The integrated shear 3-point correlation function $ζ_{\pm}$ is a higher-order statistic of the cosmic shear field that describes the modulation of the 2-point correlation function $ξ_{\pm}$ by long-wavelength features in the field. Here, we introduce a new theoretical model to calculate $ζ_{\pm}$ that is accurate on small angular scales, and that allows to take baryonic feedback effects into account. Our model builds on the realization that the small-scale $ζ_{\pm}$ is dominated by the nonlinear matter bispectrum in the squeezed limit, which can be evaluated accurately using the nonlinear matter power spectrum and its first-order response functions to density and tidal field perturbations. We demonstrate the accuracy of our model by showing that it reproduces the small-scale $ζ_{\pm}$ measured in simulated cosmic shear maps. The impact of baryonic feedback enters effectively only through the corresponding impact on the nonlinear matter power spectrum, thereby permitting to account for these astrophysical effects on $ζ_{\pm}$ similarly to how they are currently accounted for on $ξ_{\pm}$. Using a simple idealized Fisher matrix forecast for a DES-like survey we find that, compared to $ξ_{\pm}$, a combined $ξ_{\pm}\ \&\ ζ_{\pm}$ analysis can lead to improvements of order $20-40\%$ on the constraints of cosmological parameters such as $σ_8$ or the dark energy equation of state parameter $w_0$. We find similar levels of improvement on the constraints of the baryonic feedback parameters, which strengthens the prospects for cosmic shear data to obtain tight constraints not only on cosmology but also on astrophysical feedback models. These are encouraging results that motivate future works on the integrated shear 3-point correlation function towards applications to real survey data.
We show that it is possible to build effective matter density power spectra in tomographic cosmic shear observations that exhibit the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) features once a nulling transformation has been applied to the data. The precision with which the amplitude and position of these features can be reconstructed is quantified in terms of sky coverage, intrinsic shape noise, median source redshift and number density of sources. BAO detection in Euclid or LSST like wide surveys will be possible with a modest signal-to-noise ratio. It would improve dramatically for slightly deepe…
We present a new method, called $x$-cut cosmic shear, which optimally removes sensitivity to poorly modeled scales from the two-point cosmic shear signal. We show that the $x$-cut cosmic shear covariance matrix can be computed from the correlation function covariance matrix in a few minutes, enabling a likelihood analysis at virtually no additional computational cost. Further we show how to generalize $x$-cut cosmic shear to galaxy-galaxy lensing. Performing an $x$-cut cosmic shear analysis of the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 (DESY1) shear data, we reduce the error on $S_8= σ_8 (Ω_m / 0.3) ^ {0.5…
Accurate knowledge of the effect of feedback from galaxy formation on the matter distribution is a key requirement for future weak lensing experiments. Recent studies using hydrodynamic simulations have shown that different baryonic feedback scenarios lead to significantly different two-point shear statistics. In this paper we extend earlier work to three-point shear statistics. We show that, relative to the predictions of dark matter only models, the amplitude of the signal can be reduced by as much as 30-40% on scales of a few arcminutes. We find that baryonic feedback may affect two- and th…
Baryonic effects are amongst the most severe systematics to the tomographic analysis of weak lensing data which is the principal probe in many future generations of cosmological surveys like LSST, Euclid etc.. Modeling or parameterizing these effects is essential in order to extract valuable constraints on cosmological parameters. In a recent paper, Eifler et al. (2015) suggested a reduction technique for baryonic effects by conducting a principal component analysis (PCA) and removing the largest baryonic eigenmodes from the data. In this article, we conducted the investigation further and add…
Systematic uncertainties that have been subdominant in past large-scale structure (LSS) surveys are likely to exceed statistical uncertainties of current and future LSS data sets, potentially limiting the extraction of cosmological information. Here we present a general framework (PCA marginalization) to consistently incorporate systematic effects into a likelihood analysis. This technique naturally accounts for degeneracies between nuisance parameters and can substantially reduce the dimension of the parameter space that needs to be sampled. As a practical application, we apply PCA marginaliz…

Cosmic shear is sensitive to fluctuations in the cosmological matter density field, including on small physical scales, where matter clustering is affected by baryonic physics in galaxies and galaxy clusters, such as star formation, supernovae feedback and AGN feedback. While muddying any cosmological information that is contained in small scale cosmic shear measurements, this does mean that cosmic shear has the potential to constrain baryonic physics and galaxy formation. We perform an analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Science Verification (SV) cosmic shear measurements, now extended t…
We use the small scales of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 cosmic shear measurements, which are excluded from the DES Year-3 cosmological analysis, to constrain the baryonic feedback. To model the baryonic feedback, we adopt a baryonic correction model and use the numerical package \texttt{Baccoemu} to accelerate the evaluation of the baryonic nonlinear matter power spectrum. We design our analysis pipeline to focus on the constraints of the baryonic suppression effects, utilizing the implication given by a principal component analysis on the Fisher forecasts. Our constraint on the baryoni…
One of the primary sources of uncertainties in modeling the cosmic-shear power spectrum on small scales is the effect of baryonic physics. Accurate cosmology for Stage-IV surveys requires knowledge of the matter power spectrum deep in the nonlinear regime at the percent level. Therefore, it is important to develop reliable mitigation techniques to take into account baryonic uncertainties if information from small scales is to be considered in the cosmological analysis. In this work, we develop a new mitigation method for dealing with baryonic physics for the case of the shear angular power spe…

Context. Accurate model predictions including the physics of baryons are required to make the most of the upcoming large cosmological surveys devoted to gravitational lensing. The advent of hydrodynamical cosmological simulations enables such predictions on sufficiently sizeable volumes. Aims. Lensing quantities (deflection, shear, convergence) and their statistics (convergence power spectrum, shear correlation functions, galaxy-galaxy lensing) are computed in the past lightcone built in the Horizon-AGN hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, which implements our best knowledge on baryonic phy…

While baryonic feedback is one of the most important astrophysical systematics that we need to address in order to achieve precision cosmology, few weak lensing studies have directly measured its impact on the matter power spectrum. We report measurement of the baryonic feedback parameter with the constraints on its lower and upper limits from cosmic shear. We use the public data from the Kilo-Degree Survey and the VISTA Kilo-Degree Infrared Galaxy Survey spanning 450 deg$^2$. Estimating both cosmological and feedback parameters simultaneously, we obtain $A_{\rm b}=1.01_{-0.85}^{+0.80}$, which…
We present cosmological parameter measurements from the Deep Lens Survey (DLS) using galaxy-mass and galaxy-galaxy power spectra in the multipole range $\ell=250\sim2000$. We measure galaxy-galaxy power spectra from two lens bins centered at $z\sim0.27$ and $0.54$ and galaxy-mass power spectra by cross-correlating the positions of galaxies in these two lens bins with galaxy shapes in two source bins centered at $z\sim0.64$ and $1.1$. We marginalize over a baryonic feedback process using a single-parameter representation and a sum of neutrino masses, as well as photometric redshift and shear ca…

We present a new method that deals with the uncertainty in matter-clustering in cosmic shear power spectrum analysis that arises mainly due to poorly understood nonlinear baryonic processes on small-scales. We show that the majority of information about dark energy physics contained in the shear power comes from these small-scales; removing these nonlinear scales from a cosmic shear analysis results in a 50% cut in the accuracy of measurements of dark energy parameters, marginalizing over all other parameters. In this paper we propose a method to recover the information on small-scales by allo…

The precision of Stage IV cosmic shear surveys will enable us to probe smaller physical scales than ever before, however, model uncertainties from baryonic physics and non-linear structure formation will become a significant concern. The $k$-cut method -- applying a redshift-dependent $\ell$-cut after making the Bernardeau-Nishimichi-Taruya transform -- can reduce sensitivity to baryonic physics; allowing Stage IV surveys to include information from increasingly higher $\ell$-modes. Here we address the question of whether it can also mitigate the impact of making the reduced shear approximatio…
We present the integrated 3-point shear correlation function $iζ_{\pm}$ -- a higher-order statistic of the cosmic shear field -- which can be directly estimated in wide-area weak lensing surveys without measuring the full 3-point shear correlation function, making this a practical and complementary tool to 2-point statistics for weak lensing cosmology. We define it as the 1-point aperture mass statistic $M_{\mathrm{ap}}$ measured at different locations on the shear field correlated with the corresponding local 2-point shear correlation function $ξ_{\pm}$. Building upon existing work on the int…
One of the most pernicious theoretical systematics facing upcoming gravitational lensing surveys is the uncertainty introduced by the effects of baryons on the power spectrum of the convergence field. One method that has been proposed to account for these effects is to allow several additional parameters (that characterize dark matter halos) to vary and to fit lensing data to these halo parameters concurrently with the standard set of cosmological parameters. We test this method. In particular, we use this technique to model convergence power spectrum predictions from a set of cosmological sim…
Baryonic feedback effects lead to a suppression of the weak lensing angular power spectrum on small scales. The poorly constrained shape and amplitude of this suppression is an important source of uncertainties for upcoming cosmological weak lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this first paper in a series of two, we use simulations to build a Euclid-like tomographic mock data-set for the cosmic shear power spectrum and the corresponding covariance matrix, which are both corrected for baryonic effects following the baryonification method of Schneider et al. (2019). In addition, we develo…
We present the first calculation of the cross-correlation between three-dimensional cosmic shear and the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (iSW) effect. Both signals are combined in a single formalism, which permits the computation of the full covariance matrix. In order to avoid the uncertainties presented by the non-linear evolution of the matter power spectrum and intrinsic alignments of galaxies, our analysis is restricted to large scales, i.e. multipoles below l=1000. We demonstrate in a Fisher analysis that this reduction compared to other studies of three-dimensional weak lensing extending to smal…

A measurement of the sum of neutrino masses is one of the main applications of upcoming measurements of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This measurement can be confounded by modelling uncertainties related to so-called "baryonic effects" on the clustering of matter, arising from gas dynamics, star formation, and feedback from active galactic nuclei and supernovae. In particular, a wrong assumption about the form of baryonic effects on CMB lensing can bias a neutrino mass measurement by a significant fraction of the statistical uncertainty. In this paper, we inve…
China Space Station Telescope (CSST) is a forthcoming powerful Stage IV space-based optical survey equipment. It is expected to explore a number of important cosmological problems in extremely high precision. In this work, we focus on investigating the constraints on neutrino mass and other cosmological parameters under the model of cold dark matter with a constant equation of state of dark energy ($w$CDM), using the mock data from the CSST photometric galaxy clustering and cosmic shear surveys (i.e. 3$\times$2pt). The systematics from galaxy bias, photometric redshift uncertainties, intrinsic…
Feedback processes from baryons are expected to strongly affect weak-lensing observables of current and future cosmological surveys. In this paper we present a new parametrisation of halo profiles based on gas, stellar, and dark matter density components. This parametrisation is used to modify outputs of gravity-only $N$-body simulations (following the prescription of Schneider and Teyssier [1]) in order to mimic baryonic effects on the matter density field. The resulting baryonic correction model relies on a few well motivated physical parameters and is able to reproduce the redshift zero clu…
There is currently a discrepancy in the measured value of the amplitude of matter clustering, parameterised using $σ_8$, inferred from galaxy weak lensing, and cosmic microwave background data, which could be an indication of new physics, such as massive neutrinos or a modification to the gravity law, or baryon feedback. In this paper we make the assumption that the cosmological parameters are well determined by Planck, and use weak lensing data to investigate the implications for baryon feedback and massive neutrinos, as well as possible contributions from intrinsic alignments and biases in p…
We develop an extension of \textit{the Halo Model} that describes analytically the corrections to the matter power spectrum due to the physics of baryons. We extend these corrections to the weak-lensing shear angular power spectrum. Within each halo, our baryonic model accounts for: 1) a central galaxy, the major stellar component whose properties are derived from abundance matching techniques; 2) a hot plasma in hydrostatic equilibrium and 3) an adiabatically-contracted dark matter component. This analytic approach allows us to compare our model to the dark-matter-only case. Our basic assumpt…
Using a series of cosmological simulations that includes one dark-matter-only (DM-only) run, one gas cooling-star formation-supernovae feedback (CSF) run and one that additionally includes feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we classify the large-scale structures with both a velocity-shear-tensor code (Vweb) and a tidal-tensor code (Pweb). We find that the baryonic processes have almost no impact on large-scale structures -- at least not when classified using aforementioned techniques. More importantly, our results confirm that the gas component alone can be used to infer the filament…
We use a combination of full hydrodynamic and dark matter only simulations to investigate the effect that baryonic physics and selecting super-cluster regions have on the matter power spectrum, by re-simulating a sample of super-cluster sub-volumes. On large scales we find that the matter power spectrum measured from our super-cluster sample has at least twice as much power as that measured from our random sample. Our investigation of the effect of baryonic physics on the matter power spectrum is found to be in agreement with previous studies and is weaker than the selection effect over the ma…
An accurate modelling of baryonic feedback effects is required to exploit the full potential of future weak-lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this second paper in a series of two, we combine Euclid-like mock data of the cosmic shear power spectrum with an eROSITA X-ray mock of the cluster gas fraction to run a combined likelihood analysis including both cosmological and baryonic parameters. Following the first paper of this series, the baryonic effects (based on the baryonic correction model of Schneider et al. 2019) are included in both the tomographic power spectrum and the covarian…
We evaluate the potential for current and future cosmic shear measurements from large galaxy surveys to constrain the impact of baryonic physics on the matter power spectrum. We do so using a model-independent parameterization that describes deviations of the matter power spectrum from the dark-matter-only case as a set of principal components that are localized in wavenumber and redshift. We perform forecasts for a variety of current and future datasets, and find that at least ~90% of the constraining power of these datasets is contained in no more than nine principal components. The constrai…
If left unchecked modeling uncertainties at small scales, due to poorly understood baryonic physics and non-linear structure formation, will significantly bias Stage IV cosmic shear two-point statistic parameter constraints. While it is perhaps possible to run N-body or hydrodynamical simulations to determine the impact of these effects this approach is computationally expensive; especially to test a large number of theories of gravity. Instead we propose directly removing sensitivity to small-scale structure from the lensing spectrum, creating a statistic that is robust to these uncertainties…
We demonstrate how to use persistent homology for cosmological parameter inference in a tomographic cosmic shear survey. We obtain the first cosmological parameter constraints from persistent homology by applying our method to the first-year data of the Dark Energy Survey. To obtain these constraints, we analyse the topological structure of the matter distribution by extracting persistence diagrams from signal-to-noise maps of aperture masses. This presents a natural extension to the widely used peak count statistics. Extracting the persistence diagrams from the cosmo-SLICS, a suite of $N$-bod…
Using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) year 1 data, we perform the first $k$-cut cosmic shear analysis constraining both $Λ$CDM and $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicki modified gravity. To generate the $f(R)$ cosmic shear theory vector, we use the matter power spectrum emulator trained on COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) simulations. The $k$-cut method is used to significantly down-weight sensitivity to small scale ($k > 1 \ h {\rm Mpc }^{-1}$) modes in the matter power spectrum where the emulator is less accurate, while simultaneously ensuring our results are robust to baryonic feedback model uncertainty.…
In the context of the study of the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect (ISW), we construct a template of the projected density distribution up to $z\simeq 0.7$ by using the Luminous Galaxies (LGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8. We use a photo-z catalogue trained with more than a hundred thousand galaxies from BOSS in the SDSS DR8 imaging area. We consider two different LG samples whose selection matches that of SDSS-III/BOSS: the LOWZ sample ($z\in [0.15,0.5]$) and the CMASS sample ($z\in[0.4,0.7]$). When building the LG density maps we use the information from star density, survey footprint…
Recent cosmic shear studies have reported discrepancies of up to $1σ$ on the parameter ${S_{8}=σ_{8}\sqrt{Ω_{\rm m}/0.3}}$ between the analysis of shear power spectra and two-point correlation functions, derived from the same shear catalogs. It is not a priori clear whether the measured discrepancies are consistent with statistical fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate this issue in the context of the forthcoming analyses from the third year data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y3). We analyze DES-Y3 mock catalogs from Gaussian simulations with a fast and accurate importance sampling pipe…
We examine the cosmological constraining power of future large-scale weak lensing surveys on the model of \emph{Euclid}, with particular reference to primordial non-Gaussianity. Our analysis considers several different estimators of the projected matter power spectrum, based on both shear and flexion, for which we review the covariances and Fisher matrices. The bounds provided by cosmic shear alone for the local bispectrum shape, marginalized over $σ_8$, are at the level of $Δf_\mathrm{NL} \sim 100$. We consider three additional bispectrum shapes, for which the cosmic shear constraints range f…
Gravitational weak lensing by dark matter halos leads to a measurable imprint in the shear correlation function of galaxies. Fuzzy dark matter (FDM), composed of ultralight axion-like particles of mass $m\sim 10^{-22}\text{ eV}$, suppresses the matter power spectrum and shear correlation with respect to standard cold dark matter. We model the effect of FDM on cosmic shear using the optimised halo model \textsc{HMCode}, accounting for additional suppression of the mass function and halo concentration in FDM as observed in $N$-body simulations. We combine Dark Energy Survey year 1 (DES-Y1) data …
