This experimental study of high-spin structure near N = Z = 20 nuclei was focused on $^{41}$K, but will also mention three newly observed $γ$ transitions in $^{41}$Ca observed in the same reaction. High-spin states were populated using the $^{26}$Mg($^{18}$O, $p2nγ$)$^{41}$K and $^{26}$Mg($^{18}$O, $3nγ$)$^{41}$Ca reactions. The experiment was carried out at an incident beam energy of 50 MeV at the Florida State University (FSU) John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory and used the FSU high-purity germanium detector array. The $^{41}$K level scheme was extended to 12325 keV, possibly with J$^π$ = 25/2$^-$ or 27/2$^+$, by means of 25 new transitions and that of $^{41}$Ca to 9916 keV. Linear polarization and a measure of angular distribution results are also reported and used to provide information on the spins and parities of several states in the $^{41}$K decay scheme. The results have been compared to the $spsdpf$ cross-shell FSU shell model interaction calculations. The theoretical results from configurations involving no or one additional nucleon promoted from the $sd$ to the $fp$ shell agree relatively well with the energies of known states, while those that involve multi-particle excitations paint an interesting and complex picture of interplay between single-particle excitations, collective pairing, and deformation. This presents an interesting challenge for future theory.
A search and research of long-range and short-range multiparticle correlations in pseudorapidity distribution of secondary particles on the base of analysis of individual interaction of nuclei of $^{197}Au$ at energy 10.7 AGeV with photoemulsion nuclei, is carried out. Events with long-range multiparticle correlations (LC), short-range multiparticle correlations (SC) and mixed type (MT) in pseudorapidity distribution of secondary particles, are selected by Hurst method in accordance of Hurst curve behavior. These types have significantly different characteristics. At first, they have different…
Nuclei in the upper-$sd$ shell usually exhibit characteristics of spherical single particle excitations. In the recent years, employment of sophisticated techniques of gamma spectroscopy has led to observation of high spin states of several nuclei near A$\simeq$ 40. In a few of them multiparticle, multihole rotational states coexist with states of single particle nature. We have studied a few nuclei in this mass region experimentally, using various campaigns of the Indian National Gamma Array setup. We have compared and combined our empirical observations with the large-scale shell model resul…
Essential properties of halo nuclei can be described in terms of a few low-energy constants. For neutron halo nuclei, analytical results can be found for wave functions and electromagnetic transition matrix-elements in simple but well-adapted models. These wave functions can be used to study nuclear reactions; an especially simple and instructive example is Coulomb excitation. A systematic expansion in terms of small parameters can be given. We present scaling laws for excitation amplitudes and cross sections. The results can be used to analyze experiments like ${}^{11}$Be Coulomb excitation. …
We review recent studies of the evolution of collective excitations in atomic nuclei far from the valley of $β$-stability. Collective degrees of freedom govern essential aspects of nuclear structure, and for several decades the study of collective modes such as rotations and vibrations has played a vital role in our understanding of complex properties of nuclei. The multipole response of unstable nuclei and the possible occurrence of new exotic modes of excitation in weakly-bound nuclear systems, present a rapidly growing field of research, but only few experimental studies of these phenomena …
Evidence of strong coupling of quasiparticle excitations with gamma-vibration is shown to occur in transitional nuclei. High-spin band structures in [166,168,170,172]Er are studied by employing the recently developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model approach. It is demonstrated that a low-lying K=3 band observed in these nuclei, the nature of which has remained unresolved, originates from the angular-momentum projection of triaxially deformed two-quasiparticle (qp) configurations. Further, it is predicted that the structure of this band depends critically on the shell filling…
For $N=Z$ odd-odd nuclei, a three-body model assuming two valence particles and an inert core can provide an understanding of pairing correlations in the ground state and spin-isospin excitations. However, since residual core-nucleon interactions can have a significant impact on these quantities, the inclusion of core excitations in the model is essential for useful calculation to be performed. The effect of core excitations must be included in order to gain a detailed understanding of both the ground state and spin-isospin properties of these systems. To this end, we include the vibrational e…
Excitation energies and transition probabilities of the first 2+ excitations in even lead, tin and nickel isotopes are calculated within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. A reasonable agreement with available experimental data is obtained. The effect of the density dependence of the effective pairing interaction is analyzed in detail by comparing results obtained with volume and surface pairing. The effect is found to be noticeable, especially for the 2+ energies which are systematically higher at 200-300 keV for the volu…
Excitation energies and transition probabilities of the first $2^+$ excitations in even tin and lead isotopes as well as the quadrupole moments of odd neighbors of these isotopes are calculated within the self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems based on the Energy Density Functional by Fayans et al. The effect of the density dependence of the effective pairing interaction is analyzed in detail by comparing results obtained with volume and surface pairing. The effect is found to be noticeable. For example, the $2^+$-energies are systematically higher at 200-300 keV for the volume paring …
Low-frequency modes of excitation in deformed neutron-rich nuclei are studied by means of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean field. We investigate the microscopic structure of the soft $K^π=0^{+}$ modes systematically in neutron-rich Magnesium isotopes with $N=22, 24, 26$ and 28 close to the drip line, and it is found that the strong collectivity in $^{34}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg is acquired due to the coherent coupling between the $β$ vibration and the pairing vibration of neutrons. Microscopic structure of the $K^π=2^{+}$ modes changes gradually …
In this work, we reexamine the extension of the CDCC formalism to include target excitation and apply it to a variety of reactions to study the effect of breakup on inelastic cross sections. We use a transformed oscillator basis to discretize the continuum of the projectiles in the different reactions and use the extended CDCC method developed in this work to solve the resulting coupled differential equations. A new code has been developed to perform the calculations. Reactions 58Ni(d, d) 58Ni*, 24Mg(d, d) 24Mg* , 144Sm( 6Li, 6Li) 144Sm* and 9Be( 6Li, 6Li) 9Be* are studied. Satisfactory agreem…
In this contribution, I will discuss two topics related to the clustering of atomic nuclei. The first is dual character of the ground state. Recently, it was pointed out that the ground states of atomic nuclei have dual character of shell and cluster implying that both of the single-particle excitation and cluster excitation occur as the fundamental excitation modes. The isoscalar monopole and dipole transitions are regarded as the triggers to induce the cluster excitation. By referring the Hartree-Fock and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations, the dual character and those transitio…
New polarization potentials have been determined based on: 1) the latest photo-neutron cross section evaluation and a missing factor of two in previous work, and 2) the mass dependency of the symmetry energy, $a_{sym}(A)$. The magnitude of the first one is 35\% stronger than the currently accepted polarization potential. The second one opens up the possibility for a parameter-free polarization potential. Both polarization potentials are essentially the same for heavy nuclei. The polarization effect on quadrupole collectivity is more substantial than previously assumed for light nuclei. Particu…
We extend our previous calculation of the breakup of 11Be using Halo Effective Field Theory and the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation to include an effective 10Be-n-target force. The force is constructed to account for the virtual excitation of 10Be to its low-lying 2+ excited state. In the case of breakup on a 12C target this improves the description of the neutron-energy and angular spectra, especially in the vicinity of the 11Be 5/2+ state. By fine-tuning the range parameters of the three-body force, a reasonable description of data in the region of the 3/2+ 11Be state can also be obtained. T…
The Gamow-Teller strength in nuclei can be strongly affected by the internal degrees of freedom of the nucleon. It is demonstrated that this feature is unique to the Gamow-Teller. Excitation modes that involve spatial degrees of freedom are much less influenced by the internal excitation of nucleons. The fact that the observed Gamow-Teller strength is quenched by 30-40 percent in all nuclei suggests that indeed this is due to the nucleon excitation in nuclei.
The phenomenon of core excitation in the breakup of a two-body halo nucleus is investigated. We show that this effect plays a significant role in the reaction dynamics and, furthermore, its interference with the valence excitation mechanism has sizable and measurable effects on the breakup angular distributions. These effects have been studied in the resonant breakup of 11Be on a carbon target, populating the resonances at 1.78 MeV (5/2+) and 3.41 MeV (3/2+). The calculations have been performed using a recently extension of the DWBA method, which takes into account the effect of core excitati…
In highly dissipative collisions between heavy ions, the optimal conditions to investigate different de-excitation channels of hot nuclei such as evaporation, fission or multifragmentation are well known. One crucial issue remains the excitation energy region where fission gives way to multifragmentation. In this paper, the onset of multi-fragment exit channels is investigated in terms of sequential fission. For the first time, the dynamical approach based on solving Langevin transport equations in multidimensional collective coordinate space is used to follow the de-excitation of highly excit…
This article provides an insight into several open problems in the quest for novel modes of excitation in nuclei with isospin asymmetry, deformation and finite temperature characteristic in stellar environment. Major unsolved problems include the nature of pygmy dipole resonances, the quest for various multipole and spin-isospin excitations both in neutron-rich and proton drip-line nuclei mainly driven by loosely bound nucleons, excitations in unstable deformed nuclei and evolution of their properties with the shape phase transition. Exotic modes of excitation in nuclei at finite temperatures …
Background: Magnetic dipole (M1) excitation is the leading mode of nuclear excitation by the magnetic field, which couples unnatural-parity states. Since the M1 excitation occurs mainly for open-shell nuclei, the nuclear pairing effect is expected to play a role. As expected from the form of operator, this mode may provide the information on the spin-related properties, including the spin component of dineutron and diproton correlations. In general, the sum rule for M1 transition strength has not been derived yet. Purpose: To investigate the M1 excitation of the systems with two valence nucleo…
Paring correlations in weakly bound nuclei on the edge of neutron drip line is studied by using a three-body model. A density-dependent contact interaction is employed to calculate the ground state of halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li, as well as a skin nucleus $^{24}$O. Dipole excitations in these nuclei are also studied within the same model. We point out that the di-neutron type correlation plays a dominant role in the halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li having the coupled spin of the two neutrons $S$=0, while the correlation similar to the BCS type is important in $^{24}$O. Contributions o…
We study relationships between properties of collective excitations in finite nuclei and the phase transition density $n_t$ and pressure $P_t$ at the inner edge separating the liquid core and the solid crust of a neutron star. A theoretical framework that includes the thermodynamic method, relativistic nuclear energy density functionals and the quasiparticle random-phase approximation is employed in a self-consistent calculation of $(n_t,P_t)$ and collective excitations in nuclei. The covariance analysis shows that properties of charge-exchange dipole transitions, isovector giant dipole and qu…
We study coherent Coulomb excitation of ultrarelativistic nuclei passing through the aligned crystal target. We develop multiple scattering theory description of this process which consistently incorporates both the specific resonant properties of particle-crystal interactions and the shadowing effect typical of the diffractive scattering. We emphasise that the effect of quantum mechanical diffraction makes the physics of ultrarelativistic nuclear excitations entirely different from the physics of non-relativistic atomic excitations experimentally studied so far. It is found that at small tran…
We search for an evidence of eta-mesic 4He with the WASA-at-COSY detector. Two dedicated experiments were performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich. The experimental method is based on the measurement of the excitation functions for the two reaction channels: dd-->3Heppi- and dd-->3Henpi0, where the outgoing N-pi pairs originate from the conversion of the eta meson on a nucleon inside the He nucleus. In this contribution, the experimental method is shortly described and preliminary excitation functions from the 2010 data are presented.
The density of accessible levels at low spin in the (^3He,αγ) reaction has been extracted for the ^{161,162}Dy and ^{171,172}Yb nuclei. The entropy of the even-odd and even-even nuclei has been deduced as a function of excitation energy, and found to reach a maximum of 15 k_B before neutron evaporation. The entropy of one quasi-particle outside an even-even core is found to be 1.70(15) k_B. This quasi-particle picture of hot nuclei is well accounted for within a simple pairing model. The onset of two, four and six quasi-particle excitations in the ^{162}Dy and ^{172}Yb nuclei is discussed and …
The nucleus is one of the most multi-faceted many-body systems in the universe. It exhibits a multitude of responses depending on the way one 'probes' it. With increasing technical advancements of beams at the various accelerators and of detection systems the nucleus has, over and over again, surprised us by expressing always new ways of 'organized' structures and layers of complexity. Nuclear magnetism is one of those fascinating faces of the atomic nucleus we discuss in the present review. We shall not just limit ourselves to presenting the by now very large data set that has been obtained i…
Excitation-energy distributions have been derived from measurements of 5.0-14.6 GeV/c antiproton, proton and pion reactions with $^{197}$Au target nuclei, using the ISiS 4$π$ detector array. The maximum probability for producing high excitation-energy events is found for the antiproton beam relative to other hadrons, $^3$He and $\bar{p}$ beams from LEAR. For protons and pions, the excitation-energy distributions are nearly independent of hadron type and beam momentum above about 8 GeV/c. The excitation energy enhancement for $\bar{p}$ beams and the saturation effect are qualitatively consisten…
We implement the de-excitation processes of residual nuclei associated with proton decays in $^{12} {\rm C}$ based on the GENIE generator and TALYS code. To derive the reasonable excitation energy spectra of residual nuclei $^{11} {\rm B}$, $^{10} {\rm B}$ and $^{10} {\rm Be}$, the default GENIE nucleon decay generator is modified in terms of the Spectral Function nuclear model. Then we use the TALYS code to estimate the de-excitation processes of residual nuclei. The TALYS calculation can partly account for the experimental data.
We present results of collisions of $^{90}$Zr+$^{90}$Zr and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr obtained within time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) extended to superfluid systems, known as time-dependent superfluid local density approximation (TDSLDA). We discuss qualitatively new features occurring in collisions of two superfluid nuclei at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. We show that a \textit{solitonic excitation} -- an abrupt pairing phase distortion -- reported previously [P.~Magierski et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{119}, 042501 (2017)], increases the barrier for capture ge…
Level density and radiative strength functions are obtained from the analysis of two-step cascades intensities following the thermal neutrons capture. The data on level density are approximated by the sum of the partial level densities corresponding to n quasiparticles excitation. The most probable values of the collective enhancement factor of the level density are found together with the thresholds of the next Cooper nucleons pair breaking. These data allow one to calculate the level density of practically any nucleus in given spin window in the framework of model concepts, taking into accou…
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear…
We report on the experimental study of quadrupole collectivity in the neutron-deficient nucleus \nuc{104}{Sn} using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. The $B(E2; 0^+_1 \rightarrow 2^+_1)$ value for the excitation of the first $2^+$ state in \nuc{104}{Sn} has been measured to be $0.180(37)~e^2$b$^2$ relative to the well-known $B(E2)$ value of \nuc{102}{Cd}. This result disagrees by more than one sigma with a recently published measurement \cite{Gua13}. Our result indicates that the most modern many-body calculations remain unable to describe the enhanced collectivity below mid-shell in Sn …
Exotic Ni isotopes have been measured at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI in Darmstadt, using Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at beam energies around 500 MeV/u. As the experimental setup allows kinematically complete measurements, the excitation energy was reconstructed using the invariant mass method. The GDR and additional low-lying strength have been observed in 68Ni, the latter exhausting 4.1(1.9)% of the E1 energy-weighted sum rule. Also, the branching ratio for the non-statistical decay of the excited 68Ni nuclei was measured and amounts to 24(4)%.
Recently, we have reported a novel role of pairing in low-energy heavy ion reactions at energies above the Coulomb barrier, which may have a detectable impact on reaction outcomes, such as the kinetic energy of fragments and the fusion cross section [arXiv:1611.10261, arXiv:1702.00069]. The phenomenon mimics the one studied experimentally with ultracold atomic gases, where two clouds of fermionic superfluids with different phases of the pairing fields are forced to merge, inducing various excitation modes of the pairing field. Although it originates from the phase difference of the pairing fie…
