We report the discovery of 74 new pulsating DA white dwarf stars, or ZZ Cetis, from the data obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, from Sectors 1 to 39, corresponding to the first 3 cycles. This includes objects from the Southern Hemisphere (Sectors 1-13 and 27-39) and the Northern Hemisphere (Sectors 14-26), observed with 120 s- and 20 s-cadence. Our sample likely includes 13 low-mass and one extremely low-mass white dwarf candidate, considering the mass determinations from fitting Gaia magnitudes and parallax. In addition, we present follow-up time series photometry from ground-based telescopes for 11 objects, which allowed us to detect a larger number of periods. For each object, we analysed the period spectra and performed an asteroseismological analysis, and we estimate the structure parameters of the sample, i.e., stellar mass, effective temperature and hydrogen envelope mass. We estimate a mean asteroseismological mass of <Msis>_~ 0.635 +/-0.015 Msun, excluding the candidate low or extremely-low mass objects. This value is in agreement with the mean mass using estimates from Gaia data, which is <Mphot> ~ 0.631 +/- 0.040 Msun, and with the mean mass of previously known ZZ Cetis of <M*>= 0.644 +/-0.034 Msun. Our sample of 74 new bright ZZ~Cetis increases the number of known ZZ~Cetis by $\sim$20 per cent.
Context. We present our findings on 18 formerly known ZZ Ceti stars observed by the TESS space telescope in 120s cadence mode during the survey observation of the southern ecliptic hemisphere. Aims. We focus on the frequency analysis of the space-based observations, comparing the results with the findings of the previous ground-based measurements. The frequencies detected by the TESS observations can serve as inputs for future asteroseismic analyses. Methods. We performed standard pre-whitening of the data sets to derive the possible pulsation frequencies of the different targets. In some case…
We present our results on the continuation of our survey searching for new ZZ Ceti stars, inspired by the recently launched TESS space mission. The seven targets were bright DA-type white dwarfs located close to the empirical ZZ Ceti instability strip. We successfully identified one new pulsator candidate, namely PM J22299+3024, derived detection limits for possible pulsations of four objects for the first time, and determined new detection limits for two targets.
B, V, i, and z bandpass observations were collected in late 2020 for three RRab type stars: UU Ceti, UW Gruis, and W Tucanae. The period-luminosity (PL) relationships of Catalen et al. (2004) and Caceres \& Catelan (2008) were applied to derive distances. These were found to be in reasonable agreement with the Gaia Early DR3 distances, lending confidence to use of the PL relationships. Fourier decompositions were applied to data from the TESS space telescope to derive, using stepwise linear regression, an empirical relationship between terms of the decomposition and the pulsation period with m…
We present the photometric data from TESS for two known ZZ Ceti stars, PG 1541+651 and BPM 31594. Before TESS, both objects only had observations from short runs from ground-based facilities, with three and one period detected, respectively. The TESS data allowed the detection of multiple periodicities, 12 for PG 1541$+$651, and six for BPM 31594, which enables us to perform a detailed asteroseismological study. For both objects we found a representative asteroseismic model with canonical stellar mass ~ 0.61 Msun and thick hydrogen envelopes, thicker than 10^(-5.3) M_*. The detection of triple…
Context. We continued our ground-based observing project with the season-long observations of ZZ Ceti stars at Konkoly Observatory. Our present targets are the newly discovered PM J22299+3024, and the already known LP 119-10 variables. LP 119-10 was also observed by the TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) space telescope in 120-second cadence mode. Methods. We performed standard Fourier analysis of the daily, weekly, and the whole data sets, together with test data of different combinations of weekly observations. We then performed asteroseismic fits utilising the observed and the cal…
ZZ Ceti stars form the most numerous group of degenerate variable stars. They are otherwise normal DA (H-rich atmospheres) white dwarfs that exhibit pulsations. Here, we present an asteroseismological analysis for 44 bright ZZ Ceti stars based on a new set of fully evolutionary DA white dwarf models characterized by detailed chemical profiles from the centre to the surface. One of our targets is the archetypal ZZ Ceti star G117$-$B15A, for which we obtain an asteroseismological model with an effective temperature and a surface gravity in excellent agreement with the spectroscopy. The asterosei…
We present the results of our survey searching for new white dwarf pulsators for observations by the TESS space telescope. We collected photometric time-series data on 14 white dwarf variable-candidates at Konkoly Observatory, and found two new bright ZZ Ceti stars, namely EGGR 120 and WD 1310+583. We performed the Fourier-analysis of the datasets. In the case of EGGR 120, which was observed on one night only, we found one significant frequency at 1332 microHz with 2.3 mmag amplitude. We successfully observed WD 1310+583 on eight nights, and determined 17 significant frequencies by the whole d…
Context. Thanks to photometric space missions, we have access to more and more information on the properties of white dwarf stars, especially pulsating ones. In the case of pulsators, we have the opportunity to get an insight into their otherwise hidden interiors by the means of asteroseismology. In addition to space-based observations, we also take advantage of the opportunity to study the pulsations of white dwarf stars from the ground, either as observations that are complementary to space-based measurements or individual observing runs on selected targets across long timescales. Aims. We a…
In the spectra of pulsating stars, especially Mira stars, the detection of intense hydrogen emission lines has been explained by a radiative shock wave, periodically propagating throughout the atmosphere. Previous observation of the Mira star omicron Ceti around a bright maximum of light led to the detection of a strong linear polarization associated to Balmer emissions, although the origin of this phenomenon is not fully explained yet. With the help of spectropolarimetry, we propose to investigate the nature of shock waves propagating throughout the stellar atmosphere and present, for omicron…

During the last two years we have received long time-series photometric observations of bright (V mag < 8) main-sequence A- and B-type stars observed by the NASA TESS spacecraft and the Austria-Poland-Canada BRITE satellites. Using TESS observations of metallic-line A (Am) stars having peculiar element abundances, our goal is to determine whether and why these stars pulsate in multiple radial and non-radial modes, as do the delta Scuti stars in the same region of the H-R diagram. The BRITE data were requested to investigate pulsations in bright (V around 6 mag) A- and B-type stars in the Cygnu…
Metallic-line A (Am) stars are main-sequence stars of around twice the mass of the Sun that show element abundance peculiarities in their spectra. The radiative levitation and diffusive settling processes responsible for these abundance anomalies should also deplete helium from the region of the envelope that drives delta Scuti pulsations. Therefore, these stars are not expected to be delta Scuti stars, which pulsate in multiple radial and nonradial modes with periods of around 2 hours. As part of the NASA TESS Guest Investigator Program, we proposed photometric observations in 2-minute cadenc…
We present HD-TESS, a catalog of 1,709 bright ($V\sim3-10$) red giants from the Henry Draper (HD) Catalog with asteroseismic measurements based on photometry from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Using light curves spanning at least six months across a single TESS observing cycle, we provide measurements of global asteroseismic parameters ($ν_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $Δν$) and evolutionary state for each star in the catalog. We adopt literature values of atmospheric stellar parameters to estimate the masses and radii of the giants in our catalog using asteroseismic scaling relat…
The upcoming NASA TESS mission will perform an all-sky survey for planets transiting bright nearby stars. In addition, its excellent photometric precision will enable asteroseismology of solar-type and red-giant stars. We apply a newly developed detection test along a sequence of stellar evolutionary tracks in order to predict the detectability of solar-like oscillations with TESS.

We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star LkCa 4 within the SPIRou Legacy Survey large programme, based on data collected with SPIRou at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the TESS space probe between October 2021 and January 2022. We applied Zeeman-Doppler Imaging to our spectropolarimetric and photometric data to recover a surface brightness distribution compatible with TESS photometry, as well as the large-scale magnetic topology of the star. As expected from the difference in wavelength between near-infrared and optical data, th…
Using ASAS-SN data, we find that the bright ($V{\sim}13.5$ mag) variable star MACHO 80.7443.1718 (ASASSN-V J052624.38-684705.6) is the most extreme heartbeat star yet discovered. This massive binary, consisting of at least one early B-type star, has an orbital period of $P_{\rm ASAS-SN}=32.83627\pm0.00846\,{\rm d},$ and is located towards the LH58 OB complex in the LMC. Both the ASAS-SN and TESS light curves show extreme brightness variations of ${\sim}40\%$ at periastron and variations of ${\sim}10\%$ due to tidally excited oscillations outside periastron. We fit an analytical model of the va…
We present analysis of time-variable, shifted absorption features in far-UV spectra of the unusual 49 Ceti debris disk. This nearly edge-on disk is one of the brightest known, and is one of the very few containing detectable amounts of circumstellar gas as well as dust. In our two visits of Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectra, variable absorption features are seen on the wings of lines arising from C II and C IV, but not for any of the other circumstellar absorption lines. Similar variable features have long been seen in spectra of the well-studied $β$ Pictoris debris disk and attributed to th…
Using two years of data from the TESS space telescope, we have investigated the time series of 633 overtone pulsating field RR Lyrae (RRc) stars. The majority of stars (82.8 per cent) contain additional frequencies beyond the main pulsation. In addition to the frequencies previously explained by the $\ell = 8$ and $\ell = 9$ non-radial modes, we have identified a group of stars where the additional frequencies may belong to the $\ell = 10$ non-radial modes. We found that stars with no additional frequencies are more common among stars with shorter periods, while stars with longer periods almos…

PV Tel variables are extreme helium (EHe) stars known to be intrinsic light and velocity variable on characteristic timescales 0.1 - 2 d. With two exceptions, they are best described as irregular. Light curves have invariably been obtained from single-site terrestrial observatories. We present TESS observations of two bright EHe stars, Popper's star (V821 Cen) and Thackeray's star (PV Tel). PV Tel is variable on timescales previously reported. V821 Cen is proven to be variable for the first time. Neither light curve shows any evidence of underlying regularity. Implications are considered.
The study of pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries holds the promise of combining two different ways of measuring the physical properties of a star to obtain improved constraints on stellar theory. Gravity (g) mode pulsations such as those found in $γ$ Doradus stars can be used to probe rotational profiles, mixing and magnetic fields. Until recently few $γ$ Doradus stars in eclipsing binaries were known. We have discovered g-mode pulsations in four detached eclipsing binary systems from light curves obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and present an analysis of their e…
Ultra-massive hydrogen-rich (DA spectral type) white dwarf (WD) stars ($M_{\star} > 1M_{\odot}$) coming from single-star evolution are expected to harbor cores made of $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne, resulting from semi-degenerate carbon burning when the progenitor star evolves through the super asymptotic giant branch (S-AGB) phase. These stars are expected to be crystallized by the time they reach the ZZ Ceti instability strip ($T_{\rm eff} \sim 12\,500$ K). Theoretical models predict that crystallization leads to a separation of $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne in the core of ultra-massive WDs, which impacts…
gamma-Cas stars constitute a subgroup of Be stars showing unusually hard and bright X-ray emission. In search for additional peculiarities, we analyzed the TESS lightcurves of 15 gamma-Cas analogs. Their periodograms display broad frequency groups and/or narrow isolated peaks, often superimposed over red noise. The detected signals appear at low frequencies, with few cases of significant signals beyond 5/d (and all of them are faint). The signal amplitudes, and sometimes the frequency content, change with time, even in the absence of outburst events. On the basis of their optical photometric v…

The upcoming NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will obtain space-based uninterrupted light curves for a large sample of bright white dwarfs distributed across the entire sky, providing a very rich resource for asteroseismological studies and the search for transits from planetary debris. We have compiled an all-sky catalogue of ultraviolet, optical, and infrared photometry as well as proper motions, which we propose as an essential tool for the preliminary identification and characterisation of potential targets. We present data for 1864 known white dwarfs and 305 high-probabil…
We announce the discovery of pulsations in HD 23642, the only bright eclipsing system in the Pleiades, based on light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We measure 46 pulsation frequencies and attribute them to delta Scuti pulsations in the secondary component. We find four l=1 doublets, three of which have frequency splittings consistent with the rotation rate of the star. The dipole mode amplitude ratios are consistent with a high stellar inclination angle and the stellar rotation period agrees with the orbital period. Together, these suggest that the spin axis of …
IW And stars are a recently recognized subgroup of dwarf novae which are characterized by (often repetitive) slowly rising standstills terminated by brightening, but the exact mechanism for this variation is not yet identified. We have identified BO Cet, which had been considered as a novalike cataclysmic variable, as a new member of IW And stars based on the behavior in 2019-2020. In addition to this, the object showed dwarf nova-type outbursts in 2020-2021, and superhumps having a period 7.8% longer than the orbital one developed at least during one long outburst. This object has been confir…
We report the identification and follow-up of the transient SRG 062340.2-265715 detected with both instruments on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission. Optical spectroscopy of the G=12.5 counterpart firmly classifies the object as a novalike cataclysmic variable (CV) at a distance of 495 pc. A highly significant TESS period of 3.941 hours, tentatively identified with the orbital period of the binary, could not be found when the object was reobserved with TESS two years later. The newer high-cadence TESS data revealed quasi-periodic oscillations around 25 min, while ground-based photometry…
The Kepler spacecraft provided the first long-baseline, high-precision photometry for large numbers of stars. This enabled the discovery of thousands of new exoplanets, and the characterization of myriad astrophysical phenomena. However, one of the challenges with interpreting Kepler data has been that no instrument has provided a comparison dataset. Therefore, the replication of Kepler time-series data has remained elusive. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) launched in April 2018 and began science operations in July 2018. During the TESS primary mission, it will survey 85% of t…
$γ$ Doradus is the prototype star for the eponymous class of pulsating stars that consists of late A-early F main-sequence stars oscillating in low-frequency gravito-inertial modes. Being among the brightest stars of its kind (V = 4.2), $γ$ Dor benefits from a large set of observational data that has been recently completed by high-quality space photometry from the TESS mission. With these new data, we propose to study $γ$ Dor as an example of possibilities offered by synergies between multi-technical ground and space-based observations. Here, we present the preliminary results of our investig…
Luminaries in the Sky: The TESS Legacy Sample of Bright Stars. I. Asteroseismic detections in naked-eye main-sequence and sub-giant solar-like oscillators
Accurate masses and radii for normal stars derived from observations of detached eclipsing binary stars are of fundamental importance for testing stellar models and may be useful for calibrating free parameters in these model if the masses and radii are sufficiently precise and accurate. We aim to measure precise masses and radii for the stars in the bright eclipsing binary AI Phe, and to quantify the level of systematic error in these estimates. We use several different methods to model the TESS light curve of AI Phe combined with spectroscopic orbits from multiple sources to estimate precise…

We present the detection and analysis of the phase curve of KELT-1b at optical wavelengths, analyzing data taken by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). With a mass of ~27 M_J, KELT-1b is a low-mass brown dwarf. Due to the high mass and close proximity of its companion, the host star has a TESS light curve which shows clear ellipsoidal variations. We model the data with a six-component model: secondary eclipse, phase curve accounting for reflected light and thermal emission, Doppler beaming, ellipsoidal variations, stellar activity and the primary transit. We determine the seconda…
We present the target list of solar-type stars to be observed in short-cadence (2-min) for asteroseismology by the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during its 2-year nominal survey mission. The solar-like Asteroseismic Target List (ATL) is comprised of bright, cool main-sequence and subgiant stars and forms part of the larger target list of the TESS Asteroseismic Science Consortium (TASC). The ATL uses Gaia DR2 and the Extended Hipparcos Compilation (XHIP) to derive fundamental stellar properties, calculate detection probabilities and produce a rank-ordered target list. We pro…
Accurate atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of stars play a vital role in characterizing physical parameters of exoplanetary systems and understanding of their formation. A full asteroseismic characterization of a star is also possible if its main atmospheric parameters are known. The NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) space telescope will play a very important role in searching of exoplanets around bright stars and stellar asteroseismic variability research. We have observed all 302 bright (V < 8 mag) and cooler than F5 spectral class stars in the northern TESS con…
In this contribution, we present the MOBSTER Collaboration, a large community effort to leverage high-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) in order to characterize the variability of magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars. These data can be used to probe the varying column density of magnetospheric plasma along the line of sight for OB stars, thus improving our understanding of the interaction between surface magnetic fields and massive star winds. They can also be used to map out the brightness inhomogeneities present on the surfaces of Ap/…
We present a systematic phase curve analysis of known transiting systems observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during year one of the primary mission. Using theoretical predictions for the amplitude of the planetary longitudinal atmospheric brightness modulation, stellar ellipsoidal distortion and Doppler boosting, as well as brightness considerations to select targets with likely detectable signals, we applied a uniform data processing and light-curve modeling framework to fit the full-orbit phase curves of 22 transiting systems with planet-mass or brown dwarf companion…
BG Ind is a well studied, bright, nearby binary consisting of a pair of F stars in a 1.46-day orbit. We have discovered in the TESS lightcurve for TIC 229804573 (aka BG Ind) a second eclipsing binary in the system with a 0.53-day. Our subsequent analyses of the recent TESS and archival ground-based photometric and radial velocity data, reveal that the two binaries are gravitationally bound in a 721-day period, moderately eccentric orbit. We present the results of a joint spectro-photodynamical analysis of the eclipse timing variation curves of both binaries based on TESS and ground-based archi…
We present the first results from a study of TESS Sector 1 and 2 light curves for eight evolved massive stars in the LMC: six yellow supergiants (YSGs) and two luminous blue variables (LBVs), including S Doradus. We use an iterative prewhitening procedure to characterize the short-timescale variability in all eight stars. The periodogram of one of the YSGs, HD 269953, displays multiple strong peaks at higher frequencies than its fellows. While the field surrounding HD 269953 is quite crowded, it is the brightest star in the region, and has infrared colors indicating it is dusty. We suggest HD …
We report the detection of a transiting super-Earth-sized planet (R=1.39+-0.09 Rearth) in a 1.4-day orbit around L 168-9 (TOI-134),a bright M1V dwarf (V=11, K=7.1) located at 25.15+-0.02 pc. The host star was observed in the first sector of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission and, for confirmation and planet mass measurement, was followed up with ground-based photometry, seeing-limited and high-resolution imaging, and precise radial velocity (PRV) observations using the HARPS and PFS spectrographs. Combining the TESS data and PRV observations, we find the mass of L168-9 b …
The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) provides long baseline (${\sim}4$ yrs) light curves for sources brighter than V$\lesssim17$ mag across the whole sky. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has started to produce high-quality light curves with a baseline of at least 27 days, eventually for most of the sky. The combination of ASAS-SN and TESS light curves probes both long and short term variability in great detail, especially towards the TESS continuous viewing zones (CVZ) at the ecliptic poles. We have produced ${\sim}1.3$ million V-band light curves covering a t…
In this paper, we present the results from spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi in the framework of the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) collaborations during the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observation period. We detected 145 white-light flares from the TESS light curve and 4 H$α$ flares from the OISTER observations performed between 2019-01-16 and 2019-01-18. Among them, 3 H$α$ flares were associated with white-light flares. However, one of them did not show clear brightening in continuum; du…
