fact, we estimate the volume proportion of each fluid in every rectangle of the mixing zone. The proof is a refined version of the convex integration scheme presented in [DS10, Sze12] applied to the subsolution in [CCF16]. More generally, we obtain a quantitative h-principle for a class of evolution equations which shows that, in terms of weak*-continuous quantities, a generic solution in a suitable metric…
The Muskat problem models the filtration of two incompressible immiscible fluids of different characteristics in porous media. In this paper, we consider both the 2D and 3D setting of two fluids of different constant densities and different constant viscosities. In this situation, the related contour equations are non-local, not only in the evolution system, but also in the implicit relation between the amplitude of the vorticity and the free interface. Among other extra difficulties, no maximum principles are available for the amplitude and the slopes of the interface in $L^\infty$. We prove …
In this note, we give a rigorous proof that the NLS periodic Akhmediev breather is unstable. The proof follows the ideas in [17], in the sense that a suitable modification of the Stokes wave is the global attractor of the local Akhmediev dynamics for sufficiently large time, and therefore the latter cannot be stable in any suitable finite energy periodic Sobolev space.
We study the stability of an explicitly known, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution of the quadratic wave equation in the lowest energy supercritical dimension $d = 7$. This solution blows up at a single point and extends naturally away from the singularity. By using hyperboloidal similarity coordinates, we prove the conditional nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small, compactly supported radial perturbations in a region of spacetime which can be made arbitrarily close to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. To achieve this, we rigorously solve the underlying spectral…
