The edge flipping is a non-reversible Markov chain on a given connected graph, which is defined by Chung and Graham in [CG12]. In the same paper, its eigenvalues and stationary distributions for some classes of graphs are identified. We further study its spectral properties to show a lower bound for the rate of convergence in the case of regular graphs. Moreover, we show that a cutoff occurs at \frac{1}{4} n \log n for the edge flipping on the complete graph by a coupling argument.

The switch chain is a well-known Markov chain for sampling directed graphs with a given degree sequence. While not ergodic in general, we show that it is ergodic for regular degree sequences. We then prove that the switch chain is rapidly mixing for regular directed graphs of degree d, where d is any positive integer-valued function of the number of vertices. We bound the mixing time by bounding the eigenvalues of the chain. A new result is presented and applied to bound the smallest (most negative) eigenvalue. This result is a modification of a lemma by Diaconis and Stroock, and by using it w…
Consider the following method of card shuffling. Start with a deck of $N$ cards numbered 1 through N. Fix a parameter $p$ between 0 and 1. In this model a ``shuffle'' consists of uniformly selecting a pair of adjacent cards and then flipping a coin that is heads with probability p. If the coin comes up heads then we arrange the two cards so that the lower numbered card comes before the higher numbered card. If the coin comes up tails then we arrange the cards with the higher numbered card first. In this paper we prove that for all p not equal to 1/2, the mixing time of this card shuffling is O…
We prove that the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for random k-colorings of the complete tree with branching factor b undergoes a phase transition at $k=b(1+o_b(1))/\ln{b}$. Our main result shows nearly sharp bounds on the mixing time of the dynamics on the complete tree with n vertices for $k=Cb/\ln{b}$ colors with constant C. For $C\geq1$ we prove the mixing time is $O(n^{1+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$. On the other side, for $C<1$ the mixing time experiences a slowing down; in particular, we prove it is $O(n^{1/C+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$ and $Ω(n^{1/C-o_b(1)})$. The critical point C=1 is interesting since it…
Many regular graphs admit a natural partition of their edge set into cliques of the same order such that each vertex is contained in the same number of cliques. In this paper, we study the mixing rate of certain random walks on such graphs and we generalize previous results of Alon, Benjamini, Lubetzky and Sodin regarding the mixing rates of non-backtracking random walks on regular graphs.
The cutoff phenomenon describes a sharp transition in the convergence of a family of ergodic finite Markov chains to equilibrium. Many natural families of chains are believed to exhibit cutoff, and yet establishing this fact is often extremely challenging. An important such family of chains is the random walk on $\G(n,d)$, a random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. It is well known that almost every such graph for $d\geq 3$ is an expander, and even essentially Ramanujan, implying a mixing-time of $O(\log n)$. According to a conjecture of Peres, the simple random walk on $\G(n,d)$ for such $d$…
We prove a cutoff for the random walk on random $n$-lifts of finite weighted graphs, even when the random walk on the base graph $\mathcal{G}$ of the lift is not reversible. The mixing time is w.h.p. $t_{mix}=h^{-1}\log n$, where $h$ is a constant associated to $\mathcal{G}$, namely the entropy of its universal cover. Moreover, this mixing time is the smallest possible among all $n$-lifts of $\mathcal{G}$. In the particular case where the base graph is a vertex with $d/2$ loops, $d$ even, we obtain a cutoff for a $d$-regular random graph (as did Lubetzky and Sly in \cite{cutoffregular} with a …
We derive mixing properties for a broad class of Poisson count time series satisfying a certain contraction condition. Using specific coupling techniques, we prove absolute regularity at a geometric rate not only for stationary Poisson-GARCH processes but also for models with an explosive trend. We provide easily verifiable sufficient conditions for absolute regularity for a variety of models including classical (log-)linear models. Finally, we illustrate the practical use of our results for hypothesis testing.
It is natural to expect that nonbacktracking random walk will mix faster than simple random walks, but so far this has only been proved in regular graphs. To analyze typical irregular graphs, let $G$ be a random graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree 3 and a degree distribution that has exponential tails. We determine the precise worst-case mixing time for simple random walk on $G$, and show that, with high probability, it exhibits cutoff at time $\mathbf{h}^{-1} \log n$, where $\mathbf{h}$ is the asymptotic entropy for simple random walk on a Galton--Watson tree that approximates $G$ local…
This paper deals with the construction of a correlation decay tree (hypertree) for interacting systems modeled using graphs (hypergraphs) that can be used to compute the marginal probability of any vertex of interest. Local message passing equations have been used for some time to approximate the marginal probabilities in graphs but it is known that these equations are incorrect for graphs with loops. In this paper we construct, for any finite graph and a fixed vertex, a finite tree with appropriately defined boundary conditions so that the marginal probability on the tree at the vertex matche…
Various mixing properties of $β$-, $β'$- and Gaussian Delaunay tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ are studied. It is shown that these tessellation models are absolutely regular, or $β$-mixing. In the $β$- and the Gaussian case exponential bounds for the absolute regularity coefficients are found. In the $β'$-case these coefficients show a polynomial decay only. In the background are new and strong concentration bounds on the radius of stabilization of the underlying construction. Using a general device for absolutely regular stationary random tessellations, central limit theorems for a number…
A class of examples is constructed to show that for strictly stationary Markov chains that are reversible, the simultaneous mixing rates for the $ρ$-mixing and strong mixing ($α$-mixing) conditions can be fairly arbitrary, within certain unavoidable tight restrictions. The examples constructed here have the added property that the mixing rate for the absolute regularity ($β$-mixing) condition is within a constant factor of that for strong mixing.

We establish rapid mixing of the random-cluster Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs for all $q\ge 1$ and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, where the threshold $p_u(q,Δ)$ corresponds to a uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition for the random-cluster model on the (infinite) $Δ$-regular tree. It is expected that this threshold is sharp, and for $q>2$ the Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs undergoes an exponential slowdown at $p_u(q,Δ)$. More precisely, we show that for every $q\ge 1$, $Δ\ge 3$, and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, with probability $1-o(1)$ over the choice of a random $Δ$-regular graph on $n$ v…

It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
We study the performance of Markov chains for the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on random regular graphs. It is conjectured that their performance is dictated by metastability phenomena, i.e., the presence of "phases" (clusters) in the sample space where Markov chains with local update rules, such as the Glauber dynamics, are bound to take exponential time to escape. The phases that are believed to drive these metastability phenomena in the case of the Potts model emerge as local, rather than global, maxima of the so-called Bethe functional, and previous approaches of analysing these pha…
