Motivated by the study of small amplitudes non-linear waves in the Anti-de-Sitter spacetime and in particular the conjectured existence of periodic in time solutions to the Einstein equations, we construct families of arbitrary small time-periodic solutions to the conformal cubic wave equation and the spherically-symmetric Yang-Mills equations on the Einstein cylinder $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{S}^3$. For the conformal cubic wave equation, we consider both spherically-symmetric solutions and complexed-valued aspherical solutions with an ansatz relying on the Hopf fibration of the $3$-sphere. In all three cases, the equations reduce to $1+1$ semi-linear wave equations. Our proof relies on a theorem of Bambusi-Paleari for which the main assumption is the existence of a seed solution, given by a non-degenerate zero of a non-linear operator associated with the resonant system. For the problems that we consider, such seed solutions are simply given by the mode solutions of the linearized equations. Provided that the Fourier coefficients of the systems can be computed, the non-degeneracy conditions then amount to solving infinite dimensional linear systems. Since the eigenfunctions for all three cases studied are given by Jacobi polynomials, we derive the different Fourier and resonant systems using linearization and connection formulas as well as integral transformation of Jacobi polynomials. In the Yang-Mills case, the original version of the theorem of Bambusi-Paleari is not applicable because the non-linearity of smallest degree is nonresonant. The resonant terms are then provided by the next order non-linear terms with an extra correction due to backreaction terms of the smallest degree non-linearity and we prove an analogous theorem in this setting.
We consider the conformal wave equation on the Einstein cylinder with a defocusing cubic non-linearity. Motivated by a method developed by Rostworowski-Maliborski on the existence of time periodic solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon system, we study perturbations around the zero solution as a formal series expansion and assume that the perturbations bifurcate from $1-$mode. In the center of this work stands a rigorous proof on how one can choose the initial data to cancel out all secular terms in the resonant system. Interestingly, our analysis reveals that the only po…
Global regular axially symmetric solutions with large swirl in a cylinder with periodic conditions on the top and on the bottom are proved. On the lateral part of its boundary the boundary slip conditions are assumed. The proof is obtained step by step extending a local solution and showing that the initial data are not increasing.
In this paper, for a family of second-order parabolic equation with rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients, we are interested in an approximate two-sphere one-cylinder inequality for these solutions in parabolic periodic homogenization, which implies an approximate quantitative propagation of smallness. The proof relies on the asymptotic behavior of fundamental solutions and the Lagrange interpolation technique.
We consider the homogenization of an elliptic spectral problem with a large potential stated in a thin cylinder with a locally periodic perforation. The size of the perforation gradually varies from point to point. We impose homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the boundary of perforation and on the lateral boundary of the cylinder. The presence of a large parameter $1/\varepsilon$ in front of the potential and the dependence of the perforation on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a…
We consider the motion of a viscous compressible and heat conducting fluid confined in the gap between two rotating cylinders (Taylor-Couette flow). The temperature of the cylinders is fixed but not necessarily constant. We show that the problem admits a time--periodic solution as soon as the ratio of the angular velocities of the two cylinders is a rational number.
We provide general sufficient conditions for branching out of a time-periodic family of solutions from steady-state solutions to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder. To this end, we first show that the problem can be formulated as a coupled elliptic-parabolic nonlinear system in appropriate function spaces. This is obtained by separating the time-independent averaged component of the velocity field from its "purely periodic" one. We then prove that time-periodic bifurcation occurs, provided the linearized time-independent operator of the parabolic problem …
The aim of this paper is to adapt the notion of two-scale convergence in $L^p$ to the case of a measure converging to a singular one. We present a specific case when a thin cylinder with locally periodic rapidly oscillating boundary shrinks to a segment, and the corresponding measure charging the cylinder converges to a one-dimensional Lebegues measure of an interval. The method is then applied to the asymptotic analysis of linear elliptic operators with locally periodic coefficients in a thin cylinder with locally periodic rapidly varying thickness.
Asymptotic behavior and Liouville-type theorems for axisymmetric stationary Navier-Stokes equations outside of an infinite cylinder with a periodic boundary condition
We determine the effective complex permittivity of a two-dimensional composite, consisting of an arbitrary doubly periodic array of identical circular cylinders in a homogeneous matrix, and whose dielectric properties are complex-valued. Efficient formulas are provided to determine the effective complex permittivity tensor which are in excellent agreement with numerical calculations. We also show that in contrast to the real-valued case, the real and imaginary parts of the effective complex-valued tensor can exhibit non-monotonic behavior as functions of volume fraction of cylinders, and can b…
This work concerns stability and instability of Einstein warped products with an Einsteinian fiber of codimension 1. We study the cases where the scalar curvature of the warped product and of the fiber are either both positive or both negative to complement the results in [Krö16]. Up to a small gap in the case of sin-cones, the stability properties of such warped products are now completely determined by spectral properties of the Laplacian and the Einstein operator of the fiber. For cosh-cylinders, we are furthermore able to prove a convergence result for the Ricci flow starting in a small ne…
We consider the problem of homogenization for non-self-adjoint second-order elliptic differential operators~$\mathcal{A}^{\varepsilon}$ of divergence form on $L_{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d_{1}}\times\mathbb{T}^{d_{2}})$, where $d_{1}$ is positive and~$d_{2}$ is non-negative. The~coefficients of the operator~$\mathcal{A}^{\varepsilon}$ are periodic in the first variable with period~$\varepsilon$ and smooth in a certain sense in the second. We show that, as $\varepsilon$ gets small, $(\mathcal{A}^{\varepsilon}-μ)^{-1}$ and~$D_{x_{2}}(\mathcal{A}^{\varepsilon}-μ)^{-1}$ converge in the operator norm to, res…
We study the existence and uniqueness of a solution to a linear stationary convection-diffusion equation stated in an infinite cylinder, Neumann boundary condition being imposed on the boundary. We assume that the cylinder is a junction of two semi-infinite cylinders with two different periodic regimes. Depending on the direction of the effective convection in the two semi-infinite cylinders, we either get a unique solution, or one-parameter family of solutions, or even non-existence in the general case. In the latter case we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a s…
We prove existence and uniqueness for fully-developed (Poiseuille-type) flows in semi-infinite cylinders, in the setting of (time) almost-periodic functions. In the case of Stepanov almost-periodic functions the proof is based on a detailed variational analysis of a linear "inverse" problem, while in the Besicovitch setting the proof follows by a precise analysis in wave-numbers. Next, we use our results to construct a unique almost periodic solution to the so called "Leray's problem" concerning 3D fluid motion in two semi-infinite cylinders connected by a bounded reservoir. In the case of Ste…
We determine the effective conductivity of a two-dimensional composite consisting of a doubly periodic array of identical circular cylinders within a homogeneous matrix. We obtain an exact analytic expression for the effective conductivity tensor as well as its expansion in terms of volume fraction of the cylinders. Results are illustrated by examples.
A first order differential equation with a periodic operator coefficient acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces is considered. This setting models both elliptic equations with periodic coefficients in a cylinder and parabolic equations with time periodic coefficients. Our main results are a construction of a pointwise projector and a spectral splitting of the system into a finite dimensional system of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients and an infinite dimensional part whose solutions have better properties in a certain sense. This complements the well-known asymptotic resul…
We construct one-parameter families of solutions to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations bifurcating off the Kerr solution such that the underlying family of spacetimes are each an asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, black hole spacetime, and such that the corresponding scalar fields are non-zero and time-periodic. An immediate corollary is that for these Klein--Gordon masses, the Kerr family is not asymptotically stable as a solution to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations.
We study the surface diffusion flow acting on a class of general (non--axisymmetric) perturbations of cylinders $\mathcal{C}_r$ in ${\rm I \! R}^3$. Using tools from parabolic theory on uniformly regular manifolds, and maximal regularity, we establish existence and uniqueness of solutions to surface diffusion flow starting from (spatially--unbounded) surfaces defined over $\mathcal{C}_r$ via scalar height functions which are uniformly bounded away from the central cylindrical axis. Additionally, we show that $\mathcal{C}_r$ is normally stable with respect to $2 π$--axially--periodic perturbati…
We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the dimensionless wave frequency $ν\ll 1$ that allows us to view the governing equation as a perturbation of the Laplace equation. We show that the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues are even analytic functions of the magnitude …
