Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) emerges from intertwined spin and charge degrees of freedom in the form of ferromagnetic clusters also known as trapped magnetic polarons. As a result, CMR is rarely observed in antiferromagnetic materials. Here we use electron spin resonance (ESR) to reveal microscopic evidence for the formation of magnetic polarons in antiferromagnetic Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$. First, we observe a reduction of the Eu$^{2+}$ ESR linewidth as a function of the applied magnetic field consistent with ferromagnetic clusters that are antiferromagnetically coupled. Additionally, the Eu$^{2+}$ lineshape changes markedly below T' ~ 200 K, a temperature scale that coincides with the onset of CMR. The combination of these two effects provide strong evidence that magnetic polarons grow in size below T' and start influencing the macroscopic properties of the system.
Low-temperature transport and magnetization measurements for the antiferromagnets SrMnO(3) and CaMnO(3) identify an impurity band of mobile states separated by energy E from electrons bound in Coulombic potentials. Very weak electric fields are sufficient to excite bound electrons to the impurity band, increasing the mobile carrier concentration by more than three orders of magnitude. The data argue against the formation of self-trapped magnetic polarons (MPs) predicted by theory, and rather imply that bound MPs become stable only for kT<<E.
We study the problem of a magnetic polaron in an antiferromagnetic semiconductor (ferron). We obtain an analytical solution for the distortion produced in the magnetic structure of the d-spins due to the presence of a charge carrier bound to an impurity. The region in which the charge carrier is trapped is of the order of the lattice constant (small ferron) but the distortion of the magnetic structure extends over much larger distance. It is shown that the presence of this distortion makes the ferron more stable, and introduces a new length scale in the problem.
We investigate the interplay between the formation of lattice and magnetic polaron in the case of a single hole in the antiferromagnetic background. We present an exact analytical solution of the Holstein-t-J model in infinite dimensions. Ground state energy, electron-lattice correlation function, spin bag dimension as well as spectral properties are calculated. The magnetic and hole-lattice correlations sustain each other, i.e. the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations favors the formation of the lattice polaron at lower value of the electron-phonon coupling while the polaronic effect co…
The structure of magnetic polarons (ferrons) is studied for an 1D antiferromagnetic chain doped by non-magnetic donor impurities. The conduction electrons are assumed to be bound by the impurities. Such a chain can be described as a set of ferrons at the antiferromagnetic background. We found that two types of ferrons can exist in the system. The ground state of the chain corresponds to the ferrons with the sizes of the order of the localization length of the electron near the impurity. The ferrons of the second type produce a more extended distortion of spins in the chain. They are stable wit…
The thermal behavior of a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chain doped by donor impurities was analyzed. The ground state of such a chain corresponds to the formation of a set of ferromagnetically correlated regions localized near impurities (bound magnetic polarons). At finite temperatures, the magnetic structure of the chain was calculated simultaneously with the wave function of a conduction electron bound by an impurity. The calculations were performed using an approximate variational method and a Monte Carlo simulation. Both these methods give similar results. The analysis of the tempera…
We investigate a rare instance of an exactly solvable nonequilibrium many-body problem. In particular, we derive an exact solution for the nonequilibrium dynamics of an initially localized single hole in a fully anisotropic antiferromagnetic Bethe lattice, described by the $t$-$J_z$ model. The solvability of the model relies on the fractal self-similarity of Bethe lattices, making it possible to compute the full motion of the hole as it moves through the lattice, as well as exactly characterizing the resulting effect on spin-spin correlation functions. We find that the hole remains bound to it…
Understanding the interplay between charge and spin and its effects on transport is a ubiquitous challenge in quantum many-body systems. In the Fermi-Hubbard model, this interplay is thought to give rise to magnetic polarons, whose dynamics may explain emergent properties of quantum materials such as high-temperature superconductivity. In this work, we use a cold-atom quantum simulator to directly observe the formation dynamics and subsequent spreading of individual magnetic polarons. Measuring the density- and spin-resolved evolution of a single hole in a 2D Hubbard insulator with short-range…
Using the Lanczos method in linear chains we study the double exchange model in the low concentration limit, including an antiferromagnetic super-exchange K. In the strong coupling limit we find that the ground state contains ferromagnetic polarons whose length is very sensitive to the value of K/t. We investigate the dispersion relation, the trapping by impurities, and the interaction between these polarons. As the overlap between polarons increases, by decreasing K/t, the effective interaction between them changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. The scaling to the thermodynamic limi…
Within the frameworks of spin-polaron concept and the spherically symmetric state for the antiferromagnetic spin background, the one-particle motion is studied for two-dimensional Kondo-lattice. The elemetary excitations are represented as a Bloch superposition of four one-site electron states: two local states- a bare electron state and a local spin-polaron of small radius, and two states of delocalized polarons which correspond to the coupling of local states to the antiferromagnetic spin wave with momentum Q=(pi,pi), so called Q-polarons. As a remarkable result we show that the lowest band …

We investigate magnetic polarons in two-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems, where conduction electrons interact with antiferromagnetically interacting localized spins. Starting from a basic model, we derive a simplified model with the help of spin Green's function and a perturbation analysis. A strong coupling analysis is applied to the model, where the sum of the scattering wave vectors is approximated to be $(π,π)$ or zero, using the equation of motion for the conduction electron Green's function, and we discuss the pseudogap like behavior associated with the suppression of the…
The structure of bound magnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic matrix is studied in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Kondo-lattice models in the double exchange limit (J_H >> t). The conduction electron is bound by a nonmagnetic donor impurity and forms a ferromagnetic core of the size about the electron localization length (bound magnetic polaron). We find that the magnetic polaron produces rather long-range extended spin distortions of the antiferromagnetic background around the core. In a wide range of distances, these distortions decay as 1/r^2 and 1/r^4 i…
The conventional paradigm of charge order for La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 for x=0.5 has been challenged recently by a Zener polaron picture emerging from experiments and theoretical calculations. The effective low energy Hamiltonian for the magnetic degrees of freedom has been found to be a cubic Heisenberg model, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and frustrating antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions in the planes, and antiferromagnetic interaction between planes. With linear spin wave theory and diagonalization of small clusters up to 27 sites we find that the behavior of the model int…

The deformation of the quantum Neel state induced by a spin polaron is analyzed in a slave fermion approach. Our method is based on the selfconsistent Born approximation for Green's and the wave function for the quasiparticle. The results of various spin-correlation functions relative to the position of the moving hole are discussed and shown to agree with those available from small cluster calculations. Antiferromagnetic correlations in the direct neighborhood of the hole are reduced, but they remain antiferromagnetic even for J as small as 0.1 t. These correlation functions exhibit dipolar d…
We formulate a complete microscopic theory of a coupled pair of bound magnetic polarons, the bound-magnetic-polaron molecule (BMPM) in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) by taking into account both a proper two-body nature of the impurity-electron wave function and within the general spin-rotation-invariant approach to the electronic states. We also take into account both the Heisenberg and the antiferromagnetic kinetic-exchange interactions, as well as the ferromagnetic coupling within the common spin BMPM cloud. The thermodynamic fluctuations of the spin cloud within the polaron effectiv…
The interplay of spin and charge degrees of freedom, introduced by doping mobile holes into a Mott insulator with strong anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlations, is at the heart of strongly correlated matter such as high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Here we capture this interplay in the strong coupling regime and propose a trial wavefunction of mobile holes in an AFM. Our method provides a microscopic justification for a class of theories which describe doped holes moving in an AFM environment as meson-like bound states of spinons and chargons. We discuss a model of such bound states from the per…
We investigate the two- and three-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model by unbiased Monte Carlo simulations. A phase diagram for the two-dimensional model is presented, in which the stability of magnetic order and ferromagnetic polarons is examined with respect to the antiferromagnetic superexchange J' and temperature. The Monte Carlo simulations reveal that J' > 0.02 strengthens individual polarons while small J' < 0.02 favors larger clusters and phase separation except for small doping. Lowering the temperature stabilizes ferromagnetic polarons for realistic J' > 0.01, while phase se…
We report on the microscopic model of the recently synthesized one-dimensional quantum magnet (NO)Cu(NO3)3. Applying density functional theory band structure calculations, we obtain a leading antiferromagnetic exchange coupling J ~ 200 K, which runs via NO3 groups forming spin chains along the b direction. Much weaker couplings J' ~ 2 K link the chains into layers in a non-frustrated manner. Our calculations do not support the earlier conjecture on an anisotropic frustrated square lattice physics in (NO)Cu(NO3)3. In contrast, the model of uniform spin chains leads to a remarkably good fit of t…
The disordered antiferromagnet \pfn (\pfns) is investigated in a wide temperature range by combining Mössbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction experiments. It is demonstrated that the magnetic ground state is a {\it microscopic} coexistence of antiferromagnetic and a spin-glass orders. This speromagnet-like phase features frozen-in short-range fluctuations of the Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments that are transverse to the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic spin component.
We study kinetic magnetism for the Fermi-Hubbard models in triangular type lattices, including a zigzag ladder, four- and six-legged triangular cylinders and a full two-dimensional triangular lattice. We focus on the regime of strong interactions, $U\gg t$ and filling factors around one electron per site. For temperatures well above the hopping strength, the Curie-Weiss form of the magnetic susceptibility suggests effective antiferromagnetic correlations for systems that are hole doped with respect to $ν=1$, and ferromagnetic correlations for systems with electron dopings. We show that these c…
The magnetic strings in antiferromagnetic crystals with the spin $S = 1 /2$ differ from the magnetic polarons (ferrons) by the absence of the additional magnetic moment. We show that in the $S > 1 /2$ double exchange crystals with the antiferromagnetic $s-d$ exchange, a new type of magnetic strings appears, which possesses a magnetic moment. It is concentrated at the center of the string, and the magnetized string is, in its essence, the state intermediate between the string and the ferron. In antiferromagnetic manganites, this moment is by an order of magnitude larger than that of a magnetic …
The formation and local symmetry of spin-lattice polaron has been investigated semiclassically in the planar Holstein t-J-like models within the exact diagonalization method. Due to the interplay of strong correlations and electron-lattice interaction, the doped hole may either move freely or lead to the localized spin-lattice distortion and form a Holstein polaron. The formation of polaron breaks the translational symmetry by suppression of antiferromagnetic correlations and inducement of ferromagnetic correlations locally. Moreover, the breaking of local rotational symmetry around the polaro…
A combination of spectroscopic probes was used to develop a detailed experimental description of the transport and magnetic properties of superlattices composed of the paramagnetic metal CaRuO$_3$ and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO$_3$. The charge carrier density and Ru valence state in the superlattices are not significantly different from those of bulk CaRuO$_3$. The small charge transfer across the interface implied by these observations confirms predictions derived from density functional calculations. However, a ferromagnetic polarization due to canted Mn spins penetrates 3-4 unit …
We study an effective one-dimensional (1D) orbital t-J model derived for strongly correlated e_g electrons in doped manganites. The ferromagnetic spin order at half filling is supported by orbital superexchange prop. to J which stabilizes orbital order with alternating x^2-y^2 and 3z^2-r^2 orbitals. In a doped system it competes with the kinetic energy prop. to t. When a single hole is doped to a half-filled chain, its motion is hindered and a localized orbital polaron is formed. An increasing doping generates either separated polarons or phase separation into hole-rich and hole-poor regions, …
Self-localization of holes in the Holstein t-J model is studied in the adiabatic limit using exact diagonalization and the retraceable path approximation. It is shown that the critical electron-phonon coupling λ_c decreases with increasing J and that this behavior is determined mainly by the incoherent rather than by the coherent motion of the hole. The obtained spin correlation functions in the localized region can be understood within a percolation picture where antiferromagnetic order can persist up to a substantial hole doping. These results restrict the possibility of self-localization of…
The non-local nature of the polaron formation in t-t'-t"-J model is studied in large lattices up to 64 sites by developing a new numerical method. We show that the effect of longer-range hoppings t' and t" is a large anisotropy of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) leading to a completely different influence of EPI on the nodal and antinodal points in agreement with the experiments. Furthermore, nonlocal EPI preserves polaron's quantum motion, which destroys the antiferromagnetic order effectively, even at strong coupling regime, although the quasi-particle weight in angle-resolved-photoemi…
Recent angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data, which found evidence for a d-wave-like modulation of the antiferromagnetic gap, suggest an intimate interrelation between the antiferromagnetic insulator and the superconductor with its d-wave gap. This poses a new challenge to microscopic descriptions, which should account for this correlation between, at first sight, very different states of matter. Here, we propose a microscopic mechanism which provides a definite correlation between these two different gap structures: it is shown that a projected SO(5) theory, which aims at unifying antifer…
The properties of mobile impurities in quantum magnets are fundamental for our understanding of strongly correlated materials and may play a key role in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity. Hereby, the motion of hole-like defects through an antiferromagnet has been of particular importance. It creates magnetic frustrations that lead to the formation of a quasiparticle, whose complex structure continues to pose substantial challenges to theory and numerical simulations. In this article, we develop a non-perturbative theoretical approach to describe the microscopic properties of su…
We derive an S=1 spin polaron model which describes the motion of a single hole introduced into the S=1 spin antiferromagnetic ground state of Ca2RuO4. We solve the model using the self-consistent Born approximation and show that its hole spectral function qualitatively agrees with the experimentally observed high-binding energy part of the Ca2RuO4 photoemission spectrum. We explain the observed peculiarities of the photoemission spectrum by linking them to two anisotropies present in the employed model---the spin anisotropy and the hopping anisotropy. We verify that these anisotropies, and no…
Understanding the coexistence of ferromagnetism and insulating behavior in manganites is an unsolved problem. We propose a localized-band model involving effective intermediate-range electron-electron (electron-hole) repulsion (attraction) generated by cooperative electron-phonon interaction. Double exchange mechanism, involving holes virtually hopping to nearest neighbors and back, produces magnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic environment; when these magnetic polarons coalesce and percolate the system, we get a ferromagnetic insulator. Ferromagnetism gets more pronounced when the holes (…
We consider the motion of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions. For antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and the fermions, the low temperature behavior of the system is governed by the two-channel Kondo effect, leading to the impurity becoming completely opaque to the spin excitations of the gas. As well as the known spectral signatures of the two-channel Kondo effect, we find that the low temperature mobility of the resulting `Kondo polaron' takes the universal form $μ\to \frac{3\hbar v_F^2}{2πk_B^2T^2}$, in sharp contrast to the spinless case where …
Uranium dipnictide USb$_2$ reflects enigmatic properties posing a substantial challenge for a microscopic modeling. Among others, it develops a nonstandard antiferromagnetic order of a $\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow\uparrow$-type along [001] crystallographic direction, and under pressure it undergoes transition to the ferromagnetic phase. Here we propose a minimal low-energy model of USb$_2$ which, as we demonstrate at the mean-field level, accommodates physical mechanism for mentioned observations. Relying on the obtained results we also comment on the features of magnetism observed in other U…
We investigate the evolution of a photoexcitation in correlated materials over a wide range of time scales. The system studied is a one-dimensional model of a manganite with correlated electron, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom, which we relate to the three-dimensional material Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$. The ground-state phases for the entire composition range are determined and rationalized by a coarse-grained polaron model. At half-doping a pattern of antiferromagnetically coupled Zener polarons is realized. Using time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG), we t…
The motion of a single hole in an arbitrary magnetic background is investigated for the 2D t-J model. The wavefunction of the hole is described within a generalized string picture which leads to a modified concept of spin polarons. We calculate the one-hole spectral function using a large string basis for the limits of a Neel ordered and a completely disordered background. In addition we use a simple approximation to interpolate between these cases. For the antiferromagnetic background we reproduce the well-known quasiparticle band. In the disordered case the shape of the spectral function is …
I give a brief overview of a polaron formation in three distinct transition metal oxides: (i) spin polaron when a hole is added to the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered plane in La$_2$CuO$_4$, (ii) orbital polaron when a hole is added to the alternating orbital (AO) ordered plane in LaMnO$_3$, and (iii) spin-orbital polaron when a hole is added to the AF and AO ordered plane in LaVO$_3$. Comparison of the distinct features of the above polarons can shed some light on the basic differences between the experimental phase diagrams of the lightly doped transition metal oxides La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$,…
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for spin polarons forming in weakly doped antiferromagnets and demonstrate that the system becomes superconducting at finite doping. We argue that the driving mechanism which gives rise to superconductivity is lowering of the kinetic energy by formation of mobile antiferromagnetic spin bipolarons. That source of attraction between holes is by definition effective if the antiferromagnetic correlation length is longer than the radius of forming polarons. Notwithstanding that the attraction is strongest in the undoped system with long range order, the supercondu…
For a mobile spin-1/2 impurity, coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional gas of fermions, perturbative ideas have been used to argue in favor of two-channel Kondo behavior of the impurity spin. Here we combine general considerations and extensive numerical simulations to show that the problem displays a novel quantum phase transition between two-channel and one-channel Kondo screening upon increasing the Kondo coupling. We construct a ground-state phase diagram and discuss the various non-trivial crossovers as well as possible experimental realizations.
We develop a nonperturbative theory for hole dynamics in antiferromagnetic spin lattices, as described by the $t$-$J$ model. This is achieved by generalizing the selfconsistent Born approximation to nonequilibrium systems, making it possible to calculate the full time-dependent many-body wave function. Our approach reveals three distinct dynamical regimes, ultimately leading to the formation of magnetic polarons. Following the initial ballistic stage of the hole dynamics, coherent formation of string excitations gives rise to characteristic oscillations in the hole density. Their damping event…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 036401 (2011)), Lau, et al. investigated the single hole problem in an effective model containing Cu $d$ and O $2p$ orbitals by exact diagonalization on clusters composed of 32 CuO$_2$ unit cells. With full quantum fluctuations due to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) backgroud, they found that spin-polaron solutions with spin 3/2 become lowest energy solutions in certain region of Brillouin zone (BZ), which they claimed no similiar solutions were obtained in other models or approximations before. In this Comment, we would like to point out that such high-sp…
Magnetoresistance (MR) has attracted tremendous attention for possible technological applications. Understanding the role of magnetism in manipulating MR may in turn steer the searching for new applicable MR materials. Here we show that antiferromagnetic (AFM) GdSi metal displays an anisotropic positive MR value (PMRV), up to $\sim$ 415%, accompanied by a large negative thermal volume expansion (NTVE). Around $T_\text{N}$ the PMRV translates to negative, down to $\sim$ -10.5%. Their theory-breaking magnetic-field dependencies [PMRV: dominantly linear; negative MR value (NMRV): quadratic] and t…
Present work demonstrates the formation of spin-orbital polarons in electron doped copper oxides, that arise due to doping-induced polarisation of the oxygen orbitals in the CuO$_2$ planes. The concept of such polarons is fundamentally different from previous interpretations. The novel aspect of spin-orbit polarons is best described by electrons becoming self-trapped in one-dimensional channels created by polarisation of the oxygen orbitals. The one-dimensional channels form elongated filaments with two possible orientations, along the diagonals of the elementary CuO$_2$ square plaquette. As t…
We study the spectral function of a single hole doped into the (a,b) plane of the Mott insulator LaVO$_3$, with antiferromagnetic (AF) spin order of S=1 spins accompanied by alternating orbital (AO) order of active $\{d_{yz},d_{zx}\}$ orbitals. Starting from the respective t-J model, with spin-orbital superexchange and effective three-site hopping terms, we derive the polaron Hamiltonian and show that a hole couples simultaneously to the collective excitations of the AF/AO phase, magnons and orbitons. Next, we solve this polaron problem using the self-consistent Born approximation and find a s…
Emergent quasiparticles that arise from the fractionalization of the microscopic degrees of freedom have been one of the central themes in modern condensed matter physics. The notion of magnetic monopoles, freely moving quasiparticles fragmented from local dipole excitations, has enjoyed much success in understanding the thermodynamic, static, and transport properties of the so-called spin-ice materials. The artificial version of spin ice, where a lattice of nanoscale magnetic dipoles is sculpted out of a ferromagnetic film, provides a unique opportunity to study these unusual quasiparticles i…
In the framework of the generalized tight binding method we have calculated the quasiparticle band structure and the spectral functions of the undoped cuprates like $La_2 CuO_4$, $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$ etc. Due to spin fluctuations the in-gap state appears above the top of the valence band in the undoped antiferromagnetic insulator similar to in-gap states induced by hole doping. In the ARPES experiments the in-gap states can be detected as weak low energy satellites.
We study the possibility of nanoscale phase separation in manganites in the framework of the double exchange model. The homogeneous canted state of this model is proved to be unstable toward the formation of small ferromagnetic droplets inside an antiferromagnetic insulating matrix. For the ferromagnetic polaronic state we analyze the quantum effects related to the tails of electronic wave function and a possibility of electron hopping in the antiferromagnetic background. We find that these effects lead to the formation of the threshold for the polaronic state.
The influence of antiferromagnetic order on the superconductivity in the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound CePt$_3$Si and related materials is discussed. Based on our RPA analysis for the extended Hubbard model two phases could be stabilized by a spin fluctuation induced pairing, with either dominantly p-wave or d-wave symmetry. The antiferromagnetic order plays an essential role for the low-energy physics, in particular, for the appearance of line nodes in the gap and the enhancement of spin susceptibility below $T_{\rm c}$. Various properties and possible phase diagrams under pressu…
