$γ$ Doradus is the prototype star for the eponymous class of pulsating stars that consists of late A-early F main-sequence stars oscillating in low-frequency gravito-inertial modes. Being among the brightest stars of its kind (V = 4.2), $γ$ Dor benefits from a large set of observational data that has been recently completed by high-quality space photometry from the TESS mission. With these new data, we propose to study $γ$ Dor as an example of possibilities offered by synergies between multi-technical ground and space-based observations. Here, we present the preliminary results of our investigations.
The long-term, high precision photometry delivered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) enables us to gain new insight into known and hitherto well-studied stars. In this paper, we present the result of our TESS study of the photospheric activity of the rapid rotator AB Doradus. Due to its favorable position near the southern ecliptic pole, the TESS satellite recorded almost 600 rotations of AB Doradus with high cadence, allowing us to study starspots and flares on this ultra-active star. The observed peak-to-peak variation of the rotational modulations reaches almost 11 %, and …
We present simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the ultra-active star AB~Doradus obtained in the X-ray range with the eROSITA instrument on board the Russian--German Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG), and in the optical range obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Thanks to its fortuitous location in the vicinity of the southern ecliptic pole, AB~Dor was observed by these missions simultaneously for almost 20 days. With the hitherto obtained data we study the long-term evolution of the X-ray flux from AB~Dor and the relation between this observable and the …
We present the first asteroseismic results for $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus stars observed in Sectors 1 and 2 of the TESS mission. We utilise the 2-min cadence TESS data for a sample of 117 stars to classify their behaviour regarding variability and place them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram using Gaia DR2 data. Included within our sample are the eponymous members of two pulsator classes, $γ$ Doradus and SX Phoenicis. Our sample of pulsating intermediate-mass stars observed by TESS also allows us to confront theoretical models of pulsation driving in the classical instability strip for the fir…
Context. Gamma Doradus (hereafter $γ$~Dor) stars are gravity-mode pulsators whose periods carry information about the internal structure of the star. These periods are especially sensitive to the internal rotation and chemical mixing, two processes that are currently not well constrained in the theory of stellar evolution. Aims. We aim to identify the pulsation modes and deduce the internal rotation and buoyancy travel time for 106 $γ$ Dor stars observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission in its southern continuous viewing zone (hereafter S-CVZ). We rely on 140 previou…
The TESS space mission provides us with high-precision photometric observations of bright stars over more than 70% of the entire sky, allowing us to revisit and characterise well-known stars. We aim to conduct an asteroseismic analysis of the gamma Doradus star HD112429 using both the available ground-based spectroscopy and TESS photometry, and assess the conditions required to measure the near-core rotation rate and buoyancy travel time. We collect and reduce the available five sectors of short-cadence TESS photometry of this star, as well as 672 legacy observations from six medium- to high-r…
The study of pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries holds the promise of combining two different ways of measuring the physical properties of a star to obtain improved constraints on stellar theory. Gravity (g) mode pulsations such as those found in $γ$ Doradus stars can be used to probe rotational profiles, mixing and magnetic fields. Until recently few $γ$ Doradus stars in eclipsing binaries were known. We have discovered g-mode pulsations in four detached eclipsing binary systems from light curves obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and present an analysis of their e…
We present an overview of eclipsing systems of the HW-Virginis type, based on space observations from the TESS Mission. We perform a detailed analysis of the properties of AA Dor, which was monitored for almost a full year. This excellent time-series dataset permitted us to search for both stellar pulsations and eclipse timing variations. In addition, we used the high-precision trigonometric parallax from Gaia Early Data Release 3 to make an independent determination of the fundamental stellar parameters. No convincing pulsations were detected down to a limit of 76 parts per million, however w…
Unveiling $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus Hybrid Pulsation of HD 53166 and HD 53349 Plus Rich Frequencies in HD 52788 -- Catalogs of 70552 $δ$ Sct and 8080 $γ$ Dor
We present the first results from a study of TESS Sector 1 and 2 light curves for eight evolved massive stars in the LMC: six yellow supergiants (YSGs) and two luminous blue variables (LBVs), including S Doradus. We use an iterative prewhitening procedure to characterize the short-timescale variability in all eight stars. The periodogram of one of the YSGs, HD 269953, displays multiple strong peaks at higher frequencies than its fellows. While the field surrounding HD 269953 is quite crowded, it is the brightest star in the region, and has infrared colors indicating it is dusty. We suggest HD …
The prototype star for the γ Doradus class of pulsating variables was studied em- ploying photometric and spectroscopic observations to determine the frequencies and modes of pulsation. The four frequencies found were self-consistent between the obser- vation types and almost identical to those found in previous studies (1.3641 d-1 ,1.8783 d-1 , 1.4742 d-1 and 1.3209 d-1). Three of the frequencies are classified as l, m = (1, 1) pulsations and the other is ambiguous between l = 2 modes. Two frequencies are shown to be stable over twenty years since their first identification. The agreement in …
Metallic-line A (Am) stars are main-sequence stars of around twice the mass of the Sun that show element abundance peculiarities in their spectra. The radiative levitation and diffusive settling processes responsible for these abundance anomalies should also deplete helium from the region of the envelope that drives delta Scuti pulsations. Therefore, these stars are not expected to be delta Scuti stars, which pulsate in multiple radial and nonradial modes with periods of around 2 hours. As part of the NASA TESS Guest Investigator Program, we proposed photometric observations in 2-minute cadenc…
Based on 2-minute cadence TESS data from sectors 1-50, we report the results of the systematic extraction of $δ$ Scuti-type pulsations in the 6431 eclipsing binaries with orbital periods shorter than 13 days. A total number of 242 pulsators were found in those systems, including 143 new discoveries. We examined their pulsation properties based on the H-R diagram and the relationships between the dominant pulsation period $P_{\rm dom}$, orbital period $P_{\rm orb}$, and effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. As a consequence, 216 targets are likely $δ$ Scuti stars (123 new), 11 likely $γ$ Doradus…
RR Lyn is a detached eclipsing binary with a 9.95 d orbit containing two A-stars: one metallic-lined and one possibly metal-poor. We use the light curve from the TESS satellite and two sets of published radial velocity measurements to determine the properties of the system to high precision. We find masses of 1.939 +/- 0.007 and 1.510 +/- 0.003 Msun, and radii of 2.564 +/- 0.019 and 1.613 +/- 0.013 Rsun. After adjusting published effective temperatures upwards by 200 K we find a good agreement with theoretical models for a solar chemical composition and an age of 1 Gyr, and a distance slightly…
51 Eri is well known for hosting a directly-imaged giant planet and for its membership to the $β$ Pictoris moving group. Using two-minute cadence photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), we detect multi-periodic variability in 51 Eri that is consistent with pulsations of Gamma Doradus ($γ$ Dor) stars. We identify the most significant pulsation modes (with frequencies between $\sim$0.5-3.9 cycles/day and amplitudes ranging between $\sim$1-2 mmag) as dipole and quadrupole gravity-modes, as well as Rossby modes, as previously observed in Kepler $γ$ Dor stars. Our results …
We analyse the pulsating behaviour of TIC 308396022 observed by the TESS mission. The star is a high-amplitude $δ$ Sct star (HADS) that shows a very rich amplitude spectrum using the 3-yr light curve. Among these frequencies, the strongest peak of $f_{1}= 13.20362567(12) \rm{d^{-1}}$ is identified as the radial fundamental mode, and we also find the first and second overtones ($f_2$ and $f_3$). In the low frequency range (< 2.5 $\rm{d^{-1}}$), 22 peaks are identified to be gravity modes, which show a regular period spacing of about 2460\,s and have the angular degree $l = 1$. The period spacin…
Classification of over 50000 TESS stars in sectors 1-18 has resulted in the detection of 766 pulsating main sequence B stars as well as over 5000 $δ$ Scuti, 2300 $γ$ Doradus and 114 roAp candidates. It is found that a distinct group of $β$ Cephei stars, defined as B stars with frequencies greater than 2.5 d$^{-1}$ and predicted by models, does not exist. Instead, high frequencies are to be found over the whole B-star range, eventually merging with $δ$ Scuti stars. The cool B stars pulsating in high frequencies are the Maia variables. It is shown that Maia variables are not rapidly-rotating $β$…
The TESS mission has enabled discoveries of the brightest transiting planet systems around young stars. These systems are the benchmarks for testing theories of planetary evolution. We report the discovery of a mini-Neptune transiting a bright star in the AB Doradus moving group. HIP 94235 (TOI-4399, TIC 464646604) is a Vmag=8.31 G-dwarf hosting a 3.00 -0.28/+0.32 Rearth mini-Neptune in a 7.7 day period orbit. HIP 94235 is part of the AB Doradus moving group, one of the youngest and closest associations. Due to its youth, the host star exhibits significant photometric spot modulation, lithium …

Context: the theory of stellar evolution presents shortcomings when confronted with asteroseismic probes of interior physical properties. The differences between observations and theory are often great because stellar models have mainly been calibrated from observables connected to the surface of stars. Period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes are a particularly powerful asteroseismic tool that are useful for probing the near-core rotation and mixing of chemical elements in main-sequence stars with convective cores. Aims: we aim to compose a catalog of intermediate-mass stars in the TES…
The 30 Doradus (30 Dor) nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the brightest HII region in the Local Group and a prototype starburst similar to those found in high redshift galaxies. It is thus a stepping stone to understand the complex formation processes of stars in starburst regions across the Universe. Here, we have studied the formation history of massive stars in 30 Dor using masses and ages derived for 452 mainly OB stars from the spectroscopic VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS). We find that stars of all ages and masses are scattered throughout 30 Dor. This is remarkable because…

It has long been suspected that tidal forces in close binary stars could modify the orientation of the pulsation axis of the constituent stars. Such stars have been searched for, but until now never detected. Here we report the discovery of tidally trapped pulsations in the ellipsoidal variable HD 74423 in TESS space photometry data. The system contains a Delta Scuti pulsator in a 1.6-d orbit, whose pulsation mode amplitude is strongly modulated at the orbital frequency, which can be explained if the pulsations have a much larger amplitude in one hemisphere of the star. We interpret this as an…
We report detection of quasi-periodic (1.5 day) dimming of HD 240779, the solar-mass primary in a 5" visual binary (also TIC 284730577), by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. This dimming, as has been shown for other "dipper" stars, is likely due to occultation by circumstellar dust. The barycentric space motion, lithium abundance, rotation, and chromospheric emission of the stars in this system point to an age of ~125 Myr, and possible membership in the AB Doradus moving group. As such it occupies an important but poorly explored intermediate regime of stars with transient dimming bet…
Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique targets for measuring precise stellar properties and constrain stellar evolution models. In particular, it is possible to measure at the percent level masses and radii of both components of a double-lined spectroscopic EB. Since the advent of high-precision photometric space missions (MOST, CoRoT, Kepler, BRITE, TESS), the use of stellar pulsation properties to infer stellar interiors and dynamics constitutes a revolution for low-mass star studies. The Kepler mission has led to the discovery of thousands of classical pulsators such as $δ$ Scuti and solar-lik…

PG 1159-035 is the prototype of the DOV hot pre-white dwarf pulsators. It was observed during the Kepler satellite K2 mission for 69 days in 59 s cadence mode and by the TESS satellite for 25 days in 20 s cadence mode. We present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of those data. We identify a total of 107 frequencies representing 32 l=1 modes, 27 frequencies representing 12 l=2 modes, and 8 combination frequencies. The combination frequencies and the modes with very high k values represent new detections. The multiplet structure reveals an average splitting of 4.0+/-0.4 muHz for l=1 and 6.8+/-0…
HD\,37776 (V901\,Ori, B2\,Vp), also known as Landstreet's Star, is possibly the most remarkable magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) star known. Zeeman Doppler Imaging revealed this young, rapidly rotating star's surface magnetic field to be not only the strongest ($\sim 30$ kG) of the He-strong class of hot mCP stars but also by far the most topologically complex. In contrast to the overwhelming majority of mCP stars, which are well described by tilted dipoles, Landstreet's Star's non-axisymmetric surface magnetic field is entirely dominated by high-order spherical harmonics. It is one of the h…
Since the discovery of the spectral peculiarities of their prototype alpha2 Canum Venaticorum in 1897, the so-called ACV variables, which are comprised of several groups of chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence, have been the target of numerous photometric and spectroscopic studies. Especially for the brighter ACV variables, continuous observations over about a century are available, which are important to study long-term effects such as period changes or magnetic cycles in these objects. The present work presents an analysis of 165 Ap/CP2 and He-weak/CP4 stars using light curve…
