Fiber Bragg Gratings have been advantageously used to improve the chaotic properties of semiconductor lasers. Though these components are known to be highly sensitive to environmental conditions, feedback phase fluctuations are often neglected. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that the small variations of the propagation time induced by a simple thermal tuning of the FBG is sufficient to induce significant changes of the laser behavior. We report periodic stability enhancements linked with phase variations and highlight that both phase variation and phase offsets play an important role. Last, we show a good qualitative agreement with simulations based on an expanded version of the Lang-Kobayashi model.

We report a wavelength-tunable Q-switched mode-locked fiber laser based on a compact optical tuning device, which is fabricated by coating single-layer graphene on the surface of micro-fiber Bragg grating (MFBG). Based on thermal-optical effect through evanescent interaction between graphene and MFBG, the center wavelength of MFBG can be accurately controlled by adjusting power of an external laser. By inserting the fabricated device into a compact fiber laser cavity mode-locked by single-wall carbon nanotubes, stable Q-switched mode-locked pulse is generated. Experimental results show that th…
Time delay signature (TDS) of a semiconductor laser subject to dispersive optical feedback from a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is investigated experimentally and numerically. Different from mirror, CFBG provides additional frequency-dependent delay caused by dispersion, and thus induces external-cavity modes with irregular mode separation rather than a fixed separation induced by mirror feedback. Compared with mirror feedback, the CFBG feedback can greatly depress and even eliminate the TDS, although it leads to a similar quasi-period route to chaos with increases of feedback. In experim…
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with an inverse-Gaussian apodization function is proposed and fabricated. It is shown that such a FBG possesses easily controllable dual-wavelength narrow transmission peaks. Incorporating such a FBG filter in a fiber laser with a linear cavity, stable dual-wavelength emission with 0.146 nm wavelength spacing is obtained. It provides a simple and low cost approach of achieving the dual-wavelength fiber laser operation.
Low-phase-noise and pure-spectrum Raman light is vital for high-precision atom interferometry by two-photon Raman transition. A preferred and prevalent solution for Raman light generation is electro-optic phase modulation. However, phase modulation inherently brings in double sidebands, resulting in residual sideband effects of multiple laser pairs beside Raman light in atom interferometry. Based on a well-designed rectangular fiber Bragg grating and an electro-optic modulator, optical single-sideband modulation has been realized at 1560 nm with a stable suppression ratio better than -25 dB de…
We present a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of a dual-wavelength, bismuth-doped fiber (BDF) laser operating near 1700 nm based on cascaded cavities. The BDF provides optical gain from 1650 nm to 1800 nm when pumped at 1550 nm; the laser cavity is defined by a 90% mirror on one end and two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) separated by a length of BDF on the other. The laser can operate at either wavelength alone or both wavelengths simultaneously by simple adjustment of the pump power. Experimental results correlate well simulations based on a theoretical model of the laser…

Stable solitary mode-locking is obtained in a fiber-oscillator utilizing a carefully designed chirped fiber-Bragg-grating (C-FBG) for both dispersion control and spectral filtering. Self-starting is assured through the use of a fiber-coupled semiconductor-saturable-absorber-mirror (SESAM). The oscillator's 50MHz 3.8ps pulse-train output at 1064nm wavelength is amplified to 1.2W average power by an Yb doped fiber-amplifier, yielding 6.45ps parabolic pulses. Numerical simulations of the fiber…
We have developed a linearly-polarized Ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser with single longitudinal-mode output at 1064nm for LISA and other space applications. Single longitudinal-mode selection was achieved by using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP). The FFP also serves as a frequency-reference within our ring laser. Our laser exhibits comparable low frequency and intensity noise to Non-Planar Ring Oscillator (NPRO). By using a fiber-coupled phase modulator as a frequency actuator, the laser frequency can be electro-optically tuned at a rate of 100kHz. It appears that ou…

Delayed feedback laser dynamics is described by means of Lang-Kobayashi equation model. Since a lot of initial states asymptotically approach to periodic attractor in the phase space, only periodic steady-state regimes have been studied here. Lyapunov transformation allows us to reduce problem to the differential equation of the first order whereas the spectrum of laser oscillation is governed by the appropriate eigen value problem. Using the symmetry proves that there is the dual laser system with anticipated feedback which has the same dynamic characteristics as laser with delayed feedback.
We describe the design of a new family of high spectral brightness narrow linewidth (NLW) mid-infrared (MIR) lasers of < 1 MHz anticipated linewidths with potential for operation at any target wavelength between 2.5 and 9.5 um. More specifically, we analyze the potential performance characteristics of mid-infrared distributed feedback (DFB) Raman fiber lasers (RFLs) based on Pi-phase-shifted (PPS) Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) written in appropriately chosen low-phonon-energy glass fibers. In particular, we calculate anticipated threshold pump powers for optimal laser designs and pump wavelength…
Chaotic oscillations of a linearly polarized single longitudinal-mode thin-slice Nd:GdVO4 laser placed in a self-mixing laser Doppler velocity scheme were dynamic characterized in terms the intensity probability distribution, joint time-frequency analysis and short-term Fourier transformation of temporal evolutions, and the degree of disorder in the amplitude and phase of the long-term temporal evolutions. The transition from chaotic relaxation oscillations (RO) to chaotic spiking oscillations (SO) was explored via the chaotic itinerancy (CI) regime by increasing the feedback ratio toward the …
Semiconductor lasers exhibit a wealth of dynamics, from emission of a constant beam of light, to periodic oscillations and excitability. Self-pulsing regimes, where the laser periodically releases a short pulse of light, are particularly interesting for many applications, from material science to telecommunications. Self-pulsing regimes need to produce pulses very regularly and, as such, they are also known to be particularly sensitive to perturbations, such as noise or light injection. We investigate the effect of delayed optical feedback on the dynamics of a self-pulsing semiconductor laser …
We analyze how a star network topology shapes the dynamics of coupled CO\textsubscript{2} lasers with an intracavity electro-optic modulator that exhibit bistability. Such a network supports spreading and stationary activation patterns. In particular, we observe an activation spreading where the activated periphery turns on the center element, an activated center which drifts the periphery into the active region and an activation of the whole system from the passive into the active region. Pinned activation, namely activation localized only in the center or the peripheral elements is also foun…
The influence of optical feedback on semiconductor lasers has been a widely studied field of research due to fundamental interests as well as the optimization of optical data transmission and computing. Recent publications have shown that it is possible to induce a periodic pulsed like output in quantum-dot and quantum-well laser diodes utilizing the locking of the external cavity modes and the relaxation oscillation frequency. We present an in-depth analysis of this effect. We choose submonolayer quantum dots as a gain system, as these provide a relatively strong amplitude-phase coupling, whi…
We experimentally study a semiconductor laser subject to two optical feedbacks in a free space setup. We show that the time delay signature, manifesting itself in the chaotic output intensity, can be better suppressed than in a laser with single feedback. We demonstrate that the control of the feedback phase is essential to suppress the time delay signature, in contrast to the one-delay case, and that the feedback phase also impacts the chaotic bandwidth. By optimizing the feedback phase the time delay signature can be reduced by a factor of 2 while maintaining a large chaotic bandwidth.
We revisit the model of the laser with feedback and the minimal nonlinearity leading to chaos. Although the model has its origin in laser physics, with peculiarities related to the CO2 laser, it belongs to the class of the three dimensional paradigmatic nonlinear oscillator models giving chaos. The proposed model contains three key nonlinearities, two of which are of the type xy, where x and y are the fast and slow variables. The third one is of the type xz^2, where z is an intermediate feedback variable. We analytically demonstrate that it is essential for producing chaos via local or global …
A novel model of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback is presented, generalizing Lang-Kobayashi equations to the case of incoherent feedback. The equations are supplemented by a stochastic variable which models random phase difference between the field inside laser cavity and the feedback field. It is shown that for weak-to-moderate feedback the transition from coherent to incoherent feedback leads to replacement of dynamical chaos by almost stationary lasing with slightly fluctuating intensity. Nevertheless, incoherent feedback can lead to chaotic oscillations, but at considerably larg…
We demonstrate a combination of optical and electronic feedback that significantly narrows the linewidth of distributed Bragg reflector lasers (DBRs). We use optical feedback from a long external fiber path to reduce the high-frequency noise of the laser. An electro-optic modulator placed inside the optical feedback path allows us to apply electronic feedback to the laser frequency with very large bandwidth, enabling robust and stable locking to a reference cavity that suppresses low-frequency components of laser noise. The combination of optical and electronic feedback allows us to significan…
A semiconductor laser subject to delayed optical feedback is investigated in the limit of extremely intense feedback power. In a range of feedback polarization rotation angles the emission spectra of the laser reveal a giant gap with width of more than a terahertz. The position of the gap and its width are shown to be regulated by means of feedback polarization rotation angle. We demonstrate that a theoretical approach, based on carrier density grating induced potential, explains our experimental results.
The three goals of this PhD thesis are to improve the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the dynamical instabilities observed in semiconductor lasers subject to external optical feedback, to propose a technique to suppress these instabilities and finally to take advantage of them, for instance for secure communications or to generate microwave time-periodic oscillations.
We present a photon noise and diffraction limited imaging method combining the imaging laser and ultrasonic waves. The laser optical feedback imaging (LOFI) technique is an ultrasensitive imaging method for imaging objects through or embedded within a scattering medium. However, LOFI performances are dramatically limited by parasitic optical feedback occurring in the experimental setup. In this work, we have tagged the ballistic photons by an acousto-optic effect in order to filter the parasitic feedback effect and to reach the theoretical and ultimate sensitivity of the LOFI technique. We pre…
We present a frequency-shifted feedback (FSF) laser based on a tapered amplifier. The laser operates as a coherent broadband source with up to 370GHz spectral width and 2.3us coherence time. If the FSF laser is seeded by a continuous-wave laser a frequency comb spanning the output spectrum appears in addition to the broadband emission. The laser has an output power of 280mW and a center wavelength of 780nm. The ease and flexibility of use of tapered amplifiers makes our FSF laser attractive for a wide range of applications, especially in metrology.
In this paper we propose a new optical architecture for the laser optical feedback imaging (LOFI) technique which makes it possible to avoid the adverse effect of the optical parasitic backscattering introduced by all the optical interfaces located between the laser source and the studied object. This proposed setup need no specific or complex alignment, that why we can consider the proposed setup as self aligned. We describe the principle used to avoid the parasitic backscattering contributions which deteriorate dramatically amplitude and phase information contained in the LOFI images. Finall…
High-coherence light sources with an ultra-narrow linewidth are of considerable research interests in numerous fields, such as laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory, laser radio, etc. Herein, commencing from the in-depth analysis for consumption and replenishment law of the carriers in the gain-band under excitation of the feedback signal, a compression idea to compress extremely laser linewidth assisted by distributed feedback has been proposed. Consequentially, a novel laser configuration is demonstrated. A cavity mode signal matching with the output wavelength is fed back into…
A broadband chaotic laser with a flat power spectrum extending up to 8.5GHz is achieved by injecting continuous wave laser light into a chaotic diode laser perturbed by fiber random grating induced distributed feedback, which forms a gain-coupled chaotic laser system. More than triple bandwidth enhancement is realized with appropriate frequency detuning between the master and slave lasers. Unlike normal chaotic lasers, the output from such a broadband chaotic laser is free from time-delay signature, which can be applied for practical real-time random number generations and will find useful app…
To increase the spectral efficiency of coherent communication systems, lasers with ever-narrower linewidths are required as they enable higher-order modulation formats with lower bit-error rates. In particular, semiconductor lasers are a key component due to their compactness, low power consumption, and potential for mass production. In field-testing scenarios their output is coupled to a fiber, making them susceptible to external optical feedback (EOF). This has a detrimental effect on its stability, thus it is traditionally countered by employing, for example, optical isolators and angled ou…
We have demonstrated that a rather weak external optical feedback with delay can lead to the mode switching of the counterpropogating modes. The delay time should be longer then any system characteristic time. The equations describing the ring resonator with the delayed optical feedback was obtained from the first principles. The analytical formula for the necessary external feedback strength was derived. Other than the regular behavior, the system demonstrates a complex chaotic behavior.
We demonstrate that a semiconductor laser perturbed by the distributed feedback from a fiber random grating can emit light chaotically without the time delay signature. A theoretical model is developed based on the Lang-Kobayashi model in order to numerically explore the chaotic dynamics of the laser diode subjected to the random distributed feedback. It is predicted that the random distributed feedback is superior to the single reflection feedback in suppressing the time-delay signature. In experiments, a massive number of feedbacks with randomly varied time delays induced by a fiber random g…
A single longitudinal mode fiber laser with ultra-narrow linewidth based on self-injection feedback by using the linewidth compress mechanism of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) are proposed and demonstrated. Since the linewidth of RBS is narrower than that of the incident light in optical fibers and they have the same centre wavelength, the RBS can act as a mechanism to compress the linewidth of the incident light in fiber ring laser. In addition, more RBS signal could be collected to help further compress the laser linewidth besides the free spectral range is expanded when the self-injection fe…
We show that semiconductor Fano lasers strongly suppress dynamic instabilities induced by external optical feedback. A comparison with conventional Fabry-Perot lasers shows orders of magnitude improvement in feedback stability, and in many cases even total suppression of coherence collapse, which is of major importance for applications in integrated photonics. The laser dynamics are analysed using a generalisation of the Lang-Kobayashi model for semiconductor lasers with external feedback, and an analytical expression for the critical feedback level is derived.
An AOQ (acoustic-optic Q-switched) laser with cavityless weak-feedback configuration is demonstrated based on a Nd:GdVO4 bounce geometry. The laser can operate at a repetition up to 500 kHz with the output power above 4W. The pulse-width at 100 kHz reaches 5.2 ns, which is 4.3 times the round-trip time. A theory of Q-switched cavityless weak-feedback laser is proposed for the first time, to our best knowledge. This theory is very suitable for analyzing short pulses comparable to round-trip time. By utilizing the theory, simulation is implemented for our experimental conditions. The consistence…
Chaotic bursts are observed in a single-mode microchip Nd:YVO$_4$ laser with fiber feedback. The physical characteristic of the instability is a random switching between two different dynamical states, i.e., the noise-driven relaxation oscillation and the chaotic spiking oscillation. As the feedback strength varied, transition which features the strong interplay between two states exhibits and the dynamical switching is found to be non-stationary at the transition.
The random laser action with coherent feedback by second-harmonic generation (SHG) was experimentally demonstrated in this paper. Compared with the conventional random laser action based on photoluminescence effect, which needs strong photoresponse in the active medium and has a fixed response waveband due to the inherent energy level structure of the material, this random SHG laser action indicates a possible confinement of the nonlinear signal with ring cavities and widens the response waveband due to the flexible frequency conversion in nonlinear process. The combination of coherent random …
We demonstrate an efficient dynamical amplification of phase conjugation in the gain medium of a diode-pumped Nd3+:YVO4 solid state laser via excitation of its relaxation oscillations. Consequently, enhancement in the modulated amplitude of the phase conjugate wave is observed with up to +30 dB compared to classical homodyne approach.
The wavelength switching dynamics of two-colour semiconductor lasers with optical injection and feedback are presented. These devices incorporate slotted regions etched into the laser ridge waveguide for tailoring the output spectrum. Experimental measurements are presented demonstrating that optical injection in one or both modes of these devices can induce wavelength bistability. Measured switching dynamics with modulated optical injection are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations based on a simple rate equation model. We also demonstrate experimentally that time-dela…
The application of the non conventional imaging technique LOFI (Laser Optical Feedback Imaging) to coherent microscopy is presented. This simple and efficient technique using frequency-shifted optical feedback needs the sample to be scanned in order to obtain an image. The effects on magnitude and phase signals such as vignetting and field curvature occasioned by the scanning with galvanometric mirrors are discussed. A simple monitoring method based on phase images is proposed to find the optimal position of the scanner. Finally, some experimental results illustrating this technique are presen…
A monolithically integrated mode-locked semiconductor laser is proposed. The compound ring cavity is composed of a colliding pulse mode-locking (ML) subcavity and a passive Fabry-Perot feedback subcavity. These two 1.6 mm long subcavities are coupled by using on-chip reflectors at both ends, enabling harmonic mode locking. By changing DC-bias conditions, optical mode spacing from 50 to 450 GHz is experimentally demonstrated. Ultrafast pulses shorter than 0.3 ps emitted from this laser diode are shown in autocorrelation traces.
We discuss the feasibility of a soft-x-ray distributed feedback laser (DFL) pumped by an x-ray free electron laser (X-FEL). The DFL under consideration is a Mg/SiC bi-layered Bragg reflector pumped by a single X-FEL bunch at 57.4 eV, stimulating the Mg L2,3 emission at 49 eV corresponding to the 3s-3d -> 2p1/2,3/2 transition. Based on a model developed by Yariv and Yeh and an extended coupled-wave theory, we show that it would be possible to obtain a threshold gain compatible with the pumping provided by available X-FEL facilities.
In this article, we study the non-linear coupling between the stationary (i.e. the beating modulation signal) and transient (i.e. the laser quantum noise) dynamics of a laser subjected to frequency shifted optical feedback. We show how the noise power spectrum and more specifically the relaxation oscillation frequency of the laser are modified under different optical feedback condition. Specifically we study the influence of (i) the amount of light returning to the laser cavity and (ii) the initial detuning between the frequency shift and intrinsic relaxation frequency. The present work shows …
We study laser generation in 1D distributed feedback lasers with amplifying and lossy layers. We show that when the lasing frequency differs from the transition frequencies of the amplifying medium, loss induced lasing may occur due to the broadening of the resonator mode with increasing loss in the absorbing layers. This broadening leads to a shift in the lasing frequency towards the transition frequency. As a result, the cavity mode interaction with the amplifying medium is enhanced, and the lasing threshold is lowered.
We propose a semi-analytical method of calculating the timing fluctuations in mode-locked semiconductor lasers and apply it to study the effect of delayed coherent optical feedback on pulse timing jitter in these lasers. The proposed method greatly reduces computation times and therefore allows for the investigation of the dependence of timing fluctuations over greater parameter domains. We show that resonant feedback leads to a reduction in the timing jitter and that a frequency-pulling region forms about the main resonances, within which a timing jitter reduction is observed. The width of th…
We have developed terahertz frequency quantum cascade lasers that exploit a double-periodicity distributed feedback grating to control the emission frequency and the output beam direction independently. The spatial refractive index modulation of the gratings necessary to provide optical feedback at a fixed frequency and, simultaneously, a far-field emission pattern centered at controlled angles, was designed through use of an appropriate wavevector scattering model. Single mode THz emission at angles tuned by design between 0° and 50° was realized, leading to an original phase-matching approac…
Long-distance measurements (10 m - 1000 m) with an accuracy of 10-7 is a challenge for many applications. We show that it is achievable with Frequency Shifted Feedback (FSF) laser interferometry technique, provided that the determination of the radio frequency beat order be made without ambiguity and on a time scale compatible with atmospheric applications. Using the pulsed-FSF laser that we developed for laser guide star application, we propose and test, up to 240 m, a simple method for measuring the beat order in real time. The moving-comb and Yatsenko models are also discussed. The first of…
